That video really boosted my confidence. If it weren`t for the video title I would never guess it`s an interview for CPE. Not only because of their accents, but also the plain language and structure used in responding the questions. I understand the the emotional factor plays a significant role here, but either way they do not reach what I expect to be an advanced (proficient) level.
Having accents is normal and natural, everyone of any place have their own. Michael Robinson and Richard Vaughan have their own native accent but they can speak almost-perfect spanish. You mean Pronunciation, not accent
What people sometimes fail to realize is that CPE oral examination is more about sounding natural and fluent, not accurate. Those girls were natural and managed to get through the questions communicating well. Yes, their pronunciation is not excellent, but I've seen English teachers with worse "oral abilities". What is more, the most difficult part of CPE is written exam, and they could do well as a whole if they are good in grammar and writing.
the truth is that people need to have a good vocabulary at this level, and they don't appear to have it. they make a lot of stops with "hmm" or "well", etc... and don't show that much variety
You have to be Spanish to understand their gestures, their way of behaving and answering. We are very spontaneous people and the fact that she doesn't agree and says it so abruptly doesn't mean she is being rude. She says it with a smile! Don't criticise just for the sake of it! It is true that we are not as good at languages are most other Europeans are, but these girls probably started learning English at 12, didn't grow up watching any shows in English, because here every film, TV program or documentary is dubbed, didn't have access to any books written in English and have achieved this level over the course of probably their highschol and University years!! Plus, the exam questions are difficult to answer and you don't have time to think of a proper elaborate answer!!
+Hewhohasnoname Again, I don't care if "the question are difficult". They HAVE to be difficult. Stop complaining about your country, if you want to live abroad you have to know the langage.
This is definitely proficiency level. You have to remember the examiner's marking criteria Pronunciation, Discourse management, Interactive communication, grammatical resource and lexical resource. Most of you are not considering these when you are judging. On what grounds do you consider this to be below CPE level?
Hello Stuart, well I don't believe there is good management of discourse at all. Answers are really short and basic. It looks like the examiner is talking with two children. Also, there is a lack of varied vocabulary and more complex structures. There is no use of discourse markers whatsoever. There is no interaction between the women. I would carry on but I just watched 3 minutes of the video. I don't think it is useful for people who are planning to sit for this test, honestly. I would like to see their marks though. That would clear our doubts.
I couldn't agree more, this is certainly not the level required to pass a CPE, I'm asumming though, that this is just an explanatory video of the different parts of the exam, and not an explanation of how a successful Speaking exam should be.
I always imagined CPE candidates to speak pretty much like native speakers maybe with a slight accent but sounding very natural but these two don't sound natural at all
I agree. I was afraid to take the exam because I thought I was not good enough, but seeing them it actually made me think I can go straight for the CPE instead of the CAE.
***** Calm down. I was just saying how I imagined the CPE candidates to be before I actually saw what they're like in general, well I took the CAE before so I know what it's like to speak in front of the person there and I don't think it made my English sound worse even though they ask retarded questions sometimes. I'm confused as to why my comment should sound professional? This is not my job...I'm just commenting as a regular person...:D
So, what kind of 'sophisticated' English you use in reply to Do you like to eat out? I must assume, based on your view, that they ought to have described the cook's life and how ingredients were grown/processed to make it meaningful? Mmm, I bet that must be gabbing on ...
I'm doing my cpe in Proficiency in May, I've only just started studying and I've been in the UK for around 6 months now.. Is this the level of English the examiners are looking for?
does anybody happen to know if they passed and what marks they got? probably this information is somewhere here in the comments, but I can't find it. Thanks in advance.
Ohhh my goshhh!!!, Why ever is everybody complaining about these women's level?, I have seen some people trying to show off with their "beautiful and impeccable" use of English and I can't help complaining about your command of english either!, get a fuc.......advanced English dictionary and then come back!!, ohhh by the way, pass the CPE as well. Thanks.
Because they`re procrastinating in each answer! It seems that they`ve got at max. a level of a first.... And I`m not talking about their grammar am talking about their pronounciation and neither it's fluently. CPE means nearly PERFECT speaking and a great many vocabulary! A wide range of different words and the correct use of them in each moment. So nobody cares about what you got little spanish boy this is a bad example anyway! They should have taken better candidates to show the world what to expect from that level!
When she answered the question "Are you a student or do you work?" with "I am working...", is that correct? Shouldn't she have made use of the simple tense?
Es como decir A sizeable amount of children and teens are getting fat nowadays.
I agree that their English sounds pretty poor to be taking the CPE but I think that what they mean by the example is not that they're the best or this is what you should sound like but just an example of how the people who take it sound on average. Which actually makes me feel good cause I wanna take CPE too and I think my English sounds way more natural than that so I should be fine:)
take care of: The CPE is newly revised for 2013 exams. The big news is that the Use of English paper is disappearing. Sort of. But not really. What’s actually happening is that aspects of the Use of English paper are being subsumed into some of the other papers.
I think the worst part about the speaking is when you are with someone and the other person does not agree with you, so far that's not a problem but when the interlocutor says: "do you agree?" And the other replies: "not at all" I think it is quite rude.
The problem is not the honesty, but politeness is not that hard. Specially when you are on a CPE-level, that you are expected to have a better knowledge of the language so you can give better and politer answers.
***** If your partner isn't polite enough, it does not affect your score provided you do your best. Being able to confront your partner in polite and agreeable terms may even favourably influence your results.
I'm taking the CPE exam soon and I have to say I am shocked by how easy the speaking part looks. I refuse to believe those ladies would pass the writing and use of english part
I must disagree with you, these students would not pass the CPE, CAE maybe and that's even pushing it a bit. CPE requires a very broad use of the English language as I think you know and grammar structure which is much more complicated than these candidates have demonstrated.
you can see that exam has been taken in Spain for the clothes the girls are wearing, that's why probably the level is lower. I heard if you want to pass the exams easier do it out of the UK!
