  • In this m3 pro vs m3 max showdown I compare these two laptops head to head in DaVinci Resolve. I show what it's like using each one as a daily driver as well as putting them under heavy load when it comes to video editing to see which one I really need.
    Sometimes the only way to find out is to do it yourself, so since no one showed exactly how I use computers, well this is how I use them so hopefully it helps you find the right computer for your work flow.
    Thanks for watching and if you are able to support the channel with likes, comments, or subscribes, I would really appreciate that!

      Out of the box the Max froze up when I was updating it... then initially the testing wasn't very different But, once I got it purring, it feels like it's on another level. I still think the battery feels significantly worse using the extra power but in my case it's worth it.
      I DO wonder what's right around the corner with the Intel stuff though... Is there any chance you would go in that direction or will you get the new Studio for sure?

      @@thesahdstudio I don't think I wanna go to old school x86. Going for the Studio when the M3 Max helps a lot as it's a workstation on my palm that I can transfer everywhere easily especially when I go away from my region. @thesahdstudio  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Thanks! And yes, a good step forward for sure. IF you are doing lots of 4k video editing, I think the extra encoders on the Max chips ARE worth buying. But if you aren't ever going to do much more than 1 layer then it's not a huge deal. The M3 Pro should be great. I ended up buying the M1 Max used which is better for video editing than the M3 Pro and is much cheaper than any of the other Max chips while still having great battery. Hope that helps and doesn't make it harder to decide lol. Save your money where you can. Really think about exactly how you will use it.

    I believe it depends a lot on what video editor you are gonna use aswell. Some might be more optimized than others or will be after an update. This makes choosing the perfect MacBook even harder.
    I’m in the same Windows boat. Coming from MS-DOS to 3.11, … but lately, since returning to iPhone, been thinking more of trying macOS. Would be a more desktop choice between macmini or studio for me, since i don’t really need to be portable and work/play around from home.

      Ok, so, the Pro could color grade just fine. That's no problem. The problem it had was it was quite slow when applying magic masks, adding 3d fx, and stacking timelines. The Max can do all of those things much better. The editing is buttery smooth although to be fair, adding 3d fx aren't amazing... but that's where computers with dedicated video cards pull ahead.

    I am programmer and photographer as hobby. now as a interest in photography and videography i am looking to buy mac to edit photo and videos but i am wondering which one to buy as i will probably keep it for another 4-5 years for sure. I normally record video in gopro hero 11 in 4k 60fps and currently wondering to buy macbook pro m3 pro 18gb 1tb here in finland. do you think its a good investment regarding those 4-5 years in hand or should choose its MAX version.

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Ok, so I haven't really edited with that Video Codec but either way, I think any of the MacBooks would be enough. The only suggestion I would have is that you opt for at least 32gb of ram. I am personally considering downgrading from the M3 Max to the M1 Max. But again, the codec you record in makes the biggest difference at all. If that codec is easy to edit OR you quickly convert it to, say, prores, it will make your editing experience so much smoother regardless of what computer you have. Have you considered refurbished ones from Apple?

    Thanks for video! I'm currently deciding on a MacBook Pro 16-inch for RAW photo editing and 4K/8K video work, and I'm considering three models: M3 Pro (12-core CPU, 14-core GPU, 36GB RAM, 1TB SSD), M3 Max (14-core CPU, 30-core GPU, 36GB RAM, 1TB SSD), and M3 Max (16-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 48GB RAM, 1TB SSD).
    Initially, I was leaning towards the M3 Pro, but after watching reviews, I'm unsure if it would be sufficient for the kind of processing I need. Given my intention to use this laptop for an extended period without frequent upgrades, I'd greatly appreciate your advice on which model would best suit my needs, especially in terms of video processing and AI advancements. Thank you.

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio  Před 5 měsíci +2

      I think what I'm learning about after all of this is that any one of those will be amazing for normal edits... However if you want to start playing around with Effects, that's where they struggle. I think it really depends on what kind of video editing you're going to be doing and what kind of codec you're going to be shooting in with your camera. Shooting an uncompressed files certainly makes the editing process a lot smoother but there are obvious disadvantages to that like storage size transfer speeds etc.
      These are the first max I've ever used so I don't have a ton of experience. However I am going to be returning this and getting the M1 Max at the end of the year so I will have videos up early next year comparing the M1 Max to the M3 Max so I'll have more information then. At this point though I think any one of them should be more than capable for you but I do like the saying a lot of people have mentioned... Buy once cry once. Lol. The max with the 1640 which is the one I've been using has been awesome I will say that and it smoked the pro in my testing but again I barely know what I'm doing!

