Hi Michael! I greatly appreciate you showing every step of your work from start to end. As a complete novice with boats and no expert friends/family your videos are a gold mine of information. It's great to learn how to care of boats and motors from different manufacturers through the years. Thanks for everything you do!
Awesome, thank you! Your word are very kind. Thank you for watching and commenting
Glad to see you uploading more outboard videos. I’ve enjoyed watching
Plenty more to come. Than you for watching
Nice detailed breakdown and reassembly! It's those details that are so important in a video that can help us who have similar motors that need some TLC. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for commenting and watching
Nice little motor! I learn a lot watching you chase these things down.
Thanks 👍
Great job on the video...really enjoyed it....and learned lots. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you and Thank You! It is the deep insight and detailed description on methodical trouble shooting which helps me become a better expert. Your patience and persistence is valued!
Thank you for the kind words. Much appreciated
Love your videos, I just recently scored a 1962 Westbend 18H.P. Silver Shark. Great running motor.
That is awesome! Thank you for watching.
Thank you very well done. I learned a lot and I appreciate very much!
thanks for watching and commenting.
You Just stole Me Heart,, I love these Fast twins.. Special place in my Outboard memories 4 sure. ,, kodbassi
Thanks for watching. I enjoy your channel. I have learned a lot watching you. Keep up the great work.
Great video! So much not quite right ! Got one I’m going to recon! Much help , thank you 😊
Good luck! thanks for watching and commenting
Gracias mucho, this really was helpful, getting ready to do some work on a 1963 Johnson 18 hp. Your demonstrations on various things to look for trouble was key in understanding what to look for if not running properly.
Appreciate the time you took during your presentation.
Glad to help
Thanks for being so detailed , working on a 1978 15HP motor now,, same problems no spark and lots of worn out timing ignition advance parts,, will add bushings and hope for the best!
Glad to help and good luck
Heyy thats my old motor😁 I knew that shop messed something up didn’t realize it was that bad glad ya got her running right can’t believe I found ya small world
I like these old motors. Can’t wait to try it on the open water. Thanks for watching. It will show up in some more videos. Stay tuned.
Michael I 💘 how you repair motors not just replace parts and find the cost effective ways to do so kudos 👏 to you Chris from OHIO
Glad you enjoy the videos. Thanks for watching
Hi I love you video and learning from them. Just got my self a fast win seems to have high consumption
Great to hear! Fastwin's are one of my favorite motors
That motor looks like its within one week of being new they were so well made. I know those motors like the back of my hand and you taught me something with the wire location. I use those Chinese coils now too sometimes I will have to look at that wire location issue in the future thanks great video. I have always used OMC coils and German coils in the past didnt have that problem your videos are very informative ...Glenn
Thank you and thanks for watching. I watch a bunch of other guys work on stuff here on you tube. Always nice to pick up on a tech tip or trick.
Beautiful little motor there
Indeed! thanks for watching
Great video. I learned alot. I has a fastwin also.
That's awesome!
I have a 72 Johnson 9.5 I’m trying to fix and enjoy leaning from your videos. I saw somewhere that old timers like the J6 plugs because they run hotter. Keep up the good work
That is correct. The J6C will idle much better. Toss the cheapo Chinese plastic carb floats, they weigh more and screw up the mixture.
Interesting. Thanks for watching and commenting
Thanks for the plug info. Thanks for watching and commenting
Good to know. Thanks
Another great video Michael. Always loattention
I appreciate that
Back in the day I was a OMC mechanic. Worked on a lot of these. Spark and fuel check 183, 614 times. Pull the flywheel, replace points and condenser. Gap points and check coils. Only had to replace coils once in all my years of twisting wrenches.
Carbs were often encased with oil crud and needed to be placed to be disassembled and the body placed in carb cleaner. Replace float value and pin. Repack high and low speed jets. Screw them back in. Back off about 2 and 1/2 turns for baseline setting and then you should be ready to go. Out on the water adjust jests lean and rich. Have fun...
When I had a coil issue I just replaced the "whole" mag plate that had all parts set to fac specks.
Good information. Thanks and thank you for watching
Thanks for the additional info. I wondered how to set the low speed screw.
Holy cow. Nice trouble-shooting. Whoever did the maintenance on this should have all his/her tools taken away. Thanks for sharing and taking the time to record.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching and commenting
On a somewhat related note is it just me or are mercury parts 2-3x more expensive and less durable than OMC parts?
