I can’t believe Celtics made so many good decisions with their tradings. Not to forget Allen-Garnett trade. They literally robbed Minesota and Seatle, then they traded 37 year old pierce and garnett to nets and robbed them. I guess the lesson is when Celtics call you for a trade don’t open, play dead or organize your fake funeral or something. I also can’t believe how Sixers keep failing in this trading bussiness.

Like you mentioned at the start, there were a lot of times when the top pick was shopped around but no one bit, which may be why most of these trades were significant. If someone traded for the pick that turned out to be Anthony Bennett or Andrea Bargnani, not much would have been offered (which is why the pick didn't get traded) and it would have ended up being insignificant since neither player became a franchise cornerstone. What is particularly noteworthy is how little was given up for Brad Daugherty. He wasn't highly regarded at the time but did go on to have a couple of all star seasons in a borderline HOF career.

Woah - you forget Dennis Johnson when mentioning players that Larry needed in order to win. Getting DJ was a game changer for them as he had already led the Sonics to a ring in the '78-'79 season before he went to Boston after the 83 season and they won a chip as soon as he got there and then again in '86 - people always forget that while focusing on McHale and Parish. I know they won one in '81 - but I doubt they win 2 more without DJ as the floor general.

That 1980's Celtics trade was one of the most lopsided trades ever, even with Joe Barry Carroll being received by the Warriors. Like, you trade for an all star, and lose two players named in the 50 greatest players list. Not only that, this was quite nessesary for the Celtics, as they would lose Dave Cowens at center. Robert Parish was also just perfect for this as well, with his rainbow jumpshot, good defensive abilities and great rebounding, he made a very complementary player to Bird/McHale.

What about 1978? Indiana held the 1st pick, but local talent *Larry Bird* refused to declare, so they traded down with Portland (who selected Klay’s dad). Unfortunately, the Celtics found a loophole in draft rules and selected Larry anyway without him needing to declare.

The CWebb trade would have been good for the Warriors if he and Nelson got along. That year was very light on big men(something the Warriors were desperate for). They were stacked in the back court. Tim Hardaway, Spreewell, and Mullin. Penny wasn't needed there, CWebb was. Despite injuries to Hardaway and Mullin, the Warriors still had a 50-32 season, finishing 6th and made the play-offs. Something they hadn't done for years, and wouldn't do again for years afterwards.
