Cool.
This thing can be used for TimeMachine backup for a couple of Mac’s.
Or use 1 drive for TimeMachine & the 2nd for file/folder transfers.
It’s as fast the Samsung T7.
It’s Not as fast for use as an external hard drive though like the Acasis tool free TBU-401E Thunderbolt4 enclosure using Thunderbolt ports & cables.
I like the idea using it for
Drive1-TimeMachine &
Drive2-files/folder transfer.
Since they are the PCIe NVMe Gen.4 M.2 SSD compatible.
Thanks for sharing this.
Yes, you can use it for that and it has a few really good uses. It's not for everybody but an option out there and I really like the build quality so far.
I bought Yottamaster Dual-Bay M.e NVMe Enclosure for Prime Day 25 euros and i bought 2 Crucial ssd 1TB P5 and P3plus 2TB and im very happy with Speed test, the P5 960 per second and the P3plus 898 mer second. Thanks for the review
@Craig Neidel.
Thanks for sharing the info. Yes, for the money they are nice and I like the build quality of the device for sure. That will provide you with quite a bit of good storage.
You don't need to buy top tier SSD for enclosing gen 3 is plenty because u will be bottlenecked by the USB 3.2 gen 2 or 1 whichever u have the more expensive version is thunderbolt 4 case which gets you closer to max speed from nvme.
Yes, you don't need the top tier SSDs on a 10 Gbps enclosure as you will only see about 800 to 1000 MB/s.
Great video. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for feedback.
I found this on Amazon among the first few results and wasn't too sure because I've never heard of Yottamaster before (I think it's referring to Yottabytes by the way, which is 1000 Exabytes which is 1000 Petabytes, which is 1000 Terabytes lol. Basically it's a crap load of storage). Good to see it's actually pretty decent, I'm in the process of replacing my old iMac with a new Mac Mini M2 Pro set up and wanted to replace as much of my external spinning disk storage with SSD as I could. Given how cheap NVME drives are now even compared to the much slower and larger 2.5" things I thought why not get an enclosure that could handle more than one of the things. It's kind of a shame it doesn't combine them with some kind of hardware RAID with a single connector, though for that I'd expect to be paying quite a bit more. I could sacrifice two ports and RAID them in Mac OS I guess. I'll want to use it as my media drive. My iTunes library is like 3.5TB thanks to all my Blu-Ray rips from the days before streaming was a thing haha. I'd want to RAID 1 it so it's copied to both drives at the same time.
Thanks for the info and good luck with everything. The enclosure is fairly inexpensive and not bad for the price. There are better enclosures out there but they will cost quite a bit more. I do wish you can use this in raid too, but in the end you need to use 2 different cables with this one so it's not really an option on this unless you have both connected at the same time. So not sure how that would even work with built in Mac Raid if you raided that way. But, if you want two different SSDS completely isolated from each other then this is a good option. In some cases that is not a bad idea because if people mess up raid (pull the wrong failed drive they can really cause issues), they can be in a bad place. So this is a good option to keep the data isolated and safe and it's basically like having 2 enclosures built into a single chassis.
Please look at the Sonnet Echo 20 looks like a great accessory with all those ports plus an SSD slot.
I will take a look.
Hey Craig, thanks for the video. Really cool enclosure! Yeah I just noticed your iMac I think is cool I love the navy color. Maybe is my favorite color navy blue. Anyway, hope you’re staying cool it was 119° the other day here in Phoenix and I think we’re on our 23rd day above 110 we’ve already broken record it’s brutal. now come October we’re going to get seven months of absolutely gorgeous weather all through the winter time. Where are you located? Thanks again.
Yes, these are very nice for the money. I heard it's very hot out in Phoenix. I'm in the midwest and it's even getting a bit hotter hear but only in high 80s. Can't imagine 110.
Perhaps the APFS support combining multiple physical disk into a single volume. I managed to add an extra volume to an external SSD which Time Machine is running on, I don't even have to dismount/eject the Time Machine drive while adding the volume, the newly created volume is immediately usable, WOW.
