Learn how to change the air filter on a Honda Goldwing GL1800. On many motorcycles, changing the air filter is a fairly easy job. Because of the shelter assembly built up on this motorcycle, changing the air filter on a Honda Goldwing is more difficult. John will show you how to dig down to the air filter and replace it, and the process starts by removing the seat. Then, John will guide you through the process of disconnecting the side panels, instruments, and the rest of the shelter assembly to reach the ECU. After the ECU is moved, you can access the air filter. From there, the process is familiar, you’ll just remove the old air filter, replace it with a new one, and then close the air box.
Then you’ll reverse the process to get the Goldwing back together again. Below is a link to a useful diagram that will show you how all the parts fit together:

That's the most involved air filter change I've ever witnessed..holy smokes!!😳
Thinking the same thing
Filter looked good to me. I used a scope to go in from the right side glove box of my Goldwing, worked perfectly to see how bad it was, sure saved a TON of work!
Great respect to the lovely people who have kept the faith with 2007 Gold Wings, but this level of demolition in order to replace a service item is madness!
Evidently Honda didn't think it was hard enough. I had an '02 and taking the top shelter off (like this video) was EASY. Try doing a 2012+ sometime. 3 hours in and I STILL can't find the mystery fasteners holding it on yet. Arragh!!!
John, I watched your video and decided to save myself a few dollars and change my own filter, wow was that a challenge but your detailed video on how to do this was "on point" you did an amazing job showing how this was to be done and I did it!! (with me watching you video over and over, lol) Just wanted to sat THANK YOU for producing such a great video I'm sure you have saved may people quite a bit of money by this. AWESOME!!!
Thanks, Ken! Your kind words are appreciated!
Easy as pie only looks difficult because of all the wiring of the electronics. I think most people that try this will be surprised how easy it is. It’s only a couple bolts and if you think you’d have a hard time figuring out which plug goes where when putting it together just get a pack of multicolored tape rolls and tape same color to each end of the plugs and it’s easy to match them up after.
You’re a good man for making a video to help people out on this project. That’s the only thing I hate about the Goldwing things like that are hard to work on. I appreciate you buddy.
I just ordered the air filter from Partzilla yesterday and today decided to see if there were any videos of how to replace the old one. Very helpful thanks.
Looks like an absolute nightmare, but it needs to be done. There are just way too many opportunities to break something for what should be a much simpler replacement method. I may be tackling this during the upcoming weekend when we are expected to have 40-degree temps. That's a good time for motorcycle maintenance!
Thanks for the great demonstration of the process. I'm not looking forward to it, but it is what it is.
You are truly a good teacher. Change my air filter this morning on a 2001 Goldwing that I bought from a guy who stored it in a barn, Found a nice mouse nest with some mouse poison and a dead mouse. Fortunately the mouse did not eat his way through the element. Project wasn't to tough after watching your video a few times. Ordered the filter at Partzilla and best price in town. Thank you sir.
Mr. Talley,
Thank you again for allowing me to save money.
You saved me with your instructions on my fork seal replacement.
Now the filter change to save money again. It was not hard but the finesse getting it back together made it take a good amount of time longer than a pro.
All eventually came together with a couple of screws to the “abyss”
I ordered some replacements.
Thank you!
I have done this a few years ago. Complex job. Thank you for a great video. Most postings stop at " now you put it back in reverse order" Partzilla is my Gl 1800 parts store
one of the best out there, and shorter vids, good quick video edits, and he puts it all back for us! geez
One of the better air filter change videos I and seen. I've changed my 06 many times (240k-and-counting miles). Thanks for sharing. The fact that y'all invest in making videos will make you my new go-to for parts. I am getting a list together of 20-30 little fasteners and oe do-dads taht need replacing plus this winter I am replacing all the front brake bolts.
Thats one of the reasons I buy from partzilla.
Great video! Just finished dropping the new filter and the cover back in place last night, will reassemble today. Would like to note that on my non-ABS 2009, I did not need to flip stuff over to the right to access the air cleaner cover. Wiring, ECU box & cruise assembly all pulled up far enough to easily remove the cover and filter to the left. Not a bad job really, but holy crap there is a lot of wiring on a GL.....
Installing Heli bars is harder than this just takes time n patience n organization skills no big deal great video👍
Another great video! I've changed dozens of these and I still think Honda built the bike around the air filter! My current 'Wing is a '13 Airbag model so I have that to contend with that too. Main thing is don't hurry and be patient. Don't jerk and snatch. I really liked the clutch replacement video you did on that bike. Thanks.
Thanks for the video! I suggest that you start the engine before putting up the shelter and seat, to make sure that all wiring are connected.
you do a great job in your video. Easy to follow, and pleasant to listen to. Thanks for bringing confidence to doing this job DYI. Who would think you needed that level of disassembly for an air filter!!
