- Austrolebias nigripinnis - also known as Argentine Pearl Killifish or Blackfin Pearlfish
This beautiful fish was one of the pioneers of the aquarium hobby. It was discovered in the early 1900’s in temporary ponds on the Argentine pampas northwest of Buenos Aires.
It was scientifically described by Regan in 1912. At first it was named Cynoleabias nigripinnis, but the name was changed to Austrolebias nigripinnis.
Visually this fish is drop-dead gorgeous. At least the males are. The females wear a drab spotted brown colour, and is a bit smaller than the colourful males.
Living in temporary ponds, these fish are annual breeders. The live hard and die young. They seldom live more than 9 months.
Austrolebias nigripinnis prefer slightly acidic, soft water at 15.6-20°Celsius (60-68°F) - and should not be kept at temperatures above 25°C. Higher temperatures will drastically reduce their lifespan. These fish grow fast, and they prefer live foods: such as daphnia, copepods, mosquito larvae and glass worms.
Often you see these fish kept in small unlit containers with nothing but the spawning substrate and dark muddy water, but they really deserve better. Like most other fish they really thrive and glow when kept in clean tanks with lots of plants. Lots of live food and regular water changes supercharge the colors.
Thanks for watching

Thanks a lot for making and sharing this video!
It is a fantastically beautiful fish and I have heard about it for the first time from your video! Thanks!
Beautiful fish. I was lucky enough to see them in their natural environment and collect them before their pond dries up along with some Austrolebias bellottii and Austrolebia monstrosus.
Whoa. That must have been fantastic. Cheers, Michael 🙂
I raised these six years ago. Actually, they were Austrolebias nigripinnis Soriano strain (the location). The males were just as beautiful as yours. I raised them for about three years and then they just "petered" out. It seems that the eggs lost viability which was probably due to interbreeding. It would have been nice to get a male from a different genetic stock to breed in at the time. But, I was lucky to get my original stock when I did and they were impossible to find when I needed the different strain. I could have cross bred a Molina strain into the mix at the time and wish I did because I would have had an aquarium strain then which I still might have now.
Inbreeding can be a problem in many aquarium fish strains, I've rarely experiented that with killies though. I have had strains of F. gardneri and A australe running for 6 - 7 years. I do try to get new blood in, when possible.
Thanks for your input. Cheers :0)
I've had a strain strain of A. bivittatum Funge (Chromaphyosemion) going for several years myself.@@MichaelJensensAquarium
I love that you take the time to film the natural behavior of your fish. So many videos I've watched will show quick close-ups, and then zoom out and talk about the fish while we stare at the presenter's face. I love how you narrate while we get to observe their interactions with one another. Seeing your substrates and plants are not only beautiful, but give us an idea of what type of natural environment would be optimal for a particular fish to thrive. I enjoy how mesmerizing and meditative your videos are.
May I ask what kind of mossy plant that is in the background?
Thanks so much for your kind feedback. Much appreaciated and sure encourage me to do more videos in this style. The plant in background is willow moss, a plant that grows in many aquatic biotopes around the globe. I collect mine in the ponds and lakes in my local area. One of my first films on this channel was actually about this plant. You can find it here: czcams.com/video/_qFvuD06FtY/video.html

These look similar to Pygmy Sunfish because of the blue highlights. I’ll be putting any of the above on a list of future projects. Thx!
They actually do... male as well as female. Cheers, Michael :0)
Wowww.... thanks for filming this. What a treat to see their beauty. Can't keep this here in Malaysia - too hot.

Yes, it is... Danish fish. 😜
But you can keep rasboras in Malaysia. 👍

Will do, could you subscribe to my channel. Hoping to get some good videos on soon. Need to work on editing though
Amazing video 😍
Thanks. Cheers, Michael :0)
Thanks for sharing. Important to know.
What about to use spawning mops instead of the peat ?
Some of the annual killis will spawn in mops as well, but I haven't tried that myself. Al my non-annual killifish spawn in mops, though. Cheers :0)
Beautiful fish and video. What camera do you use?
Thanks Peter. I used a Nikon 7100 D DSLR camera and an old Sigma 50 mm 2.8 macro lens. Cheers, Michael 🙂
@@MichaelJensensAquarium very good combi!
@@peterdenhartog60 It is rather versatile.
Wow. Great camera work!!. With such a short life span it must be a challenge to keep enough tanks going with fish of different ages so you always have beautiful mature stock? Since they grow so fast and die within about 9 months what do the last few months look like? Do they get lethargic and lose their color ? Thanks for sharing your passion.
For those interested in getting theses fish I might suggest contacting the American or British Killiefish Associations as some members are willing to ship eggs anywhere in the world.
Thank you for your feedback. Yes... they start looking tired and worn out, when their time is used up. Cheers, Michael :0)
Beautiful fish! Where did you get yours? I’d love to have a few for my small tanks.
Thanks James. I bough these in a local pet shop here in Denmark. Cheers, Michael :0)
Hej.
@@MichaelJensensAquarium Mange tak for svaret.
These share such a similar appearance to the Pygmy sunfishes, wow
You're absolutely right. Cheers, Michael :0)
Where can I get some eggs?
Hi Peter. Local killi clubs are a good place to start. cheers, Michael :0)
pueden vivir hasta 2 años y medio si se mantienen a baja temperatura por mi experiencia personal
You are right. Colder water prolong their lifespan considerably. Thanks for that added info. Cheers, Michael :0)
@@MichaelJensensAquarium love your videos thankyou for sharing your work
@@user-xe3gk6jm6q Thanks for your feedback. 🙂