I like your videos
thank you.
I just got one of this is a storage room auction. It was covered up and unsee able. A bonus but very rough
mak her run again
Really clean for 50 years old
Yes as you can tell I was pleasantly surprised
Great vid..
Thank you and thanks for watching and commenting
The original points had a convex shape on the movable side of the points. As they get worn in the contact point becomes larger. I remember that from the factory clinic I went to in 1962. Funny how things like that pop up in my head sometimes.
good to know. Thank you for watching. Wish I had more outboard experience. I'm learning as I go.
Would like to have seen you take it out on the lake see how that bad boy runs and then how you fine tune the carburetor overall engine looks good very clean seems to run good have fun
Weather has tuned cold here. Believe me if a warm day is on the horizon we will put it on the water
I have a 1964 evinrude 18hp fastwin and it looks identical to yours. It's been a great engine. I now have fuel issues. been thinking about just selling it.
Well if you were close I would buy it off of you. Fuel system is a simple one on these. New pump and carb kit and you would be back in business.
I bought a 9.9 mercury from a boat dealer it was used but ran great. So out on the lake I went having fun till it died this was the first weekend and he said he would go half and half if it needed anything. So I took it back and got it fixed he said good news it’s fixed but my half was 150.00$. I paid it and back on the lake till the next weekend and crap it died again. So I hung it on a rack till a guy ask what I wanted for it and not be happy with it I gave it to him. He took it home and fixed a wire and it started first pull for him. I guess he sold it. But the boat dealer has gotten BAD reviews from me ever sence. I won’t go back to him for anything. The next closest boat place is 35 miles more but that’s where I go.
this is precisely why I learned to do the work myself and I do these videos to help others do the same.
When I set points I adjust the first to spec and the second set I adjust with a self powered test lamp to open exactly 180 deg from when the first set opens. Really helps with idle.
sounds like a plan
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina I used a stick with a hole in it and a nail for a pointer placed over the crankshaft. And marked the breaker plate at exactly 180 deg apart. Initially with just setting the points to the correct gap the opening of the points was probably 20 to 30 deg off from 180 for the opposite set of points.
Just picked up a 67 for 200 just as clean as this or cleaner looks like original motor maybe ran less then 100 hours this video is my research for the morning 😂
I believe that is the same basic powerhead as the 1957 18 hp I worked on / un seized..... I would be surprised if that motor has 20 hours on it.... very cool
It is in good shape.
Nice video, now you got me wanting one of these motors.
I really like your logic and explanation. Been watching you for a while now.
What was the brand of the points you've used?
New subscriber. Thank you Micheal!
Glad you like them! Sierra or the OEM ones seem to be best.
Got one just like it and just as clean . Guy i bought it from restored it . Electric start stopped working. Got that fixed now it shocks you when you touch anything metal on it
Exciting for sure.
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina do you know what would cause the shocking ? Maybe bad spark plug wire ? Or bad ground somewhere?
I got a 71 18 horse evinrude when I unscrewed the drain screw on the lower end about a half shot of water came out the oil seemed good and clear looked new , any thoughts
A lot of times the tune up can be improved with the proper tool to set the points. The tool goes on the crankshaft , has a pointer that passes over the outside of the stater plate. On the outside edge of the stater plate are 2 lines cast onto it, they are 1/4 inch apart. when the stater plate is rotated by hand the points should open electrically checked with a test light.
Thanks for the tech tips. Much appreciated.
I been working on a.used 1972 evinrud 18202r. I got.the spatk, clean the carb, set the contact point to 0.02 but I cant start. Pleaee help if you have something in mind.
Hi mike can you give me the link for the points for the 18hp fast win please, also where you get your coils from, thanks Tony
Another good video in the vault. Sound quality in your video seems to be improved did you make any changes?
Yes I have, I am using a go pro now and I am trying to monitor the sound level better in editing. It can still be improved.
What is the brand of your points? Did you get the coils from Amazon? I have 2 ordered from Amazon that are the same color and wires are located on them where yours are. The green one you have looks like the the ones I ordered from Amazon. Does your green one that is still on your engine have the wire location like the one you couldn't use?
You'd be surprised how much better that engine would run if dropped a can of Seafoam in 5 gallons of 40-1 mix fuel. Run it wide open for 20-30 minutes then have a glass smooth idle. I have one like it( Johnson) and have to pull the flywheel occasionally to clean the points for better fire to plugs. I've had mine since 1975, bought used, and have used it since.
