    Dear Fr. Jim, I cannot thank you enough!! I have been praying the Morning and Evening prayers for quite some time, but using a different APP. When a group of us decided to have a Holy Hour (for the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus), I put it together and sent it to our deacon for review. Needless to say, he uses the Breviary, so the prayers did not match!
    I tried using the Breviary app, but didn't know what to do with the hyperlinks, felt lost, and just returned to the "tried-and-true" one I had been using. We just had another Holy Hour this week and I had an opportunity to have a conversation with our deacon. He graciously offered to not only teach me how to pray using the book, but also offered to give me the copy he used when he was in Diaconate formation!
    My wife and I pray the Rosary together every night. I am hoping (now that I am learning!) to emulate our deacon and his wife and include praying the Night Prayer together as they do!
    Thank you again for such a thorough - and simplified - explanation!! God bless you! 🙏

    This was a good attempt to be helpful. I have been trying to understand how to pray the Hours for years now with little success. The basic problem comes down to 3 basic issues:
    1. The available 1 volume breviary of Christian Prayer is totally impenetrable on its own. You cannot determine how to use it correct without help.
    2. Most priests use the 4 volume set, not the one volume; they assume a familiarity with the material the most beginners simply do not have.
    3. Average Catholics don’t care about this discipline. It’s very difficult to find anyone in the laity at an average parish who know anything about the Hours.
    Thank you for trying to help Father. Maybe a more basic introduction involving the book as well as the app would be more useful for those of us at square one.

    Thank you for creating this video. It definitely cleared up some of the mechanics of praying the Divine Office for me. Could you explain the significance of the asterisks and the other crosses? For example, in today's morning prayer on iBreviary, in the second strophe the line "the man with clean hands and pure heart" ends with a red cross. Thanks again!

    • @fatherjimtech2707
      @fatherjimtech2707  Před 4 lety +19

      Good question! The daggers (†) you see in the text are used when an asterisk (*) has already been used. In normal text, *'s and †'s point to different footnotes. In the LOTH, they both indicate to the reader to continue to the next line. This is helpful in communal prayer so the ones praying the current strophe know to continue to the next line or line break.

    Great video! thank you so much for the demo. Like many of the other comments I have much confusion when using the Christian Prayer book. It gets to the point where I'm thinking about the sequence more than the prayer which is very disheartening. I watched many videos to try to understand it but this is the best I've seen.
    I am not a fan of praying with my phone because it feels like an idol and is easy to get distracted from, but I can use the app to get myself more confident and then switch over to the book again.

    iBreviary is a great app but I like the DivineOffice app much better. At the hymns they will sing it and the parts of the Divine office that are sung that aren't hymns are also done. They have links to the hymns where you can download the music and/or the sheet music. It's really like sitting with a group of friends praying!! You can also set reminders for all the hours and add your own just in case you want to add other prayers.

    iBreviary is a great app but short on documentation. . Would you explain the difference and use for the small red cross (more like a plus sign) and red cross (more like a crucifix cross) that appears at the end of sentences? You explained in Vid the small red cross is a cue to make a sign-of-the-cross. What is the cue for the other red cross?

    Hi Fr. Jim, thank you so much for creating this! This is extremely useful as I start to pray Liturgy of the Hours in my daily life. The app was confusing at first but your video has made things abundantly more clear. I am curious - you mention to small red crosses where we would make the sign of the cross, but I noticed that there are other small crosses (that look slightly different) that are marked in the text. The asterisks, I believe denote the changing from one reader/choir to another when prayed with others, but what do the other crosses mean? Thank you and God bless you!

    I am a new catholic. Are the prayers new for each day or is it the same prayers for the same times of the day?
