      Hi Art, would you take a look at “Just Josh” just published video on the M3 14/16”? It’s a sensationalistic video title but not inaccurate to the content because it does go quite critical about the MBP lineup.
      In particular, the drop in memory bandwidth is repeatedly throughout the video cited as an issue for photography/videography apps which is a different from your findings and assertions that the memory bandwidth doesn’t really matter and that the apps can’t take full advantage of the speeds. The presenter (Josh?) does appeal to his extensive experience with tech to supplement that his criticism holds weight and accuracy.
      A bit confused as there are two separate assertions about the impact of memory bandwidth. Would like for you to take a look at his findings/video. Thank you!

    • @108u9
      @108u9 Před 7 měsíci

      In particular his reply to “Plumber_Dave” in the comments of that video, there’s an assertion that memory bandwidth difference is the cause of the difference in performance you cited in your video. Maybe worth taking a look at that reply thread as well.
      Hope to arrive at a clearer, more accurate understanding!

    What's more important to me than Lightroom importing and exporting speeds is the responsiveness of the application while I'm using it. What are your thoughts on throttling and fan noise in the top spec 14" vs 16" M3 Max and also the base (14/30) 14" M3 Max? I have a nearly maxed 14" scheduled to be delivered next week and I'm having second thoughts on if I made the right choice after seeing Max Tech's youtube throttling test from today.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  Před 7 měsíci +3

      I think you'll be fine. This is a conversation that happens every generation since M1, this is nothing new. Not that the points are not valid but if you want small size and power, there are always going to be compromise. The point is that Apple won't necessary intentionally release a faulty computer. 14" will run hotter, yes smaller thermal dissipation, fan is louder, yes it does run hotter. But I don't feel it would be such a big deal. I got the M2 Max base in a 14" and despite the downside listed, it has been working fine.

    • @bladerealm124
      @bladerealm124 Před 7 měsíci

      @ArtIsRight how significant do you think the throttling is on the top spec 14" M3 Max vs the base 14" M3 Max and the 14" M3 Pro variants? I've seen people speculating that the the base 14/30 may run as fast as the 16/40 14" variant in many tasks due to the 14" 16/40 being throttled/handicapped, while the 14/30 version is both quieter and not being throttled as much.

    On a forum there is an interesting update concerning LrC and the Apple Neural Engine debacle. On his M1 Max 16" Macbook Pro 64gb he reports that LrC 12.5 Denoise AI using Monterey (Neural Engine still worked in Monterey) took 10-11 seconds on his 45.7mp Nikon Z9 photos. Now with LrC 13.0.1 using Sonoma it takes 25-30 seconds. I suspect Adobe detects that Monterey is running which has the working Neural Engine so uses it, but with Sonoma and Ventura it uses the much slower GPU. In this case it shows the GPU takes 3 times longer.
    On my M2 Pro 16" Macbook Pro 32gb I tried LrC 12.3 using Ventura and 13.0.1 using Ventura on the same 45mp Canon R5 photo. With 12.3 it took 34 seconds and with 13.0.1 it took 38 seconds so 12% longer. Topaz Denoise AI takes 9 seconds. Topaz has said in the past they use the Neural Engine and they also seem to care less about problems. They seem to continue to use the Neural Engine for the speed and accept the Neural Engine problems that sometime show up in images. DxO says they implemented some "temporary" kludge that allows them to use the Neural Engine and then fix the problems it produces (which probably makes it a bit slower). Since it appears the Neural Engine bugs are now permanent and will never be fixed then maybe Adobe should do something similar.

      @@ArtIsRight Here is one more bit of interesting information. He reported also that on his Windows 11 PC (i7-8900K, 64GB, Nvidia RTX 3070ti) that it takes 11 seconds, so the same time as on his M1 Max when on Monterey. As Adobe's Eric Chan wrote months ago they use the Nvidia Tensor cores (similar to Apple Neural Engine -- except the Tensor cores work).
      The M1 Max, M1 Pro, and M1 all have the same 16-core Neural Engine so we can expect that all of them on Monterey would be about 11 seconds, I think. The M2 Max, M2 Pro, and M2 all have the same 16-core Neural Engine and Apple says it is 40% faster than the one in the M1 series. So, we can make a reasonable guess that on Monterey the time would be about 6.6 seconds. The M3 Max, M3 Pro, and M3 all have the same 16-core Neural Engine and Apple says it is 15% faster than the one in the M2 series. So, we can make a reasonable guess that on Monterey the time would be about 5.6 seconds.

      @@ArtIsRight Hmm, maybe M3 on Monterey (or a fixed Ventura/Sonoma) would be more like 4.4 seconds. Apple says that the M3 Neural Engine is 60% faster than the M1 Neural Engine. Does this sound right?
      Of course, all of these are just guesstimates. It is possible that the Neural Engine is used in conjunction with the GPU, not totally replacing it.

      That is a good way of looking at it; however, LRC, LR, and other photo apps can now leverage the extra GPU inside the Max SoC; some of the performance improvements are significant enough to justify the Max, especially if you are a "Pro". But yes all of these machines are way more than what most really need at this point in time.

    Great and complex comparison. Sorry...this was driving me crazy - "attributing to" and "attributable to" show causality in opposite directions. Effect -> "attributable to" -> Cause. Cause -> "attributing to" -> effect (although counter-intuitively, "attributing to" really just means "the ascribing of a work (as of literature or art) to a particular author or artist") If you want to use the form "Cause -> XXXX -> Effect" it would be better to say "This cause is contributing to this effect." Eg. at 13:50 the clear way to show the relationship between cause and effect would be to say "The increase in the GPU on this system is CONTRIBUTING TO a much faster time..."

    I won’t use all the power of the MAX for sure.
    But I want to be able to game StarCraft 2 (via Rosetta 2), Covilizations 6, Sims 4, and some windows game via Crossover.
    Those games used to run good enough on my MBP 2016 Touchbar.
    Would M3 MAX really get me more FPS / resolution for those non optimized games ?

However, with the Z8, there is higher swap and noticeable mid workflow. Along, with probably contributing to some battery usage increase. 400+ photos is regular not quite 1000 like you tests lol

Same for the RAM 32gb is the bare minimum for demanding tasks and multi tasking do I’d recommend to go for at least 64gb of ram
    Always thinks s a ok g term investment and a long term time saving and benefits . The question is how much do you charge for the hour , how many days can you save over your investment
    This is why I don’t agree with your point. Of view in your review . Don’t minor the peace of mind . When you are on the rush it’s not 1 time 5mn saving but multiply by the number of consecutive works and time that you are saving . Moreover time
