  • We bring some friends from the US to a Finnish baseball game in Jyvaskyla. Finnish Baseball is NOT like American baseball. We were aware of this going in, but still didn't look up the rules beforehand. So, we attempt to figure out what's going on here. I apologize for our ignorance. It's quite an interesting sport, and I want to learn, and perhaps play, this local pastime.

    The colored "turkey" is a signal held by the coach. The team has certain signals for different purposes. For example, they might've one when, for example, red is showing, then you run to the next base, or another one would be that when some other color is showing only the "head" (the runner gotten farest on the field) is running to the next base. They are usually more complex than just a colour but easier this way. No-one except the team knows the signal, but the opposing team might have a designated person for trying to make out the opponent's signal.

    Pesapallo is much faster than baseball, I`m not saying its better than the American versión ,but it`s a much better option than Softball and 10 times better than slowpich softball, because in slowpich softball all they do is try to hit homeruns with no other strategy in the game..Pesapallo is a much more intelligent game were the batter have to master the control and direction of the ball to try and fool the outfielders. making them move there ass during the game! with way more tactics, and this is coming from an ex cricket Fastpich softball and baseball player from Australia,,Pesapallo does exist in Australia , but in a small level,..but at least we have it!

    Basic difference is that finnish baseball has much faster tempo and a lot more strategic element in it. It's much easier to hit the ball, but there are more restrictions for where you can hit (If the ball hits ground inside playing field and then goes out..it's fair hit). So it's not just about swinging as hard as you can and hoping that the ball would go far. Hitter has to think about WHERE he wants that ball to go and HOW. Pitcher is still by far the most important player since he can make it a lot harder to get the desired hit. He can change tempo, he can have unpredictable height in his pitches and he can target unfavorable part of that pitching plate. Then he can use foul pitch (target outside the plate or have too short pitch) to confuse hitters and runners.
    Top level games are rather difficult to follow for beginners..but rather satisfying when you get the hang of this game. It's relatively easy game to play for beginners..since on that level there's very little strategy involved.

    • @Steve-eq8iz
      @Steve-eq8iz Před 6 lety +1

      I don't see the superior strategic element. You seem to be assuming that baseball players aren't trying to hit the ball in a certain way.

    • @timomastosalo
      @timomastosalo Před 6 lety +5

      Steve H It's more like th tactical happens more often, because the runners are active more often. Because there's less duel between the pitcher and the batter, and more action between bases. Also, the faster tempo makes it sometimes demanding to react quickly play after play, especially when illegal hits happen, because then the runners have to return to the base they left during that play. The very next play might demand them to run fast immediately they touch the base where they returned.
      The tactics and mind reading attempts happen in the messages the teams send to their team mates, especially when batting. The team leader gives messages to the runners with a 6(?) coloured fan, the 'turkey'. Sometimes the fielding team learns quickly what the colours mean, and plan B has to be implemented.

    • @Steve-eq8iz
      @Steve-eq8iz Před 6 lety +1

      In that case softball's a much much much more """tactical""" sport than baseball lol
      Doubly so for slow pitch softball. And don't get me started on kickball.

