LeBron's Overrated Defense Exposed - 2017 NBA Finals

  • LeBron had a great offensive series, but also a very poor defensive series in the 2017 Finals. Most of it was Durant lighting up LeBron, but he also made mistakes when off of Durant. Once again, the notion that LeBron can effectively guard 4 or 5 positions was proven to be a myth, as he had far too many problems trying to guard his own position, let alone 4 or 5.
    Durant, 2017 season
    25-8-5 on 54/38/88
    Durant, 2017 Rounds 1-3
    25-8-4 on 56/42/87
    Durant, 2017 Finals
    35-8-5 on 56/47/93
What makes Durant's exposure of LeBron's defense so incredible is not just the +10 PPG increase in volume, but the slight increase in efficiency while doing so. It's hard enough to simply maintain efficiency at a much higher +10 PPG volume, let alone slightly improve it.
Durant became the only player to shoot 55/45/90 in an NBA Finals under the non-shortened line with a decent amount of attempts. He shot 56/47/93. He may very well have had the most efficient scoring Finals performance in history due to LeBron's poor defense.
Chauncey Billups was formerly the only player to shoot 50/40/90 (or 50/45/90) in an NBA Finals under the original line with 51/47/93 in 2004.
According to ESPN, Durant was 13 of 21 (62%) when guarded by LeBron up to Game 3. I have not found full series stats so far. ESPN has sometimes had inaccurate methods of of recording FG/FGA against one player, so these stats may be sightly off.
    nesn.com/2017/06/kevin-durant-...
LeBron has now been outscored in 4 of 8 NBA Finals by the other team's top perimeter player - 2007, 2011, 2012, 2017, further debunking the myth of LeBron's elite defense or ability to effectively guard 4 or 5 positions.
Durant averaged 30.6 ppg on 55% and 35.4 ppg on 56% in both the 2012 and 2017 Finals against LeBron, well above his season and 3-round averages entering the Finals in both years.
Replace LeBron with Jordan, and he easily hold Durant at or below his 25 ppg season and 3-round averages with far more success than Tony Allen had. Even as a 38-year old Wizard, Jordan could take one of the worst defenses to one of the best pre-knee injury
2001 Wizards = 2nd worst in ppg allowed the year before.
    Up to the injury game
2002 Wizards = allowed 92.2 ppg through 47 games (Jordan missed 1 game)
    - would be tied for 6th-best in the league with the Pistons.
2002 Wizards = allowed 92.0 ppg in the 46 games Jordan played
    - would be tied for 5th best in the league with the Nets
    After Jordan's injury
2002 Wizards = allowed 96.8 ppg in the remaining 35 games
    - would be ranked 19th in the league
    - and fell to 11th in ppg allowed for the overall season.
Like Jordan's individual numbers, his defensive impact also improved as the season went on prior to his injury
The Wizards started the season off slow with a 2-9 start
    - and allowed 98.4 ppg during the 2-9 start
    - on pace for 5th worst in the league
In Jordan's last 35 games pre-injury after the 2-9 start
    - the Wizards allowed 90.0 ppg
    - on pace for 3rd best in the league
When Jordan and Rip Hamilton played together, they were 15-1 in their last 16 games together up to the injury
    - The Wizards allowed 86.3 ppg in that 15-1 stretch
    - Easily on pace for the best in the league
    - The 2002 Heat were number 1 at 88.7 ppg allowed
Rip played 78 games the previous year and the Wizards were still 2nd worst in ppg allowed. The Wizards were by far the best defense in the league when MJ and Rip played together pre-injury
Jordan has 0 playoffs with a teammate averaging 22+ PPG to LeBron's 4, with Kyrie averaging over 25 ppg in both the 2016 and 2017 Playoffs. Jordan never had a 25 ppg teammate for one series, Kyrie had that for 8 rounds collectively and 29-4-4 on 47/42/90 for the Finals.

Bronsexuals have so many excuses lmao. LeBron should have set the tone for his team defensively as the leader. KD showed up every 4th quarter leading his team and giving LeBron buckets while LeBron decided he was going to pass to Korver. Anyone without bias can see that KD was the better player this series. LeBron played 0 defense so he can grab rebounds ala Westbrook, and secured his triple double average with JR Smith's meaningless three at the end. You think a psycho competitor like Jordan would lay down and let KD bust his ass in the every game in the 4th quarter?

