Love it. I took my great grandpas '65 6 horse johnson seahorse and got that thing up and running last summer, now Im working on a '73 18 horse evinrude fastwin. You guys were kids when these things were brand new, that had to have been an awesome experience.
Sure is rewarding bringing these babies back to life, It's so satisfying; mentally , physically and spiritually when we accomplish our inner self. Sounds great but I do know what you mean when we like a bit more of what we hear. Thanks, great job.
The smile on your face while running that older motor is great. Thanks for the entertaining videos. 🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it
Mike, I remember those boats in my youth! We are from Costa Rica. A friend of dad's had one of these SeaNypmhs style boats in his property close to the mouth of the Tárcoles river. The Tarcoles river is the second river in size in Costa Rica draining the Central Valley -where most people live- to the Pacific Ocean. His aluminium boat had two extensions -perhaps filled with foam- in the transom to aid carrying a larger motor. He had two motors. One Johnson 18 or 20 and one Evinrude 9.9 he carried both when going out fishing.
Dad had his property also close to his friend's. It was a prefabricated cottage that he an a friend carried in a Land Rover pickup in the 1960's to the property. There was an improved road and the Tárcoles river had to be crossed by a barge pulled with cables. Dad had a fiberglass boat very similar to a Chrysler Sport Valiant from 1969.
Of that era only the 1969 Chrysler 20 Hp survives to this day -my parents as well! I use the Chrysler 20 on my Boston Whaler Sport 11 updated with a teak console and seats, plus a small trailer which dad didn't own, so launching the boat into the river was a beast of a job. Today in the underdeveloped trailer boating industry in Costa Rica is a beast to launch a boat but there are some ramps.
What kind of oil do you use in that sweet motor? Congratulations on your boat day! It seems a bit too cold than what we're accustomed here in Costa Rica! Our biggest lake called lake Arenal is some 4 hours away from home so I cherish the time when I go there with my kids!
Beautiful motor and super video!
Your friends in Texas!
Always look forward to watching your videos
Keeping it like a great neighbor hanging out and hitting the lake after a project is fantastic!
Just a thought on low idle problem coming off high speed , my 15 hp mercury had a low idle clogged and was rough sometimes stalling , I rebuilt carb and found metering hole really clogged, after cleaning it ran great!
Keep it real and positive my friend!
Right on! will do and thanks for watching
Michael as always thank you for your help in understanding the process of troubleshooting the outboard motors I even watch your videos multiple times really helps me learn have great Thanksgiving and Christmas Chris 🎄 😀 😊
Thanks 👍 Same to you and yours as well
Man your videos are genuinely awesome!
Glad you like them! It's much appreciated.
I really enjoy your videos!
Glad you like them!
they are the best i have my dads and 2 others lots of good times with those motors
I love the little ugly motors.
Just picked up a 61' 18 hp. Need to change impeller and new coils, other than that, it's in immaculate condition. I Just need a bigger boat now.
Great video. 👍
You can do it!
Yes, your videos (and others) provide great guidance and inspiration. To be honest, the 18hp is bigger than I thought when I went to pick it up. But I couldn't past the great deal, and the kind elderly couple that sold it to me also gave me a seloc manual. 😳
I was smiling from ear to ear.
i am impressed with the high end of that thing. i might suggest the purchase of a tiny tach so you have a visual for tuning. they use a wrap wire on the plug wire to inductively pick up the rpm signal. not real expensive last time i looked you can get name brand around $60.00. that lug between idle and wide open is inherent on 2 strokes. here's my take on adjusting---------- warmed up close the throttle butterfly a little at a time while peaking the rpms constantly until you are 2-300 rpm below listed idle speed. watch how much it takes to raise and lower the throttle with the mixture screw.(use this as a feel for the next step) with it peaked then turn your idle stop screw to get the idle rpm desired then back out the idle mixture1/8-1/4 turn to richen it up. if you idle all day it will be harder on plugs but the average person its fine. with a richer mixture it evens out when you get air in. i always run my 2 strokes on the rich side just for better lubrication both on idle and high speed adjustments. lean is how they burn up. maybe you'll be able to out run that drone lol
Great information, thank you, that drone can run 40mph, I would love to be able to outrun it.
I got a ‘66 18hp fastwin, probably my favorite lake and river fishing motor on my 13’ Gregor, not the fastest motor I have for my boat, but it trolls all friggen day without even a little cough.
Beautiful thing when they run like that.
I've got a 70 18 horsepower Evinrude had it on the lake once 20 years ago now I'm rebuilding it from the bottom up hope still runs but that little Burger hauled butt that brought up memories back but I'm getting my back on the lake very soon
Get that thing on the waterl
Can you give pointers on the best settings to start that motor? I have just purchased a 1959 sea nymph with an 18 hp evinrude fast win just like it and I haven’t yet started it. The original owner started it when I bought it but I can’t remember how he set the carb and choke to do so!
