Old Otis Traction elevator @ Rush Rhees Library University of Rochester NY from 1930

- This elevator is in excellent condition for its age. A BEAUTIFUL example of a well preserved historic otis elevator. Originally installed in 1930 the interior button panel MIGHT have been upgraded at some point due to the fact that back in the 1930s the emergency button simply had "alarm" or "A" on the button. the "Emerg Call" came about in the early 60s i believe. however this style (small bakelite buttons) fixture has been around since the turn of the century. This elevator is of much higher quality than a modern one. Facebook: / dieselducy

Such wonderful 1930's style Elevator.
I'm so enjoying these University of Rochester videos. ;) I love this elevator (take it all the time). My mother got a serious fit of acrophobia in it and we had to get out and take the elevator next to it.
I like the way the gate automatically closes when you press a floor, DieselDucy!
I like the electric sliding gate and find buttons on both sides interesting. I also like the clicking noise it makes
Me too ❤️💙💜💖💛🖤🧡🤍🤎
I love those old lifts, so nice, i saw a video of an older manual one with a bellhop who was watching for floor numbers in the glass
WHY ARE ELEVATORS SO AMUSING!?!?!?
When my dad was a kid, he was riding an elevator when he suddenly said "Thank God it's an Otis!" :D
I just noticed that this gated elevator was completely redone with no more gate. I used the to ride it all the time to the tower to play the carillon back in 2016. Because it is no more, I am thinking about having a company called residential elevators build an exact replica of this elevator (when I get a stand alone house) when it was original with some elements of the of the modern cab, like the LED lighting with the diffuser, but soft white. The wood trim of the modern cab will be present as well as matching wood laminate flooring with the Otis logo on it, however the top portion will be like the original cab. Of course an exact replica of the original gate and the original outer doors will be at every level of the house.
I haven't watched this video in years!!! I can't believe I live 15 minutes away from these, and I never rode them until 3 weeks ago! Daniel and I rode them, they are awesome!
EPIC Elevator y'all with EPIC MOTOR And EPIC RELAY'S Y'ALL
I love thw interlock clicks!
When Mercy used to be in the city of St. Louis before they moved to their present location, they had some just like this one. When I was about 2 years old, the doors I think on the old St. John's Hospital had round windows in some of the doors on the elevator.
I wish my university library had an elevator like this!
Awesome!! :-D
This elevator really IS in nice condition! There's an older elevator from the same time, maybe earlier, and I couldn't ride it because the elevator kept getting stuck between floors and would never reach the doors. LOL
love the clacking of the floor passings!
I could be wrong but in my town there was a 1940s Otis traction and it made a clanking noise and supposedly was originally the bell dinging but the bell broke or something so the thing dinging it just clicks
That's the relay logic controller.
ELEVATOR IS WHAT I WANNA TAKE!
now THAT is an elevator!!
I only came back here 13 years later to say that they have not only modernized this but put in a whole new cab in the shaft.
Wait really? I’ve used to watch this when I was in pre k. Where is this location at? Thanks

this old otis is very good my favourite is the 2000th video because it is so long and you also did a very good job and the old otis Is old and I love old things
OMFG IT RELEVELED
Around 2018, I rode an elevator similar to this (may not be OTIS) at a hotel in a building in Rome. The outer door wasn't a sliding door, it was a normal door.
It's very amazing elevator I remember those elevator a long time ago.
Sadly modded.
I went on one of them once when I was doing research. I took the narrow stairs after that. They're inspected and in good condition but I felt claustrophobic in there.
I remember riding the Otis which I think were the main elevators. I tried to ride the Westinghouse but didn't. My great grandmother used to work at The Majestic. But now they're about to make the hotel into a condo and business building.
Love the sound of the clicking noises as the elevator goes up and down.
There's 17 floors total but this elevator only serves 12 out of the 17 floors
@@missourielevators9252 yeah but strange
I’m pretty sure this elevator has passive interlocks (Where the interlocks open when the elevator passes the floor) That may explain the clicking when the elevator passes floors
I rode this twice before it got modernized.
amazing otis elevator. runs perfectly unlike shitty, crappy stuff SOME brands put in.
realy nice elevator 5 stars
very nice, to see it working , here in antwerp they are demolishing them ,
Wow, a 15-floor library!
Welcome back 10 years later when these things are now legacy.
I know. Sadly modded ;(
Cool elevator. The oldest elevator I've rode that's still original is the 1904 Otis elevator at Oaklawn Jockey Club in Hot Springs, AR.
@@Aaravviralvideo88 huh? 🤨

