      A very emotional song too…at least for me. The beginning of the song being just the unanswered telephone tone…signaling that she can no longer speak to someone, presumably her deceased mother which the song is about. Recently lost the love of my life to illness, and still struggling with it, and I still sometimes call his number, even though I know he’s gone and won’t answer. I love the raw chilling honesty of the song and the open expression of the varying feelings of grief which never really go away. “I ran and I ran…I’m still running away…”

      the composition of this song is completely visceral, I don't think I've ever heard anything like it. The most subtle production and the super pure vocals, it even seems like a guided meditation, since in the lyrics she is narrating complete chaos. It's brilliant.

    What was Madonna going through, you ask? She was about to turn 40 (in an industry that had been calling her "old" for over ten years), she had her first baby with a man she wasn't in a relationship with (so she was a single mom), and she discovered yoga/Kabbalah and became a more spiritual person. She also had just achieved a career milestone by winning a Golden Globe for her acting in Evita, so she was determined to reach a similar milestone for her music... She won a video grammy before for her Blond Ambition tour film, but she never won a Grammy for her music and she had never been invited to perform at the Grammys either. When Ray of Light came out, she performed the coveted first performance of the ceremony and finally won two music-based Grammys: Best Pop Album and Best Dance Recording (Ray of Light), as well as a video Grammy for "Ray of Light".

    Madonna gave birth to her first child and then made this album. This is the best album of Madonna. It has won 4 Grammy awards and is listed among the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It is credited for bringing eletronica into the pop scene. She studied Hinduism and Buddhism before crafting this album. That's why it feels like you are meditating when you listen this album. Shanti/Ashanti is in Sanskrit language. The music contains bells of Hindu temples, pandits chanting mantras and praying to God.

  • @aquariusrising7019
    @aquariusrising7019 Před 4 lety +504

    The word gets thrown around a lot, but I truly believe this is Madonna's "masterpiece," and for an artist who's had so many hits, and strong albums, this is saying a lot. Mature, sublime and emotive songs done in an electronica-dance genre (which prior to was known for being a rather emotionless music genre) it game-changed what people thought of electronica and Madonna. The songs held up against the test of time just by virtue of being deeply personal songs that resonate trans-personally and spiritually. The lead single "Frozen" was a great example of what this album had to offer - chilly cold electronic beats, with mystical imagery and a soul-deep melancholy that only the acknowledgement of unrequited love can bring. The content ranged from the enlightenment and compassion having children can bring you, to the deep scars loss can leave and the heights of spiritual connection in a world that moves quicker than a "Ray of Light." It was one of the best records of the late 90's and a zenith for Madonna. 💙💙💙

    Ray of Light features Madonna's best vocal performances and most mature lyrics. It completes the trifecta of her most artistically fulfilling decade, which began with Erotica followed by Bedtime Stories. The 90s were Madonna's creative peak. Ray of Light still sounds fresh today.

    • @lowebr90
      @lowebr90 Před 4 lety +11

      I think her creative peak begins in 89-90 with 'Like a Prayer' (the whole album), "Vogue", "Rescue Me" and obviously the Blond Ambition Tour.
      I couldn't agree more that 'Erotica' and 'Ray of Light' are masterpieces. As for 'Bedtime Stories', it has its moments (the second half especially) but as a whole it was kinda of a letdown after 'Erotica'.

      @@lowebr90 if you really think about it, Bedtime Stories was actually her most important album career-wise because it restored public faith in her music. It showed that she could be sexy without being sexual. She was pretty much hated after Erotica. Bedtime Stories sparked her image rebranding that eventually led to Ray of Light. It's only unfairly overlooked because it sounds lowkey and tame by Madonna's standards, but was essential.

