  • Any Slytherin will tell you ambition is an admirable quality. But like Mrs Weasley fighting Bellatrix Lestrange, ambition sometimes goes too far, as in the case with these ambitious videogames that overpromised, under-delivered, and ended in disappointment. My vote for this category is Spore. From the very first concept video, of this velociraptor-type beast stalking around a dark world, I was hooked. As the months and years wore on, the videos got more cutesy, but I didn't care. I pre-ordered at the first opportunity... and I think that's probably the most disillusioned I've ever been with a game.
The stages were so simple that each one was only fun for about five minutes, and the whole game could be finished in a little over an hour. I had visions of walking around as a lone creature, seeing stars in the nigh sky. Naming those stars, and then visiting them when I got to the Space stage.
Erm... ja. That didn't happen. Neither did religion, economy, or any other mark of a complex, developed society.
    I'm still sore. :-P

It was a great game, but still seriously under delivered. The issue with THAT Fable isn't that it was a bad game, it was that the marketing was very misleading. Something that Peter went on to do over and over again. So the criticism is less about the game and more about how even though the end product was good we were still essentially sold a lie.
Now Fable 3 and The Journey... well lets just say my opinion is that the franchise had a serious issue with regression rather than progression with each of the entries. From great, to good, to horrifically awful, to I can't say because 3 literally made me lose all interest in the series because of how bad it was but I feel justified in assuming Journey was bad since it used the unbelievably crappy Kinect which didn't work right.

I'm so glad I went into the Fable series, (Fable: The Lost Chapters, PC) at thirteen, with no preconceptions or expectations beyond the box. I loved the first one, still in many ways my favorite RPG. The second one disappointed me with it's simplified magic system and somewhat less deep plot, though was otherwise just as good. The third simplified the magic system even further, though I feel I should note, in both cases there is a good in-universe explanation (left unsaid in-game) for this, and required multiplayer for full completion, a downside for any primarily single-player game IMO, but brought back a more engaging plot than two, if more railroaded than I felt the previous two were, largely due to feeling a lack of anything real to do outside of the main plot. The characters remained, aside from main characters, fairly shallow across the series, though again I think one and three fleshed out secondary characters better, and had a larger cast of them. A great series, ruined in the eyes of many by unfulfilled promises.

My only gripe with Fable: TLC was replacing Jack of Blades voice actor, which I hated, it went from a nuanced creepy voice in Fable 1 to a bad Batman impression in TLC. Still loved the game though, especially the 3 Heroes Questline. Briar Rose and Thunder are both douches, lol. Fable 2 was a lot of fun but yeah, they did simplify the magic for sure. Did you ever get the Diachi? Arguably one of if not the best weapon in the game, so much fun to use. As for Fable 3, the voice cast was really good, Reaver was overused, the weapons adapting to how you use them was cool, as was spell weaving. But overall the game was a big disappointment imo, it felt like a downgrade from Fable 2 in most ways and getting rid of the expression wheel was a stupid choice. I can go back to Fable 1 and 2 any time and have a blast, as for Fable 3, I can barely make it 2 hours into it before I give up and play a better game instead.

He also sort of IS the good cop among the pantheon, he's the one who reminds the others that humans are their responsibility to protect, rather than extras/redshirts/props in the epic conflict the aesir and jotunns are engaged in (and he's still pretty casual about bringing his soldiers into the parts of fights they aren't capable of handling). This is the first time I see Tresspasser mentioned on CZcams! I have such a weird memory of this game my dad played. I was 6 and shamefully admit that I was too scared to get past the tutorial level. o.o My dad never finished it either - he says he got stuck on a level/area where a T-Rex (unkillable I think) chased you the whole time and Raptors kept jumping out of bushes, that you had to shoot - but for that you had to stop to pick up guns and the T-Rex would catch up to you.
Still, I'm impressed to learn that it was the first game to have open world, ragdoll physics and AI-based behavior. O.O I gotta find me a Windows95-version and a copy of this XD

Did anyone else check the time when Mike said Andy talked about RDR2 every 15 minutes and expect it to be the end gag? Curse you and your backflips, Jane!

I believe the video needed to be another 20 seconds longer before another "RDR2" shout was to be made... (that's how far I went into checking!)

Plenty of interesting ideas, terrible execution. For instance, the deep, complex upgrade/customisation system is stapled onto a terrible combat system, which leads to a lot of unfair feeling deaths, when Baldur treats your inputs as vague suggestions at best, and that's not mentioning the INCREDIBLY annoying unskippable Valkyrie coming to retrieve your body sequence which is nice to watch maybe 2 or 3 times, and then blights the rest of the game by breaking all flow. You also come to realise that the devs used enemy spam as a substitute for competent level and enemy design way too quickly. There's the makings of a good game in there somewhere, but it's buried under way too many poor design decisions, and the Epic lawsuit

How about EYE: Divine Cybermancy, the incredibly opaque game where psychic alien monsters that manifested people's fears destabilized a nice healthy cyberpunk dystopia and led to your amnesiac avatar becoming the centerpiece of a shadow war? To this day I still have no idea what the plot was about, although I do remember having to walk across a vast military complex to activate research topics that would progress in real time while I went on missions. Also, you definitely needed at least two more hands to be able to activate all the hotkeys for your cybernetics and psionics while you were in combat.

Fun list and never heard of two of these. Least I will give credit to No Man's Sky Development team for working on it and getting it recently far far closer to their own vision of what the game should of been at launch.

I really liked Too Human. I loved the story it was great. It needed some gameplay tweaks, but it had a lot more promise then a lot of people thought so. I bought it new, and them again used when the GameStop I was working at, at the time, received a used copy.

Fable 2 starts with your character as a kid and then does a time skip. I always wished they'd poked fun at themselves by having a quest in the first part where you plant an acorn and then you see the tree during the second part.