I think you can do that and I'll maybe give that a try. But, right now I use both drives independently so didn't need to combine the space into a single volume. Thanks for sharing and for watching.
Great presentation,is it good though for use with both Macos and Windows?keep up the good work
If you format drives as exfat it should work on both fine.
Thanks for that! One question - i am not that into ssds and enclosures. Is the speed capped because of the nvme, the enclosure or the cable? It says up to 10Gbits which would be about 10000 Mb/s if im correct you only get 1/10 of that. I don’t need to full 10Gbits but between 5-7 would be nice. Do i need a faster cable? better nvmes or is the enclosure the limiting factor?
You are getting the bit and bytes wrong. You need to divide 10 Gbps by 8 for that conversion. So 10,000 / 8 = 1,250 MB/s and that is before the overhead of the enclosure or cable. So expect about 800 to 1000 MB/s in most cases. I hope this helps.
i might consider it for 2 reasons, one dedicated to mac backup machine, one for storing data, currently my external drive has one major issue, when i leave my imac on 24/7 but put it to sleep at night, i get random disconnects and they say drive not ejected properly, and i can't eject what is not visible so i just unplug it and plug it back since i cant eject it after that or idk the orther method, if drive is visible i can eject if not i cant thats what i know.ill try to shut down my desktop daily to attempt to solve the issue even though it is a pain in the ass to. but in all honestly i only got external drive because i had poor storage 256gb, proba lly did not need it but when i buy imac pro or macbook pro i will get 512 to 1tb option and also buy icloud storage because i dislike the machine backup or external ssd/nvme crashes. and its not expesnive imo, right now 200gb icloud is 3 euro per month, honestly that for me is more than enoigh because i look at my current use and i don't go past that even externally where i can easy remove the data, reason i do not is i have installed apps that take extra space but not icloud space,
I always say get what is best for you. This is just a product showcase.
Do you have a link to that macbook pro stand that you are using?
It should be in this video's description since I talked about it in this video - czcams.com/video/0J4IpCb2vwE/video.html
Can you do video on best options for Mac mini drive enclosures for 4 drive units - or maybe hub
If I can find any. Those are normally raided enclosures.
You do have very unique videos I really like it for some crazy reason I like these external drives to have a bunch of them and I don’t even really need them. I am working on putting together a whole new back up program for my home computer set up I may go with an hours I’m just not sure yet actually before I invest in SNL Jean as I think I’m going to just use all of the drives I have because I got several 2 TB drive that are brand new and they’re nice you know I got some Samsung’s brand new ones I’ve got some Sandisc drives so I think I’m gonna train you, so I’ve got first
Thanks for the nice words and the comments. Yes, use what you have first and not reason to spend more than you need to. Thanks.
Are those activity lights on the front? I am looking for a solution like this but I find none of the 2 bay NVMe enclosures seems to have bay specific activity lights.
Yes, they have little blue activity lights for each drive.
Wonder if you set up a software raid 0 on it with the two ports if you get close to 1500/1400...
I have not tested that so I'm not sure. For most this should be fast enough even for 4k editing and I tested that and it worked great.
There is a version of the same dual bay enclosure (from either Yottamaster or Orico...they seems to use the same OEM) that only require a single cable to access both SSD, instead of two separate cables as what was shown here. That's a better option, IMO
Not sure if it's the same one if it needs a single cable. The internals would have to be much different.
Id be interested if you could find out which one that was?
I'll let you know if I find anything out but so far I just tested the one in the video.
Is it possible to access both ssds in it at the ame time? Or u have to have 2 drives and 2 cables?
You would need both cables.
Could be very handy for a MacBook. Craig, if you get a chance, can you do a full review on the OWC Express 4M2. TIA
I'll take a look and thanks for watching.
@@craigneidel Thank You!
Thanks.
nice video
Thanks for the comment and for watching.
wonder if there is an encloser with nvme and sd card reader and cheap like this.