Did you find that screen recording at the same time made a noticeable difference? also, maybe try low power mode on the max- I hear it makes it a bit less hot/loud. Not quite sure what the point is if it makes it slower- but maybe it doesn't affect it that much? Worth a try.

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Screen recording made no difference on either of them! I did use the low power mode but like you said it made the video editing experience worse and since that's what this video was about I didn't feel like it was necessary to talk about it. When I'm just using it at night time though I will probably keep it in low power mode keep the battery from draining because this computer definitely sucks back the battery faster. Like it seems like quite a lot faster. Having all the power available though is really nice. I'll talk more about the battery after I've had it longer and can use it more in low power mode... But yeah if you can afford it I don't think you'll regret it. They're both sweet but I just like having the extra horsepower for when I need it.

      @@thesahdstudio Yeah, for me it was just to cumbersome. I'm in and out of customers stores all day and spend a lot of time working out of my truck. I was using a 12.9" iPad for my job and just go tired of fighting iPadOS. iPadOS has come a long way (I had the original) and I still have a spot for the iPad in my life, but iPadOS doesn't compare to MacOS for getting work done. I'll always fondly remember the 16", but it just sat on my desk. The 14" is my Mama Bear. It's hooked up to a Samsung 43" and a 24.5" LG Ultra Fine at home and the screen is big enough for the day job. I can even tether the 11" iPad Pro in the field if I want a 2 display solution. It doesn't handle the task as well. The fans will come on when it's rendering for example... And it will go way faster with the max then the pro. The pro still does a really good job but you just have little split seconds that you'll be waiting around for. But it still handles 4K video editing pretty easy in the right codecs.
      For most people I think the pro is the way to go... But if you want to get better at video editing in 4k and have multiple stacked videos the max is the way to go for sure

      Definitely on team Apple. I have been using it since College. And while I'm very much a Windows user for work. Even there I'm on a Mac Studio. I really don't like the Windows OS, even though it pays the bills.
      I started life as a DJ, and when I went to College for Audio Engineering. Everything was running on Mac. So, System 7 was my starting point.
      Apple isn't perfect, but I do find that the system gets out of your way more, and you stop worrying about things that you would on a Windows computer. You just get to work. Get the best one you can afford. And you will most likely have it for many years.
      Also I really enjoy when people try a Mac when they have been heavy Windows users forever. Many for a very long time just ignored the platform without giving it a fair shot. I don't ever expect folks to give up Windows entirely, it does work and in some cases there are only Windows versions of an application. But, i'm seeing those that do try it, tend to appreciate it and really like the Mac and macOS. The learning curve can be a pain. But, most of it is customizable to get it closer to what yoru used to. It tends to just work with devices (with exceptions to docking stations). And they are shockingly fast at things with these M chips.

    Fantastic video man. Really detailed and well put together! I think I'm leaning towards the M3 Pro 11CPU/14GPU, 36GB RAM, 1TB SSD. My current laptop is the 13" 2020 MacBook Pro i5 16GB RAM and I have been using it for video editing for the past 2 years. It gets really hot and loud pretty fast. I use 4K footage. 8-12 min videos. I currently use iMovie but will learn Final Cut Pro or Davinci Resolve once I get the new laptop!
    I also use it for daily usage like surfing the web on Safari and Chrome with multiple windows open (and CZcams playing too). It tends to get hot and sometimes the fans kick on (especially if I'm screencasting to my TV). No gaming.
    Do you think the M3 Pro 11CPU/14GPU, 36GB RAM, 1TB SSD is good enough for me? Should I pay the $200 more to get the upgraded 12CPU/18GPU. Or should I shell the extra bit and get the base M3 Max?

