Portal 2 Final Boss Medley for two pianos | arr. FiveNineSquared

- !! SPOILERS AHEAD !!
A two-piano arrangement of the music that plays during the final boss battle against Wheatley in the video game Portal 2. This consists of two pieces, "Bombs for Throwing at You" (also "Four Part Plan") and "Your Precious Moon" (sometimes known as "Shoot the Moon"). I took liberties in arranging the mechanical sections (by completely re-writing them).
The climatic boss fight in Portal 2 - as the imminent complete annihilation of Aperture, with all its long and tedious efforts, rests on you, the player, you can't help but feel under immense pressure. This is greatly amplified by these themes, which outline both the player's and Wheatley's struggles through the fight.
The use of leitmotifs in "Bombs for Throwing at You" shows the struggles of Wheatley as he tries to retain control over himself and the facility. At first, we're presented with a direct reference to "Omg, What Has He Done?", reminding us of the destruction he's caused to Aperture. Then, we're thrown into a faster, more intense section as the fight starts. What I'll refer to as the "Mainframe" motif is shown here (it appears first in "You Know Her?"). It's a well-supported theory that the mainframe is what causes Wheatley and GLaDOS to become overwhelmed with power, so this motif shows how the mainframe takes over Wheatley's will. Next, the arpeggios used frequently throughout the game appear. Some have taken this to be GLaDOS' leitmotif, though I sort of see it as the "Aperture Science" motif as arpeggios are present in nearly all tracks in the game. This is over the chord progression seen in "I AM NOT A MORON!". Later, we're also presented with the Wheatley motif present in said track, overlayed on top of the arpeggios. I see this as Wheatley fighting to fix the facility, but in the other view, it can show GLaDOS and Wheatley vying for control of the crumbling Centre (the slight offset of the Wheatley motif can also show Wheatley's weakness, in that he's trapped within the Mainframe's control). I could say so much more about this piece, but this is getting hecking long so i'll stop
I may do an analysis on BfTaY, if I have the time.
One more thing to note is that both "Don't Do It" and "Reconstructing More Science" are both featured in "Your Precious Moon". The former, a callback to when you had to push the button to transfer Wheatley into the Mainframe, and the second, is in a way the "Main Theme" of the game, so it's fitting to place it in the ending sequence.
If you are an older follower of me on Musescore you'd probably find this sort of familiar - that's because I made an arrangement in the same vein as this before, around 2016. I re-made the arrangement again to look less like a pile of garbage.

"Suddenly, ragtime!"
when does it say?
@@xeanderman6688 in the sheet music, just look closely
1:45
sounds good
I never realized how well this song would go on a piano!
“Suddenly, ragtime!” Haha, that was awesome.
Ive always been upset. Id always only seen covers of Reconstructing More Science, Cara Mia Addio, Want You Gone and sometimes Turret Wife Serenade. As my favourite game and first hyperfixation, I was upset noone paid attention to the REST of the ost.
Until I found both this and your arrangement of I Am Not A Moron. Finally, someone had done these songs justice. And I'm in love with how you've arranged them
My goal with arrangements is to not repeat what others've already done before, for precisely this reason. Thanks!
Theres also an orchestral cover of the ost
main them and variations are amazing portal 2 has so much good music and its always those 3 that get covers
I cant decide if this arrangement would be called 'Your Precious Plan' or 'Bombs For Throwing at the Moon'
I titled the files “Bombs For Throwing At Your Precious Moon” actually
Four part Moons for throwing at your precious bombs

_PART SIX! NUKE BLACK MESA!_
Also, 7:10 in particular hit me in the face.
Good plan.
that would be part six, as the booby trapped stalemate button was part five. wheatley announces this himself.
PART 7!
More Test subjects...
I'm just getting tired of this awful itch...

