Boston, due to heavy immigration from Catholic countries (including Vietnam), was throughout the 20th century the most Catholic city in America. Catholicism places a lot more emphasis on larger family groups than Protestants, and therefore they stereotype Protestants as too individualistic and less concerned with the importance of family. Also, Catholicism puts a lot more ephasis on religious figures and religious holidays, while the Proestants believe that faith in god alone is the only thing of importance.
Well the mom being a Protestant-bashing Catholic is such a Vietnamese thing to do. Well the parents are no doubt refugees that fled the country in and after 1975 at the conclusion of the war. I like that her family isn’t all the same (to a degree), the writers could’ve just been like “fuck it they’re all the same shitty person” but at least one of them is at least somewhat nice to Diane
Well family being Vietnamese has a lot to do with the way they live now. Diane’s parents are most likely refugees that fled Saigon in 75 or later. The thing about these people is that they always long for the past, about the time before the war’s final outcome and what could have been. That is why you see one brother’s obsession with a baseball game where their team loses, and it seem to be a family tradition as well since everyone was okay with him hogging the TV just for that and even watches with him. To these refugees, their team did lose in 75, they had to live the consequences of that defeat and they never got over it. Another aspect of this family is how they have embraced the American life fully and the father in a Diane’s flashback refused to discuss Vietnam with her. That is usually one way to for these refugees to deal with the trauma of their flight. They resent Vietnam and what it has become, in their eyes, communist hell. I often read report of Vietnamese nationals traveling to America and get harassed by the Vietnamese refugees of 75. That is certainly a minority and the extremity, because I have meet many people that had to run and they just had a very loving longing for their former home. Some even told me I am lucky to not have such conflicted feelings about my home country, and I still have a home back in Vietnam. This was during my time studying in Australia. Diane’s father is also a professor in Vietnam study, no doubt he would have been very conflicted person, having to constantly be reminded of his past home and it’s controversial history. Finally, this also explains why later on in the series Diane’s trip to Vietnam didn’t turn out as good as she hoped, because her parents are probably from the South and in her distraught to get away from MPB, she landed in Hanoi, the north. The two regions are vastly different in culture, people and cuisine and the lingering bitterness of the war still exists somewhat to this day. Diane, already without any knowledge about her home, found herself in a place that was probably not even her “home”, is a perfect tragedy of the 75 refugees. Whenever a former Vietnamese 75 refugee wants to visit Vietnam they always choose to stay in Saigon because that was their home whereas Hanoi was the seat of power that upended their home. I read the show’s credit and they have quite a few Vietnamese working on it, and it shows perfectly in subtle details.

You’re reaching really hard to see good in people who left their father’s corpse in the living room
@@rowanphillips3497 Look I never said they were smart
@@pompousproductions were you abused/neglected as a child?
@@pompousproductionsI actually think it's way more likely that they fostered Gary when he was an older teen and he just never left because he was there so long. Foster parents don't need to jump through nearly as many hoops and they get a check from the state until the kid is an adult. That sounds way more in line for Diane's parents
I think its hilarious that i know plenty of families, including my own, that make this shit look like childs play.
Love the Boston accents!
yeesh diane is really the beauty of the family huh
Can't believe this was 6 years.
I just noticed poring one for the homie, fucking hilarious
They predicted the Celtics city edition jersey
Who's George Clooney? Do they mean Jurj Clooners?
Actual Asian-Americans from Southie to us: "AND WHAT'S IT TO YOU???"
Ma boi Marty though 😂
-"Yo DD get me a beer"
"We're American as pho!!!"
I have never related to a character before so badly
A trip to your childhood home can be a good reminder as to why you left to begin with.
I love how Diane brother is a black sheep
Wow I love this. What show is this?
Bojack horseman, it's on Netflix.
See this makes sense the problem in my house is that the genders are flipped all girls and very few boys so if we do anything on our own we are seen as abandoning the family and anytime we come home its oh look who blessed us with their presence
Can’t look up from the Netflix show.
Wait there is a George Clooney and a Jurj Clooners in the Bojack World?
Why does this remind me of my family?
Your family emotionally abuses you?
I'm so sorry
“Can’t look up from the game.”
pops is wicked departed
And then they're gonna go throw chum at Jeter.
This sounds a lot like a gta cut scene.
“In your face forever 😢”
Oh yeah pahps depahted so hahd
I want a "Ball Game" jersey so badly!!!!!!!!
"We're just a bunch of savages" . . . . . I mean yeah
There are a lot of Chinese people in Boston I feel like idk
1:07 Surely she means Jurj Clooners right?
What an awful family. Makes you think this is why Diane relates to BoJack a bit.
Omg my cousins r like that yet I'm Aussie
1:09 - I think she meant to say “jurj clooners”
I wish Tommy was a better character, he seemed like the only good one of the bunch, which still wasn't much..
Maybe, but he could just being manipulative. They needed help with the funeral, after all
@@saralazzari9231 yeah, it is a shame
I dont see diane family as being abusive I think they're annoying and maybe inconsiderate and selfish but I don't see abuse maybe there's something wrong with me I don't know But you can tell they love and miss her
I love that they don’t act like stereotypical Asian Americans and yet they’re total Boston stereotypes 😂
boston is exactly like this
As a death enthusiast I do admire how comfortable they were with having the body in their home
