In the late 70's/ early 80's UK , copies of black Gibson Doves were quite popular sellers in mail order catalogues. They were always black . My brother bought one , I think it was branded Antoria. I always assumed because of this that black was the standard Gibson colour for the model. My brother loved it because it was his "Elvis" guitar !
I've had a 1978 Dove for 25 years. Fell in love with it at first tryout. No built-in electronics and I have no desire to put any in. Mine sounds just as satisfyingly thumpy as the one in the video but a lot of sustained treble comes out as well, which makes it great for melodic fingerstyle playing (despite a neck that is a slight bit skinnier than ideal for my hands). Obviously a super rhythm instrument as well.
Shitty day Eddie Dies and my only guitar I own gets stolen. Been unemployed since March cause of covid and about run out of money for food and rent. At least I got this great video to watch.
The Dove is such a beautiful instrument. I bought an Epiphone Dove, and it had a very Les Paul feeling slim neck. It wasn't very loud, but sounded great as a strumming guitar. However, after about a month the neck started bending to a point where it was unplayable due to severe fret buzz (at 12th-14th fret). Traded it in for a new Dove, same thing happened. Got my money back and bought a Yamaha, and it has stayed straight and in tune for several years. Couldn't be happier with the Yamaha!
@@marions.120 That's awesome! And it's really cleaver to keep them safe, I believe the rosewood ones are the most desirable. And is such a cool background history and the whole keeping it into the family thing! Congrats bud!
Never owned a acoustic guitar before i been looking at two companies first one is Taylor and Gibson i know Jason Aldean has a Gibson acoustic. That dove inlay on the pick guard amazing R.I.P Eddie Van Halen
I like to practice with your show running in the background sometimes because all the cool gear you demo is pretty inspiring. I randomly decided to try playing incubus Drive after not trying for weeks and then you start cranking it out on the black dove. Pretty cool Trogly 😎 Keep up the great work man I really dig your vids
I realize this post is three years old. The Strip down center of back side is known as the Marquetry strip. A rather quite beautiful touch in my opinion. I believe it also helps to pretty up two piece backs with the more grain visible guitars that would otherwise not seam together as well due to grain differences. Thanks Trogly!
I was 17 when VH 1st album came out. The first time you heard Eruption/You Really Got Me explode out of the radio it was just otherworldly. RIP Eddie thank you.
I'm not an acoustic player, I don't have any real interest in acoustics, but I loved this video. It was informative, and I agree with every opinion Trogly expressed. I thought Trogly's playing was nice, as well. I really liked that rosewood fretboard, and bonus, no fret nibs. I hate nibs. I loved the inlays, as well. Trogly is right, they should have only done the top black and left wood grain showing with stains for the rest of the guitar. Overall, a really nice guitar, as far as looks, but I don't know enough otherwise to talk about the acoustic quality. I liked it. It might be nice to see a Hummingbird now, as a comparison video. Really nice video, Trogly.
Thank you for doing this one. I had a Hummingbird for a long time until an ex stole it. I’ve always thought of replacing it with a natural Dove. Great review. Would love to see you review a Hummingbird also.
Very nice💥 I still have mine, that I bought Brand New in 1977 -- Mine was made in Kalamazoo Mi. The case is pretty beat up, I still have the little' Gibson booklet, that came with it, and I my" Gibson Identifation card that came with it. Still plays great! It has never' been to a Luithier' I guess it does need a few frets tho. My tuners are not' grovers. Their bell' shaped. 🎶
Wow thanks for playing that Incubus song I haven't played that in probably 10 years or more.I got out my acoustic and played it for the first time in over a year.Nice video.
Lloyd Baggs comment on designing the EQ noted that the mids are often scooped out and filled in by the vocals, so you you don't need to cut bass and highs. Volume only on the L.R. Baggs EAS, which is on the Breedlove Pursuit Exotic Concert E Sitka-Koa I have in rotation. Thanks for this review, Austin.
That's the big selling point for Gibson over Martin's and Taylor's, unplugged they sound great and just boom! They are designed this way so you don't necessarily need to have them amped up. Now I don't know that much about acoustics so I am sure the Martin and Taylor fan club would say that those companies have this or that model that keeps up or is better than Gibson's, lol everyone always has a better one huh? I don't really see why there would be such an issue in the Gibson world of Dove vs Hummingbird, they are two totally different beasts, you cannot compare them. Gibson went with the maple sides and back to try and get more of the treble sounds out. You can take a Les Paul with a maple cap and one without and hear the difference, the maple is snappier, so if you can tell on an electric, you will certainly tell on an acoustic. I have a Hummingbird Pro, the Epiphone version (LOLOLOL)! When I bought it I read some of the reviews and they were saying the Epiphone version was "just as good as the Gibson" or some even said, " I have the Gibson version and this Epiphone is better and costs but a fraction of the price.". So I bought mine, $300 brand new! When it arrived and I took it out of the box, I instantly knew it was not going to sound anywhere near the Gibson version and boy was I right!! It's a decent acoustic for that price, but comparing it to a Gibson? No way!! It's no where near as good. But for $300 it is a decent guitar.
Beautiful guitar. I'm a Gibson guy through and through and play a 1999 Epiphone SJ18sce that I replaced the pickup/pre-amp system with an undersaddle Martin piezo direct output and use a 7 band EQ pedal. I love how it plays acoustically and it's not horrible plugged into a DI Box. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Although if someone wanted to give me a nice Gibson with an L.R.Baggs system, I'd gladly take it from them...
I worked out at Gibson MT for years and if someone ordered a Gibson Dove we would just use plan maple and none of the class 4 A wood. The reason that people love the dove is it is slightly brighter in tone than the Hummingbird and that longer scale also did not allow the maple to get thin sounding. However all the braces are the same.
Hes already said in previous videos he is very well aware of them but is not interested In reviewing them, regardless of they are made in the same factory by the same people
About time you did an Acoustic. I have 2 Gibson Acoustics - a J45 & a Parlor Rosewood AG, & I love both of them - so much so that I traded in my Martin’s for those 2 guitars.
Thanks for the review, nice to see an hear a acoustic guitar for a change, strangely enough that was one of the best playing demos you have done. Maybe you do need to buy one.
Man, I want a Hummingbird so bad!! Lol! I have what I believe is one of Gibsons best acoustic guitars they offer.. Gibson Advanced Jumbo.. (2012) Anyway, lol.. I'm looking for a possible Trade for a Hummingbird for my AJ.. I've just always preferred Mahogany back and sides over Indian Rosewood..
FWIW, Greg Lake (of Emerson Lake and Palmer) favored the J-200 for his acoustic work. Though ostensibly a bassist, he was phenomenal on guitar as well. Check out the video of him playing a 12-string and singing "Still, You Turn Me On" at California Jam 1974. He makes it look so simple and sound so good.

I have 1943 J-45. Great sounding instrument. And yes, mic’d sounded better.
A 1943 J-45 banner is my dream acoustic guitar! Does it have rosewood or mahogany body? And the top is spruce or mahogany?
Lucas Gratão -Looks like rosewood body with spruce top. My Godfather bought it for $45 during WW II. I’ve had it before I even played. ✌️🤪🎸