I did videos on hubs with those check out channel
Have you tried encrypting the disk using the standard APFS encryption via Disk Utility? I've noticed significant speed decreases (-50%) for my USB-C SSDs if I directly connect them to a port of an Apple Silicon machine. Oddly enough, not so when the USB-C drive is first connected to an external Thunderbolt 3 dock. 🤔
Yes, you will get slower speeds when using the APFS encryption but I'm not sure that is due to the enclosure. I have not seen what you are describing though.
@@craigneidel The slightly slower speeds with encryption are obviously acceptable.
But the difference is night and day if the drive is connected directly via USB-C to a Mac or while taking a detour to connect the same USB-C drive (!) first to a Thunderbolt hub which is connected to the Apple Silicon Mac.
I am not talking about the ~5% toll for using encryption. I am talking about the 50% drop when using it straight via USB, which isn't occuring when first connected via TB.
@@nym49 Ok, I have not tested encrypted APFS and only APFS so I didn't see that. That is good to know and if anybody else sees this then you can post it here. I'm not sure why it would be faster using a Hub vs. direct connection since that is normally opposite of what we normally see.
It would be interesting if they also have a 4 or 5 bay enclosure. then the possibility of RAID Software
You can find multi Bay enclosures with raid but they are normally super expensive and not worth it. I do wish this company would make one. Thanks.
i dont understand the use of a dual bay if either way you have to plug to clables? or am I understanding wrong... maybe eif they were raided or accessible from single cable... otherwise why not to get to small enclosures and have the freedom to move things around ?
I use it so that I have 2 different drives to back up to for various reasons. I can backup to one and then move the copy to the other with a script and have 2 backups of all my data quickly.
Hi Bro,
Have you tried it to connect with any phone or Tab? I have tried one orico enclosure with 2TB to my Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 and it doesn't detect.
I am a Mac channel so was testing on computers. It works good on Mac andd PC. How are you formatting drive and what SSD are you using as that could matter when trying to connect to Android.
Thanks I've got 5nvme slots on board my PC motherboard
Ok, thank you would not need this.
I really like your videos, but I just figured out where the Super Dave Osborne vibe comes from!!
Ok, glad you like them.
Good video. Looks like you would need two cables (one for each drive) to be connected to the PC to access both drives. Can't access both drives with a single cable connection. Am I correct?
That is correct
@@craigneidel Thanks. Basically, you can achieve the same by having two separate enclosures and placing/strapping them side by side. The only advantage is that this double enclosure is cheaper than having 2 individual enclosures. 😃
I carry it around and backup dual copies of important data. I also then don't need to worry about a raid issue deleting both since they are separate. I do have Raid enclosures but I use this differently.
I'm looking for a dual NVME M.2 drive enclosure but the speed of the Acasis enclosure ( like 2500 R/W ) . Is there such an enclosure without going with OWC's larger-sized offerings? Thanks for your videos. Always very timely and helpful.
I don't know of any yet but will let you know if I find one. Also why do you need 2800 MB/s speeds. What application will you be using it for? Just curious as 95 percent of people will be fine with 900 MB/s.
@@craigneidel I don't *NEED* 2800 MB/s but over the years the operating systems get bigger and slower and require faster machines to keep up with the bloated OS features. Of course, manufacturers have an incentive to bloat their software so they can sell newer machines. Getting the fastest today allows it to be tolerable 5 years from now on the same machine. Also my goal is to work off the external drive ( lots of Xcode work ) directly. Since my internal drive is ~5,000+ MG/s, it would be a really noticeable slowdown going to 900 MB/s. Plus Xcode is not the fastest software even on good machines.
@@bstevens9831ave to agree with you there. Apple silicon has really screwed the end user in upgradeability terms now, and as if that wasn’t enough, their storage upgrade costs are criminally extortionate!
Looking to get one or two external thunderbolt enclosures myself for a Mac Studio M1 Max I got a 25% discount on, and the Acasis models seem to get brought up a lot on CZcams. Waiting for a decent price before taking the plunge as have plenty of spare SSD’s since the cost dropped markedly.
