I disagree about not letting kids play guitar when young. They DO know the difference and you can’t fool them. There are many guitars that are made with kids in mind. I went through this scenario with my kids and now my grandkids. So I get them something that they can handle. Now both my kids and grandkids can play circles around me! Give them the instrument they’re interested in… not something else.
Thanks Phil. Yes, at 8yo started piano( hands to small for violin) violin at 13, guitar at 15. Still guitar and relearning violin.😊🙏🏻Ps, now 76yo.
It's nice that Phil gave Finnish people so much work. 🇫🇮
😎👍
I like your advice about young children being given a Ukulele rather than a guitar. And it's got to be FUN!
When I was 10-11, my mother rented a cheap music shop guitar that had "dead" rusted strings, wouldn't stay in tune, and had a warped neck with a high action. NO FUN there! I wanted to quit after about 2 months, never learning a thing except how boring practicing scales can be.
When I was 14, my sister got a baritone ukulele, but decided quickly that she didn't really want to play it. So, I latched onto is, bought a "Learn How To Play" book and loved it. It was FUN to play simple songs.
At 16, two friends told me I should get a guitar, and since I was familiar with the Uku, it should be an easy transition to learn the guitar. Not having a lot of money, I bought an inexpensive "Tenor" (4 string) guitar from a big mail order catalog company. That 4-string was a fun to play. (All the girls love it if you can play a guitar.)
At 18, I bought my first "Good" accoustic guitar. A Gibson J-45. That was a much better guitar than I understood at the time. Wish I still had it today.
All this because at 14, I discovered (on my own) ust how much fun it could be to play a stringed instrument.
StewMac actually has a pretty good video about drop-fill repairs. Basically follows what Phil says, with visuals.
What Phil is talking about when he says "It's hard to explain owning a CZcams channel to someone..." is so true. I grew up relatively poor- less than middle income but not dirt poor I guess you'd say- so I didn't know jack about getting loans or a mortgage or anything like that. I always thought if you had the money that was all they cared about- that's not true. They have to be able to trust you'll still have money 3 yrs form now, 5 yrs from now, etc. - which means you have to have a story about your income and future they understand and can trust in. Something they have check boxes for on the form- there's no check box for "Owns a CZcams Channel". I know that sounds silly but it's really true- if you don't fit the mold of the average Joe citizen- they don't know whether they can trust your income and future or not. Now you're asking a loan officer to put themself on the line and try to go above the algorithm's head- which is rarely if ever going to happen. I don't own a CZcams channel- I run a business making leather goods, I breed and raise dogs, and I make knives, I restore old watches and sell them, etc., etc.- I've done this my whole life, I don't like punching someone else's timecard. And the minute internet commerce became an accessible thing for the everyday person- I realized I no longer had to. And the main problem I've had ever since is trying to verify my income/employment when applying for loans or anything like that. The truth is though, I make more money this way and I have more job security than ever before- it's up to me.
As a small five year old boy, I wanted to play guitar. My first one was a Harmony Stella. It had slightly high action and I didn't know any better. It had a floating bridge. I had no idea about intonation until my teens. It was kept until it was sold when I was in my twenties.
I don't know why, but around 2015 ukuleles came into my mind. It probably was because CZcams videos were fed to me. When traveling in Portland, a ukulele mecca other than Hawaii, a recommended plastic model was bought. It was between a soprano and concert size. It was played so often that the plastic frets were wearing. The intonation was off and the nut was high. In 2017 a real wooden tenor ukulele was bought and it was so much better. The plastic one was rarely touched.
I got good at playing ukulele and really didn't have an interest in guitar playing. A company had a ukulele sale and I got a $399 ukulele for $183 with a pickup. To this day it is my favorite. The others were sold. Everybody should get a ukulele. They are happy instruments. A ukulele would be great for any child that wants to play one, but only if they aren't asking to learn to play guitar. If they want a guitar, get a guitar. There are six string ukuleles that could work for a very small child as a stopgap.
That is awesome. Love playing ukulele. An instrument I wished I discovered sooner is the Requinto guitar. They are small Spanish guitars tuned to A, same way a guitalele is tuned. Very comfortable to play.
Please make that guitar collection video. That sounds cool.
Like James James used to do every year or so
Bought 7 Harley Benton...... sold them all. Not "Sticky" at all. Realised a guitar needs to play really well and have Mojo to stay on the wall for me. Found the Soloking Guitars To be extremely sticky so do check them out and they are very price friendly. Just finished shooting the review and was super impressed.
I have seen SO many used Harley Bentons listed at or up to 40% higher than their new price. People’s expectations about what they can fetch for used gear when the inexpensive new gear is getting so good are off, it seems.