It's running much better since I did some more tweaking. I have used this mixture to clean engines. I will most likely run some through. Thanks for watching.
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina Good video Michael. I am working on a 1974 25 hp Johnson that I am having the same trouble fine tuning the cam linkage and the carb to allow for a smooth idle. The coughing and quitting at low idle is a problem. A video on your ideas on "tweaking" would help with ideas toward dealing with these issues. Thanks for your help and insight.
Cripes, I would have put a 10 HP sticker on it and called it good.
That's funny. Thank you for watching
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina It's a great show, You do solid work and I learn a lot!
Liked your video on pertronix electronic ignition upgrade to mercruiser. Did you have a ballast resistor wire to deal with ?
I did not have the ballast wire to deal with on mine.
You should look into getting a good used dyno for outboards
something to think about for sure.
Hi Michael, Great show I've had similar problems with the electrical on a 9.9 I was playing with. I'm curious who do you buy your parts from?
marineengine. com
do you have a parts list for these old 18hp? i just picked one up thats pretty rough. plan on going through it like you did in this video, just need to find all the seals, impeller, etc etc. any help with finding parts?
marineengine.com
Appreciate the content! Have a 71 18hp fastwin that I'm trying to smooth out. Found a cracked Oil return hose. Anyone have any idea what the function of that hose is on these older model two strokes?
I wish I had an answer for you. Thanks for watching.
Another great video. I am learning a lot from you. “ Thank You “ But, Am I wrong , I didn’t see a stream of water coming out ( I call it peeing ) while it was running. Could have been the angle of the camera.
This one doesn’t have a pee hole. It sprays out just above the water line
The tattle-tail feature appeared on OMC motors round 1976 depending on models.
it says TOP on the timing cam to indicate up. not top dead center (although it is close enough run),in order to set your point gap use the widest part of the cam where the woodruff key is. so set your .020 gap to that key.and it will run a bit better.
Good to know
Hi Michael... Just wondering how hard is it to hook up steering and gas cables to these motors. To steering wheel and gas lever?
finding the parts would most likely be the worst part of doing it.
How do you feel about using aftermarket ignition/carburetor parts vs.the OEM parts? Aftermarket is cheaper but are are you better off with OEM replacement parts?
Well some of the OEM is still made overseas today. So some of it is good and some is not so good. OEM is better though from what I have experience.
Hey Man. Hope all is well. I have a 71 18 HP Fastwin. I have to replace kill switch also. Question, does the circuit complete to kill the engine? I just need to put a new rocker or toggle switch in Correct?
Yes just a new switch. It grounds out the spark. Doesn't need the kill switch to run, just to shut it down.
Just bought a boat with this motor. Is there a specfic site you went to for parts. Looking for shroud cover gasket.
marineengine.com. Not sure if the shroud gasket is still available. check it out.
Hello Michael I have the same motor on my 14 foot outboard I want to put electric starter on it do you have a video on procedure of doing it if not could you make one you're very good at this I enjoy watching your program thank you Michael
I don't have a video on putting electric on the old 18hp, maybe some day, thanks for watching
Can you tell me why my evinrude 1969 18hp fastwin is putting a black oily soot on the transom ? Thank you in advance
Sounds like she may be a bit rich on the air/fuel mixture. Some of it can be your two stroke mix as well.
Actually, the black coil is the latest factory ones, they are good.
Good to know. Thank you and thank you for watching
Which marine grease do you use? Nice videos!
I'll have to take a look at the brand I have been using and I will get back to you.
I have a 1966 18hp fastwin and I have been looking to add a starter to it but can’t seem to find a part number for it. If you still have this motor does it have a part number on the starter? Thanks for the great videos and help in advance
are you talking about the pull starter? Check out marineengine.com
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina not the pull starter I have one on there already. I’m looking to add an electric starter with bracket.
I have tried marine engineering.com they don’t have it listed.
Would your parts prices be able to be mentioned as you work through your outboards? Or a purchase price range?
I can start doing that. Good suggestion!
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina I was just thinking if I knew what a coil or a set of points or a carb kit would cost, it would help me or others in deciding what a part should cost in a project.
Good morning Mike I have a 1958 Evinrude jubilee motor 18 horse I need to know where I could get them parts from can you let me know thank
marineengine.com
Please tell me the brand of points we need to install. Thanks
Sierra
What brand points did you use?
