    Crazy to think that there are paid stations with less then 500 calls a year. We have more than 300 and are fully volunteer and we don't count medical calls into those statistics. I guess having people in the area all the time would be the biggest problem if station 47 would be volunteer

      Engine 47 will have a 4th crew member added in the near future, but no additional apparatus will be placed there. Engine and Tender 41 are usually 2nd due with 4,000 gallons of water, Tender 46, Rattlesnake Tender 251 and Elizabeth Tender 273 are close behind with 3,000 gallons each.

    • @SouthMetroFireRescuePIO
      @SouthMetroFireRescuePIO  Před rokem +4

      Most household fire extinguishers are ABC dry chem models that can't be recharged by a professional company. For those, purchase a new one for your home and throw away the old one. First, take the old one outside and spray the contents into a trash bag. It can be very dusty and make you cough, so hold the bag tightly around the extinguisher hose. Once the extinguisher is empty, you can place it in your regular garbage to be collected.

    • @SouthMetroFireRescuePIO
      @SouthMetroFireRescuePIO  Před rokem +3

    • @SouthMetroFireRescuePIO
      @SouthMetroFireRescuePIO  Před rokem +2

      If a call happens when the crew is outside they'll hear it on a portable radio and get a text message on their iPhone. It's similar to when firefighters are doing yard work or training outside. They also have the option of placing their Engine on a 1, 3 or 5 minute delay in the dispatch CAD system. Dispatchers will see the delay and may add a different unit to the call if it will have a faster response time.

      @@Cyedae that’s true of any rural station the choice for only 3 firefighters on the only rig for this station is very interesting. Usually a city with the money like SMFR has would employ more that what is necessary at rural stations, interesting reasons for only a crew of 3.

      South Metro is currently working toward minimum staffing of 4 on all Engines. Today, all aerials and select Engines have dedicated 4 person staffing. The Operations Division looks at a number of factors to determine the staffing level, including call volume, population and target hazards.

    What does it mean when an engine is "level 1"?

    • @risingjohn6448
      @risingjohn6448 Před rokem +2

      A Level 1 RIT is an engine company assigned from the initial alarm on an emergency event to achieve the RIT capability. The trigger is an incident dispatch potentially requiring the use of SCBA, to include structure fires, confined space incidents, or hazardous materials incidents.

    • @SouthMetroFireRescuePIO
      @SouthMetroFireRescuePIO  Před rokem +10

      At South Metro, "Level 1" means the unit (Engine, Aerial, Medic etc.) is parked near the emergency scene, usually 1 block away, and they haven't passed their last tactical option. That means they're at an intersection or place that's easy to turn around and approach from a different direction.

    Love station Saturday. The running track seems maintenance to clear trip hazards eg the small brush over the track. While the track has been there for along time, I see a hazard when running on the wall. The especially with the trip hazards. Then the fall potential with that and a possible miss step. I expecting a different kind of track.
    Great for fitness tho.

      Operations, Fleet and the Station Captains determined the smaller 1,000 gallon apparatus were sufficient replacements for Engine 40 and Engine 47 since nearby Engines and Tenders carry 1,000 or 3,000 gallons respectively. It will also allow these Engines to become more useful reserve apparatus in 10-15 years since they'll be small enough to fit in most or all of SMFR's stations.