Revenge is best served on two pianos!
Dangit now I want to play Portal 2 again...
Also thanks for all the interesting facts in the description! I never realized how those songs used the same motif
Portal 2 is one of those games I keep replaying annually. Sometimes I boot up some random workshop tests to try out. After recording this I also wanted to replay the entire game again haha
Mike Morasky’s writing for the OST actually goes very deep. He uses leitmotifs very subtly sometimes and each one carries some sort of importance (take for instance the way he wrote “Music of the Spheres”-the music heard when entering 1950s Aperture, and contrasted it with “Music of the Spheres 2”-heard in 1980s Aperture. The former uses more organic instruments, while the latter uses synths heavily. This can show how Aperture had shifted from being a prestigious human-run company to a lower-budget robot operated company). I had to do some research to get some of the info I wrote in the description tbh
Despite not playing the game for years, I can recite every line from the final battle, just from listening to this song. 💕
My god, I can't describe how much I love this piece! I also really enjoyed reading your analysis, I can't help but get hyped up about stuff like this. Great work!
Thanks! It was also quite fun analysing the music and speculating what the motifs meant in context.
1:45 best part
Yes.
I love it 2, but I am attached to 5:10
best part Portal 3: the cowboy bar fight
Poor Wheatley, he was such a cute little guy and then the euphoria and all that stuff corrupted him and he turned into a monster.
"This is the part where I kill you."
*Objective: Survive*
Haha I luv the halo reach reference
Yo, 6:18 matches so well with the video!
Honestly, I didn’t get the ragtime at first, but it adds so much to what can be considered Wheatley’s themes. This is so good and epic, expanding on melodies you can just barely hear in the original. Thank you so much for this masterpiece!
Thanks!
I timed the explosion to hit right at that spot, but in the video editor, not in-game. It's not very impressive haha
@@FiveNineSquared I still think it’s genius : )
Honestly, I listen to this more than the original, it’s so good! ^_^
Hearing this on the piano really helps you define the different parts from each other, and hear how over time the two parts start fighting against each other to resemble Wheatley fighting back against the central mainframe.
Thanks! Though I did exaggerate this a lot (I added a few lines that weren't there originally to add interest).
This is a work of art. I can’t believe more people haven’t seen this.

This needs more hella views
I keep wanting to learn piano to play this but every time I reach the end I'm reminded of how difficult it would really be
screw it. i'm gonna learn piano

