- At first glance it's easy to consider the Opel Manta GSe ElektroMod as nothing more than a fanciful design study or concept car ready to pose on a motor show stand. Except this is a proper, road-legal electric conversion that's been done right.

I think that cars like this will attract the reluctant EV buyers. And companies should be making smaller, lighter and less fussy EVs. Nearly forgot thanks Dave!
Smaller and lighter is exactly what EVs need to be! This was fun, but it shows that a small electric sports car could be fun. Remember that Honda concept from a few years ago?
I like the concept. But that 200km range is still a deal-breaker for me.
I know it will never go into production but it has restored my view that you can still make a beautiful electric car. Love the review Dave.

Yes they can make a beautiful electric car, but what's the point if they won't sell them.
@@MrBeebeesee I never understood that either. Only if they don't expect to sell many of them, cause they'd need to re-set the howl factory into making all parts specifically for this car, no other reason. Overall cost.
@@4Everlast Yeah, people just wouldn't buy them. What i've noticed is that unless an electric car isn't unnecessarily large and ugly people aren't interested.
Great example would be honda e. When it was announced i was like wow, that is something. I got to test drive it (i was working at the dealership) and i loved it. The little honda e was just a happy car with cute round eyes and sympathetic design. Total opposite of the blood thirsty rabies hound car lookalikes of today's cars. The downside of the honda was the small battery (which makes the car actually ecological) and "high" price (not really, same price as nissan leaf). Turns out people didn't want to buy that car. Now the new e model (honda e ny1) is unnecessarily large, ugly, and more expensive. It is expected to sell well.
They don't design "warmth" and soul into the cars anymore, only cold artificial feeling of a doomsday. Maybe it reflects today's world and society, i dont know, just a thought.

Just googled Honda E, lovely mid-sized car, as you said.
Yeah people want an eco-friendly car, but they most times have no idea how much coal or oil you need too make and/or produce electricity for those same "eco-friendly" cars.
Meanwhile Tesla buzzed around in an e-car magnetically powered, a 150 years ago. Sure it was slow, but that's what you get, can't get a lot of HP without a lot of electrical input.
Honda E NY1 isn't as ugly(from the back at least) as most e-cars I see on the road but it's definitely bland A-F. It has no character.
There's a definite push of bad taste coming from the west especially, from all art forms sponsored by the billionaires and the government, from shitty films, "modern art" that looks like a child found a bit of paint and decided to play with it, to architecture, and yes cars as well. It looks like A) they're going for the bland slick design of Star trek, or B) they're putting out ugly and large cars to discourage people from buying them, as they're all in on the 15 minute cities where they want you not to have a car of your own, as K.Schwab said "they'll own nothing and they'll be happy". They're cooking something nasty for sure for 30+ years already.
I have 1974 Opel Manta, which I love, and I think this new Manta is amaising!

It's genius. Well done Opel. It will never be put into production like that do as it just would not pass safety tests or pedestrian protection tests. Them A pillars too unless they are made out of carbon fibre and titanium would not be strong enough in a crash. The car would be super expensive if it was made to pass all the tests and still look like this unless they do a limited 100 vehicle production run or something I do not see it happening.
This is purely a one-off car. Opel did consider making more for people who wish to have the same conversion work done, but that is also quite complicated to do even for a small production run.

Cool car I worked for Vauxhall and had a few Mantas loved them. Opel was always viewed as a bit more upmarket than Vauxhall probably because of the German connection even though they were the same basically. A bit like with Peugeot today.

Looks like fun! I had a 1972 yellow Rallye and enjoyed it greatly despite having only 75HP here in the States. Somehow I doubt those A pillars meet current safety regs.

We've been told officially that it won't be entering series production. This car didn't have an airbag.

It has been rumoured that Opel may repeat the conversion process with those willing to supply Manta cars, but it's complicated for an OEM to do.
Vauxhall says 2025 so we'll have to see
Al kinatara is kewl, but I loved the old Opel Kadette suede effect , Black with coloured stiching,I know there is a name for it, it was a great comfortable hard-waring material from the seventies...

I always like the Opel Manta and almost bought one in 1970s. Why not reproduce it into an electric drive?
Tricky for an OEM to do, but this proves that a conversion could work.

My 1.8s Berlinetta Coupe, only had 90 hp, minimal these days, and it was heavy, but fast, (not compared to the 2.0 injected Manta), but fast enough for me, over took 4 cars in one go on my way to Newcastlle Co Down from Belfast, and had it up to to 110 (speedo reading) on the way back on the long bumpy strait from Newcastle alongside water to where ever??, my compatriate was screaming, but I was confident in the car and my skill as a driver, 147hp is more that enough for any normal driver!!! I love cars and HP, but, there are only a few that can handle it... My question is, WHEN we are all gonna be forced to go ELECTRIC, where are we gonna get it from???, the National grid will NOT cope with US ALL pluging in!!!! I guess the Gov didn't think about that, cause they are only interested in votes and getting in the next time!

I like the car but how they represented the car, it looked like a car that opel them selfe made a prototype of and was thinking of putting out to the public or something with the commersial, if i now understand this right this is someones private project and mass produse this and sell is not a option?
This was a project done by Opel. It was to be used as a marketing tool, but when Opel revealed it, there was a lot of interest from the public to buy one. Sadly, it's not so easy for Opel to do such a thing with the existing regulations, but it could help others do it privately.

Such a shame, that back in the days (when it was introduced) they failed to mention, that this will never be in production. There was a serious backlash on them when it turned out. Shame on you Opel!

The 70s Manta was great , and the model in early 80s too, a great sports car! We have waited 40 years and This electric version is simply fantastic, sportive, slim design with s blink inthe 70s. A very big mistake if the don t put it into the market!
The Manta name will return, but not in this form sadly.

I used to work for the Silly Service and a phrase comes to mind, I won't mention it, but just to say IF we are all forced to drive electric cars, and it will happen!!! U think things are expensive now, when petroleum is banned, watch the prices rise on everything includng essentials, my advice, if you can afford it, I can't, I'm F..... get you Photovolataic Cells in now and you better have a house that is South facing, front or preferabbly rear, rear is preferrable because the dirtbags WILL steal them off your roof, if they can see them on the front, and probably abuse your Family too - worst case scenario, but it WILL happen, trust me, dirtbags do not care about religion or LAWS!!!!