The shipping these days adds $85 to the price of a Harley Benton. They are not as much as a deal when you add that overhead in.
Almost everyone thinks they own a goldmine, then reality hits…
Yes Reverb lists an abundance of them and they add shipping of their own way above the original price point. Wondered if they think people aren’t smart enough to buy new ones direct from Thomann.
@@barbmelle3136 yup I'm tired of the buy HB great value with no mention of the high shipping cost and also the added VAT. Better off buying something else with the additional costs irrelevant to the guitar itself.
You're 100% right. I've seen so many people asking ridiculous prices for their inexpensive used gear. But there is a lot of high end gear out there that people are selling at great prices. You can tell the sellers that understand the market and those that don't.
Yes a guitar collection video would be awesome
Dean never stopped selling the Vengeance V.... it's the same pointy style V they continued to offer after the Gibson lawsuit. That style didn't infringe on Gibson's trademark. Dean stopped offering the traditional V shaped body and has NOT started selling those again. Same with the Z... Dean is no longer selling that because it infringed on Gibson's Explorer but they are still selling the Dean "Zero" because, like the "Vengeance" it is a sharper cut body. Both were previously Mustaine models and the Vengeance was renamed after he left.
I have one of the lower end Dean Mustaine VMNT guitars and its fantastic. I've had it since 2009 and the neck is probably my favorite neck I've played.
Who would have thought that Dean V's in the Gibson-style might become as valuable as the actual Gibsons!
@@monstrok That would be great. I own a bunch of them! :)
☝love to see a video on the collection you bought. Sounds like some great guitars
Thank you for answering my question regarding the drop fill on the Angus Young Gibson SG. I forgot to ask about the color match, but I'll just take it to someone. Thank you for all you and your wife do for the guitar community.
I severely fractured my left wrist about 6 months ago Phil. Finally got around to trying to play again and I can but wow does it severely hurt. It’s all healed up but I’ve completely lost all all strength and flexibility. Got a nice 450 dollar cart from stew Mac to be able to swap the nut on my strat and swap it to try 8s. Definitely added a few other things in there to but I went ahead and clicked your affiliate link so ya can make 45 bucks Phil. Wish me luck, I start rehab next week, it’ll be painful but I’m not to worried and I’m not going to stop playing.
Yes, please do the collection buying video! I would find that super interesting.
I noticed listings, more than a few, on Reverb for used guitars with stock photos. Give me a break. I even want photos of new guitars. They aren't all the same. Imagine selling a used car and postings pictures of a new one from a brochure. That would be a joke, right?
You should report those, reverb will take down the listing until new pictures are put up
imo...usually the absolute price difference between inexpensive used and new gear is not great enough to make the risks of used gear worthwhile.
Hybrid tube amps are a whole separate category. The Johnson Marquis and Millennium amps are probably some of the best hybrids I have ever heard.
Fender also did well with their Roc Pro series.
Yes, do the collection video, and also include how you sold off the other instrument, possibly with amounts, leaving the net purchase
Need to see that collection video!
Yes, please for the collection video
I'm definitely in favor of the guitar collection video!
The Dean lawyers should have argued the guitars weren't V-shaped, they're actually Y-shaped and as they also don't have flight capabilities, they are known as the 'Plummeting Y'.
Hmmm, now off to register the name before Badlands does.
I love the flourescent orange Ibanez RG with neon green pickups in the background!
I didn't know joined the Army. I have to say THANK YOU. No matter how long you served, doesn't to me, but I appreciate it much.
Not tying up with just an single brand seems to be possible for musicians that are good at the business, or have people around that is. A young band I have been following have 1 guitar player, but have like 3 guitar brands shown as sponsors on their band site. Main guitar endorsement are PRS. The bass player are endorsed by a 4th brand, Spector.
But this band did apparently also negotiate an unusual deal with the label, were the band keep several income sources completely seperated from the label.
Selling used guitars in Canada should be easier, because Gibson won’t allow dealers to discount new guitars. Therefore, new prices continue to climb and thus should help the used market.
Or the used guitars will rise due to the higher priced new guitars and inflation.
I'm in for the buying a guitar collection video! You should make one for every collection you buy.
I have an 80s era Kustom Studio 6 Valve. 150 watts! Pre-amp is tubes, power amp is solid state. Cool amp. WAY more than I need, of course. My PG Spark gets most of my playtime, and to be honest, its 40w is more than I need too. I think Santa might bring me a Spark GO.
I think it's great that Solar is offering an affordable option for people who can't afford the regular line. What i think is not great, is that Solar hasn't fixed their massive issues with their regular line and they're expanding to other products.
I would love a video like that. Or even a series of videos showing the whole process.