Just wanted to say thanks for the help, I have a 2003 Goldwing so a few tings were different but couldn’t have done it without the video.
I am flabbergasted. This honestly makes changing an engine look simple..I was a Honda motorcycle mechanic in the 70s. I could literally have the engine out of a CB 350 twin out of the frame and have the camshaft, (which were junk), out of the engine in under 50 minutes.. changing this air filter has more steps. And in addition to there being more steps, this job is scary because there are a lot of hidden plastic tabs..
This is an excellent instructional video. I just bought my very first 1800 gold when used, and whenever I buy a used motorcycle, I change everything from brake fluid to spark plugs.. motorcycles don’t wear out, they get neglected to death.
The Gold Wing I just bought is a 2002 with only 13,000 miles on it. The date today is 10-2019. The original owner said he never had the air cleaner changed. I wonder how many mice I will find in there
I would like to hear suggestions from Gold Wing honors, whether I should use the standard Honda air filter element, a HIFLO aftermarket air filter element, or go for the big bucks washable K &N Standard filter replacement. I have a Honda pacific coast that I have used for commuting for 24 years. I put a washable K &N Air filter in my PC 24 years ago, and I am happy with it still. The PC air filter element style appears to be identical to the one in this Gold Wing..
Any Gold Wing riders have any experience with different air filters in there 1800 wings?
Well done John and Partzilla, thx for giving us GW’s a roadmap! Have used some other of your other vid’s , appreciate those roadmaps too!
Awesome! Thanks for watching.
Amazing attitude and ways to explain. Best video out there, Thank You!
Very detailed video with great picture - thanks for making it!
Have this task coming up soon on my 2007 goldwing. Such a great video, can do the job in confidence after watching this. Keep up the great work 👍
I have the '07 to getting ready to do mine next week. Only 14k miles but what the hell😅
This motorcycle started life as just and air filter, and everything else was built around it.
Thank you so much for making these videos. The diagrams are perfect.
You my friend are a BadMan!.you made that look easy.you are the goldwing guru.
Thanks for this video. Really well done.
That is beyond ridiculous and I thought my Tiger 660 was bad. I was actually considering a Gold Wing and this has put me right off.
Just finished changing my filter for the first time since owning my 02 wing. I have been putting it off since all I’ve read was how horrible of a job it was. It took me about 4 hours but more than half that time was spent shooting the crap with my neighbor. Pretty easy if you keep up with where the bolts go.
Good video. Followed you and it...was still a pain. Fortunately this is my last Goldwing. 2 so far, so I've done my time. Move on to easier bike to work on.
One of the better install I've seen
Thank you very much for the detailed instructions how to replace the air filter. This is the best video I have found on the CZcams. This video convinced me to do it myself instead of taking it to a bike shop. I can imagine how many screws would be missing and parts not sitting in their place.
I just wonder, why Honda had to place it so deep in the bike?! Doesn't make any sense. Prior to my 2008 GL-1800 I had a 2003 Voyager XII. I could replace the filter in 10 minutes.
Every time this video comes up in a meeting, we talk about how far into the bike you have to dig to get it. It's a thing, man.
Great work and what a lovely color on that wing!
Burgundy?
Waw. U r a hero. I own honda shadow, 6 bolta and done. I started to hate gold wing
Thanks! This was a great help to me.
Detailed information, great job, Thanks a lot
Awesome explanation and video, thanks !
Insane that Honda would make something so inexpensive and vital so difficult to perform. Sure, it forces people to take it to Honda to have it done but 4 hours for an air filter change and the freaking $300 reflects negatively on Honda in the long run. And ultimately , we as consumers don't rely on Honda, but Honda does rely on us. After two gold wings I went to Yamaha. Love the switch.
My Harley takes One bolt to change the air filter. I really like the Goldwing but this convinced me to keep my Harley.
Hi John, thanks for taking the time to make this video I have found it very useful as I am just about going to undertake the task changing my air filter, I have a 2014 airbag model, Is the procedure the same for removing & replacing (as you refer to it) ‘the shelf’
Can the air-bag just be unplugged and plugged back in?
Great instructions. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video! With your help, it really wasn’t that terrible.
Considering that it's an opposed 6 it makes sense that the air filter is deep inside the beast. The rest of the maintenance on a GW18 is on par with with other motorcycles, or maybe even easier.
Holy crap, that's a lot of work for an air filter. I"m shopping and looking at a 01. Not sure after this video. Great video indeed.
Great vidio the bike is incredibly clean the paint is immaculate!! How about a vidio on how the owner keeps so clean!!