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Thanks for the comment! And it's a tough call man... I'm not sure how complicated the videos you make are, but if it's just a somewhat easy to use codec and you aren't stacking files or adding many VFX, then any of the M3 Pro's should be fine for you... especially if you go the Final Cut Pro route.
      IF you think you want to start creating more complicated videos then it might be worth considering the Max... the extra video encoders are just so nice to have it really feels worth it. I would probably upgrade to the extra GPU's if I were you at the very least. That will be a sick little laptop for years for sure. And if you are buying new, at least you can play around with it for a few weeks, then if you aren't satisfied, return it and upgrade at that point.
      I ended up going back to getting the M1 Max which I'm on right now and am happy with it still. Depending on what AMD/INTEL are upto over the next couple years we'll see what I do next. If these Mac's had graphics cards or the ability to add a eGPU it would be perfect. But it doesn't so I've been a tiny bit underwhelmed by the video effects part of video editing with the Apple stuff.

    • @hewlittp456
      @hewlittp456 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@thesahdstudio Thanks for the detailed reply!! Maybe the upgraded GPU/CPU M3 Pro might be the move. But at that point it's just a few hundred away from the M3 Max lol. Apple really makes it easy to upsell haha.
      I record audio for my videos. Then edit it on iMovie. Then create a new movie. Then drag and drop the necessary footage where it goes with what I'm talking about. That's the most of it. Other than that, I'll add just some texts here and there on top of certain parts. I record 4K with my iPhone and drone. AirDrop the footage from iPhone and connect micro SD from to my MacBook.
      I'm starting to go more towards vlog/sitdown style of video where it's wayyyyy easier to edit since it's just the footage I take and then some cuts here and there as opposed to recording audio, recording video, then making the video. But I can see myself adding more effects/cool elements to my videos in the future as well for audience retention, etc.
      Also, what's codec? Sorry if that's a dumb question

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Oh it's all good. A codec is the type of file a video is recorded into. So our phones and cheaper cameras for example compress the footage into tiny files, and these files are actually quite difficult to work on because the computer has to decode (uncompress) the video footage then encode (compress) it on the fly. The Max chips have extra encoders/decoders which make working on those kind of files much smoother.
      Really good cameras don't compress the footage as much and those files are super easy to work on for the computer but they are HUGE files.
      I don't have experience with iMovie but in Resolve the Max was noticeably better...
      It's a tough call... at this point the M4's will be out in 6 months, so if you are paying full price you might almost want to wait unless you can get a deal or buy refurbed/used. Used might not be bad depending on your area... if you can buy one second hand with AppleCare then you might be able to save a lot of money!
      I ended up buying a used M1 Max with AppleCare. The seller actually got everything fully fixed under AppleCare before he sold it to me so it's practically brand new. I'd buy used again if it has AppleCare.
      Sorry, I'm not trying to confuse you. Like you said, it's so easy to spend the extra bucks. It's a tough call whether you need it or not. The Pro with the upgraded specs is probably more than enough for what you're doing and the battery/performance will be a bonkers upgrade.

I think a lot of us get deluded into justifying spending more money when we don't really need it. I suspect many of us could get by with a Pro just fine, even without upgrading beyond 18 GB. Do I really care if it takes me a couple extra minutes to render compared to a Max? Is that really worth an extra $2k on an already expensive machine?
    No matter what you choose, you're going to be using a dated model 3-4 years from now. I say don't spend the money unless you are prevented from doing something otherwise.
    I landed on the 16" M3 Pro. All I upgraded was the storage to 1 TB as I have 200 GB worth of sound libraries and I wanted some breathing room. It was tough to talk myself down from doubling the memory. I used many "future proofing" arguments on myself. But I'm glad now that I didn't do it. This machine is doing everything I need it for with ease.

      That's awesome... the Pro is fantastic. I ultimately caved in to the thought of 'More ram!' and 'More cores!' but did notice an improvement based on my usage. But I agree with you and I don't think most people would even notice the boost of ram and cores in their daily usage.

    I can see how that would be a tough call. I think part of your decision should be, in addition to the complexity of the videos you plan to produce in the future, is how long you realistically plan to keep the laptop you decide on. There are always going to be shinier new devices around the corner. I took a different tack when I migrated to the Apple ecosystem. I purchased a base model M1 Studio Max (32/512) when it released and then more recently, when I wanted to upgrade my travel device, purchased a refurbished M1 Pro MBP Pro 14 (16GB/1TB). Combined they cost less than the M3 Max MBP and meet my admittedly more modest needs (and budget).

