Every vintage conn I have ever played, saxophones or my limited experience with brass, has looked like a dog, but has been the best playing and best sounding of its instrument type. I absolutely love them

I've always loved getting my lips on Conn tubas, especially the monumental 24J. They're so open, with so little resistance, and beautiful power tone. I never could afford one when I was in school, but any time I found one tucked away in permanent storage, I'd haul it out and drive the director crazy racking up refurbishment bills with the local instrument shops.
The reverse lead pipe actually makes a lot of sense for a swappable tuning slide, because that way when you set the slide down to switch it, it doesn't get grease on everything.
That is a beautiful instrument. In high school many years ago I played a Conn Connstellation. Later my son played that trumpet in high school. That trumpet is long gone, but I am still using the mouthpiece that came with it when I perform with the various orchestras and bands with which I now play, regardless of which of my three trumpets I choose to play.
Charles G. Conn not only built a musical instrument business, he also was a newspaper man, a politician (Mayor of Elkhart and a US Representative) and, like Eli Lilly of pharma fame, a Civil War officer in the Union Army.

I may have missed your review of the Selmer radial trumpet - I seem to remember you acquired one from somewhere. I wonder if you find the radial trumpet providing significant back pressure...one of my instructors once said playing my Selmer radial was like sucking on a rock. While I've never known quite what to make of that comment, I've grown in my own appreciation of the Selmer radial over the years. Thanks much for all your videos.
I have neglected your channel for almost a year but now this popped up, and man you look healthy! Time to set up a brass boyband! :)
I suspect having the original mouthpiece that came with the horn is what made all the difference. Remember the machining abilities back then had no capabilities for standardization like we have today. This means the old horns of long ago were made to match to their individual mouthpiece relievers and mouthpieces. Identical parts would have large variation between each other making one horn's mouthpiece be a lousy match for another identical model horn.

As I am watching this video for the sixth time I am literally holding my very own Conn Q error Cornet. And (unfortunately for all of us) as usual I find that indeed I must respectfully. wholeheartedly/ completely AGREE with you!
Let me propose a new direction in your architectural life: Why do you not invest in a complete brass instrument repair shop (for the tools not as a visited -- and learn how to repair/restore your/our most trusted and cherished warped, bent and twisted brass instruments by yourself. JEEPERS, this way you might have been able to repair the beautiful new trombone you ker-plopped on the floor some years ago.
It would probably be easier and more intuitive to master than the craft rather than that of a master the bassoon or oboe repairman overall fine tuning a violin, viola or cello sound post.
I myself have my equivalent of my “Wall of Many Things” but you have only only had a best fatal run-in with the double bell euphonium. I too had/have on of those but when I looked closer I possessed Three of those bloomin’ instrument-without a cause -- must have had twins. But unlike the one you demoed for us a couple of years ago, all three of my distortions have their original and well preserved cases.
I know that you would be a terrific repair man. Anyone that is successfully rebuilding/restoring a full wind driven pipe organ can not be all that bad.
But I also took the Challenge and learned to play virtually any instrument you can name: whether it be woidwind strings or keyboard. European, or Middle Eastern, South Indian, African and native American as well as the Chinese instrumented never said I was any good with them but I know how and why each key is placed where it is and the quirks of tiny tiny springs and screws that require an electron microscope to reassemble.
PS I do not play electronic musical instruments.
But from age 7-17 I studied the accordion with a goal of one day becoming a famous jazz accordionist like Art vanDamme. Art died at age 90. I personally studied under The Great Charles Nunzio. He died at the age of 97. I for one have plans to live to 120 years with most of my facilities intact as was the case of Moses.
My accordion career dropped dead when Rock N’ Roll came into being and the Moog Synthesizer torpedoed the accordion. Forever (unlike in Europe). I passed an exciting career waiting tables and playing the acvordion and I read divided to pursue medicine as a lifetime career.
Did I hear the words “Accordion!?” an old joke: “Welcomd to Heaven; here is your harp” and “Welcome to hell: here is your accordion!”
One day I mistakenly
left my Petosa and Hohner accordion on the back seat of my car. Fearing the worst, I raced back to my unlocked car but by then some mean person had already smashed the rear windoeme. I looked into the back seat of my car. Someone had left THEIR accordion likewise on the rear seat right next to my accordion.
How many accordionists does it take to unscrew a burnt out ought bulb? The answer is five persons. One to hold unto the bulb, and the other four men to rotated the step ladder counterclockwise.
At any rate, I hope to one day see you, if not here then in the Life to come.

I have this cornet in silver, not nearly in as good condition. Came with everything including 2 mouthpieces.

Sounds good from the bit at the end of the video. I can see why you fell in love with it. Nothing quite matches the beautiful yellow luster of actual gold, even if my preference leans towards silver plated trumpets. I like the slightly more muted, subtle tone compared to the brashness of most yellow brass trumpets, so I'm guessing that, aside from the usual tonal difference that you get from a cornet, that they've probably also used gold brass for a slightly darker tone in the sound.

Where can I get a cow peeler from?
Have you reviewed a Conn Wonder Cornet from the 1920s? I have my grandfather’s cornet, with the original mouthpieces and case (just had it cleaned and some minor repairs, so the case handle has been replaced). Because it’s a family instrument, I’m not keen to part with it, but I have seen some on ebay. Mine is sort of a rarity, because, like the Conn-quorer you feature in this video, it plays in B-flat or A, but all you do is pull out the large slide (it’s often confused as the main tuning slide, but that isn’t its primary purpose), and then a series of levers pulls the valve slides out. If you’re interested, I can send pictures, but you should be able to find it online if you search for Conn Wonder.

Where can I get a piccolo trombone nowadays?

Ouch! What happened? I was hoping to hear some talk about why it is different and better. I see some odd routing of tubing on it. Please follow up with a longer in=depth video. ...And in general, if you make more videos at some point, please try to include more playing so we can hear these instruments, and more explanations of why these old instruments are special or different. I always feel like I always want more with your videos. Otherwise, thank you! I love your channel.