    This album was her "comeback" album. Throughout the entire 90's her image was at her most scrutinized, specifically following the Erotica album (which I really hope you listen to) and the SEX book. Although she was still doing somewhat well commercially, the media was painting her as a flop, especially compared to her peers who had major hit albums (Mariah, Celine, Janet, Whitney, Shania, Alanis). She just had her first child, came back from the filming of Evita, and started studying Kaballah. To the public, it was a new Madonna who was no longer interested in controversy and whatnot. All of the introspection on this album is her basically telling us about all of the pain she endured throughout the extreme hate she received during the 90's. Little Star is an ode to her daughter, Mer Girl is an ode to her mother, Shanti/Ashtangi is a mantra in Sanskrit, and Drowned World/ Substitute for Love is her confession of how she was unhappy with the life she was living, leading to her spiritual enlightenment. Glad you enjoyed!!

      Isaiah Crooks I get what you are saying, and yes she had some image problems... but, those problems were quite gone by the time Ray of Light came out. Take a Bow from Bedtime stories was her longest running #1 on the Hot 100. Following that, she had Don’t Cry for me Argentina. Even before Bedtime Stories she had a pretty big hit with You’ll see. A lot of people like to say “come back”.... for Madonna, she didn’t really have to have a comeback until maybe Confessions and even that is a stretch. Most artists would love to have he success Madonna had between Erotica and Ray of Light.

    It amazes me how a lot of people, specially new generations, don't have the capacity to concentrate for 5 minutes straight and just be in the moment and not expecting the next thing all the time. A 5 minutes song is not long at all, it's the average length of a pop song. But some people can't listen to a song without thinking about the next song, without having the urge for a song to end so they can listen to the next one. They can't simply relax, forget about time, forget about the next thing, and just be in the moment. I think they spend too much time on Instagram where everything is about the next thing, the next picture, the next story, the next whatever and nothing lasts longer than one minute.

She absolutely loves Lana Del Rey's newest album and one of her favorite songs on it is Cinnamon Girl, which is 5 minutes long. She should stop talking about the length of Madonna's songs (which most are 5 min) and just say what she likes or doesn't like about it.

After all she does concentrate on the songs and she appreciates the lyrics and the sounds, and sometimes she loves long songs that she don't want them to end. But sometimes she complains about the length of the song before even hearing it. But yeah, there are some youtubers who react to albums and are constantly waiting for a song to end so the next one can begin. And I know new bands are trying to write songs no longer than 2 or 3 minutes because they say people don't listen to songs longer than that. I think they're right! Younger generations can´t listen for more than 1 minute. They get bored so quickly it's scary. And bands are trying to adapt to that. It's so wrong.

The ‘self obsessed’ pop star. It’s like she takes a back seat, and take you on a introspective spiritual journey throughout the rest of the record till you get to mer girl. The tracks before it make it seem Like she made peace with everything hurtful in her life her mother’s death, divorce, media scrutiny, the dark side of fame, the challenge of raising a child by herself at that. All for her to be like lol jk I don’t have all the answers, I’m still lost in life. (She touches on this year’s later with xstatic process in American life)
    With the ending line « i ran i ran, I’m still running away » almost like this entire musical journey was null
    It just stuck out to me, because it’s just such a stark contrast to the rest of the album.
    Love this record!

    LOVED your reaction! to help you understand why Madonna is the legend? Her extreme catalog of emotions is her art. Not vocal range in the traditional sense, but range are multi-dimensional delivery. And lyrically there has always been a growth in her messages. She needs to say something important. In her more recent work, the use auto-tune is probably to conjure feelings that she hasn’t conjured up before. She is an artist that continuously competes with herself! And that is a hard undertaking!

    “Ray of Light” 🔥⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️was nominated for album of the year, it won 4 Grammys. It won MTV Video of the year for ROL track.
    Her vocals were to a new level due to her work in “Evita” which made her won a Golden Globe.
    Ray Of Light era comes from her journey through motherhood, her first child. Her experience on mysticism and Kabbalah.
    After 21 yrs, this album still one of my favorites beginning to end, and certainly I say that “Skin” and “Sky fits Heaven” productions are still so early for their time. These tracks can be from 2050, that’s why they don’t get appreciated well enough...