dunno if you'll ever see this, but this is really really good. great job. I especially love the Your Precious Moon part, but this is just a great song. thanks so much for making it, honestly!
I got goosebumps at The Exile
Fantastic!
Thank you!
This is amazing! Well done!!
Thanks!
Just awesome , dude , i really GLaD somebody actually made piano sheets of this kind of hardness , my thousands of thanks to you !
10/10 you did an amazing job on this
Thanks!
More like 999999999999999999 etc./10
The inclusion of parts of Bots Build Bots (my favorite ost) at 3:22 makes this piece perfect. Well done!
Bombs For Throwing At You on piano?! How and why does this sound good? :D I always thought was waaa-aaaa-aaay too chaotic to perform on anything like piano. Somehow, though, you managed to sacrifice a bit of the chaos in for absolute amazingness holy what
Also, this sounds a lot like some Undertale song.
Bonetrousle, with a hint of that ironically jazzy tone that I always associate with Undertale, maybe some Megalo Strike Back? perhaps some Pokémon R/G/B/Y Champion theme?
Thanks! Tbf most of this will probably involve a lot of chaos on the piano if you actually played it, so not much has been lost :P
Considering most of my early arranging experience was literally only stuff from Undertale, I wouldn't doubt some of that sneaked into this.
*How the hell did you manage to fit the laser dance motif in there wtf*
This is amazingly put together!
I got to admit this this dude has some skills
I like piano covers. This was my favourite part of the game. Finding this was like finding the holy grail.
Amazing! The excellently written transcription paired with a beautiful presentation makes this a beautiful video! The notes send chills down my spine. They are just that great!
Listening to this again I finally read the description... very good analysis! If you're still interested in doing the longer analysis, it would be great seeing it! I realize this is a 3 and half year old video though, so no problem if you don't do it.
This thing is honestly such a legendary arrangement
Thanks now every time i play tf2 and am in a epic battle ,i will play this in my head
This is amazing, thanks!
Brilliant arrangement.
I wonder how strong the control core body must be to be able to withstand 6 explosions with massive corrosion and decay splitting the 6 in half.
I might be really late, but I love how you inserted the light motif into the part at 7:24 it's something you don't hear in the original score and it adds so much
Holy hell that is amazing. I didn't think making a piano version of this song was possible, let alone such an amazingly composed one. You are incredible!!! Thank you so much for this!!!
No but seriously, I absolutely adore what you did to this track. I keep coming back to it.
Glad you liked it so much haha
This is literally so cool
Are you going to make more Portal 2 arrangements? I used yours to make an orchestra with them. But Im also working on own arrangements like one of my personal favorites "don't do it" "I saw a deer today". But im curious if you are going to make new ones. I really like how you use different leitmotifs that are heard trough out the game and how you build different play styles and chords into it and not only try to get the notes right. You straight up turn into an arrangment.
Thank you for the compliments! Well, I’m not _not_ open to doing portal stuff, but for now I don’t really have anything from it I’m planning to arrange.
@@FiveNineSquared I mean since you build reconstructing sience and cara mia into bombs for throwing at you, you could if you're open to it, arrange them by chance. Maybe you could help me a little if that is ok for you?
I think there’s quite a lot of sheets for both of those pieces you mentioned actually. Specifically Cara Mia. I’ll think about doing an arrangement of Reconstructing Science.
@@FiveNineSquared That would be really awesome, what would be also really cool if you ever do a piece to "the part where he kills you", just if you feel like doing that. I might do one to that
Damn nice arrangement
Phase 3 has hints of bots build bots in it that I never heard in game
This sounds really good, wish I could read it
Brilliant piece!
Very nice.
This song being this happy is so cursed
(core 1) SPACE I WANNA GO TO SPACE. (Wheatley) WE ARE NOT GOING TO SPACE.
tracks: bombs for throwing at you.
3:21 after arranging bots build bots, I feel like these notes patterns are very similar to ones found in that piece. Overall bombs for throwing and your precious moon seem to recall the most motifs
That section wasn't part of the original music by the way. You're correct that I referenced Bots Build Bots for it though.
the best part is how beautiful it sounds on piano
Check it out! I’m a bloody musical genius now! _alright, so that’s a G… what are these little dots and arrows? ah, whatever_ (plays the worst fucking music you've ever heard)
I have no idea what I’m playing! But I can find out! Oh, right, bombs-
This is nostalgic
suuuuuudenly raaaaaaaagtiiiiime
It didn't occur to me why a lot of people specifically pointed out this line from the score until you wrote it out like that LOL
And it's funny because I've replayed the musical countless times and I didn't make the link still. I didn't even intend for the reference there!
Robang59² oh lol
I'M WAITING FOR MORE OF PORTAL 2 STUFF
So cool
Very interesting.
2020's ending song
hehehe, heard the music million times , but this one is much more soothing and gentle. 🌸🌸💖💜
Yes
The hijacking part has a letimotif of YOUR PRECIOUS MOON On part 2 of the letimotif of the piano.
weirdly, some parts of this remind me of U.N. Owen was Her from that one Touhou game
Can you give download of Piano version of Your Precious Moon?
Welcome *TO MY LAIR*
I wish you could put portals on wheatley s shields
how do you recognize the notes?
did they make a sheet for this?
By ear! It isn't that hard once you've gotten a lot of practice.
Nah, they never made official sheet music (unfortunately), but it's because the soundtrack isn't orchestrated for any sort of ensem.

I love this so much!
Video seems to be really out-of-sync tho.
Thanks! The OST version of the track is actually different from the one that plays in-game, because the music changes depending on what stage of the fight you're in. So for example the first part actually loops until Wheatley finishes his monologue. It wasn't possible to sync some parts nicely because the playthrough I recorded was either too short or too long for the specific part of the music.
@@FiveNineSquared Yep, I do understand why it is out of sync, there's no your fault in this. Also, this sounds even better if you replace second (I think it was second one) piano with organ imo.
True, it would make more of a distinction between the two players I guess. You can still try to play this with an organ and piano combo though!
kinda reminds me of touhou a little bit

This has aged...poorly.
