The person who submitted Build 1 definitely needs to make sure they're on the most current BIOS before upgrading to a 5800X3D. That might also solve their RAM issue
I thought that as well, and I noticed he also wrote that he needed to update, suggesting he may never have updated the bios.
IM having issues with that right now as well. i HAD the most current bios build but they released a new one that is refusing to take...sighhhh
@@robertkirkpatrick1826 Make sure the BIOS you've downloaded is for your exact Motherboard, revision and all. I've seen the same model of motherboard have five or six revisions before being discontinued. Also make sure the USB drive you're loading the BIOS Update file is formatted in the FAT32 format. Finally, if you've done both of those and it's still not working, see if there's any additional BIOS updates between the most current one and yours. Once in a blue moon I've had a motherboard not want to update, but only because it was on the original BIOS and the new one was several years newer. After gradually upgrading it, it was able to install

It's always important to remind people to build balanced systems. It's ridiculous how many people have wanted me to build them an X3D system because they watched the reviews, just to find out they're pairing it with a 3060 to play at 1440p. This is the unfortunate side effect of testing CPUs with a 4090, and GPUs with a 7800x3d. Those that don't know exactly what they're doing mistakenly think _they're_ going to see the same uplift when the rest of their system isn't flagship parts.
Then again people who get x3d and play games like Stellaris know wtf they're doing. Always get the right tool for the job, balanced or totally unhinged.
@@luzhang2982 Trust me, they _didn't_ know what they were doing. Besides, if you have to cherry pick a niche game like Stellaris that kinda just makes my point that most often it's _NOT_ smart.
I thought modded stellaris and Factorio are pretty cpu demanding to the point where at some high level players could use the cpus. but I doubt it scales with x3d cache.
its also an issue on the other side of the spectrum. People who build intel and only game and do nothing else with their system but game. They want a 4090 for 4K gaming and realy want to pair it with an i9 13900k or 14900k while at 4k it is a waist and hard to cool. A 13700k or 14700k can easely drive the 4090 at 4k without bottleneck since it only needs to supply the 4090 with 60-100 FPS data at the best. Aspecialy in high demanding graphical games where the 4090 is pegged at 100% the entire time at 4k gaming.
True at 1440p or lower the 13700k or 14700k will be a bottleneck, but you dont buy an overpriced 4090 for anything other than 4k gaming IMHO
@@ronniebots9225 Yeah, I always look at the reality of a build. You can use hypotheticals until you go numb, but at that other end of the spectrum anyone realistically buying a 4090 isn't concerned with saving a measly $100-150 on their CPU and they can afford proper cooling. Those people want "the best" and only an i9/R9 will do.
Not to mention if you're only gaming the i9 power usage quickly turns into a non-issue. I've built 2 i7s and an i9 system and used 360 AIOs for all of them. They would only hit thermal max when artificially _forced_ there with Cinebench. I've never seen the game yet that can stress a CPU like that and the AIOs are more than sufficient for 99.99% of real world use cases.
My personal system is one of those i7s and I wish I'd gone with an i9 cause I do a lot of mixed use of gaming, compiling, and compression/decompression. Once I got a taste of how helpful they can be I wish I had all those extra e cores so I'm already looking to upgrade.
I gave AMD another shot on one of the systems I built a year ago for the kids' gaming setup and I've had nothing but problems with it. Cores parking and not waking up, constant USB dropouts, and horrible 1% lows in VR. 16 BIOS updates within a year is _not_ normal. Who besides a fanboy wants to put up with that? If Zen5 doesn't really wow me I'll be looking at a 15900k later this year. At the very least the new node should get it's power usage in a far better place than they are right now.

Downgrading my CPU to an i3 with integrated graphics and my RAM to 1 stick of 8GB and my storage to the cheapest hard drive (not SSD!) so I can get a $220 AIO 😂

I chose an AIO for my h6 flow build largely for aesthetics (I really like the LCD screen on the kraken 360 which shows CPU and GPU temps at all times). If I'd had a closed case I would have used my existing noctua air cooler. For that build the person could go for the cheaper aio below the air cooler Paul chose (thermal frost?).
@@formulaic78 thermal frost is ugly asf, I am new to the pc world and have been researching pc for the past few days as I want to treat myself with one. I am planning a full white open build and really want to get a AIO with lcd screen for aesthetics. But it seems that if you want one with lcd that looks and performs half decently you are looking at 200 - 300 price range which costs more can my cpu. does anyone know about a decent AIO with lcd screen at a better price?

