My mother made the absolute best whipped sweet potatoes with toasted marshmallow topping. And yes we ate it as a side dish alongside the turkey and everything else. It was a nice contrast to all the savory things on the menu.
The tradition of doing this dates pretty far back to the beginning of the 20th century- c. 1918. My mother called it “candied yams with Marshmallows.” Mom was born in 1921, and she was expert at making this dish. Her sweet potatoes or yams were always super creamy and not too sweet, and the marshmallows were absolutely flawlessly toasted to a pleasing golden brown.

@@Fermifire homemade from scratch tamales might be the greatest food to ever exist. When we had parades growing up the Hispanic moms and grandmas around would wake up early to make a bunch of them and have their kids go sell them 2 for a dollar. I know they're not the easiest or quickest to make from scratch but they were the best parts of the parades for me as a kid.

My family didn't make sandwiches after Thanksgiving but we did wrap turkey, cranberries and and stuffing in lefsa. As for yams and marshmallows, ick! We always had roasted turkey with stuffing made with celery and nuts, roasted yams, mashed potatoes (leftovers used to make lefsa), fresh cranberry sauce made from berries (not canned) and squash or pumpkin pie with ice cream.
