- Today I do some myth busting… and explain why I think killifish are for everyone... including you :0)
Killifish are an interesting group of small to medium sized fish - that live in a diversity of biotopes across the globe.
Even though these fish are among the most colourful of all freshwater fish - they have never really reached the same popularity in the aquarium hobby as say tetras, barbs and cichlids.
There are several reasons for that, most of which are myths that seem to be hard to get rid of. Today we take a look at some of those.
Hope you enjoy!
Cheers Ulla and Michael

You have an amazing assortment of killifish. I love the way they maneuver their pectoral fins backward and forwards feverishly yet stay in one place.
Thanks. Cheers, Michael :0)
Absolutely love your videos! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much! Cheers, Michael :0)
Killifish are criminally underrated.
They are so forgiving when it comes to water parameters and are the perfect beginner fish in some respects.
I had a golden wonder panchax that lived a good 6 years. It was an absolute monster. Unfortunately, it did try to eat anything below 2" (and mostly succeeded).
You are right about them being jumpers. I found mine under the tank covered in dust a couple of times where it jumped out during water changes. How it survived I don't know ..
I totally aggree. They are underrated, Andreas. A lot of killifish are downright easy to keep and breed. I am impressed by your old Golden Wonder, but typically the largest species has the longest lifespan. And they are survivers. In natural environments they are able to travel shorter distances over land to get to the next pond or stream. Thanks for your input. Cheers, Michael 🙂
Love your tanks-I have 4 killifish colonies.I absolutely love these fish.
Thank you for your feeedback, Melissa. Cheers, Michael 🙂
Sadly Killifish is underatted. I am from India and live in a big city but there is no aquarium shops nearby. I could only get some bettas and guppies. Killifish are not even here though other fishes are available. I could not even find aquatic plants for sale. I ordered some online bugt it came several days later with half of the plants dying and other half melting in my water. I seriously wish i would live in a place where i can be comfortable with my hobby.
Hi Kaizaki. Sad to hear, that it is difficult to find killifish and plants in your local aquarium shops. Hope you find a solution, that can give you more pleasure with your hobby. Plants collected in your local streams and pond might be useful in the aquarium as well. I collect a few plants in my local waters. All the best, Michael 🙂
@@MichaelJensensAquarium Yes Michael unfortunately there's no streams or pond in the city. I'm planning get the plants from local ponds and river in my native village the next time i visit them hopefully.
@@kaizakim4612 Sounds like a good plan. I wish you the best of luck with that. 🙂
@@kaizakim4612 Maybe you should look at some online options? India's a really large place, so I'm sure you'll be able to find at least one good website to get fish delivered. I live in New Zealand, which is tiny, but the online options are still really good! Best of luck.
Your channel is really underrated! You deserve more views
Thanks. 🙂
I stumbled across your channel and love the hell out of it! Thank you for your works.
Thanks a lot for your kind feedback, Richard. Welcome on board. Cheers, Michael 🙂

Wow, this is the best video on killifish I have seen! Absolutely beautiful. You did an amazing job capturing the beauty of these fish. They are quickly becoming much more popular. Thank you for helping bust these myths! More people need to experience these fish.
Thanks a lot for your feedback. Cheers, Michael 🙂
I live in Las Vegas and have a 1000-gallon pond in my yard. I went to a nursery that sells plants for ponds and a decent sized tub with plants was also teaming with Blue Tail Killifish. They didnt know how the fish got there but suspected the plants had eggs already attached. Thery were nice enough to scope out 25 of these fish and give them to me at no charge! They are thriving in my pond and even hatching fry which is pretty exciting! My question to you or anyone out there is: Will my Killifish survive the cold Las Vegas winter? the temps in LV during Dec-Feb can get as low as 50 degrees and 36 degrees over night. I would hate to lose these little guys as I have become somewhat attached to them!
Not that low
Hi George. I am not sure which species you refer to. If it is the Bluefin Killifish (Lucania goodei), the winter temperature should not be a problem. Hope that helps you out.
Cheers, Michael :0)
They’re my favorite fish. The only thing is I love rimless aquariums and most of my scapes can’t have lids due to driftwood sticking out. Been very conflicting this last 4-5 years haha.
I am constantly having the same internal conflict :0) I like open top tanks as well, so I have some tanks for that - and then some for killifish. Cheers, Michael :0)
Great video! you put in some nice work on it.
thyanks for your feedback. Cheers, Michael :0)
Rigtig flot video.
Hej Matti. Mange tak for dit feedback. Fedt at høre fra en anden opdrætter. Hvilke killifiisk opdrætter du? Mange hilsner, Michael 🙂
Look at those planter tanks, dammmmmmmm
I'm glad you like them. Thanks for your feedback. Cheers, Michael :0)
Great knowledge thanks for the info more often vedio of ur knowledge I like u
Thanks a lot for your feedback, Mike. 🙂
Michael, I am getting back into the aquarium hobby and I just found your channel and am enjoying your videos. I find them to be relaxing while also informative.
Would you be able to tell me what the dark green "moss like" plant at 5:29 is? I've seen it around in the few videos I've watched so far.
Thanks. Good to hear you are back in this wonderful hobby. The plant you refer to is Willow Moss. I have a full video on that plant on my channel as well.
Cheers, Michael
Great video. Which types of killifish stay closest to the top of the aquarium in your experience?
Thanks. All of the Epiplatys and Aplochelius species will stay right at the top most of the time: Golden Wonder, Epiplatys dageti, annulatus and a lot of others. Cheers, Michael :0)
amazing looking fish.
Thanks a lot. Cheers, Michael :0)
Beautiful video
Thank you Nicolas. Cheers, Michael :0)
I learned something new today thanks to you. I would like to ask about killifish( maybe you could do a new video ) : best aquarium size 10/15/20 gallons? Is it possible to mix different killifish together? For each aquarium: 1 pair? Male-female ratio ? Temperature?
Thank you again
Thanks for your feedback, Daniel. Generally killifish don't need large tanks, though a few does. Most of the killis in my aquarium room live in tanks from 4 to 15 gallons, and I have a bunch of 20 gallons as well. The live requirements vary from one species to another. If you go through the videos on my Killifish playlist (link below), you will get mere precise info on a lot of different species. Cheers, Michael

The only myth I wanted to be a lie was the jumper one, which was actually true. It is kind of impossible me to cover the whole tank top since I have a custom cover that have huge gap
Sadly they are notorious jumpers. I have a few tanks with gaps, that I cover with compressed foam material. But that isn't an option in every tank. Cheers, Michael :0)
What do you have on the bottom of your Austrolabias Nigripinnis tank? It looks really cool like that
Thanks. That is spagnum moss and catappa leaves. Cheers, Michael :0)
I'm sorta new to fish keeping maybe 5 months in. I really like them but I hear they only live a couple of years..
I have 5 tanks now which are dirted tanks except for one which is an all mbuna tank.
I'm definitely thinking about getting some.
How often do they breed to sustain a colony?
Hello, what's up friend, a question, the KILLIFISH could be in a community with the PSEUDOMUGIL, very grateful for your answer, greetings from Lima Perú
what lights are you using on your rack?
Hi, I use cheap flood lights like these: amzn.to/2MZBxun
Cheers, Michael 🙂
what are the fish shown at 1:20?
They are Fundulopanchax marmoratus . 🙂
Woke up today to my dead red killi .. got him 10 days ago and he seemed healthy .. was eating too. 🤔
That sucks. Hope you have others. Cheers, Michael :0)
In Malaysia only male u cant get...
It's not easy to find a female😢
That's sad. Hope you find some. Cheers :0)
