  • Every day in nyc an unrelenting wave of shoplifting sweeps over businesses throughout town. A recent report says nyc's shop owners feel abandoned by their government. Is that justified, or are reports of crime in NYC overblown?

In a lot of ways it's not even the judges' fault. For instance, when setting bail or deciding to hold someone without bail they're not ALLOWED to take that person's past arrest record into consideration. Have 15 trials pending for theft? Doesn't matter, they have to let them out on the promise to show up for trial or get charged themselves for violating the thief's rights.

former retail security exec here: The reason retail crime statistics dont show the explosion of crime is because like you noted, retail insurance will try to deny claims under a certain amount, and companies know that if you claim too often they will raise your premiums or cancel you altogether. Most claims also require a police report of some kind...so they have to spend hours and hours filing paperwork which may not be paid off. Its easier to write off the loss at the end of the year. In addition, ppl who actually have money, hate waiting for locked items and it signifies that its a bad area to shop! If the city wont help, there is a point where its no longer viable and the store has to close down. Prepare for the mass flight of businesses. If youre an asylum applicant, this should be an instant rejection and deportation.

Anyway he got so fed up with kids stealing sodas and candy he actually urinated in a few Pepsi Bottles and some other candies , let them steal them for a week and then asked a few of the kids if they wanted to see a funny video, he showed them a video of a " bodega worker" urinating on and in the items and the background looked surprisingly close to the store they were in. He said he never saw the kids again and business suffered for a moment because some school kids would go there anymore. HOWEVER now that there were no more hooligans and loud kids around , he attracted a better cliental and profits are better than before ( not alot but better ).

Simple solution just changing the laws:
Allow self defense in your store, by any means necesary.
This right can be given to the store owners and their employees while inside the store.
If someone is seen commiting a crime, you can do anything to stop them, without the law filing a case against you.
You'll be surprised how quickly this problem would go away once they start experiencing CONSEQUENCES
wont even have to improve the police(although they should)

@@BlackamusJones I'm not living in the US, but another western country, which is still capialistic, but with more socialist elements (for better and for worse... nowadays primarily worse, even though I think the basic concept in a dialed down fashion wouldn't be bad at all). Obviously the US isn't socialist, but many politicians, activists and parts of the media seem to have a (partially) socialist mindsets, where they pick the worst, most idiological and emotionally driven elements from socialism and advocate for it, as well as implement it, with effects like the ones seen in the video.
Besides that one of the core problems of the US is the society, which is completely fucked and suffers great from the weakening national identity and the increasing devide. I'm one of the (most likely) few 2nd amendment supporters in my country, because I think it serves a great purpose, but the reason why it's not working in the US without paying a huge price in human lives (which at this point wouldn't even change with stricter laws with all the illegal guns circulating and the unlikelyhood of criminals giving up their firearms) is not the firearms itselfs or the laws, it's the society. It's missing a unified national identity, a shared culture and a clear moral compass.
There are too many people who think they have the right to harm society for their own gains or they don't even understand that they're harming society as a total, while at the same time often blaming everybody else, unable to take responsibility.

I'll never forget back in '09 I was recovering from using pain pills, and was broke(as was the norm at the time), and was in a small convenience store and had the biggest urge to steal a bag a beef jerky to eat. I must've looked at that bag for 3 mins before walking away, deciding it wasn't worth it. The store owner stops me as I'm walking out, and asked if I was hungry and mentioned he saw me looking at the jerky like I was starving(I was). He tells me he thought I was gonna take a bag, and was surprised to see i didn't and he offered me a bag for free. That was 15 years ago, a $5 bag of jerky and it meant so much that someone noticed I was struggling and was willing to help. Let me fill water cups up with soda, as his store was at an intersection where I'd have to get off the bus to catch another one

The staff can't stop the theft because that would be assault, they don't call the police because by the time they arrive, the thieves are long gone. So the store just accepts it, and the cost is passed on to the consumer.

In Latin America and many developing nations they have a very good solution for this:
There are armed guards at the entrance to every store… Often a pair of guards and often the guards are armed with automatic weapons… In Belize we saw a store where the guards weren’t carrying guns… They each had a machete instead… and they looked very sharp! The idea of having your arm or hand cut off on the spot for shoplifting is quite a deterrent. I live in a large city in a developing nation in SE Asia and here nearly every shopping mall has a pair or more armed guards at the entrance AND when entering every customer must pass through a metal detector and often a bag scanner like at airports… Additionally there is often a crew of guards at the parking lot entrance and the taxi drop-off entrance that will run a mirror under your car and open the trunk to look for prohibited devices… It works!