Those White 4080s are actually just over 1000 (the Zotac one is 1050) but the prices you see are from scalpers on Amazon. I've been looking at the Zotac one recently but it's hard to get them when they do manage to come back in stock. Hopefully I can snag one soon. That build is actually pretty close to what I'm building, though I'm going with an AMD CPU

Because you wont get any more FPS that way not even half an FPS as it is really hard to make any 400 or lower class intel CPU draw enough power that it down clocks a simple peerless assassin will do the job equality well

I am a total beginner at pc building and I am currently in the process of doing the initial research of all the parts I want/need. This video really helped.
#2 rule for beginners: DO NOT underestimate the importance of the psu. If one part is bad, you just replace it: if the psu is bad, it could fry your whole build.
You don't need to overspend or going for a huge wattage: just find a brand using a good oem (most of the psus are made by some oems like SuperFlower and then rebranded by various corsair, evga etc etc)
Sorry if you knew already about it, but it was a rule I didn't knew when I started and I just lucked out on a half decent psu, realizing just years after how much that could have costed me 😂 (the unit died without killing my pc in the process)

Build 1 RAM cannot generally be used at XMP with 4 Dimms at 3600. I would not be surprised if it fails. Should swap to 2x16 3600 for better results with a 5800x3d.
AMD is hard, if you need better DDR timings, intel is the better pick, XPM profiles !
It's a similar situation to build #3, and something that makes RAM upgrades a bit more of a pain than they need to be. Adding another identical kit won't always be stable, but the options are to do that and adjust speed/timings (which is a tough ask for newer builders) or to buy a new kit and sell the old one.
I also noticed he said he needed to update bios to be able to use a newer cpu, so that could maybe also help with the ram issue.

Extra fun points/topics on spending on cooling versus performance:
Most people are aware of thermal throttling in the sense "At 95C the CPU will slow itself down". But it actually goes deeper than that - temperatures affect how much the CPU runs at boost clock speeds! So having more powerful cooling = lower temperature = running boost clocks more. And more boost = more performance, right?
Well yes, but actually no.
Boost clock really only matters for the thread being boosted, but your overall system can still only run the same amount of work at a time. If you had a more powerful CPU (ie more cores), then while you'd be boosting less your system would be able to do more at a time. Which also means needing to juggle active processes less, and therefore less context switching, and therefore a given process stays on the CPU longer.
Plus, overall package temperature doesn't actually tell you what parts of the CPU itself are actually hot. So remember that point earlier about boosting more? That means a given core is drawing more current. Which ironically means that by running your system at a lower temperature you can actually shorten the lifespan of your cores. So if we're talking 75C vs 95C then yes, invest more in cooling. If we're talking 65C vs 75C, buy a more powerful chip.

Power supplies: I buy oversized power supplies for longevity into future builds. For instance, my light build is using a 550 W PSU I bought in 2010.
I am thinking of a 1000+ W PS when I do my next build so I can be ready for a 5 series later.... Makes sense to me.

When you buy a expensive PSU you will have it for many years.
My corsair 1200w is going strong since 2009, its the only pc part i havent changed for 6-7 builds now.
Rihgt now its running 4090 with a 14900k on full blast the system uses 850 watt :) hope this helps
Thank you Paul! Your videos have helped me with both of my builds so far. I remember building my first one from your NewEgg days. There is plenty of room in the full size case, Thor V2, sorry I forgot. and thanks for the tip on the XMP! I already had two sets of RAM die and it was a pain to troubleshoot. I initially only bought two, I ended up getting 4 to replace them. I was definitely looking at GPUs as well, was hoping to wait out for the 50 series to see if they have more v ram for the mid tier GPUs. sadly the closest Microcenter to me is 3 hours away in a couple directions.
im thinking about building a 14900k rig, but MUST I cool it with a water cooler? I don't like water coolers since they tend to fail quicker than air coolers. Aren't there some air coolers up for the job?