"Collection Video" = 🟢(Would love to see that!) Used Reverb purchases = 🟡 (Proceed with caution!) I rarely have "pulled the trigger" on "Private Party" sales: Dishonesty can EASILY be cloaked in what might otherwise be interpreted as simply "poor communication skills"! I've ALWAYS gotten GREAT deals from online "brick and mortar" AND "drop-ship" shops. The gear is often BETTER than represented! (I'd be happy to share how that is done)
Just caught up with my question on the tube amps. Cheers Phil 🙂
I call Amps like that tube hybrids as well
I need to do a setup on every guitar I buy on line. My Fender Ultra Stratocaster was perfect out of the box, that is exeption.
On used value guitars, I’ve noticed here in the UK a mass of used PRS SE’s at around £600 in guitar shops that are the same price as the new ones.
Not just PRS although it stands out more with them. A Mccarty SE new today is about £200 cheaper than it was in January. Early adopters always pay more.
Daddario is running that $4.99 sale at their company level, not just Sweetwater.
I'm jonesin for an SG right now. eBay has been good to me this year. Bought 3 guitars this year and all of them arrived in perfect condition.
Phil if you did a deep dive into a collection we would watch every second of it - you know it
So...I wanted to say I would like to see a video about the gear collection you bought.
Ola has been making these for South American and developed markets for a while I believe. I wonder if they are stuck with some, so why not roll them out here.
I'd be interested in the guitar collection video's. I like a few other channels that do that.
Gibson may not have a problem with Dean's newest V, but how about Fender.
From your explanation about legal battle between guitar companies, I get the vibe it is also what happen to ESP. They stop making four knobs eclipse, hockey stick headstock, and Jackson-esque headstock without making any news about legal battle. They can reach agreement with Gibson and Fender without any big fuzz on media.
I have 2 zither stands in my living room for Bass. It gives extra clearance off of the floor. Cats paying would have banged into the guitars much harder had I chosen to use a guitar stand instead of the bass stand. If you dont own basses or cats the guitar stand will look great in the living room. Thanks for the stands Mom! Give credit where its due.
What happened in the budget market is people tried to run out stocks and get a premium on resales. We saw it with firefly and with eart. A few you tubers gave good reviews and suddenly people are buying 3 or 4 at a time and somehow thinking that they are going to to put a markup and resell. I was seeing stock firefly guitars on reverb for $360 when the thing could be had new for 225. I don’t feel bad for people sitting on a 5 grand of cheap er budget guitars or gear.
Great advice regarding kids with guitar vs piano
Do a video about the Collection!!!😎🎶🎸☮️
I also have a 1946-47 not quite sure. It’s a Rickenbacker with volume and tone knob, otherwise known as the frying pan. on an open market what do you think that would fetch and it’s it’s original case. Any guesses?
The problem with the cheaper used stuff is not moving is it is being priced like its new
I'm here! I'm happy the topic I asked made it to the title. Low hanging fruit
Ur buy bk plan i think is nation wide , thts how it is in Indiana also .
Please make that video.
I’ve tried and tried with sweetwater, through two or three reps over several years now, and have never been given a “deal” after asking. They “matched” a coupon I had from AMS once (after having to practically beg) and even then, the bass they sent me was not good. It was unreasonably problematic getting a return label. I still purchase from them but only because I have a zero interest account. If ANYONE else had the same terms? Well, I don’t like candy THAT much.
Somewhat interesting note I just thought of in the Slash/multiple-endorsement conversation, is that I seem to remember on some Instagram stories related to GNR that were posted at a show on tour, Slash was playing through a Supro. Like, a Supro combo. In the guitar world amongst the Marshalls, of course. Now that could have been Fortus and I’m not remembering correctly, but I’m pretty sure it was Slash. I guess he just never got asked, or asked them, to make him a signature amp.
38:05 the difference is that a sponsored artist isn't getting one piece of gear. They get multiple and a paycheck from the manufacturer. If they build a product around an artist that's different than a YT creator making a demo/review video.
I have a 1970s fender concert 100 watt head and 4-12 cab ,it’s completely tubed and it’s 100 watt head with Groove Tubes Does that make a difference or not ,do you know ? I absolutely think it does. Or maybe I am absolutely wrong.
? I think Stainless steel frets is the most important thing for a cheap guitar eg Harley Benton.everthing else can be upgraded but to re-fret a cheap guitar don't make sense
Harley Benton doesn't make much money from lower range models and that's not something Solar wants to compete with. The higher end is where the money is (300-500 EUR)
I've bought around 15-20 guitars this year from stores like BAX music because they were so aggressive with their cheapest guitars. 70 EUR for a Fazley with a roasted maple neck and HSS is insane.
