Wow! What a blessing you are & needed in this time of confusion in the Church. I am sooo glad I found you today. I’m a convert & thought I was living the Catholic Faith faithfully until I found the traditional movement & the Latin Mass. The more I studied, the more I realized I knew nothing about being Catholic. I have no TLM near me so I’m forced to attend NO. Once you’ve been red pilled, there is no undoing it so I struggle. Thank you Tim for sharing & may God richly bless you & your young family!

The Monastic Diurnal by St. Michaels Press is wonderful, and is priced actually at $80. The English used is elegant, but does not really follow the Latin. If you want to learn Latin by comparing it to the English, the Baronius Press version is better. This is especially true of the hymns, which are translated in overly fancy, and I think, rather silly English in the Monastic Diurnal. Also, if you like more variety in the psalms, and if you want to read the Scripture passages and lives of the Saints (not included in the one volume Monastic Diurnal), the BP Breviarium Romanum may be a better match for you. I might add that the Roman Martyrology is in neither edition, and has to be purchased separately. Thanks for your work, Timothy Flanders.

Interesting talk. I switched to the Roman breviary from LOH in December. I noticed how much longer the Roman breviary is. But wow 12 psalms for matins instead of 9 for the Benedictine office.
You’re partially correct about psalm 50 for the Roman breviary. You’re correct that in certain seasons you don’t not pray psalm 50 daily. But currently during Septuagesima season you do pray psalm 50 daily, and assuming it will be during lent as well. I think you also pray psalm 50 daily during advent as well. Yes, you don’t pray the confitetor in prime for the RB.

Thanks again for your work, Timothy Flanders. Just to let people know, the original Douay Reims Bible (not Challoner) is available online. Dr. William von Peters has done an admirable work of reformatting the text, changing only the spelling. The original Douay Reims follows the Latin even much more closely than the Challoner version, and is worth looking into, especially if you are learning Latin from the Vulgate. Facsimile editions are also available, which naturally include all of the footnotes, which Von Peters does not include.

Actually, it is interesting that the traditional Roman Breviary had also 12 psalms for Matins (even 18 for Sundays, and 24 before St. Gregory the Great) and psalms 148,149, 150 at end of every Lauds until 1911, when pope St. Pius X changed entirely the original arragment of psalms in the Breviary. For example in the original scheme the minor hours (Terce, Sext, None) had daily the same 3 parts of psalm 118 - the longest one, the only one that had been split into parts (it was always one of the differences between Roman and Monastic custom - the Roman Office did not divide psalms - with the exception of ps. 118, while the Benedictine one did split in two parts the other longest psalms), Compline also had the same psalms every day, Prime had 4 psalms (53, one variable, and first two parts of ps. 118), even Lauds was every day almost the same, with 7 psalms and 1 OT canticle, from which only 1 psalm and the canticle was variable through weekdays.
So all other psalms were distributed through Matins and Vespers. Generally psalms 1-108 where considered the Matins psalms and 109-147 the Vespers psalms, with the exception of couple of psalms taken from this two groups for the other Hours (like ps. 4, 90 and 133 for the Compline, 118 for the little Hours, ps. 62, 66 for Lauds).
What St. Pius X did, was an entirely new distribution of psalms, so it was still whole psalter in one week, but he divided every even a little longer psalm into 2 or more parts (so now it had even more divisions than the Benedictine one), so that he could give every each Hour on every day different set of psalms. The point was to lesser the burden for the clergy (especially of the long Matins), by practicly abolishing any repetition of the same psalms in any Hour throughout the week, and giving every Matins the previous festal no. of 9 psalms (or parts of psalms now) instead of the ferial 12. The negative point of that was the absolute abolition of the traditional, ancient (many say even older than the Benedictine) Roman scheme of psalm distribution in the Office, as well as abandonment of the daily repetition of the beautiful penitential ps. 50 at begining of Lauds, and ps. 148, 149 and 150 at their end, what Lauds were known for, also abolition of daily repetition of the same psalms at Compline (since originally it was purposely made with almost no variation throghout the year, so it could be said from memory in the dark before going to bed).
The other differences between the traditional Roman and Benedictine custom was, that the Romans began to say the Psalter from ps. 1 on the Sunday Matins, while the Benedictines began with ps. 1 on Monday Prime. The Monastic custom distributed Gradual Psalms throughout the Little Hours, while in the Roman use these psalms were said during Vespers, which had 5 psalms instead of Monastic 4.
If someone is more interested in changes made in the Divine Office throughout time, there are great articles on www.NewLiturgicalMovement.org/2010/10/compendium-of-reforms-of-roman-breviary.html
And here you can compare the various psalter schemas used in different breviaries pre and post Vatican II, as well as the length of the Roman Office before and after the Pius X changes: www.gregorianbooks.com/gregorian/www/www.kellerbook.com/SCHEMA~1.HTM

    Dear Mr Flanders,
usually, Marian prayers are the last in the liturgy. The Pater Noster always preceeds the Ave Maria. From Jesus, through Mary. Jesus is first, Mary is second.
So it would be more fitting to start with the Our Father and finish with the Hail Mary, to mirror the liturgy this way.
I try to send some money in your way,
    Greetings from Hungary.

    • @andrewlane7486

Vox Populi, St. Robert Bellarmine would start all of his homilies with the Ave Maria. I think one can pray to Jesus through Mary without praying the our father immediately before. What’s more important is how our hearts approach Mary and Jesus, recognizing Him alone as God and her as a path to following Him.

Does saying all 15 mysteries help one to sincerely desire to say the rosary? It’s like pulling teeth sometimes for me to want to pray the rosary.

    • @unassailable6138
      @unassailable6138 Před 4 lety +2

You don't necessarily need to pray the Rosary as it is a private prayer. I find that for me a Mental Prayer daily when I talk to Jesus , ask and listen to him for 15 minutes, and in addition praying with the Churche's public prayer, the Divine Office, and Spiritual Communion is what fulfills my prayer life best.
Having said that I pray a prayer of consecration to Our Lady and Hail Marys in latin throughout the day as well of course Our Lord's prayer first thing in the morning also in Latin as well as Servant of God's Luisa Picareta Divine Will prayers.

You lost me @ 26 min: 21 sec: The Divine Office can't possibly be 3rd (behind the Rosary, a ) in spiritual benefit or importance. It is the Liturgy of the Church, along with the Mass; and as such, it is inherently superior to all other forms of private prayer or prayer-in-common. When we lay baptized pray the DO, we complete a Liturgical Act, by virtue of our common priesthood in baptism. It is Liturgy that doesn't require a Priest! How perfect then for our times, wherein our access to The Holy Mass has been (and may continue to be) inhibited, and we deepen our understanding of the importance of the Ecclesia Domestica. This is THE prayer for families! The Liturgy continues even if they close our Parishes! The graces of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Matrimony, along with the graces received from doing the Liturgy of the Church will see us through whatever persecution may be around the corner. Get on it now brethren!
