    As far as battery life, it totally depends on what you're doing. When you are doing simple tasks its just sipping power because of the e-cores, but the display still uses the same. If you don't have the screen maxed out at 600 nits you can get up to 24 hours of battery life. For mixed use you will get about 6 additional hours of battery life. Going from 10-12 up to 16-18 hours.
    Keep in mind that if you are doing very heavy tasks battery life drops as the CPU/GPU needs more power and the fans have to spin like crazy, but based on the tests you can see how much less power is being used. CPU going from 68W peak to only 22W is a massive difference. Timed tasks will take longer but not by much as you saw. In that scenario, you will go for 3 hours of battery life up to about 6-7, so more than doubling the battery life.

    This is the huge benefit of the 3nm process. The ability to do more with less. The fear was always Apple would make the MBP thinner and smaller because of this but by keeping the size the same they really are able to do so much more with much less resources.
    While some are so fixated on speed and performance there are some that also prefer to have a laptop that can run the entire day and have virtually no noise or heat. That’s why the MBA is such an amazing laptop. Having this level of performance running a cool and quiet laptop for most of the day is pretty darn insane. This is the true power of Apple Silicon that a lot of reviews miss out on.
    There are a lot of professions out there that could probably just leave the M3 Max on low power mode. The performance was already typically way more than most need and now they can get an all day laptop as well.

    I have the 14" 14/30 M3 Max. I tested the Denoise function in Adobe Camera Raw which takes a lot of time on my 60 megapixel raw files. I can confirm low power mode is NOT worth it. In automatic mode it took 27 seconds. Low Power mode took 44 seconds. This is a real world test for my workflow and I will NOT be using low power mode. My laptop is silent under both conditions so noise is not an issue nor is heat. This is why I don't like synthetic tests as they mean nothing for real world situations. For those wondering high power mode got the same time of 27 seconds. I'm keeping my system in automatic.

    A lot of people use their macbooks closed at their desks in stands that keep them upright. They just plug in a monitor and dock to get a desktop like experience. Ive always wondered what the performance difference is in this config. Does the chip still get cooled enough? Is it better because the air gets fully out of the system instead of heating up the screen or does the closed screen trap heat in the keyboard? Are some docked positions better than others? Would like to see a video on it.

      @@thomast7748 Trust But Verify. Maybe it's fine for MacBook airs with no thermal side effects, maybe Apple did their testing with it flat on the desk but if you stand it vertically or horizontally, it gets enough air flow, maybe there's some downsides but also some upsides that make it a good option for some but not others. I'm just saying an analysis would make for an interesting video.

    It's hard to please everybody when it comes to battery life. But from these tests by Max Tech and other tests by other credible CZcamsrs, it seems likely that the M3 Max has solid battery life. I personally don't mind the fans spinning right away to cool the CPU as that should extend the life of the machine. But good additional cooling is something to consider if you are pushing your machine hard

    I’m sure it’d be madness on the fabrication side of things, but I really wish it were possible to pair the high-end CPU configuration with the low-end GPU configuration. Like the 16-core CPU with the ‘regular’ M3’s GPU to better manage power-use for those of us who don’t need the GPU power. Or at least let users disable like half of the GPU cores or something on the M3 Max.

      @@psysword I bought a 16-inch MacBook Pro w/ the 10+4-core M3 Max and 36GB RAM. It's a noticeable step up from my M1 Pro, which takes some of the sting out of spending so much money when I really just needed more RAM.
      I'm a SWE/SRE and for development we run our entire stack locally, containerized and/or virtualized, including several databases. It was painful to get everything up and running and still be productive in Chrome and VS Code. Unfortunately my role includes supporting a team of developers who all use Macs so switching to Linux or Windows wasn't an option.
      Now I have plenty of headroom and I'm no longer swapping to disk, and my C# builds absolutely fly on the new P-cores, so I think it was worth it. Fortunately I'm in a position where I can afford it (and it's tax deductible). I think it's absolutely ridiculous that Apple is still selling $1K+ laptops with 8GB RAM, and that you have to spend at least $2K to get a MacBook Pro with more than 18GB RAM.

    The fans on my Pro M2 Max are too low. So, I'm all for louder fans. I believe this is why my M2 Max is overheating and throttling under gaming load. Because of this, and having no desire to wait for apple support to fix the issue I bought a m3 max with basically maxed specs. I got 6 months or so out of my M2 Max LOL. Apple needs to improve things. But they still have me as a customer.

    The problem with Intel has never been just that they run hot at peak performance. It's that even the toned down chips use lots of power for even basic tasks. It wouldn't be so much of a problem that Intel is shipping CPUs that draw over 150W at peak if they also used less than 100mW when doing light tasks, and only a couple of watts doing medium intensity tasks. Or even if their lower power chips could get semi-decent battery life.

    • @tonyscaminaci7959
      @tonyscaminaci7959 Před 4 měsíci

      Intel uses heavy pipelining to keep clock speeds high but I have a feeling they don’t use clock gating to disable portions of the chip that aren’t being used at the moment. Clock trees typically consume as much as 50% of the power a device uses so gating unused portions of the clock tree is important to reduce power consumption.

  • @PersonSuit

    Very interesting results. Lower power mode really seems to keep the noise down and could open up a lot of potential. The M3 Pro appears to get the same single core in Low Power mode but with a 12,474 multi-core score putting it at the same multi-core score as an M1 Max. Sadly the single core is a solid drop of 1000 points in Low Power Mode, so it is possible that may be felt as most apps sill favor single core performance. In any case, this is cool and a good find for anyone who may need to do some intensive tasks in a quiet place. I will say however, that the information about the thermals was very disappointing. The M3 Max is now starting to show some similar behavior to the Intel chips. The M1 Max ran amazing, cool and quiet. The M2 Max ran hotter, but could still be pretty quiet. The M3 now runs so hot that it's impacting sustained performance and the fans are loud. It makes me worried for what the M4 and M5 will be like. If this keeps up the M5 will be as loud as any PC gaming laptop and get so hot we are right back to where we were in 2019. Apple needs to look into better cooling solutions.
