It's quicker to take Shinkansen from Shinagawa than from Tokyo station if you are in Shibuya.

Shibuya and Tokyo is just the opposite side of Yamanote loop line, so for Tokyoites, taking shortcut route (=Metro) is the most common option.
Take G line and change trains to M line. I think you can search this route by major map apps.
@@11holic11 But the objective is to get to Kyoto, not Tokyo station. Madison could've saved so much more time by going to Shinagawa and taking the Shinkansen from there, rather than from Tokyo station.

15 min delay isn't small for them when you hear the news of the Shinkansen staff apologizes after the train departs 10 seconds early
@@nakagawarem5729 In that 10 seconds the average person could cover ~40 meters, enough to make it from a concourse to a train. If you needed to take that train and then make a transfer later on, missing the train by 10 seconds means you’re also missing your scheduled transfer. If your transfer is at a smaller station, the next shinkansen train that stops there may not be for another 10-15 minutes. If you’re unlucky, the local/commuter train you’re transferring to may have 20-30 minute headways. Someone who was counting on making that train could end up really late because of that 10 second early departure.

But for real, Japan doesn't mess around with time. Every second counts accurately. So I say if the train is more bang on time and so does Nicky's flight, I think it could be a tie.
If she would’ve taken the bullet train from Shinagawa station instead of Tokyo station, it was much faster though since that’s the better route.

@@bubbledoubletrouble exactly. I moved to Japan 15 years ago, and my first job was a corporate job. Tight schedule and everything. I sometimes get late because of delays due to weather and such, and the train staff hands out "Late Certificates" at the ticket gates if there has been any delays. Which you can submit to your company if they do so require.
Watching this just gives me memories of my trip to Tokyo in February. The BEST country I have ever been to and genuinely think nothing will beat it. Everything about the country was amazing. Hopefully I get to go back one day.
There is a "4hour-barrier" in Japanese domestic transportation, and generally if the travel time is less than 4hours the Shinkansen, and if more than 4hours airplanes are used more. So the race would have been much more heated if the goal were set in Hiroshima City.
Actually it's the same for most city pairs all around the globe. 4 h is roughly the amount of time, where all the extra time you need for air travel (City->Airport, Security, Boarding, Taxiing x2, De-boarding, Airport->City) pays off.
And if there's a 2 h (or less) bullet train connection available, usually flights got ceased quite quickly.

It really depends on if you are close to an airport or a Shinkansen station.
In Japan, rail is king. If both Nicky and Madison have equal knowledge of their respective terminals & ticketing, Madison could give Nicky a 20 minute head start and still win. Taxi is never an advantage.

Pro-tip for the Shinkansen to Osaka - if youre late for your train's departure at Tokyo station, theres a high likelihood it will also stop in Shinagawa for 1 minute before leaving for Osaka. Shinkansens that go north do a similar thing in Ueno.

What a special experience that Japan Airlines 767 would have been! And did anyone else notice the exquisite carpets?
Madison could have made it even earlier to Kioto by taking the Yamanote line to Shinagawa station and transfer there on the Shinkansen. Why wasting your time by taking two different subway lines to Tokio station which is a maze for first timers? All Shinkansen trains on the Tokaido Shinkansen line will make a stop at Shinagawa.
As a Japanese person, I was very happy to see Madison move to the Shinkansen train door and shoot for CZcams. It is recommended to talk on mobile phones in the deck space near the door as a manner on Japanese trains.

It’s great to see you finally made it to Japan Nicky! So yes, we are quite a cash based society but it’s been changing and you can now use your credit card in about any major store. A mom-n-pop shop would likely still only take cash though. The Suica card you bought with cash at the teller (the card with the penguin) you can actually buy (and top up) at the ticket machines. The machines also have English menus. You can even use the Suica card at konbinis (convenience stores) and some restaurants too.
And yes, Japan is incredibly organized. Travel is super efficient and smooth. Airport security treat you with respect (*cough “TSA!”). Even during peak hours the waiting time will only be about 10 minutes, if that.
The Shinkansen (bullet train) are actually very quiet even when crowded, as are most trains in Japan. People who talk loudly and disrupt the “peace” are a rare sight. In order to not bother other passengers there are special areas with “phone booths.” The size of the seats are generous, probably similar to premium economy on planes?
When traveling domestically, in general, most people fly instead of taking the Shinkansen because it’s cheaper. Taking the Shinkansen is considered to be more of a luxury because of the slightly higher cost and slower travel time. Having said that, nothing beats watching the beautiful Japan scenery whizz by!
To be honest, the 100 dollar taxi ride at the end was a bit of a surprise. That is crazy expensive and no resident would pay that amount of money for a taxi. I’m sure there would have been a way from the airport to the shrine by train, which might have taken longer but would be more economical? But of course, this was a race! Loving the vids as always guys and looking forward to the next one!
I hope to visit Tokyo one day and trains my favourite transport tokyo has cool metro/subway trains tbh

Love Madison, she seems lovely, as to Japan, I have spent a lot of time there and trains are amazing, always on time (even in an Earthquake) BUT the larger stations are a hot mess, hedge mazes are easier to work out than some of the stations I've been to there.

