- Abandoned Kmart & Kmart Express Massillon, OH. I loved finally being able to see a Kmart Express up close and in person. Pretty awesome. This Kmart looked so creepy in the thick fog. Really awesome.

FINALLY getting a chance to watch this :) I grew up in Massillon (well from the age of 11), and I remember buying everything from shoes to wrapping paper at this store, even had my daughter's pictures taken at the Olan Mills studio inside, and still have one of the keychains I got from there lol :)

Hi WallieB26, I just viewed the video after the the gas station was hit with car or truck and now your video is showing what it use to look like in better times, the time I remember. As often times I been here, I never drove to in the rear of the store, this is my first time.
That beeping in the K Express is a Veeder Root, it beeps annoyingly when a gas delivery is needed, hated hearing that thing when I worked at a Circle K haha

I didn't either until I saw one in one of Nate's videos on his channel, That Nate Guy On CZcams. Since then I was determined to see one in person.
I'm from the UK and I didn't know gas stations in America ask customers to pay first then use the pump in the UK we pump first then pay I don't know witch choice is better than the other. How bad does the snow get we're you live because in the UK since last Thursday people were panic buying for no reason because of the snow. Even the bus driver's and postman didn't have the balls to drive in the snow as for me I had to walk from home into town for half an hour the snow was only up to my ankles while other countries have snow up to the knee's or waist.
Conrad Bennett in New Jersey, there are gas attendants that fill up our gas tanks because it’s a law in our state that the public can’t serve themselves just a gas attendant.

J Andrew in my state Massachusstes some gas stations have attendats who do it but most of them if not all the customers fill their cars
Amazing video. I had a kmart in my area but not a Kmart Express so cool and in terms of that alarm it was the one flashing red and orange across from the entrance door to the builiding of the K Express. Love the videos as always

Erin Bricker - Urban Historian mine in my area closed back in September 2017 just before this winter very sad the building still has the colors and everything resembling it was a Kmart and also the doors still have the kmart stickers on it

That Kmart and Kmart express is in my home town where I live. The only existing Kmart left in this area is in North Canton Ohio which is 15 miles from this Kmart. This Kmart originally had a grocery on the west end it did have Automotive on the East end. It was the best Kmart in the country in the 60's 70's and 80's. It is in the neighborhood where I was born and raised and it was originally opened in 1965. The gas station I do believe it was built and opened up.about ten years ago. It was a outstanding store in it's day. Glad you came to Massillon Ohio. No it was never a super Kmart it was a big Kmart.
Sylvester puddy tat this store is sitting in the corner of 27th Street NE (aka) Jackson Ave NE and Lincoln Way East (aka) Route 172 or the old route 30. Store is facing the south on the North side of route 172 or the old route 30.

That express station looks like it wouldn't take much to get back running. Probably drop $10k on top of the price and it could be running in 2 months
I was built in....probably 2000 or 2001. I worked there when they built it. The gas station was almost brand new. They tore it down though.

I'm glad that you are documenting these KMarts that are closing. It breaks my heart to see them close! I worked at KMart while in college. I quit one month shy of my five year pin. I worked in my home state of California and in college state of Illinois. KMart was very good to me and to most of us workers who were in college/universitiy. I was able to work in both states and was paid out of the home office in Troy, Michigan. I have fond memories of my time spent at KMart. I did many, many Blue Light Specials. I can still recite the lines...and it's been over 30 years. I still have my KMart name tag that I wore at work. Who knew, it would become a collectable!
There was the biggest Kmart I've ever seen in Hanover, PA. They turned it into a full size Home Depot AND a massive Bonton. Store closed in 2004, but there is still signage in the parking lot lol. I'll have to send you a pic.
I used to go that one when I was a toddler back in the 90's it was a Super Kmart great store still remember going in there great times
The Big Kmart in Richmond, Indiana is still open if you want to explore it. They closed the Kmart Express outside of it though and it's abandoned

