Actually, the worst thing about all these videos is that we don't know the grades of the examinees. We don't even know whether they passed or failed.

Hi all, I'm not an examiner but I have taught English to Japanese people and Spanish people. I'll share my thoughts on the video.
I think Rebeca would have failed, mostly because I could not understand what she was saying. I do not think the problem is her English level. She probably has decent reading and writing. However, I do not think she did the right preparation for the exam. If she did, I think she could do better.
Carolina made a few mistakes, BUT she had a good attitude and her accent was not too strong. She spoke a lot and answered the easy warm up questions perfectly.
Let's have a quick look at the questions and answers.
    Part 1
Examiner - "Tell us something about yourself."
Carolina - perfect reply, slight accent.
    Rebeca - ??? Marbeya ???
You should be able to say where you are from perfectly.
Examiner - "What do you do there?"
    Rebeca - ???
    Not a good start.
Carolina - again perfect reply, slight accent.
Examiner - "In what ways do you think English will be useful for you in the future?"
Another easy question to warm up.
Rebeca - bit better although I cringed at "for my yob"
She would have been better off repeating the question
"I think English will be useful in my job."
Even better would be to repeat the question but change key words to show off your vocabulary
"I hope English will be of benefit in my future career."
If she can't pronounce the letter j, she should avoid the word "job" and say "work" instead.
Carolina - nice long reply. English is not her "first language" though. Presumably Spanish is although she may speak another language at home.
Examiner - "How important is it for you to have internet access?"
Carolina - nice long reply with some mistakes
"I have to consult the internet a lot" not "make a lot of consults". Still, everyone makes mistakes and she doesn’t panic.
Examiner - "Do you work better when you follow a routine?"
Rebeca - Better reply but still a bit hard to follow.
    Use or rephrase the question.
"Yes, I work better/get more done/accomplish more when I have a routine because I'm more organised and I use my time more efficiently."
Examiner - "If you could make one change to the place you live in, what would it be?"
Carolina - I'm not sure she understood the question but her answer about moving abroad was not really what was asked.
    She could have said
"The economy in Spain is not good at the moment, so if I could make a change I would improve the economy so that my friends could find jobs."
I also didn't like her shrug at the end as it suggested that she'd run out of things to say.
Examiner - "What's the one thing you own that you couldn't live without?"
    Rebeca - ???
Again, I think Rebeca needs to use the question and speak in proper sentences.
"I couldn't live/I'd be lost without my computer because a) I need it for my job and b) I'm addicted to watching random CZcams videos."
Also, don't finish with "so". So what?
    Hope this helps.

I did this test last month and yesterday I received the Statement of Results. Before the test I was just a nervous wreck. I've never been so nervous before a test. I cried and my father was worried about me... When I went to the Speaking part of the test, one girl came out crying from the exam room. And I was next! I was so horrified that I just froze... I felt like vomiting throughout the exam. I'm so glad it's over now! I'm just happy that I was able to prepare myself for months in advance.

    • @agar0285
      @agar0285 Před 5 lety +1

Rebeca would have something like 150-160 (30-40%) and Carolina around 185(70%). Minimum mark is 142 (0-20%), to pass you have to get 180 (60%) and the highest mark possible is 210 (taking into consideration that this is a C1 exam).
To pass you have to be fluent, express your variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures and try to elaborate complex and long answers to the questions asked. Repetitions, basic language used everywhere or bad pronunciations penalise.
I've done the B2 recently and I've done better than Rebeca and scored 167 (to know the B2 marks substract 20 to all the previous marks, except from Rebeca's and Carolina's)
      Hope this helps.

    If this helps you,

First of all, I have read all of your comments here and some of them judging the examinees their accent due to they are spanish. Right, let's put it into the context. When you're taking an exam like CAE, which is the pre-step into the "almost" native level, some people are feeling the pressure and they are not getting a grip and as a result, it doesn't reflect the effort you made before the exam. It happens to anyone so many times when someone takes an exam, whatever calls CAE, FCE and so on. Thing is that, they are not getting used to speak with english people and taking that exam, that makes it harder to speak in another language and get out of your comfort zone if you let me say that. So calme down.
With respect to the exam itself, im gonna be impartial and fair and i dont wanna be rude to anyone, soif I make any apologise in advance. It seems Carolina has prepared this part much more than Rebeca. She is more engaged in the conversation and she is chilled, consequently her speech sounds more natural. Speaking of Rebeca, she looks like a bit anxious( and it's normal) that(nerves) can be an strong influence in her answers and not to give all the responses in the way she wants to.
All in all, given all my opinion about this speaking part (I'm spanish living in the UK) I must say Carolina would have got a good mark and Rebeca, in her case, tell her that I'm sure she prepared this part, nevertheless, that nervousness played an important role in her speech. I mean, put you in her skin. only if you put in her situation, you will know what Im talking about. Only to say you can do it Rebeca!!!
ps: both of them are pretty btw

  • @jacobalcuadrado5765
    @jacobalcuadrado5765 Před 4 lety

In these kind of exams they don't pay too much attention to pronunciation, because if you take the C2 of valencian, it happens exactly the same, some people pass even they don't have the best accent. Fairly or not, it's what they do. All my respects to both of them however if they got the title I believe my chances are almost 100%, I don't mean to be obnoxious ,honestly.
Good luck to all of you, sometimes you just need to believe in yourself and go straight towards your dreams.
