English is not my primary language but I will try to play this video over and over again so as to understand it well and I will ask the Hioly Spirit to enlighten and guide me and help me learn the Divine Office prayers!
Thank God for sending you to share this ,before its too late,I Have to dedicate my all remaining years of my life for the Glory of God by saying this.Thank you u r an angels.
Very timely, I just bought a copy of Christian Prayer. God willing, I will be able to secure the complete 4 volume Liturgy of the Hours.
Hi Jun Dagami! My favorite is the 4 volume set as well. You really don't need to buy all 4 volumes at once, you can purchase one volume at a time as needed. Have a great day brother -- Peace!
Just found Bishop Robert Barron "Liturgy of the Hours" monthly subscription. I wonder why someone has not done this before. This is a big help to the lay people.
I Feel so happy, calm and rested when I pray the Liturgy of the Hour , even when I'm Alone. I try to wake up at 4:00 A.M
This is unbelievably helpful!! Thank you SO much! I have been so lost in praying my Breviary, and now I am finally feeling like I understand! THANK YOU!!
Love the daily email that you guys send me that makes this very easy!!!
Thank you and God bless 🌹🌹
Thank you, ladies. God bless you.
Very good, God bless you both
Well explained, thank you! This will help me with my vocation as a Franciscan brother.😊📼👍
Thank you for this 🙏 it's been a big help.
Thank you!
I watched the video through twice and it is extremely helpful. I actually feel confident enough to buy a copy of the Office used by lay people!
Bought the 4 Vol set. GAVE UP IMMEDIATELY lol Then bought book "Divine Office for Doodoos" and been praying ever sense. Online Universalis is a GREAT aid. Also It is for us. Don't be afraid to adjust to your schedule!!!! As a Benedictine I use a 1 week psalter schedule instead of the 4 week one in the LOH.
so wonderful..
Great video, thank you so much, this is really helping!!!
Thank you
Hey thanks alot for informative video, Im learning the christian prayer version, complicated!!
thank you
I really want to learn to pray this so I will pray to God to help me sort this out. I feel like a kindergartner !
me too!!
I thought they were going to actually pray it and show the content up close. I guess I should watch this again when I have received my breviary.
PS the Glory Be in the Office isn't the same as the normal Glory Be used in the rosary .. There is a couple small differences .. Also Evening and Night Office on Saturday is for Sunday
People put extreme effort into doing things they want to do-learning how to drive a car, cook, dance, developing skills for a job or career, etc. but when it comes to spiritual matters, suddenly it's "too hard". I wonder how Our Lord will accept that explanation when we see Him face to face?
Not everyone has the cognitive ability or education level to pray the Divine Office. And besides, people often are too busy with other important things in life. It's not for everybody.
@@danjohnson4082 I was speaking of people who are sheltering in place and complaining about not being able to go to Mass. And the Divine Office is not difficult to pray. It’s reading and prayers from scripture-the Psalms, the Gospels, the letters from the apostles just like Holy Mass. How is that difficult?
I bought a four volume set head pickling. This has helped.
Hi Tony, I had a lot of problems with it when I first started using the LOH and I use the 4 volume set as well. However, as time went on, I found it gets easier. However, even then I would find out I still wasn't doing everything correctly. There are a lot of books out there that can help, but the best one I found, and I don't care for the title of it, is "THE DIVINE OFFICE FOR DODOS". This book pretty much takes you by the hand (which I needed) and walks you through each office. It also shows how to handle "Commemorations" as well as the "Memorials" and "Feast days". I must say it should be on everyone's shelf. I'm not being paid to advertise this or receive any compensation for recommending it either. God bless you brother, and keep praying the Divine Office.
@@MrCtate0617 thanks, gonna check that out
@@lalaithan Your welcome, hope it helps you out as it did for me. Peace!
Woah! Laura- it’s Sam from ND Folk Choir! What a surprising joy it is to see your face in this video on the Liturgy of the Hours! I hope life is treating you well!
So, so cool, Sam! I'm just now seeing this! Hope life is going well for you as well, and that this video could be of some use, too! God bless!
