  • The New BMW R1300 GS has been criticised by many to have lost its way and become to fast and too furious.
I take out the old king the 1290 KTM Super Adventure and compare them directly on some Spanish twisties 😎

I'd much rather have the GS. I had an R1100GS for 14 years and 91,000 miles and a 950 Adventure for two years and 25,000 miles. Both great bikes. I love the Telelever system. It does aid stability but the low centre of gravity locks the GS to the road. Nick

The GS is undoubtedly a brilliant bike, but after the KTM the exhaust and engine just sound so flat and boring. The F word, Fun, is what has made me twice choose KTM over BMW after test rides.

Given the fact ktm switchgear feels like an 80s atari quality wise and the aftersales are awful I will own almost anything before a ktm.
KTM quality is not great .
For a fast tourer which most will use these for I would rather have a multistrada or the s1000xr. hardly any “adventure” bikes ever actually go on an adventure .

I think you're right Chopsy, the telelever front end has some really good points, but the front end feel is lacking .......I guess that's why alternative front ends never took over in racing, there's been several attempts over the years.

Just got a 1290 SAS of my own this past October. Haven't had as much riding on it as I would have liked due to winter, but I did just get it in for its first service last week.....before yesterday's freak spring snowfall. lol Anyway I've been loving it a lot so far. I mostly just ride around the local streets so wanted something fun for the 1 hour local blast, but could also actually take me on a nice tour when I want and maybe even the mild offroad once every blue moon. Got the comfort seat on order to help with the rear as I hear everyone say it really helps improve the comfort. Can't wait for the summer!!

Hi Chopsy, I started using trail-braking on the rear when I got my last bike (MT09 Gen 2). I’d been out of biking for a while and brushed up my skills by watching a few videos and this technique was recommended. It definitely settles the bike and makes cornering smoother, especially at lower speed.

As a current super adventure and former BMW owner I can say that the KTM isn't just a hooligan machine. It is when you want it to be but it can also be as docile as a Bmer where the Bmer can't transform into a hooligan machine. The KTM just gives you the extra option a BMW can't give.

The time it would've taken me to wait for the new bike and to get it at a price that I could stomach, I'd be waiting well in to 2026 or beyond. That and after seeing the hideous Super Duke headlight, I didn't want to risk getting stuck with the same hideous thing on my bike. @Fernando90054 Před 2 měsíci

The differences between the two bikes are very clear. On the KTM you have a more powerful engine, and that’s what gives you that instant pull at a twitch of the throttle. The GS 1300 as a not so powerful bike, you have to feel that power absence on the road riding. It’s impossible not to sense it.
Otherwise, the improvement of the GS 1300 over the 1250 predecessor is clear and significant.
I had my share of KTM bikes. They’re fabulous to ride when they work properly… The WP Apex suspensions are very good, but the feel of the Tarmac and the info from the front wheel on the new 1300 GS is bettered with this telelever Evo suspension, when compared to the 1250 GS. The new bike is very different, besides being a GS, it’s nimbler and rides faster. The top end speed capability is amplified and for public roads it’s more than enough. I can take confidence on doing long mileage trips on this bike. And I never felt it with my KTM’s. I ride bikes for the fun of it like we all do, but I also prefer a bike that ensures the way back home. Never had that Secure feeling about the KTM SDGT, a bike that I loved to own but that also gave me some strong headaches. Honestly, we’re talking about two very different worlds.
    Excellent video. Thanks

Sold my Superduke GT for a late model 1200GS for better 2 up touring comfort, and quite quickly took umbrage with the lack of feel through the telelever fork and the dull drone from the Boxer Twin engine… 6 months later I sold it and replaced with a 21 plate Super Adventure, and it was like being reunited with an old friend, only this time with more touring potential too… Sure, the new 1300GS is going to be an improvement in many ways, but until BMW ditch their trademark telelever suspension and their Boxer Twin engines, it simply isn’t an engaging or exciting bike to ride! Capable…? Absolutely… But I can drive a car or take the bus if I just want to get from A to B in an efficient manner… The KTM gives so many more smiles per mile than the BMW, and that is a significant part of motorcycling for me…

Test rode the 23 SAS and wasn’t impressed. The way the engine heat blows right at you was a no go for me.
Not to mention the quality is severely lacking compared to the GS. The buttons were super cheap chinese plastic. Felt like it was out of the 80s. The seat was ridiculously hard and uncomfortable.
I was going to buy one the day of the test ride, then after, hard pass.
Tried the 1300GS and everything about the bike was quality. Mind you, i hated the 1250 GS. BMW wasn’t on my radar, until i tried the 1300. Bike is a masterpiece. Bought a trophy with every option. Incredible machine. Sold my multi v4s and don’t miss it.

Why don't the Japanese offer a big twin to compete with these two? The 1050 V-Strom & Africa Twin don't have the power whilst Yamaha gave up developing the XTZ1200 years ago & no longer sell it where Euro emissions regulations apply. Given the sales volumes for this class, surely they should be.
I had a 1290 SAS from new for 4 years. It was great fun to ride & the most comfortable bike I've owned (comfort seat fitted) but was also the most unreliable. The first engine lasted 400 miles before the gearbox failed (motor replaced by KTM), the shock absorber started leaking just outside the warranty period & the keyless ignition developed a mind of its own toward the end of my ownership. The finish degraded quicker than it should have as well (it looked tatty after 16k even though I kept it clean & liberally applied ACF50 everywhere I could). It put me right off KTM & made me wary of European marques in general. The Japanese may not lead the way anymore in terms of their model line-ups but I reckon they're still the masters of mass manufacture & the reliability that usually goes with that. If Yamaha offered an XTZ1300 with ~130bhp at the wheel, I would be the first in line...

I think BMW look after their customers better and offer an extended warranty up to 10 years in the UK, but their bikes are no more reliable than KTM. There is a very long list of issues across multiple bikes and there are already issues with the 1300. The key difference between the brands is that KTM brings out new bikes or extensively revises an existing model on an almost yearly basis, whereas BMW tend to release a bike and it’s largely unchanged for its 10 year lifespan, with a mid life tweak after 5 years. You could argue whether innovation and new features or stability and predictability in the model range is better.

How can BMW be considered hooligan king ? The 1300 has finally raised their hp to 145. The KTM has 160+ with the tuned Super Duke engine LC8 twin, the upcoming 1390 SAS will have 180 hp. The Multistrada V4S and V4S Rally along with the KTM look sinister and are racy beasts with MotoGP derived tech.

The dive of the front suspension increases traction on the front tire which is what you want entering a corner. This will set you up for failure!!! I can’t believe he even said it!
