THe only thing I disagree with your review is "Dance In The Dark" being not on par with the others, in my opinion is one of her most powerful songs. Not only she mentions Lady Diana, she mentions a bunch of other famous women, most of them beauty icons and actresses, who died in tragic ways - Marilyn (Monroe, who died of overdose), Judy (Garland, also self-inflicted overdose), Sylvia (Plath, suicide), and (Jon)Benet Ramsey (a six year old beauty pageant who was brutally murdered back in the 90's). It stresses how much their voices, now silenced, won't be anymore in girls (and boys too) who are going through similar experiences, and that they do not need to have the same tragic ends these women and girls had. "Find your freedom in the music (...) You will never fall appart, Diana you're still in our hearts. Never let you fall appart, Together we'll dance in the dark.") And the song is not only about someone pointing out someone's body in a negative way so much this person dislikes to have sex with the lights on ("Baby loves to dance in the dark, 'Cause when he's lookin' she falls appart."), it is about the insecurities inflicted in women in general by society and the industry, creating problems where there are none ("Silicone, Saline, Poison, Inject me" / "She looks good but her boyfriend says she's a mess, (...) Now the girl is stressed.") and how this destroys people's lives. You said this would be a song that wouldn't be as successful today, but I will have to disagree, exactly because of the times we are today, with all the feminist / LGBTQ+ movements gaining so much voice and power. Not to mention, "Dance in the Dark" has the sample of freaking awesome (and tacky) George Michael's "Careless Whisper" at the begining, which somehow is a reference to Gaga's own song about "dancing in the dark" ("I'm never gonna dance again, Guilty feet have got no rhythm, Though it's easy to pretend, I know you're not a fool").
Sorry for the long comment lol, I am really defensive with Dance in the Dark, that song is a masterpiece in my opinion, though I really love the Fame Monster in general

People can call Lady Gaga a flop all that they want, but there is no denying the fact that "The Fame Monster" changed the world forever. Music in 2008 was simply a smaller place. Event albums were scarce, music videos were dwindling in relevance, and award shows were almost uniformly boring. Stars like Beyonce and Rihanna were beginning to push at pop's walls a little bit, but weren't yet at the place of completely breaking the mold. The EDM boom, and accompanying explosion in festival culture were still a couple years away. Something big really needed to happen. It didn't take long for Lady Gaga to prove that she was the asteroid pop music was begging to have crash through it. Debut single "Just Dance" topped the Hot 100 for three weeks in early 2009, and "Poker Face" made her two-for-two a couple months later. Before long, this sexually ambiguous club diva with mainstream pop smarts, and underground grit was the biggest thing in Top 40 just in time for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where her surreal, macabre performance of new single "Paparazzi" scalped us all of our edges. And of course, the videos. "Paparazzi" proved her most striking visual to date, ante upped later that year with the landing of the "Bad Romance" clip, an extraterrestrial odyssey that proved instantly iconic, in a way videos weren't supposed to be anymore. Best of all was "Telephone," in which Gaga was joined by Beyoncé for a ten-minute, high-art-infused, road-tripping hodgepodge of Tarantino, Thelma & Louise and Japanese TV that became the first event video of the 2010s. Gaga celebrated her coronation as the franchise player of 21st-century MTV (and CZcams) by wearing a meat dress to the '10 VMAs, and finally Millennials had a pop star who could hold her own against Madonna and Michael Jackson. She took American mainstream music at one of its least-interesting and most star-power-deprived moments and made it bigger, weirder, more visual and infinitely more personality-driven -- in other words, much more fun. Lady Gaga is one of the female artists (the other two being Britney Spears, and Madonna) who made the music industry what it is today. ⚡✝🔻🔵🎺👒 #PutYourPawsUp

This is so true! And it's happening again now sadly :(! Once 2020 comes up, it will be time for a new pop star of the decade, so we're gonna need another Gaga to crack through this tiny pop lens that's being created again. We need someone that's as innovative and creative and theatrical as Gaga, or else pop music will become scarce again :(