i like the new series. I also watch @PCBuilderChannel. Jason is great! Just an idea to make it more novel and a twist on "fix" my build. Maybe from comments, person says something along the lines of: "I recently built x list and am having this issue..." offer some trouble shooting advice or leads to start with. It could be its own segment on the build fix. 2-3 builds like you just did and than 1-2 troubleshoots. I have an annoying issue where my VGA light comes on my mobo every now and then. doesn't cause any actual performance issues. haven't been able to figure out exactly what it is, but i think it happens when I turn on my power to my PC before powering on my display. or if i leave my display on by accident and power on my PC while my display is in sleep mode. the light won't turn off unless i restart. more of any annoyance than anything. stupid bright red light contrasting with my all black and green aesthetic.
Hey Paul! You should spend a bit of time for your viewers checking things like... Will that motherboard actually run all four SSDs at reasonable speeds? Many people make the mistake of not checking the manual to see how the slots will function depending on their planned use.

This is such a funny video as I had a discussion with someone in your comments about unnecessary cost. Your reasoning on extremely unnecessary cost for cooling is what I was trying to get through to them. They fervently refuted my notion with spending less on cooling for more performance. As the overkill cooling would make their processor and motherboard last longer. They aren’t wrong, but that’s so unlikely an issue. You’ve shown you can balance that efficiency for better parts.
They're also blatantly wrong since what the overspending on cooling actually does is let the CPU run boost speeds more, which is what's actually more damaging since that's more at-point heat generation in a given part of the chip (even if it's less total heat dissipation). And while you could argue more boosting = more performance...you'd get more performance just from buying a more powerful chip anways.
Not sure what they were smoking. CPU coolers cool the CPU so that has nothing to do with the lifespan of the mobo, and even if you argue the board components could be affected that's up to the board to cool not the CPU cooler. I mean besides the thermalright coolers are some of the best on the market for under $40, so even if you double that to $80 for a be quiet cooler lets say and it's 2* colder under load. That 2 degrees will not help your parts last longer. The thermal max would have to be reached for sustained periods to measurably kill the lifespan of components.
Honestly, I'm really looking forward to this new series. Although you're being sponsored, you're still taking your time to review someone's parts list, which is beneficial for everyone online. I can't wait to watch future episodes from you!
Love this content, so many choices for people who don't build often and lots of stuff can get lost in the weeds.
The only thing I always reccomended is a fully modular PSU. They can be used throughout upgrades and make building and cable managing so much nicer. And the upgrade $40 max. Unless someone is on an extreme budget, and at that point, I'd still say get a modular PSU and get used parts.

I like to keep my cpu tdp low for less power draw and heat and I edit,stream,and play games. I got a used 5700x for 130 and the tdp is 65watts. Love the videos Paul!
Hey. Have you done a video going over a full PC setup with peripherals for those who may be coming over from PS5 or Xbox Series X consoles?
I'm shocked the SSDs in build 2 weren't mentioned at all. If budget wasn't an issue then I would've recommended getting something like corsair T500s or at least something with TLC chips because they have been reported to have better longevity. To put P3s in a high-end build like that (not that the p3 is a bad ssd at all) feels like a massive missed opportunity for both better performance and better reliability/longevity. Plus, the controller in the T500 runs cooler as well and, if the motherboard only has limited 4.0 slots, would run very cool at 3.0 speeds.
Also, some RMe models from corsair have had reported coil whine issues. At that price it probably would be better to go all the way and get the RMx.

That was mostly because he didn't specify which SSDs he had, I just added the P3 to fill out his drive/TB count. SSD variations like which use TLC/QLC nand, dedicated RAM cache etc are worth considering but they don't have as much of an impact on gaming performance. I'm keeping an eye on the comments though, and I'll see if I can work in some more discussion on "under the hood" SSD stuff if people are interested -- especially for a dual use system for video editing or something like that where it can have a much bigger impact on daily use. @@paulshardware That was actually my fault Paul. I should have specified why I do that. I have backups that I prefer using separate drives for, which is the only reason I populate so many NVME spots on the board. I think the "under the hood" commentary would be interesting, BTW.

I paired my 7800X3D with an H150i Elite LCD XT. Maybe I could have saved a few bucks with an air cooler but I like the aesthetics of the AIO and I wanted to try out liquid cooling.

