Prison for Life for the engineer that developed the placement of the air filter, this was the best filter change video out there, you save us diy guys a lot of money
Customers want every gizmo they can get, managers want to meet budget and time constraints, engineering gets the blame for trying to satisfy both. It is what it is, at some point I figured out that getting the blame was just part of my job, but prison seems a wee bit harsh.
Some Honda Engineers started with the Airbox and then built the Goldwing around it... after it was done they said "Oh well we can't change that anymore and frankly the dealer can make some money to install it for the customers."
Thank you Chris !!! This is probably the best GL1800 filter replacement tudor online . Subscribed to your channel , keep up the good work on educating us regular folks . It's much appreciated !!!
Chris thanks so much for this video. I was able to change my air filter using this video. It’s a level 10 project but it can be done. I have the confidence now to do it again some day hopefully years from now! The hardest part is some of the connectors especially the one just under the NAVI screen. I put in the same K&N high flow filter. My air box was full of field peas and what looked like maybe the cooked remains of a mouse. The previous owner obviously had this bike on a farm. So there’s my story. 🤪
Man make a rider want get his hands dirty. The applause at the end. Fella needs a. Steak dinner for that attempt. Thank you thank you May God continue to use you.
Chris..You are the Man! Thanks so much for this vid. Before I watched it, I was scheduling my first routine service at a local bike shop. When I mentioned that I owned a 2014 F6B and needed the air filter (along with an oil change, brake and clutch fluid, and spark plugs changed), he returned an estimate of approx $1025.00. Immediately, I remembered the words of an old wise sage.."Why pay another man for what you can do on your own." With your help, I replaced the OEM filter with a K&N and changed the oil. (I'll check your vid on how to change the spark plugs). ONE NOTE - make sure you secure the nut springs that secure the left and right-side body panels. Two loose nut springs slipped off and fell down into the lower "belly of the beast." I was fortunate to fish one out with a small magnet. I'll replace the other one when it comes in from special order (Nut spring - 5mm Part# 90320-GE2-760). The next time your in the nation's capitol/Maryland area, let me know. I owe you dinner. thanks again
Thanks for this video. Something tells me if I try this, I'm going to break a tab, a wire, or something. I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but stuff happens. Thanks for the tutorial. That was great!
Well hello again Chris this is Emmett.. that was a great demonstration my friend but from all that work you had to do I think I will just let the dealer do that when I change out the filter when it's time to change out the filter but I will certainly buy that filter that can be washed and reused that's a great idea. I truly do want to save this my good friend they did not make this Goldwing mechanically friendly just watching all the changes you had to go through just to get to the air filter.. was just crazy... and I am truly going to let Honda manufacturers know this.. Oh and PS my friend you should let us know the tools that you are using such as the one you used to pull out cans with you should let us know the tools that you are using if they are magnetic tip or what have you we would like to know that that's very important.. but that Applause at the end of your demonstration was truly truly needed by friend for all of that work you had to go through just to get to the air filter I just had to laugh,,👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

@@Matowix it's generall cost in the neighborhood of $500.00 to have your stock Goldwing air filter changed at the dealership, if you have accessories on your bike it will cost even more the extra labor time.
Yep. I did on my f6b.. because dealer wanted $640. Part and labor.. lol 5 hours job for me and I expend $60 in a K&N and couple bucks in a 6 pack.. lol
I bought an 08 Wing with 26k miles, 3 weeks ago. I changed my filter myself a few days ago because I refuse to be held hostage to a dealers extortion. I also refuse to be intimidated by a maintenance item. I bought Cruisemans excellent video series which I followed. With just this one task, the purchase price of the video series paid for itself. It did take me over 2 hours, but it looks harder than it really is. Just need to take your time and be methodical. Having half a brain helps too. All the fluids and plugs will be changed this weekend. Brakes too if needed but they look ok from what I can see right now
Thanks for giving me the inspiration to do my 2003! Would you know or anyone the possible cause of a little oil by the left intake 🤔.... she still runs great
Ok awesonme job , However i used KN Permenant filter on my kawasaki and you had to put an oil on both sides before installing it. KN sells the products (2bottles) one to clean and one to put on the filter before installing it. I am curious why is that not done here. cuz that product is essential to catch any fine dust and prevent it ot from going to the pistons and improve the performance. thank you for a great video
What MPG should I expect from a 2002 GL1800? Right now, I am averaging 30 MPG and seems a little low to me. I have only had it a week or so. Love the bike but might move to something else if I can't get it closer to 40 MPG. I have been riding it very easy and getting to OD as soon as possible 40 MPH or so.
AutoProShine.com Call Bill Hinds directly to order. His number is on the website. Check out my banner and you’ll get another glimpse as to how stellar that product is. Best I have ever used.
I asked one of the commenters below if the airbag module removal needs to be done and how to do it safely. They can be dangerous. Suggestions on a 14 airbag model?
Do you keep any spare clips and bolts? Do you lube any of the tabs, clips, or connectors going back together? Where did you get the tab tool you used on some of the push clips? Thank you for encouraging us to be brave.
No spare clips or bolts, I put them all back in reverse order as I removed them. I purchased the tab tool many years ago from a parts store, but they sell them on ebay.
I use K&N filters but was pointed to CZcams to review the many motorcycle and car reviews on whether K&N or the OEM filer provides better intake protection. All tests seem to suggest the OEM filter provides better protection and filters out more harmful particles. I am interested if these tests of benefit to simply staying with the OEM filter. One video by a Motorcycle mechanic showed long tear wear on outer piston and ring surfaces were significantly worse with long term K&N. Other video testing the car version showed particle pass through under pressures was measured in the thousand versus hundreds in Wix and Puralator filters. Just asking for anyone’s alternative thoughts or conclusions.
Are/Were you a Honda tech?
No, Honda will not recognize me.

Dealerships know that it's more profitable to service a bike, that's why they want you to bring it back to them for routine repairs and service.

Love the bike but might move to something else if I can't get it closer to 40 MPG. I have been riding it very easy and getting to OD as soon as possible 40 MPH or so.
great job chris even years later! hey boss, what u use to get that shine out like that on the body, candy red has nvr looked better?
AutoProShine.com Call Bill Hinds directly to order. His number is on the website. Check out my banner and you’ll get another glimpse as to how stellar that product is. Best I have ever used.
I just changed mine on my 2014 Airbag. Just take your pain and multiple it by 1.5 and that is the pain I experienced.
I have a 14 with the airbag as well. How did the airbag module come out? Or if it has to. Any risk with removal?
How about if you have an Airbag just like mine. Is it the same process or I have to go an extra mile for that? Thanks.
I asked one of the commenters below if the airbag module removal needs to be done and how to do it safely. They can be dangerous. Suggestions on a 14 airbag model?
Thanks Chris
Your welcome.
OMG. Loved the canned cheers. Could not stop laughing. I read a Honda dealer charges 3 hours. At $145 an hour, freaking outrageous.
Have u had to take the bottom of air box off to change the pulse generator,if so how did u get the vent plugs back on the air box ?
How many miles was on your wing when you changed that air filter?
Do you keep any spare clips and bolts?
Do you lube any of the tabs, clips, or connectors going back together?
Where did you get the tab tool you used on some of the push clips?
Thank you for encouraging us to be brave.
No spare clips or bolts, I put them all back in reverse order as I removed them. I purchased the tab tool many years ago from a parts store, but they sell them on ebay.
In here late, but thank you for the detailed information. You just convinced me not to buy a Goldwing.
Shoot! That's CRAZY!
