The Key to a DARK GREEN Lawn /// Let's Talk Micronutrients

  • There are obviously MANY KEY steps that go into a green lawn but today's focus is on micronutrients and the importance of those nutrients to help with a darker green and the overall health of the turf. I neglected the micronutrient side of things for a while but after understanding the importance, I am on a rotation of foliar spraying to add these key pieces to my overall lawn program. Especially if your pH is high or a soil test indicates a deficiency, an application of micros can help.

Hey Ryan, I've been watching your channel for a few weeks. I just realized, you love to mow your lawn. Most people go fishing, surfing, golfing, etc. My relationship with the lawn is more like a wrestling match. You lose more often than you win. You give me hope. Thanks for all your hard work!

I've been using Micros and Sea Kelp this season. First time ever since I've owned my home (10 years). I must say, they do make a difference. My lawn is more tolerant to heat. I live in Texas and we are getting up around 100 degree days. Its also fuller and greener than in past seasons. I do a foliar Micro/Sea Kelp combo the first of the month with a sprayer. Then I do a Humic/Sea Kelp/Micro application from the Hose End mid month. Seems to be working. Great to try new things and actually see results. Its actually similar to your system but only 2 applications monthly. As always, thanks for the great content.

Micronutrients and Macronutrients is key for a healthy lawn, Color will always depend upon your grass type and the cultivar. Every grass is different even different cultivars for the same grass type. So before you try to get a certain color make sure grass is suppose to look like that. Some grasses dont get a dark green

You have a very beautiful lawn, and I enjoyed and appreciated the time it took to do your video. Your work area turned out great too! It was inspirational. Next up: You can use some appearance enhancing shrubbery and foundation plantings around the house and fencing. Otherwise without some landscaping it has a stark appearance . You could best show off your great lawn by having some color and visual interest (landscape architecture), e.g., flowers, variegated leaf shrubs, evergreen and flowering trees around to contrast with it. ( I know...it costs money!) So shape and plant your beds little by little in sections over time. Thank you so much for your grass advice. That's exactly what I wound up here for. The spots where my dog pees are a perfect dark green, so I figured it's something to do with nitrogen.

You succeeded in greening up with a higher pH? How much did you have to apply?
I also have a high pH and haven't gotten the green from iron like my father in laws lawn gets.

Rj Miller Aerate and put down a ton of organic compost this fall. Compost will naturally allow for better nutrient absorption over time. It’s a process to get things right.

Can these products be mixed in a backpack sprayer versus spraying separately (ie summer/fall fertilizer 3-18-18 and lawn energizer Micronutrient Booster from essentials bundle box)..thanks!

does that mower mulch? It seems to throw the clippings forward, where you can go over them again and again. Not sure if that clogs up the works.

I’ve put down iron with a hose end sprayer. It isn’t nearly as dark as what I achieve with a backpack sprayer. Too much water washes the iron off the blades of grass defeating the purpose of chelated iron.

Hi Ryan. Hope you are well. I'm so glad I checked your channel this morning as last night I put some iron sulphate down on the lawn, and was pondering as to when I need to water the lawn next, as I've never been clear on how long to leave the iron on. So brilliant timing, and I've just come back in from watering it in now. Hopefully I got my quantities right last night and will have a lush green lawn in a few days time! How often do you like to apply a little iron sulphate to bring the colour up? Cheers, Simon

Are micro/macro nutrients and when to apply them talked about in your lawn care book? Do you give product recommendations (lawn care solutions, etc) in your book? Thanks