I’ve lived down the street from this place for 15 years and never thought the Kmart Express was a rare thing until seeing this video. Used to shop at BigK all the time, but now its only usage is car shows on the weekends. They fill the entire parking lot. :)
Went to one of the last K-Marts left in my area. Prices are double compared to elsewhere. That is why they are going out of business.
The thing you said was the alarm is a computer that is used by the underground storage tanks. It shows how much gas is in them and when it gets to low it will alert the management and at some point will cut the pumps off completely. This provides safety for people filling up their cars so no trash and any water is not pumped into the car. I am sure the tanks are empty at this location and that is why it is flashing. I've never seen one of these K-Mart gas stations either. Thanks for the video.

I didn't know some Kmarts had gas stations. It's ashame to see another great retailer sink into oblivion. You are a great man WallieB for doing these awesome videos in spite of the nasty weather that I know you are not a fan of.
I used to work for this particular Kmart location as well as the one in Mentor Ohio... I could tell you some pretty crazy stories about some of the policies that they had at both locations.. some of the policies were just absolutely ridiculous and after I left Kmart I heard from multiple people still working at the company that they had implemented even more ridiculous rules and regulations that didn't make any sense.. I think that's why the two Kmart's I worked at failed horribly
I remember Mentor K-Mart in the 1970's. It was where Lowe's is now. The current Super K in Mentor is where the old drive in was. Over 40 years of K-Mart in Mentor, so I wouldn't say they're a failure...
Sean Spring 40 years is a long time... But I'd like to point out when k marts need management came in ( it was before I started there ) they changed so many policies.. most of the staff didn't even know about the new updated policies in place... I worked there for 3 years... And found out half of what I was told was incorrect... And no one .. not even supervisors knew about the policy changes... Also no one from corporate came to check anything ... In at least 3 years I was there.. and we had a manager who was harassing female co-workers who wrote to corporate and corporate didn't even investigate it
My buddy just watched your video. He used to live down the street where that main entrance is. His mom worked at that Kmart for years. Someone told him once that it was the biggest Kmart in the region. Sad to see it gone, but oh well. Nice vid!
I love your Kmart videos. I grew up in a small Northern California town and we had two grocery stores and one Kmart. It’s nostalgic for me. That old store is still in Placerville surprisingly
This is quite interesting. We had two Kmarts here in Lima, Ohio - one closed down almost 10 years ago and the other a little under a year ago. I NEVER knew Kmart had gas stations at some of their locations. Thanks for this awesome adventure!

There is a tank report that prints out when or if they have it set up
Doubt anyone is refilling them
Unless another company buys the gas station portion there is no likely that it will be filled

I've not seen a Kmart Express gas station as well which never knew this chain had any of these. Our former Kmart didn't have a gas station. When I see Icee I think of Kmart, when I was a kid I'd see Icee & had them for the first time at Kmart. Great memories for me.

There was a Super K-Mart and K-Mart Express here in Cambridge, Ohio. The Express closed about 2 years ago then the K-Mart right after Christmas ‘17. Rural King was supposed to take over the building but backed out
I remember Kmart Express, so old school! It's like seeing part of my childhood in a snowy graveyard. The 90's are truly dead unfortunately.

Amazing. I was a loss prevention manager for Kmart 3141-Bridgeville, Pa. years ago. Great company to work for. Also the stores are known by Group Sizes 8, 10 or whatever based on structure size and layout.

Here's a real sad Kmart story.. Here in Mississauga, Ontario we had a plaza called Sheridan Mall built in 1970 and it had a Kmart , It lasted to about 1986 ( a guess ) when the Mall was renovated and big retailer Eaton's moved . Quite a few years later , the Kmart location was renovated to make way for a Target store ( first of many in Canada ) . A construction worker was killed during the renovation at this Kmart site ! Target lasted all but 6 months in Canada, pulled up their stakes and left ! It and other locations are all abandoned ! And now I've heard the entire plaza is to be demolished soon for a housing development .