Were the elevators from 2-80 Otis Signal Control? Did they have operators? Did they have pop-out buttons? Were the 80-86 elevators similar, or different?
hey, look now, you have one of those call buttons!
It really has a total of 13 stops because of the carillon.
At the bottom floor there was a keyswitch above the call button panal was that like the shut off switch for when they switch off the elevator or something
elevators are awesome
@FletchFTW4413 You got THAT right Baby!!! Where would we be without them?
What did they need to do in order to block off access these floors? (The 600's,700's and TOP) Did it have something to do with disconnecting the relays? I don't think they had keys back then to lock out certain floors? And it looks like at one time they had these floors working since they filled in the blanks.
Really nice elevator with wooden doors. I wonder, does this elevator have passive interlocks (that momentarely unlock as the elevator passes the floor) or does it lock before it starts moving like modern interlocks? This because I hear a distinct sound everytime it passes a floor and it doesn't sound like a relay clicking.
Thanks
Believe it or not, I rode an old Otis elevator that is just like this one! It is used as a service elevator at MercyOne in Sioux City, Iowa! Of course it serves less floors than this one in this video. Makes same sounds, pretty much everything about it is the same, other than the cab thought!
awesome! Sadly this has been modded.
hi DieselDucy may i suggest that you could come over to England to see a really cool Singing Lift in London at the Southbank Centre on the blue side of the building it's also completley glass and it's yellow
I've been on 1931 elevators in the Empire State Building. The main ones (B-80) were completely original when I've been, modernized now. 80-86 were original 1'st trip, modernized 2'nd time. 86-102 is still completely manual, with an operator.
That's nice can you make a video on it ☺️
@@hamzamalik7305 (1) I did (Million View Special), but I was wrong about the first 2 travels at the ESB, they were original 1966 cabs. The 1931 one was still there, now heavily modded. In their museum, the fixtures, and wall panels are on display as a mock elevator.
@@georgef551 Can you plz give your video link becz there are too many videos on your channel I couldn't find it

And this gated elevator has since been replaced by Otis with a Series M2 mod and a Snapcab...
Yep... I knew it would happen. No piece of gold can stay- Ethan Spence said this
진짜 오래됐네 ㄷㄷㄷ
ooooh old world charm, but i wouldnt play with that awesome elevator too much
at least you'll never get stuck. lol
Automatic doors? AWESOME!
The outer door is manual, only the scissor gate is automatic
those clicking noises as the elevator passes, is that the locking mechanism for the floor doors?
PLEASE COME BACK HERE
Never!
@@ohiovalleyelevatorsofflift3443 why
The top or 700-600m doesn't work but g100/500m can go with until the elevator race the second part of the video
T, e t 8e
U of R class of 84... they renamed those floors I am guessing. The highest publicly accessible floor back when was "12B." That elevator was scary, but I still used it from time to time. Stacks, level 12B was a nice, quiet place to study. I'd pick one of the old, wood bench/desks facing the quad. The building there was basically uninsulated so the under-desk radiators pumped out copious amounts of heat from the coal-burning heating plant on so many cold, windy nights. I imagine/hope a lot of that has been upgraded by now.
I have heard that the elevator was upgraded :(
@@DieselDucy it was modernized by otis. If i can find a link for the video I’ll reply with it.
@@DieselDucy czcams.com/video/r8e3I0Ipos8/video.html
This is a COOL "mod" (i.e. instead of modernizing this, they put a new elevator next to it or modded that one)
Must be good motor, very fast.
Very high quality
did you ever check out the 'hidden' elevator in Meliora?
I wish there were Otis’s like that in my country the oldest is probably in a hospital the best we have are UK series 1s that are branded as Europa 2000
This thing has been modded :(
The buttons are original, the emergency bell button was probably just retrofitted onto the original panel.
looks like then at the Verdun hospital where my father works at
what happens when the elevater breakdown?
The oldest elevator I rode was an unknown 1960s or 70s freight elevator.
Awesome
The lift have fast inner doors.Cool a 1940 otis
it's actually from 1930
Can you film lift from Empire State Building?
how many floors? 12?
old fashion lift
Hi from 2020
It has 17 floors.
I Went To Ride On One Of These It Went Up To This Like Really Creepy Floor And Didnt Go Down I Ended Up Taking The Stairs
what's with the hundred-numbered floors?
I was wondering what the clicking was at every floor but I forgot this runs on machanical switches
sadly modded now.
Imagine if the gates were changed to the manual door on the outside and are automatic. The doors will go the same speed as the gates and open the same time. Would seem more realistic. But thats just me.
Your friend Zack has the same name as me
Awesome!
I saw how the inside door opened and closed elecrically okay Andrew
Yeah, it's a clever gate!

interesting but scary.
Update: The doors have since been painted blue
And it has since passed away.

Þere should be a special keycard to accses LiftTuber-specific floors.
Totally
I even bet when they modded this to be like the automatic one they put it on the same controller
Maybe
what does M stand for
I would guess "mezzanine".
That elevator is old from the 1930's
Did the 2nd one on the right get modernized
Both now
@@DieselDucy nooo
The one on the right was built in the 1950’s (about 20 years after the original one, which was modernized in 2020 or 2021 I believe) with the machine room on the dome (600M) level and I think it was always automatic and the call button and main panel I think was replaced to make it ADA compliant. Nobody really goes on the dome level, since it is even more restricted than the catwalk floors above it. Anyone associated with the Carillon is allowed of every level about the stacks (G100-500M), except for 600 and 600M.
This elevator has been modded
I don’t see books I saw one
In the left
0:08 if subtitles saying "odus"
Whoops
is 600, 600m, 700, 700m, and top a real floor?
+ElevCraft Yes, they are all real. They need a key for access. The University opens them to the public twice a year---once during Halloween and once during graduation. The top floor leads to an observation deck at the top of the library, which has a 360 degree view of the city.

i don't like the hand operated one because im scared it will go when the door is open when someone calls it
It can move only when all the outer doors and the gate closed enough
Trevor peck most of these elevators won't move with the door open