    • @timomastosalo
      @timomastosalo Před 6 lety +7

      Steve H - Sorry, you sound too offensive to be really interested in this. Seems like you walk the road of the typical haters, just judging it inferior simply because of the vertical pass, and because there's a backline too. So no automatic homerun, if you hit a long monster. Alas, no use of prejudging it before getting to know it. And there needs not be a rivalry 'which is better, period'. It's possible to like both of them - they are same family, after all. I like to watch the pitches and homeruns in the American Baseball - spectacular.
      You repeat the same misinterpretations people got answered years ago in this video - Angel Smith explained 3 years ago the difference between this game and Softball, or slow pitch, or how many versions there are of Baseball. He's an Australian who's played all these games, so you'd benefit of listening to him.
      Slowpitch softball is still closer to Baseball than this game: You can aim for the long monster hit. Finnish baseball has stripped the batter of the weapon of a long hit, and the pitcher of the incoming fast pitch. THAT makes the game more challenging - no easy points, no easy pitching outs. Hence, more tactical game is needed. Not saying Baseball doesn't have it, this sport just needs it more, for not having the OP guns in pitching and batting.
      The batter can make as long hits as he likes - just he has to get the ball to touch the ground inside the field first. And at the top level the fielders have sometimes a very tight stranglehold of the field. Some fakes and pinpoint accuracy needed to surpass them.
      It's mostly solved in the running game, where you need to react fast AND smart. Like under fire in the military field. The zig-zagging running route simulates that too. The out has two stages: 'wounded' and 'dead'. A wound comes if the batters hit is caught mid air, if he makes it t the base, he's not out, just not allowed to continue as a runner. This can be avoided by getting back to the base you left, before that catch is made. Which is not always an option, your team mate might be coming there.
      Just love Baseball, but don't let that make you underestimate this game. Learn more about it - before that your comments reveal how little you know about it. Best if you try it out, there are some teams in America. And any Finn Hall will find someone to show the ropes. Finns are mostly in NY, LA, Florida cities, Great Lakes (Northern Minnesota & Michigan peninsula by the Lakes).

    If one catches the ball without the ball hitting ground, that is not automaticly out. If the batter manages to take first base before the ball get's there then the batter get's "Haava". Haava = Batter leaves field but no out. If a runner is out of base during the same then the same happens to them and they need to get to next base before the ball gets there. I enjoy American baseball more than the one we have here in Finland. Thought I have never played the American version but it's more enjoyable to watch at least.

    • @Krispyy431
      @Krispyy431 Před 9 lety +2

      It's the same rule that applies for all the bases. If it's a catch one can be outed from the first base too IF the ball gets there before the runner.

      Game Finnishers The point was that you can be outed from first base too. In your original comment you said there's no out, so I just clarified it. If a player manages to deliver the ball to the first base before the batter, it's out no matter wheter it was a catch or not. The only situations where there's no out even if the ball is on the baseplayer before the runner are blocking (i.e. a defender blocks the path of the runner when the defender is NOT trying to catch the ball) or on "free-run" (two missed pitches if there's a runner on the field already, one missed pitch if there's not runners on the field. The free-run comes automatically to the active head of the runners, meaning the active runner gone the farthest on the field. On some occasions a referee can judge a free-run for all the runners on the field, but it's very rare.) Trust me, I've been a referee for 6 years, and still counting, myself.

    From an American point of view I’m very intrigued. So from what I gathered a Finnish person visited America and caught a baseball game and adapted it to what I’m seeing. Saw another video of an outfielder chasing a ball into a river. So I guess the ball stays in play even if it ends up in the drink

    • @SportSoulLife
      @SportSoulLife Před 3 lety +5

      Yes, as long as the balls first bounce is within the field its a good ball and the opposing team has to go running after it. If it bounces over a fence into the woods, too bad, youre going around the fence and search for it. Its not a home run automatically.
      You can see how this came from "house rules amateur baseball", you cant just leave your only ball there and its more fun to have the keep going, adds more exitement to a "home run" .

    Foul ball on third strike = batter's out, no zone for that
    When there are no runners, first pitch off the plate warrants a base. When there are runners, two pitches off the plate for the same batter advance the front runner one base. The rest of the team yell out information to the runners, such as if there is a foul pitch for the pitcher to spare as a tactical move (it takes two to advance the runner, remember) and if the pitcher's gonna throw the ball out (he has to give the ball to the field after every faked pitch).
    If a runner is not at his original base when the ball is caught straight from the air, he's "wounded" and has to advance to the next base. If he gets there safe, he's just removed from play but not out. The term "wounded" is a remnant from the early years (the game was developed for the post civil war white guards as physical exercise and out used to be called "dead").
    Between batters the ball has to visit any other base but home.

    This is considerably more entertaining than 21st century American professional baseball. Players actually have to run all the bases rather than jog after hitting it over the fence, and almost every batter has to be put out at a base rather than have a game with 20-25 strikeouts between the two teams.