I have a build similar to the first one you went thru. R5 3600, Asus B450M-A II, Corsair Vengence LPX 32GB 3200MHz ram, MSI Mech 2X OC RX 6700 XT. Is my EVGA 600W power supply going to be enough if I swap out my CPU with a 5700x3d? PC Part Picker shows 510 watts with the 5700x3d. I appreciate any comments from Paul as it is his expertise I am looking for. Thank you.

Another thing that is really really important is to never buy a part because of the brand of that part. Your goal when PC building should be to buy the the value you want for the cheapest amount of money you can. What is valuable to you is your choice, like a portable ITX LAN box for example. If trust is in question for a part, then looking up reviews on that part is always the answer. Oh, and always double check what you think you need for a performance target vs what can achieve the performance target. You don't need a 13700k, a gen4 7400MB/s drive, and a 4080S for 1080P 144hz.
Pay attention to PSU prices, and don't be afraid to get a bigger one if it's cheaper. I built my girlie a new Fractal Terra rig. The 600W Be Quiet was (and still is) $14 cheaper than the 500W.
wow... I just put all of my current parts in the pick a part and monitor and rig are 6500.00 and sadly I paid more for some of my parts than how they are listed.. plus my water cooling parts and chiller.. this hobby can get expensive, it is cool that Paul does such a great job of showing folks affordable builds as well as mid and high end.
Good video. A couple of requests would be a side by side comparison of the original vs your recommended build, and just overall builds that DO have restrictions rather than don't and are just worse for value overall.
16:08 P3 Plus is QLC no DRAM. Crucial has new 2TB T500 TLC/DRAM with Phison E25 controllers for $139.99. The Kingston KC3000 uses slower Phison E18 controller.
These days DRAM isn't as important as it used to be. For specific performance tasks it can be a huge difference, but pretty much any 4.0 drive would give you all the speed you need. Plus, there's a lot of misunderstandings surrounding dram and longevity because pretty much all modern NVME drives use HMB so it's not like in SATA SSDs where not having dram would grill the chips. For NVME, DRAM is purely for speed. I do agree with the qlc/controller comment but in another comment Paul replied that he was mostly just filling out the list rather than making specific SSD choices and he might make a dedicated SSD video some day.
Like Bobo, I wanted to go with an all-white build but ran into the same problem with the prices on white graphics cards. Not spending $500 more on a 4080 just because it is white. All-white builds are increasingly becoming more popular (PC Centric and Provoked Prawn have built quite a few), so hopefully manufacturers will start making more white components.

One thing I have noticed since I've been looking for a white build- is that the white tax has got incredibly huge this last generation. Very limited parts are white now. I guess that's supply/demand though
I was in a bit of a analysis paralysis during my SFF build, was half-copying an existing build just so it would all fit in the case + being in Australia and wanting to get from 1 supplier to save on shipping. Definitely would've got an air cooler instead of the AIO after I found out which model actually fits lmaoo. ALTHOUGH, 0 complaints so far after a year and a half!

Question on the last build as I continue learning more. The speed of the original memory picked out was 5600 but you said to go higher (the 6000 you found was cheaper, so that’s a plus, no problem there). The intel website said that both the 13700k and 14700k processors would pair up to a 5600 speed memory. Why go higher than that in any case other than price and timings? Also, why air over aio?
I always buy big bulky air coolers , the only downside is that it is hard to push down the GPU socket lock. But the price, performance and maintenance is a win 🎉
Im definitely not claiming to know more than you do Paul, you clearly know your stuff but I thought because of the size of the Y70 case, you want to fill out the case with as many fans as possible to maintain decent airflow? I'm planning to a build in the Y70 touch myself and I am planning to use up all of the fan spots.
Regarding timings, you mention tightening or loosening what does that mean

Hey Paul love the videos and i like the new series. However in the most respectful way possible i have some suggestions.
1. I know its not always possible but some basic context like what its going to be used for and budget would make imo a big impact on recommendations so maybe how the application tell you the use case for the build and budget ?
2.maybe give more than 1 choice ? like the "max performance choice vs the "hey this is way cooler" choice which would be the performance vs esthetics choices or the budget vs the flex choice
3. I would personally want to hear your reasoning behind the choices behind the part chosen you did it some some of them but for build 2 imo it did not make a lot of sense to have him keep the formula board without a 4090 and even upgrading him to a 64gb kit 4090 would have a bigger impact in most scenarios.