For me, I would complete the "Glory Be" at the responsory, then repeat the first line of the responsory. Because (In my theological p.o.v) I want to honor the Blessed Trinity.
then I invite you to also pray the chapelet of the Holy Trinity ☺️
Thank you.
God love and blessings please pray I am debt free and own a home.
I... got lost at minute 6 :(
How I wis you are also selling even the instrumental of the divine office. Despite of not being a devotional prayer. It is still great to sing to our Lord
The Book of Christian Prayer actually comes with the musical notation for the psalms and the hymnody. I'd recommend getting that one for beginners simply because it has the music notation in the back.
@@pickcomb332 Hi...
May I know the specific book?
I am so interested about it.
Thanks
@@kevinarbolado207 Hi Kevin, its called "Christian Prayer: The Liturgy of the Hours" its the one volume "condensed" version of the four volume. And you can probably find it at the sellers website or any other bookseller that sells Catholic books. It has some nice features like the music notation I just mentioned, something the 4-volume in the video doesn't have. However, If you really want the full version you have to go for the 4 volume psalter. There's just too many feast days with particular readings that are missing from the office of readings..
. I would say also that the one volume version is also a bit more page-flippy than the 4 volume version, but that mostly depends on the season of the year. Its very similar in layout to the version in this video. Hope that helps you.
@@pickcomb332 oh thanks for the information
Would be nice if we could use the same version both sides of the Atlantic!
great video but still too complex for me (or way too many steps) - any written instructions for dummies?
It's not at all difficult if you take it step by step, doing it in love and having patience with yourself. There is no quick fix to learning the Divine Office but don't you think God is worth the time and effort? Why do we have to "dumb down" the practice of the Faith? Do you want the Lord to look you in the eye and call you a "dummy"?
Please for forgive the person above. I would say that you can definitely use the iBrievary app. You can also use it as a cheat sheet when preparing the breviary to make sure you are navigating the book correctly since the app gives it to you. This way you can get comfortable using the breviary and eventually use it exclusively if you wish. Keep the app the so you can still pray the Office if you don’t have the physical breviary.
The Laudate app also has the Liturgy of the Hours and much more prayers!
@@dixonrod2836 Thank you. This really helped.
I agree, it is very difficult. Here is what im using to test my work, the hymns often do not match, other than that, it works great and you can pray along, ignore the negative comment, I too have looked for easy to follow instructions and there really are not any, using the word dummy is congruent with many instructional books that break it down in a simple way, props to you for your hard work, best player.fm/series/divine-office-liturgy-of-the-hours-of-the-roman-catholic-church-breviary-2418963
i want to know what is the music used in the background please
I still don’t get it
It took me a while too, lol.
Be patient with yourself. It takes time but it's worth it. Do the best you can day after day, going to videos like this frequently to refine your understanding. Eventually you will learn the beautiful rhythm of the Church year and it will increase your love for Our Lord.
I’m so lost/overwhelmed
@@michaelv8609 Then perhaps you could start by praying the Psalms from Scripture. So much of the Divine Office is made up of the Psalms. You can also go to CZcams for more tutorials until you find the one that is most helpful to you.
E Neal Thank you for the helpful tips! 😀 You are kind!
Once you've prayed the liturgy of the hours for a few years you don't really need anything more (in addition to the breviary) than a calendar for the ecclesiastical year. I'd recommend one if your parish hands one away at Christmas, or if there's a reference for your diocesan website. This is to handle those times where feast day's may be transferred like Ascension Thursday. Anyway, the Breviary is by no means an exclusive prayer for clergy or religious.
The Guide always has a reference for the shorthand abbreviations it uses.
If you find it hard to keep the hours simply cut back to one or two of them for that day. Morning prayer and Evening prayer are the most important prayers of the Breviary.
I've been praying on Universalis for about a year and 3 months and what you say in the first sentence is so true - there are some Offices where I can recite nearly everything save the readings and responses from memory.