I can't wait to see Acasis release a dual enclosure with the same or better specifications as their thunderbolt 40Gbps one.
I wish they would someday but we will see.
does it work for a gaming pc too ? cuz I edit on there as well
It could if you formatted it correctly as it's really just two normal external enclosures built into the one chassis.
Are both drives accessible with a single cable plugged in? I don’t think you mentioned anything about that?
I did say that you need two cables and it only comes with one. You can't access both drives and they are independent. It has some pros and cons but one pro is if one side broke the other is independent.
@@craigneideloh bummer, it sounded like you could plug in one cable and get access to both drives.
No, it's a separate plug for both but still I like it for my workload.
Finally dual drives for raid1 config!
I said no raid in video. Most people don't need raid.
@@craigneidel everyone need raid once they lost data. lol. u can still use it with two cables and Mac software raid. but 2 cables just wasteful of my ports.
@@ometofu raid can be good as I work in a data center. But this is a simple device and for most users who are not familiar with raided devices they tend to be riskier. For example pulling wrong drive during failure and erasing data. I may do a few raided reviews in future but this is a great device for under 50.
I love that is bus powered. I will pay 3 times more for it to be thunderbolt or USB-4 and have them go over 2GB/s.
Yes, Thunderbolt will be nice but there are other cases like the Acasis Thunderbolt enclosure that you can get for that.
Hi I have just watched video and went out a brought one, but i found the uplaod from ex to this not as fast has you said. It is takeing up to 30 min to move 37.5 GB from one to the other l am doing something wrong ?
Yes what type of port are you connecting to and what SSD. Also what did you format SSD as.
@@craigneidel C type Crucial P3 2TB , EXFAT
Not sure why it would be doing that. I have tested it with a few drives and I don't get that. Try reversing the cable or using another cable. Or it could be a bad board but that is unlikely since there are two boards in there so test both sides.
I just started considering an external setup. I was just gonna Get a Samsung t7 or something like that but would serious like this be much less likely to have failure and loss of data like the regular external ssds from popular companies that are already made ?
Also do you typically need software to run this kind of setup like you would with premade ssds, like Samsung for example?
I just want something that is least likely to fail and curious if this lasts longer than the other option , also if it’s easier to retrieve data . I read sandisks have a firmware update that won’t even let people retrieve their data
These are just a different way of doing it. If the enclosure fails then you can remove the SSD and if the SSD fails you still have the enclosure. But if you get a good M.2 for this it will be the same quality as the ones you buy and maybe even faster. You just need to format the M.2 Drives when you add them to any external device like this for the computer you will be using them on.
@craigneidelOh ok thanks , so these will also only last a couple of years like premade ssds , they don’t last longer like internal ssds?
I know sometimes external premade drives just fail for some reason idk if this is a better option
@@heythere6983 they should last many years just like internal SSD drives. As long as you get good SSDs. They are basically the same SSDs you'd put in any computer
Ah ok thanks yeah that was my biggest concern . I always hear about external premade drives failing , was hoping this could be a step up.
Thanks
Thanks.

Yeah this inst raid but plenty fast for 98% of people's use cases.
i want one that does raid between the drives.
It would be nice but on this one they are separate. I have seen a few people really mess up raid to (pull wrong drives etc.) but in the end it would be nice to have a model like that for sure. Thanks for the comment.
So you can have a D drive and E drive in the same case?
It's not raided but shows up as two separate drives. So if on windows it would show up as different letter drives.
@@craigneidel ok....ok...

That thing with Thunderbolt and Raid support - now we're talking
Yes I hope they make that
USB-C or USB-A end shouldn't make any difference if the port is a 10. JFYI.
Cool enclosure indeed.
In many cases it does for various reasons, but on a newer Mac it would due to needing a hub or something in between. But on paper 10 Gbps should be 10 Gbps.
