    I asked my local bike shop (specialized dealer) and he said i am mentally challenged or something to do such a horrible thing like that. I did it myself then with a help of my friend. It works just fine on my diverge (2017). I used 113 chainlinks and it shifts in small small and big big. Smooth and crisp. Spin to win.

      Pretty unappropriate words from a bike shop worker. Are they really into satisfying customers or is trying to belong to the snob group of "you can only be a real cyclist if you follow the ridiculous unwritten rulebook of cycling" cyclists the really important for them? On the other hand my experience with a Trek shop is quite good, they were happy to talk abouth how they fitted a 44 tooth chainring on one of their Émondas for TCR.

    An alternative to using a big cassette is to use smaller front chainrings. Absolute Black to a matched pair of oval chainrings that they call 'Sub Compact' & you have the choice of 48/32 or 46/30. They aint cheap though! Personally, however, I use a 11-34 cassette with a 50-34 compact chainset. I bought a 11-36 mtb cassette intending to fit it to the bike for the Fred Whitton, but as we know, this years event was cancelled due to covid, so I'm saving it 'till next year.

      @@Hairymel there is no 11-36 11 speed shimano. you can use a SRAM pg1130/1170 or alternatives from f.e. Sunrace. 11-36 will work with medium cage 7000/8000 shimano 105/ultegra without the need for the wolftooth roadlink without problems.

    I have a 32 on the back for my Lakes and Dales rides, I actually had some tosser behind me last week say 'I wish I had your gears mate'. . . as he veeeeery slowly passed me at about 40rpm up the climb, also worth mentioning he actually only beat me up the climb (a 3.5km climb) by about 3-4 seconds in the end ..
    ...grinding a 25 up Hardknott pass at 45rpm doesnt make you hercules, it just makes you look like a bell end.

  • @rhinonostril
    @rhinonostril Před rokem +2

    Ok I’m still a bit confused as to how this can work. Derailleurs have something called max capacity which does not change when you add an extension like the road link. The capacity is the difference in number of teeth on the small and big rings on the cassette + the difference in teeth on the big and small chainring. The max capacity of the ultegra derailleur is 39T. If you have a 11-40 cassette the diff is 29 already which means that you can only have a diff of 10 teeth on you two chainrings. Is that the case? I thought you had a 46-30 chainring so a diff of 16. 16+29=45 which is way over the max capacity of the derailleur.

  • @Ricobass0
    @Ricobass0 Před 3 lety +3

    A word of warning to others who might want to try this - the Wolf Tooth Goat Link (WTGL) does not work with old type Shimano 105 rear mechs. It clearly works Ok for KK with her Shadow type Ultegra mech and may work with Shadow 105 but it does not work with the older 105 RD-5701-SS or GS.
    The reason is because the WTGL is about 8mm thick and STRAIGHT, you have to adjust the RD end stop screws a large amount. The inward low gear one has to go right to the end and at that point, you run out of cable pull because the ratio of mech travel to cable pull has reduced at such an extreme angle. If you try to wind the cable tighter to compensate, then the up shifts don't happen.
    I'm going to try it with a CRANKED hanger extender (like this smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B085ZC315L/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) and I'll report my findings.

    Now you're talking.....cassettes really do make a difference...I pretty much change stuff out quite often (a bit like the Spindatt channel)....I'm used to bigger cassettes on my mountain bikes (I have a 50t on trail bike and a 42t on my 29er hardtail) but have (in recent times), swapped out my 10 year old Specialized Allez to an 11-32 and 52/39 crank, I've recently changed my gravel bike to a 1x10 and it now runs an 11-36 cassette with a 40t crank and I put an 11-36 on my CX (commuter) with a 50/34 crank...
    It always makes common sense to be as (a) 57.....I'm not young anymore (b) I like working on my bikes (c) I'm an MTBer who has discovered drop bars in the last 6 years on and off-road so I'm used to lower gears and (d) What's a Strava KOM ?
    I just ride what I'm comfortable with gearwise and always favour a lower ratio as I prefer spinning and, as Katie mentioned, you can get up steep hills spinning......
    Cracking vid as always !!!

Each less than a mile and 10, 15, 25% gradients. I also really appreciate the climbs with data displayed. Makes it pretty clear what gearing you need, given the power you can achieve and the cadence you'd prefer to have. Keep up the good work!

    I just fitted Wolf Tooth Road links to my road bikes one which currently has 34T as biggest rear sprocket and the other 29T. If you have a short cage RD you might not even need a med cage which is what I have found with the 29T rear sprocket and Wolftooth. Short cage deraillieur still works fine.
    The Wolftooth road links cost around £24, so not cheap for what it is.

      The B screw hack works to an extent, but if you think about it logically what you are doing is setting the tension of the spring way to high for the cogs you use the all the time (which can cause poor shifting and premature component wear) all for the sake of that one gear you use once in a blue moon.

(9-50 with a 38 chainring) the issue you will come across is you have to have a 12 speed MTB derailleur to clear the 50 so if you are wanting to fit drop bars and road briffters you are kind of out of luck, but microshift now do a 12 speed bar end shifter that is compatible with MTB ratios for this very purpose. So now I have gone old school. 8speed 10-32 cassette to a triple 44-32-22 front.it comes out lower than my 30/40 sub-compact set up but much smoother. also forget 1x set ups for anything less than 10speeds if you stay mainly on the road but like hills imo. Go Triple

    Katie and Chris1275cc - I've looked at the Wolf Tooth website and they stress that you "don't exceed the capacity" of your derailleur. So using their logic with Katie's compact set up (50/34) - the maximum cassette would only be as Shimano states - a 34. So must I conclude that the use of a cassette >34, whilst possible is unlikely to be ever suggested by the engineering companies??!!

      It was actually about costs. If you can phase out triples you save on costs. The 46/30 is two thirds of triples we ran back in the day. Campag made a 50/40/30 and hybrids and tourers often ran 46/36/

      If suffering is that good run a 25 max sprocket and a 42 inner ring. You can suffer in the grand style of Lemond and Merckx. If you have 9 speed or more you will still have more gears than they did. Make it easier and more people will do it. Never heard anybody complain that their lowest gear was too low.

      Paul Sayer The GS (longer cage) version of the RD will take up to a 34. If you have the SS (short cage) it’s meant to be 28 maximum but you can usually use the B screw adjustment to fit a 32. Maybe a 34 will work too but definitely a new longer chain.👍

      A short cage shimano with take a 34 cassette with the b-screw turned all the way in, but don't cross chain if your using that set up. Option 2 would get a shimano medium cage, that'll take a 34 without any hassle.
