Maybe, it got silly and more silly as the follow up tv series went through its 19 or 20 episodes.
The original 5 movies were good. But the following series was just silly.
      For example:
      Willy was a vegetarian
A lizard special forces agent looking just like Terminator big Arnie
A lizard priest who is a pacifist
The leader comes to make peace.
Martin get killed then his brother comes back looking exactly like him.
Two infiltrator lizards looking exactly like Donovan and his wife Julie
      Such and such.

It was one of Sony's ideas to minimize things back in the 80's as such as with the Mini disc that didn't go anywhere either. Still have the original recordings. With Snow on the screen when broadcasts were analog antennas on the roof.
I still remember us sitting in the living-room watching V when it first aired... And that scene when Donovan is the airducts and gets found out by the visitor after he swapped his eyes?.... so cool how Martin is hinting at a larger world in the V universe,
the War Machine that is the Leaders Empire,
the fact the visitors have enemies that have defeated them before so they need an abundance of slave troops,
that and the Water and the food shortage, its all so cool that even though this mini series and the sequel tie in shows at the time tried their best and were probably pretty ambitious for their time, they could only hint at these larger things going on! The series works fine on its own as its little morality play but what it hints at going on accross the universe sounds so Awesome to think about. Had the series gone on longer i guess they would have introduced other Alien Visitors that maybe Ally with Humanity to drive the Visitor Reptiles back into their territory? Who knows. :O
I should Imagine the books which I haven't read filled in these possibilities for where it could have gone. :)
Kenneth Johnston man, two of my Favorite shows of my Childhood, the Incredible Hulk 70's show, making me cry for David Banners always trying to help who he could along the way, but never being allowed to settle down anywhere, had to stay on the move :,( . And V for scaring the pants off me with how effective the prosthetic make up was (for the time) and its allegories to the Nazi and war crimes in WW2 :O Amazing stuff!

Juliet and Elias break into a NASA-like communications facility and send a mathematical code into space in the hopes of reaching the visitors unknown enemy. It ends as a cliffhanger of sorts. Very creepy and chilling. Loved this series. But this aspect--humans being harvested as food--now strains disbelief a little too far for me. I can sort of see storing humans as slave labor for troops. But it would be much more cost effective to use non-sentient animals that wouldn't be prone to rebellion (and thus need to be guarded) and that could be bred more quickly for food.

I loved the series. But this premise for invading Earth always just pulled me out of it.
Water is the most abundant compound in the universe. Even in our own solar system, you wouldn't have to venture into the inner solar system to find it. It exists in far larger quantities elsewhere.
The only resource more abundant on Earth than in any other part of the solar system is us, humans. Life. That's the side that appeals.
All these alien invasion series and movies where they come fight us for our resources... Just ruins it for me.

That why games like XCOM or (original trilogy) Halo manage to keep me in. They’re not attack for resources in either. XCOM they’re looking for a cure to genetic decay. Halo it’s religiously fueled genocide.

maybe they needed a breathable planet. but the main resources was humans. Despite the abundance of animal life on earth. if they came for the rats or mice, which would make more sense, they would have been hailed as heroes. Rats and more specifically mice would require less ships and resources and their breeding rate would ensure an endless food supply: The australians would have welcomed the visitors if they came for mice: czcams.com/video/9f3ekMqo4hg/video.html

water in space is not that usable, there is alot of water in our system it appears but without a lot of equipment to purify it if is useless for organic beings like us, it is often mixed with radiation and rock, we also have no evidence that the majority of planets in the galaxies have usable water, though H20 is common in the universe, it would be akin to salt water etc