LOVING Madison's involvement on both TPGUK & TPG. My partner is, her words, "A big Gal" and it's refreshing to see some content that acknowledges such things. It's a legit issue for her. Many PX ( premium economy) seats on international flights are what I call 'solid seats' ( have solid seat divider's & worst still, in-arm tray tables she simply can't use) & they can be an issue for her. CX HKG-BKK was about her limit in a seat like that & she simply hates BA's version even on an LHR-JFK segment. Whilst not a factor in this video I'm glad to see Madison & TPG/UK simply acknowledging that being bigger is a real-word issue for many travellers.
Andddddddd just for the haters. My own partners size became an issue after a botched thyroid op. Not through any 'bad lifestyle' & whilst she's made amazing strides in, literally, fighting & reversing the pretty much hardcoded result of a surgical teams f**k up she is a constant inspiration & learning experience for how size affect travel on just about every level.
If you're going to be a hater without knowing someones life then tbh I don't really give a sh*t but all the same it's good to shut you down with your presumptive BS before you get going.
Agreed on Madison's inclusion! I'm a fat woman - it's really nice to see a fat person along for these trips as the rest of the crew seems to be not only straight-sized but quite thin (I remember Jean fitting in the SA 'closet! haha). I don't have a problem fitting into seats, but i'm not far from that - and it's nice to see what really would be comfortable for someone my size, or around my size. AND - in my teens and 20s I traveled A LOT (was fat back then, too - inherited crappy metabolism and hormonal issues) - representation is awesome and I think it's great for regular-sized folks to see fat folks off doing exciting things & kicking ass, too!

It surely wouldn’t be easy traveling as a very overweight person. But it’s also difficult to travel as a very tall person. Yet you never hear tall people asking for understanding, or extra accommodation or privileges (the days are long gone when exit row seats were given). And people surely never express sympathy for a tall person or the struggles they go through when traveling.
Overweight people if determined enough have the ability to transform their body, unlike the very tall.
Call me prejudiced but the more sympathetic society is towards clearly unhealthy individuals then the more comfortable and accepted these individuals will feel. And not do what is required to take control of their health❤
@@steftrando if you have a hormone problem your metabolism can completely shut down, which makes it easy to put on weight and hard to work out cause you're exhausted. This happened to me as I discovered I have a thyroid disease. I have been both skinny and borderline overweight... I lost a lot of weight but it was a lot harder than it would be for a normal person

How much prep are you allowed to do before you do the races
Going west to Osaka/Kyoto, the high-speed rail has got planes beat easily, just wait until the new Maglev line opens to Western Japan, Tokyo - Osaka flights is just gonna be a thing of the past
It's still a decade before the Maglev reaches Osaka. The first step is just the Tokyo-Nagoya line.

The big advantage of the Shinkansen is its dedicated track. The trains can break directly from top-speed into the station. Meanwhile in Europe, most high-speed rail infrastructure is in between cities, but not within the cities itself. So once your TGV, AVE or ICE reaches Paris, Madrid or Berlin outskirts, the trains have to use old, shared infrastructure with 80-160 km/h top speed.
For the next race, you should do Seoul to Busan
Anywhere past Kobe in the south, or Sendai in the north, it's better to take flight as it would be faster and also cheaper.

I so much appreciate your respecting our culture (not speaking on train and censoring walking people) as I expected to see something uncomfortable I feel often by watching foreign tourists videos.
Anyway, the competition btw by plane and Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto is not good challenge. It is simply because there is no Kyoto airport and Osaka Airport is bad at accessing even to Osaka, while Shinkansen stops at the center of Kyoto, so very predictable.
I believe you can challenge this next time from Tokyo to Hiroshima, which is just 4 hours access by both transportations.

Thanks to preparations for the Olympics, things are a lot better than they used to be wrt accepting cards. Unless you’re truly in the boonies or dealing with a hole-in-the-wall there’s a good chance they’ll take your Visa/Amex.

If I suddenly have to go to Kyoto without prior planning, always Shinkansen. If I could plan 1-2months in advance then plane is cheaper even from fullservice airline.

Nicky never had a chance, especially going to Kyoto via Itami Airport. Going somewhere farther from the Shinkansen line could make for a more fair race.
the shinkansen isn't actually that fast the tgv's in france and many other trains in europe that go nearly as fast/ as fast as the shinkansen it's just that the shinkansen came first and has higher ridership numbers
Japan one of the best countries in the world be kind and helpful and give help our family were going to Japan for a holiday then my family was sick so we canceled at least we are going in September

I also watch Japanese vloggers and that was my first thought, too. They tend to remove their shoes.
Why did she got to Tokyo Station? Shibuya to Shinagawa is by far quicker.
Why did Madison go to Tokyo? All Tokaido Shinkansen trains stop at Shinagawa which is much closer to Shibuya and quicker to get to, and since the Nozomi trains run roughly every 10 mins, she probably could've got an earlier train. It also looks like she got a Hikari, not the faster Nozomi, as the sign was red when she got on, Nozomi is yellow.
Also it is acceptable to use the phone in the vestibules (bit at the ends of the carriage where the doors are), and why does she call it the "Nozomi line", Nozomi are the fastest trains (which she didn't even use), along the Tokaido Shinkansen line, there are also Hikari and Kodama which are slower.

This is true, but if you're travelling unreserved and the train is packed it's easier to get a seat if you start at Tokyo Station, since the train starts from there.

I'm surprised it's still cash only so much in Tokyo. Would have thought smartphones would have been prevalent there. I always got confused between needing two different company metro/train cards.
Why would you need two different card? Suica works for everything except the Shinkansen. And you can even use Suica to pay for most vending machines and corner stores. It's mostly kiosks, bars and old school restaurants that require cash these days. Well, and the temples and stuff of course.
Im sorry, Its really hard to ignore that both hosts are obviously way out of their wheelhouse here.
If you ask a Japanese person which means of transportation to go from Shibuya to Kyoto, I think that more than 90% of the time they will choose the Shinkansen. This is because there are few transfers and you can reach Kyoto Station on time.

It's discouraged, especially talking on phone is considered very rude. Talking quietly isn't that big of a deal on a Shinkansen, though, but on local trains you should be silent if possible.
