- Ride along with Battalion Chief Mauricio Segura for the first 24 hours of his 48 hour shift on South Metro Battalion 3. This busy day included responding to fires, physical fitness, coordinating crew actives, meetings, training and a sit down to talk about what it takes to be a Battalion Chief.
That’s a good Chief, gets involved and even does dishes. Power too you Chief thank you for your Service
Took the words out of my mouth
Yup
Amen. Those guys come back and see the BC did your dishes? Untucks his shirt and helps carry hose? Thats how you get your guys to respect you. He's got a million other things he needs to get done, he doesn't have to do any of that but he did.
Taylor Salva lead from the fronts how I look at it
I am a scout leader since I am only 15 and it’s hard to get my troop to like and listen to me and that’s just about 20 12-17 year old boys just for my troop and he can get 5 stations each staffing 7 to 14 depending. This is what a leader needs to be... involved my adult leaders for my troop tells me to not do as much as I do I don’t listen since I would not be doing things most of the time or I would be over doing myself. Great job chief keep it up... also I just used the word chief since I can’t remember what exactly you are.
I was an EMT with AMR in Seattle. I remember we ran a call with SFD and the Fire Chief was riding with the fire crew. The crew was on pins and needles because the Chief was with them and they even sent someone down to warn us. We ended up needing our stair chair for the call so I grabbed it and went up to the apartment. I looked at the Chief and said "hey Chief how are you? Would you set the stair chair up for me?" The fire crew looked at me like I was nuts, but he did it. After we got the patient down and loaded, one of the fire fighters walked over to the Chief and tried to take over folding up the chair from the Chief. I will never forget his reply. He looked at the firefighter and told him "I may be Chief but I'm also a fire fighter and I'm on a team. I won't turn down an assignment just because of the bugles on my collar." I respected the Chief before that, but I admired him after that. Pretty sure that engine crew still thinks I'm nuts for putting the Chief to work though.
When the Chief said "luckily we didn't have any meetings with people that need redirection or coaching up" I instantly knew that all he wants is for everyone to be successful and safe. No negative energy with this guy. That battalion is lucky to have him as the Chief. Great video guys!
@@davidanthony8017 That's the kind of fire officer that leads from the front!
Ko
In movies it’s fun to fire or give the talk to someone. In real life it’s the worst part of the job. You have tell someone that depends on the paycheck that they won’t get one anymore.
Even seeing him at the large brush fire taking with the older firefighter asking what his needs were and what his thoughts were and doing what the firefighter wanted/need rather then tell him I’m the battalion chief and this is going to be this way.
Chief doing dishes!? That speaks volumes. That’s a man of character and leadership.
everyone has to do the dishes
Now that’s real leadership there. Can tell the other firefighters not only respect him as a supervisor, but also love him as a person.
I only heard his voice as I was reading a another webpage and I couldn't help think his voice sounds a lot like Micheal Bay LOL
Who else loves south metro
They are a great department

Mark Aaron Clemons You make it in the 2020 hiring process? Where you coming from?
I am a retired fire captain and after stumbling upon this video it was easy to form my opinion on this BC, B3 is the perfect example of what being an operational leader in the fire service is all about! I may grab that part of your interview and convert as a quote in the future "...the higher up you go in the leadership/command staff chain the lesser it becomes about you and the more it becomes on your personnel and ensuring that they have what they need to do the job..."! Great statement! Thanks!
Thanks for your service
It would be interesting to take a look at the fleet services and the other administrative support operations
ehhhh
Same here
Do you mean fleet maintenance not fleet services
Owen fun we refer to them as fleet services because they also cover PPE maintenance, and other equipment logistics
@@v26224 they are not
As a Lieutenant for my department for over 6 years, I am always looking for ways to improve crew continuity. Chief, you are an example to all company and chief level officers. Thank you for your example. Scott
When they invite you for dinner that means you are doing something good, I work at a station with battalion chief and those 3 battalion chiefs from different shifts are badass
Now that is what a leader should be. Getting involved and supporting his staff. Great effort guys
This guy actually cares. These are the leaders we need
This has to be the most progressive fire dept in the USA. Kudos, you guys should be the model for all the follow.
Finally! Its funny that south metro PIOs are actually listening to our advises a lot! Keep up the great work
Toronto Fire Buff nice vids

Chief Segura would be a great leadership instructor. I've come back and watched this video a couple times when I need a reminder/inspiration when it comes to being a new officer
Cardio early. Great plan. This way your workout doesn't get crowded out. High standard of physical fitness. Amazing how different the mindset is when one gets west of the Mississippi.
The original gangsta cup makes this video top tier

That was great it gives you a good look at what it takes to get to the position of Battalion Chief Also how they get others to grow or want to move into the role of Company Officer.
Thank you for showing us your life as a Hero. Thank you and all firefighters for protecting us .
Very positive management style and I enjoyed the entire viewing thanks...

In my younger days, I would've loved being a Bat Chief on this dept( love the region, the diversity of calls, etc.)
Looks like a very professional agency and great leadership!

Very awesome video Cheif, thanks Eric.
Chief, I just shared this video with the US Army here in Europe. Your statement about "The higher you go, the less its about you" is remarkable insight to leadership. Truly a great leadership video.
You're welcome and thank you for your service. Its actually something that I got from a Colin Powell Leadership book and try hard to apply it in actions every day.
I love South Metro I’m a junior firefighter where I live be safe out there south metro
That’s a great program... my local department does not have it even though our police and medical has it our FD does not pre Covid I was hoping to convince my FD to restart the program now I hope they will next year.
South Metro you and people say it all the time need to do videos are your youth involvement since I know you have three different ways or more for youth to be involved.
Awesome! Coming from a career department, I love his perspective. 🇺🇸🚒
I live in Iowa and worked EMS for 15 years. I was like man that is a great wild fire unit and I forgot that they come from a area that has those. I love how in America we are so big that our EMS can cover some pretty good stuff. This agency is amazing and well funded. I know you can trick these type of videos but the stuff you can pepper in like equipment and how you treat new guys. The stuff from your CAD to radios to stations. All that matters and it shows how much your peers care about you.
Thank you for making this video. It's really a rare perspective.
So excited
Wow👏🏼very informative, great job on the video guys!
Great video and great information. Its not always easy as it looks.
It's clear that Chief Segura is a true leader. I'd love to to see Chief Segura and Chief Decker from Newark Ohio come together offer command and leadership training for the fire service!
I’d definitely sign up for that class
Definitely would like to see a day in the life of Med 1 or a district chief
Great look into the BC position!
You are the heroes!💪
Outstanding leader.
thats ME in the box truck at 14:10 :) thanks for all you guys do!
Small world! Thanks for watching!
To steal someone else's line SMFR looks to be the best of the best! Love the videos, they let others see a better way to do the job! Bravo!
This is some quality content. No shit talk, just reality.
Can you do A Day In The Life Of A Safety Officer? Or Ems Supervisor
They will do it. It's only a question of time.
@@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO do a day in the life of hazmat unit
