    DESCRIPTION:
    Tiffany has earned a respectable position in the watch market - from partnerships with Omega, Movado, & Patek Philippe, to their own models - from the Atlas to the CT60 and the East West.
    Mechanically, they weren't ultra impressive. But it was thrilling to have Tiffany, with its deep heritage, really entering into this market.
    Now we have this model - the Tiffany & Co. Square Watch. It’s not released yet, but it will be released to celebrate Tiffany’s 180th anniversary. It’s beautiful - we’re big fans of the faux patina, cathedral hands, and yellow Gold case.
    Two downsides?
    1. The limited run. Everyone should be able to buy this watch - it's universal, gorgeous, and A TON OF PEOPLE WILL BUY IT.
    2. The price. I mean, $17,000? Really, Tiffany.

    I totally agree with you in every aspect about the pricing of this watch. But it's a beautiful piece I can't deny it.

    Very fair point of view. Would never buy this myself, but agree that it could reach its natural customer base at around 8 grands

    Couldn't agree more!! I'd love the watch for 5-6k on the second hand market. But if it was 17k retail I'd laugh and walk into Langa and get a serious heavy hitter not just some limited watch that's only limited because they want to make it "exclusive"

    Great sweater, Christian! Won't be sweater weather here for quite some time. (desert southwest). :( Cheers!

    This looks like something Bulova would have done in the 50s. Beautiful watch. I'm in agreement here. The price and limited production are both forced.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 Před 3 lety

      The clientele that buy the watch do not actually care about the things that watch collecting flippers care about.
      They buy brands and looks.

    I see their allure, cool discussion and reminds me somejwst of the very similar in some.regards to the cuervo y sobrinos havana (the vintage pre Castro watches are super cool, they're worth checking out, and like tiffany, they have revived some and do modern pieces today, though I think linked in name only to the awesome early Cuban era)

  • @robinh2923
    @robinh2923 Před 6 lety

    totally agree with all your comments! Particularly the Cartier pricing comment. Really at 17k USD, very few die hard watch collectors are going to be buying this. you're putting it really in the sheik/oligarch market at that price.

  • @sumofty
    @sumofty Před 6 lety

    I agree about the Tiffany watch price tag in general. Browsing their inventory, I LOVE their designs - they're just all a solid 2X the price that they should be.

    The problem I have with watches like this, even though its absolutely gorgeous..... you can get vintage solid gold tank watches for a fraction of this price, even if it was priced around 10k. Why get a re-release when you could get the real thing? Though a beautiful design, it doesn't strike me as a re design of a classic look.

    • @rlsjunior797
      @rlsjunior797 Před 6 lety

      Less maintenance, you know the service history, you're the one and only owner......there are reasons. Still, I'd rather have a vintage tank or a reverso for much much less.

  • @oscargustavoarcosruiz8793

    I have nothing to say but I want to be the first to do so. :D
    On the other hand my small and quadrangular Omega Genéve has the same combination of metals as your Vacheron, but in reverse.

    I think they'll sell through the 180 no problem, there are more than enough customers out there for it, and then in a year or two they'll bring out a very similar model in a non LE stainless steel version. Would be a good business move IMO

    Any thoughts on the new Cartier tanks for the 100 year anniversary, especially since you recently called out the current line up of Louis Cartiers. In my opinion they fall into a similar category like this Tiffany, really nice but overpriced. Would be nice for you to talk about it on your next Live q&a

  • @freddycz3732

      Theo and Harris yah to the Uber rich that but everything they make regardless, but they should be trying to get more people into the brand not just cater to their existing clientele

    • @bobschaaf2549
      @bobschaaf2549 Před 6 lety

      I agree. I suspect that the cost of manufacture is higher than you'd think. My guess is that it's not a watch they can make in large number. It's a square movement, fully but minimally jeweled and nicely finished, which suggests remaindered stock of an old caliber, and in limited supply. Tiffany isn't a company known for making a lot of anything. Still, you're right about the price: way out of line.

  • @westleygreenhalf2338
    @westleygreenhalf2338 Před 5 lety +2

    Cartier offers nothing of this type at $7-9k in gold with a shaped manual wind movement.

  • @prnuvsharma55

    Excellent point about graduating a consumer over their lifetime. T&Co. needs to understand the opportunity prior to sinking R&D $$$ into a beautiful but frightfully expensive watch

    Good point about the 180 piece run. It could be Tiffany just doesn't see themselves as a premier "watch" brand. It's an internal identity conundrum.

    • @BobbyDazzler888

      Maybe the price is upped because of the hours put into finishing the movement. Movement looks well detailed through that caseback

  • @tendrams
    @tendrams Před 6 lety

    Find me a (new) solid gold dress watch with movement finishing of this calibre (no pun intended) that has a street price of $7-9K. Good luck. They will sell every one of these due to the LE status, but if they produced it in quantity pricing it for a street price of 10-12K would work and be totally legit.

    • @felixdenomme7996
      @felixdenomme7996 Před 6 lety

      J S the Cartier Tank Louis large REF: W1529756 is retailing at 9k CAD. I can see Tiffany and Cartier competing, but at 17k Tiffany is trying to compete with Lange, VC, and maybe some patek calatravas and at that point they are waaaaaay out of their league

    • @tendrams
      @tendrams Před 6 lety

      Fair enough....you are right on the Tank..but only with the quartz movement and NOT the manual wind. That is certainly a reasonably priced (but quartz) exception to what I note above. If one can get past the date window on it (yuck) it even has a street price of $8K! BUT, if you want the manual wind Tank Louis (Retail price of $14K!) you VERY likely won't get it for less than $11K USD. Most any other gold watch with a top shelf mechanical movement though (even the Piaget Altiplano) has a retail price of $15K or more and a street price of 10-12K. I frankly can't imagine buying this T&CO at 17K (or most any other option in this sphere) when I can get a Lange Saxonia 37mm for LESS (about $11.5K USD)!

      The Marquis , If I knew all the costs, then subtracted the asking price, then I would know how much I'm paying for "the name "...In the end , I'm just curious, I'm not buying expensive watches.

  • @eddiek828

  • @bobschaaf2549
    @bobschaaf2549 Před 6 lety

    180? How about hands that turn only 180 degrees? Seriously, the price, as you said, is a bad joke, but Tiffany can't release an 18K watch for under 10 grand. It would dilute the brand. I think $12,000 is still too much, but that should be the price point, given the premium of the Tiffany brand.