So Happy I Could die is a contradiction. It's about relying on alcohol and drugs to be happy, she's wasted (so happy) while being depressed (i could die). Each song is a "Fear". This one is fear of addiction. The production and vocals in the chorus are purposely mellow and monotonous to contradict how happy the lyrics sound. GENIUS WOMAN

James Dean did three movies... was dead by the time the last , "Giant", was released. He died in 1955 driving a Porsche race car... his neck was broken. He was also allegedly bisexual, and he liked to be with macho guys while also being engaged to actress Pier Angeli (she was an Italian actress)... "East of Eden" is his first movie and the best. It's a Steinbeck novel. He's the prodigal son... "Rebel Without a Cause" is the one that made him the icon he is... a confused, outsider, alienated by the absent parenting and cruel suburban hoods... in 1954. Natalie Wood is his girlfriend in the movie, and while the movie was being filmed she was assaulted by one of the actors (she never said who publicly)... James Dean was her friend and knew something had happened, was protective of her... and also died young and tragically. He was handsome, but his acting for that time was considered amazing, because he was trying to really be the character... We must brunch !!! Love your reviews !

The bridge to Dance in the Dark lists a bunch of celebrities who died before their proper time. The song is about the fear of self; always wanting to be in the dark because she's ashamed of herself and she doesn't want to confront her flaws. I think your interpretation was pretty spot on though!
So Happy I Could Die is meant to be about her fear of alcoholism. Each song is about a fear, by the way. To me, I hear her singing about her best friend she's in love with who she goes partying with. She can only have a good time and be real with this other person when she has alcohol, though, so she can never fully give herself to them and her only solace is when she's sober and alone. When she says "so happy I could die and it's alright" I think she means that very literally. Her alcoholism could very well kill her, and maybe death would be alright because then she doesn't have to deal with her pain. But that's just my interpretation, the lyrics are really loose and could mean anything.

    Bad Romance: *NO WORDS NEEDED*
Alejandro: Sounds so theatrical and danceable. Just love it
Monster: At first, kinda boring, but, it got better from the second chorus til' the end.
Speechless: My least favourite, but, still a beautiful song.
Dance in the Dark: Mysterious, with the deepiest message of the album. One of the two songs which fit more in the album, alongside with Teeth.
Telephone: MY FAVOURITE. And the mv is everything.
So Happy I Could Die: Dark song, but, makes me feel powerful.
Teeth: It captivated me the first time i heard it. Don't ask me why.

This album is full of songs with double meanings, what's on the surface but mainly about:
    1. “Bad Romance”- Fear of Love
    2. “Alejandro”- Fear of Men
    3. “Monster”- Fear of Sex
    4. “Speechless”- Fear of Death
    5. “Dance In The Dark”- Fear of Self/Judgement
    6. “Telephone”- Fear of Suffocation
    7. “So Happy I Could Die”- Fear of Addiction
    8. “Teeth”- Fear of Truth
The real little monsters know that Gaga is much better than Joanne even with it being a good album. The fame monster is arguably her best work. And has always been praised. Not necessarily my fav of hers because for me it's between ARTPOP & Born This Way

love love your videos. Ok, so I was obsessed with James Dean as a kid. Basic gist James Dean is a 1950s movie icon who died young. He made Rebel Without A Cause, Giant, and East of Eden. Although method acting was becoming more popular, James Dean embodied the total "rebel" in conservative 1950s America. He emoted so much onscreen, he played a lead character that talked back to his parents, he was a bit of a misunderstood loner as his character in Rebel Without A Cause. What's crazy is that he died before he got super famous in a car accident which only fanned the fire of his fame when Rebel Without A Cause. Also being a "teenager" is a modern concept that I believe has its roots in the 1950s too...prior to that they were just young adults or kids...anyhow, I digress, lol. Looks wise, he's popular for having "dreamy blue eyes," a DGAF attitude, and I guess he is what some people today would consider "emo."

the songs may not be "timeless", but what people have to remember is that these songs were the START. Before Just Dance, even when Bad Romance was released, pop music didn't sound like this. She singlehandedly took the genre in a completely new direction, so props definitely have to be given to these songs.