      It sounds like you went with a logical thoughtful decision. Not sure if you followed along with the videos but I eventually returned the M3 Max and bought a used M1 Max (with AppleCare) for half the price. So far, it's been great! I don't really notice it being slowed than the M3 Max/Pro but the battery is noticeably worse while video editing. For normal power it's still fantastic though. @@thesahdstudio I haven't been following along very effectively, but I'm glad you got the device that works for you. For my use case the M2 and M3 chips just don't offer enough of a performance boost to justify the cost, so of course I think you made a wise choice with the M1 Max. Regarding the monitor, I can't justify the cost of the Studio monitor, especially after I got the M1 Studio Max. After watching another CZcamsr (I'm pretty sure it was Kyle Erickson, another of my subscribed channels) review the 27" 2K ASUS ProArt I purchased one from Amazon for ~$300US. I have been happy with it, but being overdue for an upgrade, I feel the urge to go back to Windows. I didn't see in the video or comments what the specs were on your 2020 windows laptop....gpu, cpu, ram, etc. It would be great if you could share that. The M3 Pro Max is too rich for my blood, but I could spring for the pro. It has extra video encoders on it which make a huge difference. If you look back at my recent videos you will see I started with the m3 pro but eventually got an older max because I just use it mainly for editing and even the older max is better than a newer pro for that purpose. I edit DCI 4K videos myself on the M1 Pro, it struggles when shooting 60fps. I went down to 24fps for a school project, since there was no need for those high frame rates on that, it was for a presentation my instructor did for extra credit points. At 24fps, no dropped frames, but the regular M1 on the 13" MacBook Pro I had wasn't dropping frames at 24fps either in 4K. When I do fitness videos, it'd be shot in 60fps, want smooth footage for those fast movements I do. I struggled with playing back videos in 4K60 on the M1 Pro. I didn't buy a Panasonic Lumix GH6 to shoot in bitrates and frame rates for enhanced quality, just for a computer to not play it back when editing.

      @SharrodVisuals yeah if you like using VFX etc there's just no substitute for a graphics card. They get so hot and loud but still. But at that point I almost would rather build a little desktop if you're just leaving it plugged in all the time. Tough call. For me I realized I really don't use that many effects, and the upgrade to the main video editing was just so big it was worth sticking with the Mac. Not to mention the portable power performance. I guess my main takeaway was that we're just not fully there yet. Maybe in a couple more years.

      I love comments like this... They are both good in their own ways right? For video editing nothing is going to compete when it comes to graphics and adding effects like a video card... All good! I have not had one single issue with heat or battery with the max. The M3 Max in particular had an insane battery... I could Video edit a whole afternoon and not even worry I would end with 60 plus percent... On my m1 Max after the same few hours of heavy editing I might be down to 35%... So while the performances almost as good as the M3 the battery definitely isn't as good... And I never notice it heat up either or hear it... So unless you're working on some crazy codec or having super stacked timelines the heat isn't an issue. I use h.264 usually in 4k and often have at least multiple videos stacked.

It's fast it handles most footage good and Studdards when you drop effects and stuff as you saw but if you aren't doing big projects you should be ok and it should get you through. I don't think pro couldn't handle the heavy work load I just think at the professional level every sec counts everything when it comes to studdaring and butter movements matter. Like if you editing a large project like a wedding you want the m3 max because you want to move seamlessly through apps you want the playback to run back smooth with effects titles stuff like that. If you doing heavy work loads like that I feel after watching this video you need the max. If you aren't doing big projects every week and just need a powerful machine pro with more ram and ssd you should be good. But if you are a professional you might just want to spend the extra money. In My experience Even the Max is limited for a real professional workflow, and it is because when production scale up You need something that can connect to a fast server to edit, and the dongles and adapters available for M1,2 and 3 are just unreliable and tend to disconnect.
      For example I'm now editing a show that is eating 96TB of space and I just cant use my MBP to edit since I don't want to spend $300 every three months on dongles that end up in the trash can.

      Yeah that's STILL a lot of money... but yeah that way you still get the encoders of the Max chip without as much overkill everything else. I'm happy with this M1 still, especially for the price! @@octny
