  • Last month I propagated boxwood and the cuttings have finally rooted. Today, I am potting up the boxwood cuttings to create a boxwood hedge around my water garden. I also set up a greenhouse to overwinter my cuttings in.

    Now this is what I’m talking about! This is my favorite video so far👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 every time I go to Lowe’s or Home Depot to get plants, I always come home with nothing but pine bark and soil. Lol I get 10 times the enjoyment out of propagated plants then store bought! Great video!! See you next week👋🏼

    You know, I’ve found that putting the cuttings under a cover with boxwood isn’t needed, those guys root so easily if kept somewhat moist, not too much, I use a perlite and peat moss mixture.

    Hi Dee, Really helpful video, thanks for sharing! I'm following a site that roots their boxwood cuttings in winter (semi hardwood, I'd say). Most everything is as you've done, except they don't cover them. I may have to from time to time, as I'm in Buffalo, NY. I'm starting a bit late to call it "Winter Sowing", as it's 2nd week of March right now, but still cold. They say I'll need to wait 2-3 months for roots, but they swear they get 100% rooted cuttings. Anyway, fingers crossed that I get some amount of success. I was wondering what month you took your cuttings, and when you actually made this potting up video! Thanks so much! Happy Gardening!

      @DeesYard  Před 3 lety

      Thank you!! 😊 I'm also originally from the Buffalo area!! My calendar says I took the semi-hardwood boxwood cuttings around July 15th and potted them up Sept 20th. I like to take my cuttings in June or July. I've never tried any other month for semi-hardwood. I would like to try the hardwood cuttings during the winter but, they definitely take longer to root. I'd say give it a try!! Nothing to really lose!! Happy gardening 😊

      @@DeesYard Thanks for your quick response! Wow... no one is EVER from the Buffalo area, haha! My husband was drafted to the Bills a million years ago ('81), so we married and moved here from college. (I'm a Philly girl, myself.) Even my boys skipped town after college (Las Vegas and Dubai). I can't blame them one bit! Anyway, last year I tried boxwood cuttings towards the end of August in a sand mix. Not sure if they ultimately dried out, or if my "everyday inspection" caused them to fail, (ya think?), or maybe just a poor time to try cuttings, but I'm trying this method for now. I just need to keep them misted, and wait. I can always try cuttings in June if I have no luck, but I'm hopeful! The success you had was amazing and inspiring! Thanks again for you reply! Just subscribed!

      @@jlnriddick Thank you 😊 I'm the exact same way 😅 always checking for roots when I shouldn't be and I've killed my share of cuttings from the typical rot (too much water) but, I've learned to enjoy the process. Each and every failure is a learning experience and I gain more knowledge from my mistakes then successes it seems with propagation 😅
      Buffalo will always have a special place in my heart. I grew up on 20 acres of land and we tapped our native maples for syrup out in Catt County. We moved after the "wall of snow" got us in Hamburg a few years back 🤣. Your husband played for an amazing team!!
      I'm intrigued by winter cuttings and would like to try this next winter. Thank you for the inspiration 😁

    Hi Dee, the link to the soil conditioner you recommended is no longer valid, is there another you would suggest using?

    • @DeesYard
      @DeesYard  Před 3 lety +1

      Oh no! I'll have to fix that. Essentially, you can use a potting mix but you have to be careful not to over-water and cause rot. Any bark based fast draining soil medium (such as pine bark soil conditioner) is best. It maybe easier to ask a local nursery if they have a bark or fur based soil medium. Again, potting soil is just fine but, I'd recommend starting in a pint size container with potting soil. I'll update the link so you can see what I use.