I think retailers like Sweetwater should check a guitar and if it frets out then they should send it back to Epiphone. Lol. Not just send it to the customer. Manufacturers should have to deal with their QC issues. I bet if they get 100 guitars sent back at their cost they might step up their game. A guitar should have perfect frets. If not, sent it back. Dont send it to a customer. Ever. Too many fret issues. Or Sweet water can fix it themselves. They know if a guitar isn't right. Its BS that customer has to deal with a fret level.
I agree, I got an Epiphone Pro 339 and all 6 strings were laying on the frets and the pickup selector was intermittent. Unplayable. Epiphone should have never let anything with "PRO" in the name be that bad. That is unacceptable even with the products that cost 1/3rd the price. The return was more hassle than doing a set up and replacing the selector switch with a Switchcraft part.
I predict soon, any sub 1500.00 guitar built in the last 10 years will resell for half or less of what it cost new…
I think the modular guitars are for people that want one guitar Phil. Personally I prefer more guitars!
🤘
I was just wondering are Burny guitars the equivalent of an Epiphone?
oooo are you working with Banker?!
I have a solar s line in queen creek if you want to review it?
i was looking at used squiers and they were like 15 bucks less than retail. I don't know if this competes with harley benton cause harley benton i think nails the strat and tele alternatives. These solar guitars look like they are aimed at the metal guys only.
All Solar products are aimed at the metal community.
$300 or up life's good. Under $300 keep it
Hello. 🤘🏼
I think a set up is extra, but an unplayable guitar is not ready for retail.
I fell for the Firefly hype and bought one of their LP classics. Upgraded pickups, bridge, tuners, nut and it’s still a piece of garbage. Lesson learned I will never buy a low budget cult following guitar ever again.
You are right. A bargain basement entry level guitar may be fun to play with, fun to hot rod and modify, and you can get them playing pretty good. They will seldom ever be on the level of a premium guitar.
When I buy a guitar, I don't mind tweaking it a bit, but if NEEDS a setup that is the store. I don't buy a car. And then they tell me but it needs a tune up.
Haha. Great point. We have somehow accepted that buying a brand new guitar comes with the need to set it up. The only difference is that "setup" is subjective. If you buy a new car and want 50 more horsepower then that's on you. But it should arrive functional.
There's a glut of gear on the market. It won't shift until prices crash.
I saw an interview with a guitarist years ago (can’t remember who)…he said he buys his own gear because he doesn’t want anyone telling him what gear to use…sounds exactly like what Phil was talking about at 44:00….interesting!!!
The scarcity of the guitars you bought makes fir interesting viewing! Do the video, please.
Hey Phil it's always thanks for the videos look forward to Fridays when I catch the reruns LOL I don't understand I mean I can understand if you're a guitar manufacturer or selling the guitars you know you don't want to use the word cheat but why is it that all CZcamsrs and it's not just guitars it's just everywhere no one will use that word cheap we all know inexpensive is this the slang is just the the code word for cheap why can't we say cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap Iona 102 Chief guitars and I'm still alive the guitar still play well and they sound good and I'm alive and I own a couple of cheap guitars I also want a couple of expensive guitars so hell y00 well maybe I should refer to my expensive guitars that's very very unexpected guitars I've been in a in a complaining mood all day so I thought I'd end my complaining with
commenting past my complaints ending on to you none of this makes any sense and since I'm blind using speech to text is probably screwed the text up itself it has a mind of its own and does what it wants to and it likes to make me look illiterate anyway thanks always Phil all in good chest sincerely above the line bedroom guitarist all in good just what does that😅
That old artists agreement was telling. The music industry was built on restrictive bullshit on top of innovation. Didn’t matter if it hurt others or itself, the restrictions and subsequent control was the point. It’s been a long time coming to pull away from that.
Going after Harley Benton? S isn’t even making any traditional shapes. Harley Benton is going after Fender, Gibson, Mosrite, and all the rest. I want one of those HB P90 Mosrites.
They shoulda called the new dean V.. "The Authentic" lol 😂😂😂😂 come on...
While the solar is a great looker they are not real competitors and no way near harley benton for spec,s considering you get stainless frets a top quality floyd and good tuners on the harley compared to cheap hardware on the solar,
Did you actually buy one of the last guitars called “The Bitch “The only other person that I know that owns one is SLASH… I believe they only made about eight of those guitars.
If my dad gave me uke instead of. A strat
.........I didn't want a uke or piano.a strat....with a whammy...to bug my mammy
handy people?? 🤣

Can you make a short of the last topic, guitar for kids. Easier to share the information to parents.
Wait, what?
Do we want to see you buy a collection and cherry-pick the good ones and sell the rest off?
Do you not know us?
This is exactly the type of thing us morons want to learn about.
(No offense to the non-morons)