Hello. I'm looking for dual NVMe M.2 or dual sata 2.5" via 1 cable + RAID, high speed is not needed, but it is necessary to support 4tb ssd (total 8tb).
I don't want a NAS, they're all bulky and rated for 3.5", although I want to put a pair of 2.5" or m2 ssd. I know about the asus for 6 m2 ssd, but so far such a volume is not required.
it is very surprising that ssd has been around for a long time, but there is nothing designed only for 2.5 ".
P.S. I hate hdd, lonies are noisy, bulky, fragile, and die like flies.
Yes, I have not seen anything like that before but will do a video on one if I do find them in the future. I'm always looking for interesting products to showcase.
Thanks Craig. Anything built by Master Yoda is okay by me. 😅
Yeah, I like the name funny. Interesting product showcase and it's just a cool overall product. It is super solid as far as the build but we will see how it holds up over time.
@@craigneidel I couldn't resist :-)
@@bryans8656 yeah it's hard with a name like that😃
I use the OWC 4M2 with 4 of the Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB and I get 2500 r/w
Nice. That is about 5 times the cost though, at $250 for the base, but you do get Thunderbolt 3 speeds which make it nice. It just comes down to the speed you need for your work. A bunch of options. Thanks for watching.
Really cool solution for two NVME, but you didn't test both bays...
Thanks for watching and the comment. The one thing I do and mention is that I do product showcases. I'm a small creator and like to find products that are different and I think are interesting and then do a product showcase (not a full review). So I did test the other side myself but my videos are not about specifications or extreme hardware testing. My channel is more fun and about just showcasing a product so people know these small products exist. I always tell people to research before buying but I normally won't do a video on a small tech product unless I like it. I'm only one person so I actually don't feel comfortable doing extreme testing on things, or calling things out as 100%, since I am human and make mistakes. In the end though I just like to show people different tech, and a bunch of Mac stuff, but don't get into extreme testing or benchmarks. I try and keep it lite (don't want to get into a Linus Tech Tips situation that is going on today - kidding). The other bay does work fine but keep in mind you need 2 cables to use both and they don't show up as one drive etc. (no raid). Thanks for watching.
I would avoid the crucial P3 or P2 plus 4tb as they only has a TBW of 800TB, there only advantage is that they run fairly cool as they are PCI 3 devices. I like the fanxiang S880 4TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD M.2 2280 for $30 more it is PCI 4 and has a TBW of 2800TB for the 4tb model 1400TB TBW for the 2tb model and 700TB TBW for the 1tb drive. I prefer single drive caddies to duel drive units, for size, and cost, but each to there own. I would avoid any PCI 5 NVMe drives as are really pointless as no normal system for the for se able future can use there speed anyway, they are overpriced by a massive margin, they have issues with running so hot you really need active cooling or they thermal throttle and that will shorten there life span.
Thanks for the info. Yes, I use the SN770 and it works great and runs fine in this system. I would argue that 800 TB life is more than most people will ever need. Plus they normally can last 2 times as long. In the end somebody would need to be writing like 50 GB per day for 40 years to reach that and while it's possible depending on use most would be nowhere close to that.
@@craigneidel Hello craig, do you have any idea if PCIE 4 ssd's get significantly hotter than PCIE 3 in SSD enclosures? I ask because it is no longer a necessity (for the price) to buy PCIE3 specifically..... Also do you think the smaller brands like Apacer will work with this? (I have a good deal on an Apacer AS2280Q4 )
Thank you in advance....
Yes, usually (on average) the PCIe 4 will be hotter than the 3. They run faster and produce more heat in most cases but not all. Cooling make a big difference and can be done so many ways. Finally, I don't have any experience with the Apacer line of SSDs so I'm not sure if that would be compatible or not. I'll need to check out that line.
like the Name Yottamaster
It's an interesting name for sure.
Speed isn't very good. I have a single name setup and get close to 3K / sec transfer speeds.. using Ocasis & Samsung drive
That would be on a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure and I have done that also but this is only a cheap 10 Gbps enclosure. So you can't get those speeds here but it's still fast enough for 95% of people.