Sierra or OMC
Michael..love the vids…what is brand of points please
sierra points are the ones that I'm having the best luck with.
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina thank you Michael
I’ve got a 1966 or 1967 18 horse evinrude and I’m looking for parts and am curious where you get them from?
marineengine.com
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina it’s a 18702R. I can’t find the right year though.
Hey was just wondering how you removed the fly wheel
You need to use a three bolt puller on it.
I have one and It keeps jumping out of gear would you know why?
either it is an improperly adjusted shift linkgage or worn parts in the gear box
Thanks for the video...I have 1972 18hp.....with electric start.....whats the old white Merc?....I have a white 1963 Merc 500....or 50hp
They are mid 60's, one is a 6hp and the other is 9.8hp
I have the '73 model, sure hoping it continues to run as usual, BUT will be back here if needed. Wish we could puts muffs on it though, the barrel is a big pain. Thanks! Thanks for watching and commenting
Are the replacement coils Sierra??
They were not Sierra. They have a funky looking name. Got them off of Amazon. The ohm reading on them are good. Just that one wire in the wrong location. Thanks for watching
Ive tested coils and continuity and points gap and I have no spark at all !!!!
Why would a fastwin not get spark on the bottom cylinder
could be a couple reasons. Coil, points, wiring. You just have to track it down.
What did you pay for it if you don`t mind me asking? And how much did you end up putting into parts?
paid $250 and put about $150 in parts
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina I must say, I watched the whole thing before giving thumbs up. Especially after how clean it was on first open. Could you solve it ? Nice work Doc.
Could you point me in the right direction oh a starter bracket and starter for a 64 18hp fastwin
Search eBay will be your best bet
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina thank you. Do you have a Facebook I can contact you on. I'm pretty new to omc and would like to touch base with you
Shame on you for editing out the part where the motor stand falls over when you take off the lower unit.
Believe it or not I caught it. Thank goodness. I was wondering how many people would see that
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina I believe it, you definitely saw it starting to tip. I think the part name you're looking for at the end of the video is Cam Follower.
I saw 👀 that.
Haw can I get the brand of points?

Might ought to check the crank seals...im sure their as hard as the lower unit was....
Most likely
I need a ?..Fasting. 😁💙

What is the yellow boat?
It’s a 1972 Glasspar. I have a 5 part series on restoring it.

50 years old. Still works
What can you buy today that lasts like that
Not too many things, maybe a pencil and that's if you don't use it LOL
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina great channel by the way. Based in the UK.
Looking forward to seeing your ski boat series
The high side is to Rich lean high side then dial the low that is why it was rich and still to lean on iddle
Ok, thanks for watching
2 words, fixed jets! I guess you could add solid state ignition as well!!! Sorry folks, that engine should be put out to pasture!
I think the guy gave you a bunch of B.S....Good video on trouble shooting and what you may find on an old outboard..
I don't feel he mislead me on purpose. He just had a little bit of trouble with it that wasn't able to be figured out. I have a lot of patience when it comes to stuff like this and I hang on like a pit bull till I figure things out.
Is this motor for sale?
It might be if I get it running a little better. I was thinking of keeping it, it’s such a clean neat old motor but I’m not married to it. I only sell them if they perform as they should
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina let me know if you decide to sell it
A coil locating ring is great at dispensing one from a lot of frustration. It insures simple hassle-free proper clearance with the flywheel. Richardsoutboardtools.com offers an exact replica of this original OEM tool.Check his site for various great tools he builds himself. No I'm not sponsored, just an outboard tinkerer that whishes to share his passion.
very nice. I may just have to buy one
Those motors coughed when they were new.
Did not know that. Says a little something about the engineering back then. Some of it may not have been up to par.
Leave the shift linkage cover off.. and this motor gains five horsepower
Whaaaaat?
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina hahahahah, less restriction we know, but does it get better top speed that way is the question
I quit using an impact to turn my motors over because I've cracked a few points cam gear because of overnighting the flywheel nut....mostly on 15hp and under with aluminum flywheel...just sayen...
Great tip
You bought an outboard without even pulling the engine cover off? Hmmmm must have been a great price of a deal...
It is what I do, buy them non running for a good price then video the repair to help others get their old outboards back on the water.
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina well that's definatly why I watch you and you do a great job of it.....thanks for the videos that makes sense for the sake of a video....wasn't trying to troll you but cringed when you said you never looked at the engine before buying....keep them coming and I will keep watching...
