Hi Tony, I had a lot of problems with it when I first started using the LOH and I use the 4 volume set as well. However, as time went on, I found it gets easier. However, even then I would find out I still wasn't doing everything correctly. There are a lot of books out there that can help, but the best one I found, and I don't care for the title of it, is "THE DIVINE OFFICE FOR DODOS". This book pretty much takes you by the hand (which I needed) and walks you through each office. It also shows how to handle "Commemorations" as well as the "Memorials" and "Feast days". I must say it should be on everyone's shelf. I'm not being paid to advertise this or receive any compensation for recommending it either. God bless you brother, and keep praying the Divine Office.

@@kevinarbolado207 Hi Kevin, its called "Christian Prayer: The Liturgy of the Hours" its the one volume "condensed" version of the four volume. And you can probably find it at the sellers website or any other bookseller that sells Catholic books. It has some nice features like the music notation I just mentioned, something the 4-volume in the video doesn't have. However, If you really want the full version you have to go for the 4 volume psalter. There's just too many feast days with particular readings that are missing from the office of readings..
. I would say also that the one volume version is also a bit more page-flippy than the 4 volume version, but that mostly depends on the season of the year. Its very similar in layout to the version in this video. Hope that helps you.

Once you've prayed the liturgy of the hours for a few years you don't really need anything more (in addition to the breviary) than a calendar for the ecclesiastical year. I'd recommend one if your parish hands one away at Christmas, or if there's a reference for your diocesan website. This is to handle those times where feast day's may be transferred like Ascension Thursday. Anyway, the Breviary is by no means an exclusive prayer for clergy or religious.
The Guide always has a reference for the shorthand abbreviations it uses.
If you find it hard to keep the hours simply cut back to one or two of them for that day. Morning prayer and Evening prayer are the most important prayers of the Breviary.

Of course, the church encourages you to pray more according to your state in life. State in life EX] If you are a parent and praying 4 offices interferes with the upbringing of your kids, making them second to praying the office, then you should most likely drop at least 1 office or perhaps just rearrange your schedule.

These are certainly the ones I try to follow using a Psalm, Kyrie, Pater noster, as I don't need to carry a book around with me (difficult if working in the garden). Also the same Psalms are used regularly, for example terce Tues to Sat the Psalms are 119, 120, 121. I think I will stick with my Laudate app on my phone...all the prayers are in one place and updated each day.

      Try Universalis, Laudate, or iBreviary.

It gets easier with time, apps are OK but nothing can replace a book. Books don't need to be charged.

There is. I say a Psalm, Gloria Patria ........, Kyrie ............, Pater noster. Checked with Father Prior and he said this was fine, the effort is what counts not necessarily spending 15 minutes reading aloud.

@@aahlstrom93 Laudate is great and all but I feel a need to sing the hymns and psalms, but I can't find the melodies for the chants.

clear as mud. Finding where and what to pray should be a valid act of penance. Sigh.

Just download the Divine Office app if you have a smart phone or tablet. Makes the job 1000x easier.

Too many unnecessary things you mentioned. Just get straight to the structure as you would pray it literally.

If you are too impatient to learn something so simple and so beautiful, stick to something just as beautiful but takes less effort like the Holy Rosary. It was actually used by those who were illiterate and couldn't pray the Office so it should be perfect for you.

I prayed the on the wrong hour and now the devil says I'm going to hell forever. be careful that you only pray during the correct hours!

You are not going to hell forever! Why would you even entertain such thoughts? Do not listen to the voice of demons. They want your destruction! If you profess Jesus as your Savior and trust in His divine mercy and choose Him, then there is no hell for you. It doesn't matter if you pray the wrong office at the wrong time, God sees the intention of your heart to worship Him and loves you for that! God is not so rigid that he commands precision in our efforts and prayers! Keep at it~ God Bless you!

I think the commentor had a point but he shouldn't joke about it. Praying to God and worshipping him shouldn't be complicated or to use prayers made up of collective events that leaders make up or add through the years. That's all Earthly Tradition! They're human doings.
Mark 7: 8 - 9 says that Jesus tells us that The Commandments of God are more important than our human Traditions.
Edit: I was raised by very devout Catholic family (both side) I went to Catholic Boarding School ( 5 yrs ) went to Church every Sunday until I was 20 I came to the States and noticed some things (rules) are different. I started missing Church then when I reached my late 30s I started reading here and there researching about our Church Traditions why we do this and that where did it come from who wrote it, etc. for example our Sabbath changed from Sat to Sun who changed it, then I got upset hearing family members and Church members seem to always put Mary above God in everything they say there has to be Mary's blessings! And then about the dead and the saints that they're also involved in our prayers or in our Church activity (traditions). All these little things that our human leaders come up with.
Anyway, I'm in my early 40s now and few yrs back before I turned 40 I got tired feeling lost so after all my readings I decided that all I want to do now is concentrate on God alone and his words (Bible). The Bible itself and the people who believe in it and Jesus is God's Church.
