    It’s hard to be a general manager in the NBA. You’re relying on future projections and player development when you’re making critical decisions, and sometimes those projections don’t pan out favorably. Drafting and trading players often makes some GMs look incredibly smart, and others not so much. Here are ten of the worst, mind-boggling and lopsided trades in NBA history

      @ktbeatty Před rokem +2

      That is always completely misrepresented. With Shaq incoming, and West coveting Kobe, he set about finding the highest pick he could get for Vlade Divac, who was a very good center in the NBA (and came back to haunt the Lakers as a huge part of that great Kings team). The best he could get was Charlotte, and it wasn't even a trade for the 13th pick yet. It was contingent entirely on Kobe being available to pick for the Lakers when it was their turn. If not, no trade, the Hornets use the pick for themselves. They were not highly interested in Kobe pre-draft, and would not have picked him if he was still around at 13, and Lakers hadn't come calling.

    The Blazers didn't keep Moses because they had Bill Walton at the time, so it was understandable. The insane part was that the Braves didn't even hold on to Moses. After only 2 games with the team, he was shipped to the Rockets for a couple of first round picks. It was in Houston that his career really took off.

    • @Tyrunner0097

      The Blazers admitted that they made the mistake of trading Moses instead of Walton. Even though they won in the short term with Walton, it ended up leading them to draft Bowie instead of MJ. If the Blazers had kept Moses Malone, they probably wouldn't have been pressured to draft Bowie later.

      Portland was always bad with centers. #1 overall 2 yrs before Walton they took a center. Then after Walton sat out a year they took mychal thompson #1 overall. He was garbage then they lost the coin flip to draft Hakeem. Drafted Bowie. Then Steve Johnson. Then Duckworth. Drafted Greg Oden. Traded for Nurkic. Don't draft anymore centers. Out of all those centers Duckworth & his one handed jumper was the most consistent

    There are honestly a LOT worse trades in NBA history than the Kareem trade. Short of trading him for ANOTHER Kareem, "experts" were going to call this a one-sided trade. This trade was actually a pretty good one for the Bucks. Bridgeman became one of the best 6th Man in the league, and Winters averaged 19 per game his first 4 years with the Bucks and was a 2x All-Star. They kept the team afloat through the lean years of the late 70s until the Bucks drafted Sidney Moncrief and Marques Johnson and began the "Nelly Ball" era of the 80s.

    My personal worst trade is Bobby Jones for George McGinnis (Denver traded Jones to Philly for McGinnis). Denver traded away the best defensive player at the time to the team with the best offensive player (Dr. J) for a so-so forward in McGinnis (yeah, I know he was considered better but he didn't show it in Denver). I knew one of the owners of the Nuggets at that time, family friend, and told him they made a HUGE mistake in trading away Bobby Jones. The Nuggets the first year with McGinnis had a barely winning season, and Jones went on with the Sixers winning an NBA title with Dr. J & Moses Malone a couple of years later.

    The biggest mistake made by any NBA team was in 1984 draft when the Portland trailblazers had the 2nd pick to get Michael Jordan, but they passed him to pick center Sam Bowie instead which later turned to be a bust.
    The Chicago Bulls picked M. Jordan after Portland showed no interest in him
    The first draft that year went to Houston Rockets who picked Hakeem Olajuwon..

    The Kobe Bryant trade was actually a great trade, Charlotte drafted him knowing that he would never play for them but that they could get a good player for him, he alluded to the fact that he only wanted to play for the Lakers maybe the Sixers, but Charlotte was gutsy enough to hold Bryant's rights hostage to make sure the Lakers didn't just get a free pass to Kobe, of course Kobe was way better than Vlade Divac. Also technically you can't consider Kobe Bryant a lifelong Laker if he was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets.

    Barkley was IMO the second-best PF in the league - behind Kevin McHale - but the point COULD be argued as Kevin was starting to slow down a bit.

    Red engineered the trade for the draft rights to Russell before the draft, there was NO "Russell wasn't intended to play with the Celtics".
    However, it did COST - Red traded away a multi-time established All Star (Ed Macauley) and 2 future Hall of Fame members (Ed and Cliff Hagan) AND some off-court stuff to get Russell, and was very happy with the results.
    It wasn't a total loss for the Hawks though - they DID beat the Russell-led Celtics behind Bob Pettit, Macauley, and Hagan in the 1958 Finals - the ONLY time that Russell lost a championship series (and Alex Hannum as coach was also the only man to ever defeat the Russell-era Celtics TWICE in the playoffs, once with Atlanta and once with the WIlt-led 76ers).
