    Even since I got my BMW 335i M-Sport Coupe, I have been looking for an N55 engine. Unfortunately, the prices went up almost 50% since I got the car and after not being able to find anything for a reasonable price with less than 100k miles, I found a broken BMW N55 engine for sale locally. I pulled the trigger on it and the rebuild project is on the way! Hope you join me on this BMW N55 engine rebuild journey.

    Thank you for this series, I will be rebuilding my N55 this winter (it pulled a cylinder head right out of the block)
    What were the differences between the X5 motor and 335i motor? If I do have to replace mine, it says there is a “to 12/10” N55 and a “From 01/11” N55, but I cant tell the difference. If I do have to swap mine, I’d like one from a later car but unsure if it will work.

    Do you if you could use a n55 f-series long block and bolt on your e-series parts. Is there any difference between the to blocks and heads?

    Awesome work mate. Does your car have an oil cooler? Not sure if it makes a difference but I have lost 2 bearings on start up after having the engine disassembled. Not sure if these engine get an air lock or something in the oil system when thermostat opens. I did all the gaskets including oil filter housing on a very low km second hand engine. Engine was running perfectly when removed from donor car. Oil pan off all looked perfect. No heat or scorching and engine was as clean as a whistle. Picked up number one rod bearing while idling in the shop - inspection revealed oil starvation as cause - progressively worse from #1 - 2. 3,4,5 and 6 looked perfect. Crank looked OK as rod did not actually spin. Shop replaced all bearings with std size. It spun number 1 again within 20km. I currently have a dispute with the shop over their workmanship as they are not wanting to take any responsibility at all. I don know if they primed the oil system or what. I do know that on the first instance they flushed oil cooler but did not fill it with oil prior to reinstall. It would appear that it locked up when thermostat opened up. Now a rebuild is required. BMW = :(

      That sucks, sorry to hear! Yes, this car has the additional oil cooler, but I'm not at the stage of putting the engine back in yet. I hope I don't run into those issues after the job as done as it's been a ton of work so far!

    I’ve been looking forward to this video. For $350 you don’t have much to lose. BTW where did you get the balls and the skills to attempt to rebuild a BMW engine?

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  Před 3 lety +2

      I've always been a tinkered and liked taking things apart, (hopefully) fixing and putting them back together. Cars have been a perfect outlet for that and what's better than attempting pretty much the hardest job you can do on a car. Appreciate you watching!

    I assume you could not grind the journal? These engine spin Rod Bearings like they are free. I have spun 3 of them so far...

      I don’t know a good machinist to do this and one place I called told me ‘I couldn’t afford it’. So I ended up getting a used one and installing that now. Video should be out in a few days.

      @SimpleCarGuy  Před 3 lety +2

      No, it’s more of a rebuild project rather than an upgrade. If you have suggestions of things I can do in the garage and don’t require a machine shop, I’d definitely be interested in hearing.

    How come this is a closed deck ? Weren't N55 open deck engines ? This looked like a closed deck. I may be wrong

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  Před 3 lety +2

      I think you were looking at the gasket and not the block itself and that’s why it looks like that. It is, indeed, an open deck engine.

    This will sound weird, but is it normal for it to sound like it has a slight knock? I know how dumb that sounds, but every video I see of an N55, They sound like they have a knock to me, But they all seem to be "fine"

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  Před 2 lety +1

      You might be hearing the high pressure fuel system (likely injectors) making that ticking noise. That’s completely normal on most direct injected engines.

    • @Anthony-qh1xv

      @@SimpleCarGuy ok thank you! Is it normal for it to more easy for me to hear while under the car? Thanks!!

    What causes the N55 to get spun rod? I thought these were good engines.

    • @mammutit
      @mammutit Před 3 lety +1

      years of neglect and or overtuning and constant hard driving with or without cold engine. there is nothing wrong the N55, but by the time any bmw has turned 10 years old at least 10 kids have revved the shit out of it.

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  Před 3 lety +3

      You're not wrong! N55 is a decent enough engine, but these cars are not driven lightly. BMW's 15k mile oil change schedule didn't help either.