BUT USB ONLY.....
Yes, what do you expect for $45 or less with two bays. 10 Gbps is fast enough for about 95% of all people including me and I create 140 videos per year.
i see this on aliexpress under $20
They are great for the money. I use mine every day and as long as you don't need Thunderbolt these things are built great.
I still like the OWC Mercury enclosure for $39.
Yeah but two different things. That was 2.5 inch and this is m.2 dual bay. But we all have different needs and likes. Thanks for watching.
Friends don’t let friends buy OWC. Sorry. I’m at this storage quandary now and I’m avoiding OWC.
Ok, but I have had nothing but good experiences with OWC and many friends too. All products will have a certain failure rate in the end is what I have learned from using hundreds of products per year.
I’ve had good luck with owc as well. To each his/her own
Wait u need 2 cables for 2 drives no thanks.
Ok.. not for you.
Yikes not even 800 Gb per second?! That is incredibly slow. You can find other enclosures that will do 2.8 Gb per second
Funny, yes you can but those are 40 Gbps enclosures and much more money. This is a 10 Gbps enclosure like 90% of the ones out there and a very reasonable speed for that. In fact 800 MB/s (not Gb per second like you said) is fast enough for 90% of all tasks and I can even edit 4K videos on this easily. So it's fast enough for most people unless you know that you need the speed for specific thigs. Then you can spend normally about $100 more for the enclosure and get the 40 Gbps enclosure that goes up to the 2,800 MB/s. I have many videos on those enclosures.
Meh..l whatever. I prefer RAIDs
Then use raid. I have seen many people lose data with raid over the years working in a data center so it's just another option.
That is terrible speed!
Terrible, how fast do you need? 98% of the population could use this and be happy with the speed. I can edit high codec 4K HD video off it. I know there are faster enclosure and I review them, but in the end what do you do that warrant's a higher speed. And having to wait 2 more seconds doesn't count. What are you doing where you need 2,800 MB/s and that is a fair question. I try and help people and people love to waste money on expensive stuff. In the end they don't need it and for an external drive 875 MB/s is more speed than 98% of the population would need and even the people that need to wait another 5 seconds can do that in most cases. So I just need to follow up on this comment because people always say that but what do you do that warrants a faster speed?
The speed is fine, and not slow for what it is. It’s advertised as 10Gbps USB. The typical max throughput for enclosures of that type is 850-950MB/sec in the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test. Craig’s result is exactly in that range.
Sure, the SSD itself can go much faster…if you mount it internally. But we are talking about an external enclosure, and that means you are restricted to external protocols.
The only way to beat this enclosure is to step up to a 40Gbps protocol like Thunderbolt 4/USB 4. But you are going to spend 3 to 4 times as much money. And even then, 40Gbps is not enough to use the full speed of today’s best NVMe SSDs, like the ones that can reach 7000MB/sec. That’s about one-third faster than what Thunderbolt 4/USB 4 can achieve.
So for lots of people, getting around 900MB/sec in a cheap enclosure is great, and works well for all kinds of things. It’s more than good enough for my photo and video editing.
Especially because…in real world use, many tasks, including backups, don’t even come close to exceeding 10Gbps USB3 due to things like file system overhead.
@@brightboxstudioYes but why buy a pcie gen 4 x 4 high end drive to put in an enclosure like that? Just buy one of the cheapies like a 4TB Lexar that you can probably get for the same price as the 2TB WD. Will still be bottlenecked by the interface.
@@mondotv4216I don’t buy the super fast SSDs for my 10Gbps enclosures. Like you say, there’s no need. I just get something affordable at the right capacity, since most now comfortably exceed 10Gbps. I was replying to the comment that seemed to want something a lot faster than 10Gbps. If they really need 2800GB/sec, then like I already said you can’t use 10Gbps USB 3 anyway so they shouldn’t even be watching this video, they must pay 3-4 times as much for a USB4/Thunderbolt enclosure.