I know what that alarm is for. Its the alarm for the underground gas tanks, when it goes off the little screen on the panel will read "delivery needed" so the alarm means the tanks are empty
Kmart express were just started to be added to the Kmart stores in 2000 just before they filed for bankruptcy the first time in 2003.

This Kmart probably wouldn’t have been a Super Kmart because u can tell by the look of the building that this was an older one and it doesn’t resemble a Super K at all. I think the older Kmarts were bigger as well.

The final Kmart express was located in Ionia MI and closed in December 2017.
In southeast PA, I’ve never even heard of Kmart Express! I know Giant Food Stores tends to have some gas stations (not sure if Giant is a regional store or not) but never a Kmart. Cool find!

lena lena As far as I know... and I could be wrong... all 30+ Kmart Express gas stations are closed now. They were a thing in the Midwest with a couple locations outside of the Midwest in the Norfolk, VA area.

I never been there when it was open. In fact, I never knew about it until I went pass it, but it was closed.

Yes Back in the 1990's through 2009-2010 when I was still here in Massillon, this store was turned into a BigK store, until it closed.....

we have one remaining Kmart in Chesapeake. it has a sears outlet store next to it. this location is always busy. they are staying open for now.
I worked for Kmart in 2010. The one in Monroeville, PA and I never heard of Kmart express!
Hasn't been closed that long was in there myself in the last days. There is also a kmart on sr.62 canton just as big also had the gas station
There was a little one in my hometown. I don't think they ever put anything in once it closed. The whole mall was closing down around it also. I remember people started living in cars and RVs in the parking lot. It started to attract homeless people pretty quick once the businesses started closing.
Never had I ever seen or heard of a Kmart gas station. Methinks they were trying to keep up with Walmart's Murphy's stations and Meijer fuel plazas, and maybe grocery chains like Kroger that have their own gas stations, only to fail epically.
We had 3 Kmarts around my house in Texas. 2 Big Kmarts and 1 Super Kmart. The 1 Super Kmart had a K Express. Only the Super K’s had gas stations I thought.
Like seeing the snow in this video it is 115 degrees in Phoenix right now.
Here in Colorado I believe in the Denver area there is a huge Kmart that closed last year. It had two door ways and was only a plain old Kmart. The store looked like a super k without the branding. I think they were planing on having it be a super k but it never happened. Now we only have 2 kmarts left in the whole state luckily one is 45 min from me
Those pumps look exactly the same like the ones in the Kroger gas station I use.
I've never seen a K-Mart Express here in the Kansas City area. My mom was a pharmacist for K-Mart in the 1980's.

There is a Murphy’s gas and a Walmart convenience store here in front two Walmart’s. Kroger’s owns some gas stations.

It’s crazy to think about but we will look at those gas pumps and see the Pepsi bottles in the future and think damn look at that vintage look.

Wow, that is indeed a huge Kmart. There's one just as huge by me in Minneapolis on Lake Street that comes right off of the intersecting street for its parking lot and stuff. It's ridiculous. Especially since the company just renewed its lease for a whopping 36 years. And unlike other Kmarts, this one still looks to get a ton of business. Probably because of the lower income neighborhood its in too.
I live right by that Kmart. I'll watch for when they start demolishing and try to get you a sign if you want...
If you had gone about 20 miles west of Massillon, you would have ended up in Wooster, my hometown, where our Kmart still sits empty since closing on September 3rd, 2017.

All the Kmarts we have left are not nearly that big I'm 100% positive that's the first Kmart that I've seen that was that big

The Kmart that is closing in Cambridge, Ohio had a Kmart Express Gas station for the first good many years they was open at the location they are at. The Cambridge, Ohio location started out as a Super Kmart, but downsized to a regular size Kmart. The Cambridge, Ohio Kmart had been located just down the road on the other side of I-70, but moved to their current location back in the 1990’s l think maybe 1995.