Great video
It's not a difficult job, just an involved one. Hardest part is keeping track of which fasteners go where. Make up some cardboard cutouts and push the plugs into the cardboard in the same fashion as the original. Other than that, once you have done it once, it's easy to do again. Be sure to put the templates away for the next time. Second time around is very easy but no less involved, but still a couple of hours work. But don't neglect it; your beautiful Wing deserves better.
And when you feel you need to curse the job, curse the design engineers who must have been drunk the day they did their job....
Excellent video
Great video!
Gracias por compartir su video 🙏 Ferruzkin le envía saludos desde Guadalajara Jalisco México.genial bonita forma de explicar...!!!
Five and half hours later the new K&N air filter is in my 2015 Goldwing ....
Thanks for your assistance ....
Great video! Thanks
That was a great 👍 help. Thanks🤩👏!!!
Very helpful
On reassembly the hardest thing is getting all the wire bundles in EXACTLY the right position. Otherwise the top shelter will not fit.
*You took so much off, i forgot what we were looking for :P*
If you dig just a little deeper past the air filter, you make it all the way to China.
We still talk about this job all the time. It was a thing.
I love my goldwing but this is ridiculous. Bright side of things this would be the perfect time to add any accessories....like any and all that you can think of. This job gives me anxiety 😳
Watch the video a few times, you wont be less anxious, but you will have confidence :-) as there is no real talent needed to do this job, just patience. Just did it myself this morning.
@@lblerg I changed it out not long after I watched this. Wasn’t difficult just a lot of tasks to preform….happy I won’t need to do it for awhile now.
Weather is beautiful today, time to ride.👍
Wow im sad they never did a Dyno test on that bike before and after Air Filter change!! John did one such test some time ago on a CBR and it was amazing 5hp difference!! On a Goldwing it might be 10hp!
Thanks for the video! I watched it about 4 times over a few weeks, really saw its only following instructions, .. Still, very anxious to do this i began this morning after a cup of coffee and i'm now completed, 945am. I am NOT very good at working on cars/bikes and I did it. Just take one thing at a time. Nothing about this is really more complicated than unplugging a cable or unscrewing a bolt. Now i'm much more familiar with how the top of the bike goes together, there is no magic or fiddling, very straight forward.
Not sure how a shop who's done this before can charge over 1hr of labor, next time i do it will probably be 45 minutes or less.
Need to add, there was a gasket around the filter when i removed it, (not shown in video) i put the gasket in the air cover and then slid the filter on the cover and put them all on together. May be a bit easier. I put a little air tool oil on the gasket to keep it from dissolving/cracking.
thanks, Ill try that tip.
Removing and reconnecting the lower vent control cable can be a pain in the butt. I saw a jump cut in the video. 14:46 . I have found its much better to remove the whole lever assembly with the cable still connected. Pull off the lever's knob and click off the cover plate that says open and close. Under that there is only one screw to remove. Removing it as an assembly doesn't put a nasty kink in the cable.
Don't be afraid to use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush on the filter housing followed by the nozzle all around, before opening, and then on the filter, before you remove it. This will minimize debris. Obviously if debris does fall into the airbox you want to vac that out, including the intake ports at the bottom. No harm in wiping up the oil from the PCV with a paper towel either.
Great video, I need to do a starter change on my 2004, how close does this put me to the starter? Do you have a video on changing the starter? Thanks
Your hired!!! How long does it take to do this job?
super video
I know that was just to try to get people to buy your parts but I kinda feel like I'd rather pay someone to connect up those 20 or so connectors and get all those plastic pieces back together without breaking anything. Holy crap! You've got patience.
Goldwings are a special machine. Sometimes it's not even about saving money, it's just that people like projects. Some projects are a little more time consuming than others.
I called a dealer by my house and they were going to charge $300 to do this.
Very good video...TGBTG Thank you.
You were Superman and The Flash at 2x playback speed.. whopped that job 👍😎✊
Very easy :D
You could not have done better job/I did mine today the guy before me replaced all the Allen head bolts wrong with ones from hardware store ,I will sort it out later thanks for helping me through 1st time I can do it again in 1/2 the time .....M
I wonder how many Goldwings out there with the origin air cleaner in them?
Hi! In Europe version (Spain), center console have 2 rivets and 2 screws under tweeter fairings.
(En Europa, la versión española, en la consola central, trae 2 remaches de plástico y 2 tornillos debajo de las cubiertas de los tweeter.
So simple
Thanks for the video. It has convinced me to never buy a Goldwing! Seriously, though. Such a simple service item should not be so hard to replace. What was Honda thinking? Definitely a cash cow for the dealerships!
Thank you.