Looks like fun
for sure it was
Have you checked the gaps on the points? I had a hard starting 1975 Evinrude 6hp that didn't like to idle. I spent a lot of time messing around in the carburetor before I found that the points gaps were too close.
yep new points and gap inspected.
Just got one no carb tho any help finding website to get one please
Your vids are great, a mix of tech, info, and fun. Just put up my boat for winter, Johnson 28 long shaft bought it new in 1992, still going strong. I need a prop I think, spins out going full throttle sometimes. Looking online there’s so many places to get one.Do you recommend anyplace thanks!
Solas is a good source for props at a good price
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina thank you
Hey!
I watched your video where changed out the solenoids in the Impala transmission. I have a 2011 Chevy Impala LS and the problem I'm having is it won't move in drive. It'll move in reverse as well as 1st and 2nd gear and when I hit 20 mph I can shift into drive and it'll go. I want to know, if I change the solenoids, would that fix my problem or is there a deeper issue? Your response will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Your issue is much worse than mine was. How often has the trans fluid been changed? Does the current fluid look dark and smell burnt? Did this problem slowly get worse or happens over night? Many factors to consider. How many miles on the transmission?
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina It has about 177,000 miles on it. I haven't had the trans fluid changed since I bought the car in 2017. I recently replaced the cv axle and some of the fluid came out and topped it up with new fluid. It was kind of dark but it didn't smell burnt. It jerked sometimes, not often but last week, while I was driving and came to a stop, it wouldn't move in drive anymore.
I just got one of these motors and I was hoping you could point me in the right direction of a new prop.

I've heard you can turn the 9.5 Evinrude into a 15 with a carb change. Do you know anything about it? I have a 1969 9.5 that I would like to try it on.
If you got to a website caller Leroy's ramblings there is a great deal of information on the years where this applies.
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina Thank you Mike.
@@64samsky I think that to get a true 15 hp from a 9.9 you need the bigger carb plus the 15 exhaust.
Might want to watch the used market, might be cheaper and a lot less aggravation.
@@kentyler966 I'll look around and see if I can find something, thanks!
Do you ever see these 18 HP Fasttwins in a long shaft? Are they like most other Johnson/Evinrudes where you can just swap a lower unit from about a late 60's model all the way into the early 80's?
Not sure on these just yet. I think they have a similar style spacer maybe like the ones in the 70's and 80's versions
I have an 18hp fastwin long shaft. I'm pretty sure you can just swap the lowers to make it a short. Mine is a 1968 model. Electric start. Awesome motor. I'm always looking for videos on CZcams for this motor. This is the best video out there.
I just recently purchased a 1977’s seanymph and it has the same motor that is on that boat. I’m having an issue with it driving you can have it at low idle and it will do fine but when you open it up it wants to jerk jerk like it’s jumping out of gear and once it jerks once it does it the rest of the day and it’s starting to concern me. It’s to a point where I don’t want to drive it at all. I wanted to get your opinion on it, and I know it’s not the propeller because we fix that already thinking that was the issue. Just see if you would try to get with me on that and Thank you.
Sounds like a gear box issue, bad drive dogs or not adjusted properly. Thanks for watching
Thanks gonna take a look at that in the morning and thank you for responding
She was purring
Some good stuff. Thanks for watching and commenting.
what lake do you go to that 18 would go great on my other boat
Coralville Lake it is called.
nice video, what kind of drone are you using? i bet its a dji, thats what i have and it works great,
The newest mavic pro
It's a DJI Mavic Air 2
@@Kirky64 Yeah what he said.
"To many motors" like its a problem ;-) The 18 doesn't do to bad!..
It's a sweet problem to have, I also liked how the 18 fastwin performed. It will make someone a happy boater someday.
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina I thought it scooted pretty good! Keep em coming!.
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina czcams.com/video/3mQylNuAv58/video.html
You have friends out in AZ! ;-) take care
I love your videos, but I'm having a problem with my outboard or should I say fuel line or gas tank. When the tank is sitting flat the primer bulb won't hold a prime, turn the tank on its end and it works flawlessly. It holds the prime until the motor sucks up the gas.
You make have a bad primer bulb. They are kind of a one way valve.
What's an Evirude? Are they compareable to Evinrude?
Oh man. I am so careful to proof my stuff. Missed that one, I will be editing that tonight. Good catch. And yes they are so similar they are practically the same thing.
The fastwin has a angry little sound to it.
She's a runner. Going to be hard to let it go.
