I've seen kevlar mat available all over ebay. You can lay it like fiberglass mat on the inside of the door. You need at least 5 layers to impede handgun rounds. You need tempered steel plate and reinforced hinges to stop rifle rounds. I've thought about doing the mat to my truck before. The plate is cost prohibitive and it really messes up the the "M" on your A=F/M. It does really help your sprung weight for ride quality though. ; )

There's a device that allows the vehicle to stay on to power the lights and sirens while the officer is not inside. This also powers off the engine if anyone tries to put it in gear! A great addition that could be added to this custom police interceptor.

Hope your putting some Quality even performance brakes on that thing!! Also you should do some performance upgrades on the cop car, even some suspension like performance bushings/sway bars etc to help when hes chasing after people.

Hey Chris, when will episode 4 come out? The bullet-proofing one and all that stuff? I wanna have interior visor light-bar. Not the strobe one or anything like that, just a normal clear one. Do you maybe know what range those visor lightbars have? Cause if it only lights up the vicinity then it's kinda pointless. I'd like them to have a range of a long beam, or something similar.

+jospi2 Bingo, they are fairly light and cheap.
+jospi2 I think that is what will happen. They sell "expired" vests which work just fine. I just need to figure out how to secure them!
+ChrisFix I wouldn t recommend that for many reasons. The biggest being those plates are ceramic. Once shot you must replace.
The second reason is that plates actually do lose it s ability to perform over time. There is lamination in the plate that starts to separate when exposed to extreme temperatures, dropping, sudden temperature changes, etc.
I would prefer thinner and lighter treated steel over ceramic for it s durability, longevity, and assurance.
I have made a separate comment you could look into.
My experience with bulletproof: I depend my life on my gear to protect me (military). Also shoot steel targets on spare time.

bulletproof to which caliber ? AR500 plate could be an easy way to do it, not "cheap" but still cheap.

Mike Hilinsky Have you ever shot a phone book? I guess you don't watch Mythbusters. Anyhow, uh, yeah those big ass phone books will stop most rounds smaller than a .50 cal. So yeah, behind a car door filled with the yellow pages I would trust it. While you're saving up to armor one door, I'll have my entire car filled with phone books flipping you the bird as I drive by. Deuces know it all.

+1 on the AR500, although AR400 would still stop handgun calibers and be relatively cheaper.
+ChrisFix If you are looking for level 3 protection you could buy used kevlar panels. I believe bulletproofme has them for $20 or you could buy a surplus European vest and take out the kevlar panels. I don't think you can use steel without building custom hinges.

Even if it's not going to happen, cheap bullet proofing is possible (for handgun-ammunition, at least):
Sometimes one can buy pre-used bulletproof vests when people grow out of them or quite security jobs or if equipment gets replaced.
Then one can buy those and glue the kevlar-inserts from the vests to the inside of the outside-part of the door.
The glass can still be easily shot out, but the door itself will need a (high-powered) rifle to pierce through.

There is no cheap way to up armor a car door. Adding weight will cause hinges to sag or fail without some type of reinforcement. If you use a soft material it will cost a pretty penny. Then you need to think about what threat are you trying to stop? Handgun is the easiest to defeat and the cheapest. If the officer doesn't have a good vest then put the money towards a couple ceramic plates and a good carrier. Up armoring a door is time and a money hungry project that if not done properly will only give a false sense of security. There is a good reason it cost a ton to have a pro do the work because you are now sticking your neck out that what you are giving back as a product will work. I would pass on this unless it was my own car for research. If you make a mistake you could cost him his life. I don't want to be a downer but just pass on this.
+KD0LRG Used kevlar panels are relatively light and cheap. They should be good up to .357 magnum. Plus DOJ studies have shown that kevlar doesn't really degrade with age.

I am genuinely questioning this "cop" friend now. So we know this is his "off duty" personal vehicle. Why does he need bulletproofing? As working for a law enforcement agency, none of our marked units or detectives have bulletproofing, and they are drug task force vehicles. Even so, the LAST thing you want to do is go "cheap". This guy must be going after some hardened criminals on his days off.
Then the off-road LED lightbar, you know, the one that is for off-road use only. Yeah, be a shame for an officer to break the law by using that on the road. And the el-cheapo LED lights and siren. SMH.
@ChrisFix, I love your channel, but to me, you're really on the fence about illegitimate use of emergency vehicle. Even if your friend is a cop, it sounds like these cheap mods he is having you do are not with his superior's blessing. I cannot think of any chief that would allow their off-duty officers to have their personal vehicle kitted out. It creates liability for an agency. If I saw this thing going down the road, I would call my captain about someone impersonating a police officer. This screams nothing but a mall security guard with failed dreams.
+Raptor05121 He doesnt need bullet proofing. I am doing it for fun. Instead of being so critical why not think about what I am doing. Who said the LED light bar will be used on the road? It is to light up an accident in the middle of the night where there is no light or to light up a place for a medical helicopter to land. There is no liability because this car is only being used in emergencies that he encounters as he drives to and from work. He is stopping to save lives so why not have lights and a siren to lessen the likelihood he gets hit by a car and so people can slow down? It sounds like you are concerned about abuse of power or something like that which is not the case. Or maybe you just dont understand the project...
It's a little off but maybe the laws and resources are different where they are. My initial thought was that if his department thought he should have a vehicle then they would issue him one. The liability can be shady if it is a personal vehicle and he's off the clock....then there could be a jurisdiction issue where the high ranks may appreciate but not really want the assistance and liability. Without official plates it could be dicey if he hits someone or if he gets hit. His insurance company may not cover him if they find out he's running with lights and sirens. Most full time Leos go out of their way to not be "noticed" and steer way clear of "wackerville". Like I said...could be different where they are though.