You're welcome!
my st1300 is about 8 screws to change the filter so i guess my plan of changing to a goldwing has just gone out the window
Good job thanks
Please can send for airbag models
Great video, thank you. Question: Is the process the same for a 2003 year model?
Yes, the process should be the same.
I have done this once and I'm about to do it again, what fun. really bad design for servicing...
You don't change it that often though
@@user-hs2hd7wp9g That does not change the fact this it's a PITA
Great video it will help ... what do you think about the after market air filter? Like I think hiflo something like that . Cost about $22.00 !!!!
A lot of the aftermarket filters provide a little more airflow or a reusable, non disposable version.
Anyone have any suggestions about removing the headlight adjust connection? I can press the top tab and move it back maybe 16th of an inch but can’t tell if there’s another part holding it together?? The opposite side doesn’t seem to be moving but can’t tell if there is something holding it together. Never mind. I had the little clip that holds the cable to the radiator on an ‘08 still on the connector, removed that and it separated easily. Thanks
May I ask are you able to do a New goldwing demonstration air filter replacement.??
I have a 2008 GL1800. What difference would it be to change the air filter on my bike that has the airbag? Thanks.
I am having trouble finding a how-to with the airbag model. A little worried about starting mine with the airbag, 2014 for me Canadian model in case it makes a difference. Obvious risk with airbag model and accidentally causing it to deploy.
Looking at this video, I think the air filter on my 2006 wing will be done at a garage by a professional.
Reason 1, not enough space in my garage.
Reason 2, lack of patience to do this.
Reason 3, I'll end up messing it up.
Happily change the engine oil & filter and the shaft drive, but that's where my mechanical know how ends.
Brilliant video though.
Yeah, the Goldwing is tough. Every job we do, if it's hard, we say "At least it's not the Goldwing."
I feel the same with my 2002.. woah😢
Oh my. I knew these were not easy & I just bought a '17. This is Unhonda like engineering.
The air filters on the 2018's are worse!
Hi John,
I am just about to under take an air filter change with the help of your video. My bike is a 2014 airbag model, Will removing the fairing be the same procedure & I can just unplug the airbag & it comes away with the fairing?…….. Mark 12:13
So Upset!! I got halfway through this job even removed the fuel tank and it was nothing like the video, come to find out I dont have a Goldwing 😢
This was easy, try changing the throttle cables
I need to know what to look for my radio on my 2007 Goldwing lost its power no fuse is blown can you give me a idea on what to check It's a 1800
Is this procedure the same as on a 2002 1800?
Most intimidating thing I every saw. Less part on the international space shuttle.
It's not that bad Mark.. and if your into keeping your bike semi tidy, it's really good to get deep in there just to clean things up 'cause that darn dirt really accumulates in the hidden spaces. One season I had a nest of mouses take over the intake manifolds area while hiding tons of dog kibble on top of the air filter through the intake ducts.
@@steven.h0629 Some people put screens over the air inlet ducts to keep the mice out.
After watching this, I am going to drop it off at the Dealer, walk accross the street and have a beer.
Just got my 06, and I just changed the filter. Now, the abs light is on, and there is no sound on the radio. What a headache! I've got to take it apart again.
Went to reassemble and I have a large female connecter near the right pocket (near radiator cap) I can’t find where the mating half is. I suspect it might have been empty all along, but I’m not sure. Anyone know what it is?
You don't have yo unplug the ecm and the cruise control . There are only two connections you need to unplug and you can move the whole assembly to the side
How about for airbags model?
Holy BatCrap. I always work on my own stuff, have lift, three rollways, special tools, etc. Own BMW, Hayabusa, and Harley now. I WAS considering getting a nice low mileage wing for some road trips, but after watching this I wouldn't even consider owning one! A major deconstruction just to change a friggin air filter??? I thought the oil change on the Hayabusa was a pain in the rear! There' no doubt in my mind that people run those air filters forever, and that dealers probably just charge for changing them instead of risking introducing electrical glitches from mechanics slip ups! Nope, I don't care how good the Goldwing is on the hwy, not getting one of those!
Maybe I'll just buy one for a long trip and then sell it before I put a wrench or screwdriver near it!
How about a video on the 2010 air bag model please?
It's really the same except the radio module is in the left side and the airbag sets on top of everything under the shelter, the computer module is upright on the left under the airbag. Air bag is actually easy to remove, just pay attention to the way the straps fold and lay down under the shelter.
Tape the foot warmer doors shut before removing the cables and it's easier. Also the connection that gets forgotten the most is the small wire connecting to the top of the airbox. If you have a mouse nest in the airbox, cut the screens off the old filter and use them over the ends of the air snorkels going to the airbox to make it harder to get in.
And I wonder what a dealership charges to do this.