@@aahlstrom93 OH I didn't mean sans breviary, yeah it is possible to memorize the 4 week psalter but that won't help you if you want to keep all the hours and every feast day. I meant the page guide. The Breviary actually will tell you what page to go to once you've got the correct day.
Are these what I've heard called Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers and Compline?
Yes, those are the traditional names of the Offices
I have tried this once before. Since we are under "stay-at-home" orders, I am trying again, but I dont know when to say it and which one to say. I use the online website ..I am trying to make it a daily part of my life , realizing that I need to pray more during and after this time...
im checking my work and praying along with this podcast, the hymns often do not match, other than that, its very helpful and PROPS TO YOU!! Im also learning, sometimes spend more time figuring out what to do vs. actually praying it, however in time we will get this...we got this!! player.fm/series/divine-office-liturgy-of-the-hours-of-the-roman-catholic-church-breviary-2418963
Very confusing . Not everyone can afford the 4 volume set . Why don't you use the christian prayer book which is most commonly purchased
Whats the title of the piano piece as baxkground music?
my next big purchase is the 4 volume set
Pro tip: Buy one volume at a time
I would like to order a copy of the Christian Prayer.
My husband gifted me the 4 volume set from your company. Is there someone i can speak to at your company?
What times do you say each prayer
Maybe you should have started off with a lesson in ordinary time that wasn't a memorial / feast day get people up and running on the simpler form then introduced the more complex formula for special days
Can a simple Christian pray liturgy of prayer
I mean office of reading
what’s the background song?
At what time should each office be said? Readings at midnight, morning prayer at sunrise, evening prayer at sunset, night prayer- when? 10 pm?
The Office of Readings may be prayed at any time of day, but traditionally is prayed in the early morning. Morning Prayer may be prayed anytime in the morning, usually before work. The daytime hours are traditionally prayed at 9 o'clock, 12 noon and 3 in the afternoon. Evening prayer follows in the late afternoon or evening. Night Prayer ( Compline) is prayed just before bedtime.
Are we, as a lay person, allowed to pray the liturgy of the hours?
Why is this not taught in school, I attended catholic school grammar and high school. Never mentioned at all.
Wow, that seems pretty complex. Is it really that easy to follow from the guide?
Still lost :(
The 1961 Divine Office is much better. In this video, they don't explain why "prime" was removed as one of the four little hours and why Psalms 58, 83, and 109 are omitted completely from the Liturgy of the Hours. Compared to the 1961 Divine Office, this can be called The Liturgy of the Minutes because it is much shorter.
Latin Vespers are very nice
@@kx3z Absolutely!
Frank Pontone shut up, go away, pray as you like, leave alone those approaching God as they wish and stop pretending you are some kind of god yourself because you don’t at all do it very well. Believe me God doesn’t care but he’s having a good laugh at you as the rest of us are, too.
@@ksmith610 Why are you so upset about someone else's opinion? I merely explained why I prefer The 1961 Divine Office over The LOTH.
The Office of Readings doesn't say the Hymns for normal days. I have the Christian Prayer book and am so confused on how to pray the Liturgy of the Hours.
The office of readings has its hymn found in given day of the four week psalter.
I need help!
Do i need to pray all of the offices or it is okay if i can pray only the night prayer?
Assuming you are a lay person, you are free to pray as much or as little as you want. It is perfectly fine for you to pray only night prayer. Of course, the church encourages you to pray more according to your state in life. State in life EX] If you are a parent and praying 4 offices interferes with the upbringing of your kids, making them second to praying the office, then you should most likely drop at least 1 office or perhaps just rearrange your schedule.
I would say start by praying night prayer and then later ask the Lord if he is calling you to pray additional offices.
Dixon Rod ohh thank you for answering, i do started now my 2 offices per day, morning and night, hopefully i can continue this.
IBreviary is an app for this ....
prefer the latin breviary tbh
Same I have my 3 volume set and its my most prized possession
I wish I could understand Latin.