I dont want to hear any fucking excuses.
Lebron has help, he constructed his own roster, he recruited half those players; he has the second most stacked and talented team in the entire NBA. He rested so much of the regular season to prepare for the playoffs. Everything he's wanted, he's gotten, so there is NO excuse for him and his team to be demolished by Golden State like they are now.
As a leader, it is his job to make sure his team is ready and able to play.
All year his team's defense has been bad, and much of that can be pointed to Lebron's poor leadership. How do you expect your team to perform when you insult them, criticize them, miss games, and on the games you do play, you yourself don't play good defense?
When you run a garbage "system" when 2 players are required to hold the ball and are tasked to make plays for everyone, where you only pass the ball to players only when theyre open, they will never get into a rhythm.
Look at all these shots Kyrie has to make, all isolation isolation isolation. No way in hell this Cavs team plays good defense, and they can't even construct an offense that can get easy looks so of course they can't compete with the Warriors. Thats what you have when you have Lebron, an uncoachable diva, on your team.
This Cavs team never had a chance with their piss poor defense and all the open looks they have given up and much of this is on Lebron James too.
Is Golden State stacked? Sure. But a well-coached, disciplined team that plays good defense can compete with a team like that, such as the San Antonio Spurs who were up 23 until Kawhi got injured, and none of those things describe Lebron or his Cavs this season.
And why the fuck does Lebron James pass so much?
He could average 50 driving to the rim against these midgets and he would have a better chance than what I just saw.

LeBron's defense has ALWAYS been weak. When he plays free-safety and can hide his defense by playing free-safety, he appears much better at defense than he actually is. Against good teams, when he's actually forced to play defense, his lack of defensive IQ, fundamentals, and movement is really shown. Yeah, he can 'guard' all five positions but he can't guard them well AT ALL. I think the Warriors as a whole team shot above 60% when guarded by him. You can't be the 'best player in the world' and not play defense and hurt your team on offense by being so ball dominant. That's why, in my opinion, Curry and Durant are better players than LeBron. Yeah, Curry can't be as versatile on defense as LeBron but his fundamentals are much better and he can guard the 1-2 positions pretty well and is often a leader in the league in deflections, deflating guard fg%, and steals; Curry is also better than LeBron offensively it's not even close. And Durant. Well, this finals showed exactly why Durant is better than LeBron. Can defend ALL positions well and is a larger threat. Who cares about TDs when it's hurting your team and your teammates' performance and you can't win?

I don't really care about people saying MJ would've lost this or that series. But one thing I do know, is that MJ nor Kobe would've allowed themselves to be humiliated and disrespected by KD like that.KD literally snatched Lebron's heart out.Even shit-talked him and still beat him in 5.MJ and Kobe would've harassed the hell out of KD on defense, and mentally abused him.Even Iman fucking Shumpert did a better job on KD then LeBron did.To go 0-3 with 4 minutes left at your home, and a game winner drained in your face, and run away from the ball on a potential go-ahead shot? That alone has LeBron out of the conversation of ever eclipsing MJ, he needs to focus on passing Kobe or Shaq if anything.

Apparently Lebron was playing in a far easier East than MJ and still failed. Another failed laughable hair-splitting argument.

he got torched by Durant in this series and 2012(Durant avg more against Lebron in the finals than his playoff and reg season avgs). exact opposite happened with Michael Jordan, 91 finals Magic was avg 22.9 in the 1991 playoffs, and MJ held him to 18.6ppg. then Drexler was avg 26.9 ppg 489%FG 7.7 ast 7.2 rb. then MJ held him to 24.8 .407 FG 5.3 ast, 7.8 rb. see Lebron man averages go up, & MJ's goes down. same with Gary Payton, he was avg 21.7 ppg .500%FG in the playoffs. then MJ held him to 18.0 ppg, .44%FG
LeBron really hurts his team bad when his man scorches them like that. his triple double avg is pretty empty fools gold, when you see how bad his defense was
if MJ would have let Magic avg 27 on him(and yes he gaurded magic 85% of the time that series), let Drexler avg 31, and let Payton avg 25, they might have lost those 3 finals. but like the GOAT, and a true great defender, he held them not just to their avg, but below. LeBron is no MJ
