- Let’s discuss how Jack Skellington became the Pumpkin King! With this title he’s unofficially the leader of Halloween Town who is praised, loved, and adored by the citizens he lives with. They fawn over him, listen to his every command, and respect him as the most frightening creature alive! But what allowed him to be crowned as king? I think Jack Skellington’s bones were ripped from the ground so that he could be the king of the pumpkin patch, and I think the entity who chose him was the Spirit of Halloween.

I always loved how casually annoyed jack was when he enters boogeys lair. Just laying down with the "hello boogey" it was the perfect confidence. He knew he was the pumpkin king, and he knew boogey couldn't stand a chance.

I was always curious to the fact that Jack and Sally could see what Christmas’ true intentions were supposed to mean in a way, but none of the other residents in Halloween town could understand it

There was actually a gameboy game called "Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin King" which gave a version of a small backstory. One of the descriptions say Jack (implied to be an ordinary citizen of the town) and Oogie were rivals or something. Oogie tried to invade Hallowentown to establish his bug holiday and Jack defeated him and rescued Sally who was kidnapped for the first time (which is why she fell in love with him). The citizens apparently proclaimed him "The Pumpkin King" for his heroism and saving the town
Not sure if it's considered canon but it's the closest thing we have apparently

I would be interested to hear you go into the backstory of Oogie Boogie and how he went from being the King of Halloween Town to being replaced by Jack Skellington, and being put under what I assume is a form of house arrest.
If I remembrer well, there is an old prequel vidéo game : The Nightmare Before Christmas -The Pumpkin King. That game explains Oogie´s situation and how Jack met Sally.
And then there is a sequel to the movie, an other vidéo game : The Nightmare Before Cristmas - Oogie’s Revenge.
Oogies revenge that was indeed a great highlight for the PS2 version of the game. It was creative and indeed had a long story plot and the buttons you'd have to press to make jack dance with grace and fast movement during a boss fight scene. Not to mention the soundtrack that I loved it's a shame I can't get the game I've always wanted to.

I mean all we really know about Sally's backstory is that she was created by the local scientist Dr Finkelstein out of stiched up bits corpses and stuffed with dead leaves plus I think it would be interesting to touch on why Sally is very rebellious towards her creator other than he thinks that she isn't ready

knowing the spirit of Halloween itself chose jack that would explain what was keeping him in the world after being the headless horseman maybe the Halloween spirit (presumably Michael Myers) chose him so that oogie wouldn't be causing much trouble
Halloween is celebrated to honor those who died for their beliefs. As a mortal, Jack must have honored that hence why he is the Pumpkin King in his afterlife.🙂

I always thought that Sally was the embodiment of the Spirit of Halloween herself, which is why she was so drawn to Jack and loved him so much. I don't know, that's just what I always believed.
I presume uh he actually got some help from *his friends from the other side* which I mean he was indeed an Easter egg or part of the shadow demon crew of the Doctor Facilier

Easy in Halloween town I think they hold some kind of competition were who is the scariest of them all and Jack is the best at scaring people then he is known to be the ruler of Halloween town known as the pumpkin king
Further, I think the competition is Halloween night itself and they crown a new one each year which is why we are introduced with the seeming coronation of Jack as the flaming pumpkin. Keep in mind Halloween did just end at the start of the movie and jack spent November and December trying to learn about Christmas and preparing for it.

I think that Jack Skellington is actually Victor from Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie and that all 3 are connected and document his life from childhood to ghost etc
When Victor did eventually die, he somehow ended up in Halloween Town and grew in power to become the Pumpkin King

Jack saying "And since I am dead" doesn't mean that he used to be alive. Halloween Town isn't an afterlife, it's a manifestation of the holiday. Everyone in Halloween Town would understand that they're odd to others. Jack, for instance, is as immortal as the undead, but that's because he's a skeleton. As Halloween Town is not any afterlife, it's impossible that Jack used to be alive. The only citizens in town who might have used to be alive would be the ghosts.

I always thought the Pumpkin King was more so title that Jack has rather than being an actual monarch as he's not referred to as your majesty or your highness everyone just call him Jack but also the fact he lives in just a house sure it's a nice house but it's not really a house you would associate with a monarch as well as the fact that the gates arn't heavily guarded either so I like to think that the Pumpkin King is more so a title he's given because he is the scariest resident of Halloween town and I guess the Pumpkin King is a title similar to being president i guess they now that I think about it it doesn't really make sense why his fellow politician the Mayor I would say he's only an elected official he can't make decisions by himself

The scene with the burning Pumpkin Headed Scarecrow suggests to me that Jack died a traumatic death caused by fire. When you may ask? It would be in October of course. He may have been a man accused of witchcraft (it would have been much rarer to accuse a man of this crime) or murder & burned alive as punishment or he had been a crop farmer whose best time of year for business was Halloween, since pumpkins were his main crop, a fire would break out on his farm at some point in his life whether it be by accident or deliberate arson caused by a jealous business rival destroying his living & causing his demise.

@@PUNISHERMHS_2021 ok so this is my idea that I also put in the comments of NC's review for this movie: let's follow the epilogue of the original soundtrack, where Jack and Sally are now happily married and have five children. It's Halloween once again and they're excited to go out into the Mortal World and do their stuff. Now for the villain: I'm aware that Oogie Boogie is a fan favorite but I feel he's been used enough so for this sequel...I imagine not ALL those kids Jack visited completely got over what happened that disastrous Christmas Eve. Not only do they find out he's still alive (he's already dead, duh), they plan to kidnap him, seeking revenge for that other holiday being ruined.

This may be irrelevant, due to the game either being canon or noncanonical, but in the 2004 video game, The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge, the very beginning scene introduces Jack as the winner of the award, The most Spines Tingled BY a non corporeal being. A non corporeal being being someone or something that is true essence that exists non-physically, whether as a soul, as energy, or as an abstract concept. This leads me to believe that Jack, along with all the other residents of Halloween Town are merely the concept and essences of the many different elements of Halloween, with Jack being Halloween itself. Halloween Town is place where the holiday can live and thrive as it's own being. And the same can be said for all the other holidays,

The "Spirit of Halloween" could be the Grim Reaper who is seen in the opening number. Not only does the Grim Reaper represent the death of all things, including the changing of the seasons (thus making him the embodiment of the Halloween Spirit) but it would make sense for him to have the power to ressurect Jack as the Pumpkin King