I thought the hours were lauds, terce, sect, nones, vespers, compline. These are certainly the ones I try to follow using a Psalm, Kyrie, Pater noster, as I don't need to carry a book around with me (difficult if working in the garden). Also the same Psalms are used regularly, for example terce Tues to Sat the Psalms are 119, 120, 121. I know the Psalms used differ depending on the form followed but none of the offices I follow, and I attend the offices at church whenever possible, bear much resemblence to these instructions. Now left feeling very very confused.
I went to Amazon to look for the books and the guide. The 4 books range in price from 100-200 dollars and more. There's no way I can get that, that's way too much.
@Human Great! I will check it out. Thanks.
David G O I could not find the app.
@@fredledesma7159 Try the iBreviary app
Laudate is a really great app as well
Check Ebay, Thrift books, etc...for used copies if you like having a hard copy of a book in hand.
Can I learn to do it from scripture? or is this another made up thing that is not in scripture? Not sure if I want to do it yet and need some scripture to reassure me its biblical to do. I cant be to sure now adays, and need to take everything said and hold it up to scripture. Hope you understand, but that old serpent seems to have infiltrated the church and cant believe what you hear anymore (if you ever could). Just need the verses were I can find this is all, thanks
Phew. So complex. I wish there were a follow along video
There's gonna be a simpler way to pray this! lol
I think I will stick with my Laudate app on my phone...all the prayers are in one place and updated each day.
Try Universalis, Laudate, or iBreviary.
It gets easier with time, apps are OK but nothing can replace a book. Books don't need to be charged.
There is. I say a Psalm, Gloria Patria ........, Kyrie ............, Pater noster. Checked with Father Prior and he said this was fine, the effort is what counts not necessarily spending 15 minutes reading aloud.
@@aahlstrom93 Laudate is great and all but I feel a need to sing the hymns and psalms, but I can't find the melodies for the chants.
I’m sorry but those are not the names of those prayers.
clear as mud. Finding where and what to pray should be a valid act of penance. Sigh.
Just download the Divine Office app if you have a smart phone or tablet. Makes the job 1000x easier.
Sorry that I did, thought, said and wish any bad towards you in anyway
Too many unnecessary things you mentioned. Just get straight to the structure as you would pray it literally.
If you are too impatient to learn something so simple and so beautiful, stick to something just as beautiful but takes less effort like the Holy Rosary. It was actually used by those who were illiterate and couldn't pray the Office so it should be perfect for you.
This is confusing
I prayed the on the wrong hour and now the devil says I'm going to hell forever. be careful that you only pray during the correct hours!
You are not going to hell forever! Why would you even entertain such thoughts? Do not listen to the voice of demons. They want your destruction! If you profess Jesus as your Savior and trust in His divine mercy and choose Him, then there is no hell for you. It doesn't matter if you pray the wrong office at the wrong time, God sees the intention of your heart to worship Him and loves you for that! God is not so rigid that he commands precision in our efforts and prayers! Keep at it~ God Bless you!
I think the commentor had a point but he shouldn't joke about it. Praying to God and worshipping him shouldn't be complicated or to use prayers made up of collective events that leaders make up or add through the years. That's all Earthly Tradition! They're human doings.
Mark 7: 8 - 9 says that Jesus tells us that The Commandments of God are more important than our human Traditions.
Edit: I was raised by very devout Catholic family (both side) I went to Catholic Boarding School ( 5 yrs ) went to Church every Sunday until I was 20 I came to the States and noticed some things (rules) are different. I started missing Church then when I reached my late 30s I started reading here and there researching about our Church Traditions why we do this and that where did it come from who wrote it, etc. for example our Sabbath changed from Sat to Sun who changed it, then I got upset hearing family members and Church members seem to always put Mary above God in everything they say there has to be Mary's blessings! And then about the dead and the saints that they're also involved in our prayers or in our Church activity (traditions). All these little things that our human leaders come up with.
Anyway, I'm in my early 40s now and few yrs back before I turned 40 I got tired feeling lost so after all my readings I decided that all I want to do now is concentrate on God alone and his words (Bible). The Bible itself and the people who believe in it and Jesus is God's Church.
