Introducing the all-new Vauxhall or Opel Astra!
Mat’s got his hands on Vauxhall’s/Opel's new family-friendly hatchback and he’s about to see if it has what it takes to compete with competitors such as the Peugeot 308!
For starters, it more than looks the part! The new Astra rolls up with a totally redesigned bumper and grille, coupled with a nice crease in the bonnet to give it a more sporty look. Around the back, there’s a smart integrated light design along with a bootlip spoiler. It’s also possible to get a contrasting roof colour with certain trims!
On the inside, the Astra is pretty smart, although the design doesn’t live up to the quality of the exterior. The build quality is pretty solid, and thankfully it comes with a number of physical buttons for the climate control. It’s possible to get a large infotainment screen, too, although the system isn’t exactly the best. Thankfully though it does come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto!
There are a number of petrol and diesel engines to choose from, along with a plug-in hybrid! The latter delivers the most power, with a 1.6-litre petrol engine and electric motor combining to deliver 180hp.
The range kicks off from around £24,000, but is it worth it? You’ll need to stick with Mat to see for yourself!

The infotainment system in this Astra is called the Pure Panel, which was only supposed to be offered on the base trim. Mid and high spec trim were supposed to come with the Pure Panel Pro, which is probably the version Matt refers to. The Pure Panel Pro doesn't have the piano black plastics, but a nice glass panel. However, the production of the Pure Panel Pro had to be moved from Ukraine to (if I remember it correctly), India, which wasn't ready in time. That's the reason why all models currently come with the regular Pure Panel, and the Pure Panel Pro has been removed from the pricing list.
Also, funny to see how "White Jade" is the standard colour for the Vauxhall version. The Opel version offers the colour of the car in this video, "Amber Yellow", as standard, and white is an optional extra.

      Looks awful though doesn't it?
Quite a few manufacturer's are doing this 'slab' look at the moment and its just a quick, chest cop out.
Absolutely no design flair in that what's so ever, they've literally just stuck a big screen in.
Wonder how bad the screen reflections are on these screens, especially with no cowling on top.

@@fastra3621 no doubt that Pure Panel Pro will look much better, but... I sat in one few days ago and I can say that Pure Panel looks ok when you're behind the wheel... it's definitely much better looking than that "board" Golf 8 have.... its piano black bezels are far uglier, these in Astra are much less noticeable. and the interior is minimalistic, but it doesn't feel dull, or sterile! in fact... as a person that downright despised every Opel model since 1975 (it started with the neighboring kid rivalry and was "helped" by Opel models in las t25-30 years 😋), I was rather surprised... in a pleasant and good way

Very high Peugeot 308 content, with some Vauxhall and Astra plastic labels stuck on.
I love the externals, especially the nose, but as the driver, I'd be opting for something Peugeot iCockpit because that's what I'd be looking at the most. I fell in love with iCockpit from the very start! (Plus, I doubt that Vauxhalls will be making any inroads to Australian imports).

The last two generations have kinda just existed without being anything to get worked up about. Even the interior finally looks contemporary with its peers, apart from that tightwad screen surround. I'd hope buyer feedback sees them switch to the single panel for the top ICE/Hybrid models, too.

Top marks for the exterior! One of the best looking new hatchbacks in my opinion, the styling is not too much and not too little and that black Chevrolet style grill suits it perfectly. They could’ve done a lot better inside though, there’s no need for so many screens. I don’t get that with cars these days, there should just be one for infotainment and one for the dials (or even just traditional dials would be good 😅). We ordered the GS Line turbo 130 and we didn't get the noises you complained about so again maybe thats your test car ? On the hire car on Motorway journeys we were getting 58 mpg as long as we kept the speed just below 70 mph (68) which we thought was impressive. Its not as well tuned as the Civic's 1L VTEC Turbocharged engine (which outputs 129bhp being a 1L!) but I mean its good performance in daily life that you require like no struggles in overtaking I am sure, but civic is quite a bit of fun to drive being a family hatchback, short-throw 6 speed manual and the low sitting position gives it that sporty driving experience. Also comes standard with adaptive cruise control, lane assist and all the modern features. If you want a more sports inspired daily, I think civic is a perfect choice (focus is also for that, but civic is another very good choice to keep in mind!) I had the new Opel Corsa rented over Christmas. 5-speed manual. It had the 360 cameras seen on that Astra. The reverse camera and the parking sensors made parking in tight spaces a doddle and the sensors saved me from backing into a pole that I couldn't see out the blind spot at the back or through the reverse camera. I used the android auto for navigation to get to an unfamiliar destination. The steering and seats had the same adjustments as that Astra. My favourite features were the windscreen wipers' and lights' auto settings. Once the lights were set to auto I didn't have to worry about when to change from dips to full beam and vice versa. I didn't like the centre console storage area position as my elbow tended to bump off it until I got used to driving it but the storage itself was useful. Opel (as they're called outside the UK) isn't a brand I'd consider buying myself but I did like some of the features.

5:56 oh come on, Octavia is a gigantic car compared to this. Over 30cm longer!

@@kaankkaraman nope. Scala is exact same length and size as Astra. Clio is exact same size as Skoda Fabia (both have estate and regular versions). Just Google their size if you are not sure.

Vauxhall have always made good looking cars.
