SEAL Team Six Commander, Founder and Operator, Richard Marcinko, created a secretive unit within Naval Special Warfare dubbed Red Cell.
In 1984 through 1989, Red Cell, comprised of 13 ex SEAL Team Six Operators and a Force Recon Marine, sabotaged a series of Naval bases throughout the United States.
This secretive team was tasked with testing the security of U.S. military bases and installations by simulating attacks. Marcinko's unconventional approach emphasized realism, pushing boundaries to expose vulnerabilities and enhance military preparedness.
Red Cell became a crucible for innovative tactics and strategies, contributing to the evolution of modern special operations. Marcinko's leadership style, often controversial, left an indelible mark on the world of special forces, and Red Cell remains a symbol of audacity and adaptability in the face of evolving threats.

Fun fact: they tried this on Air Force bases, but every time they found a out of the way place on the base to try and sneak on, there was about three AF security forces members always hanging out. It was discovered that unlike the rest of the branches with their fixed patrol routes, the AF cops were told to just do whatever. So the cops were hiding in the most out of the way areas so they could goof off.

I went to a military school on base in California and not only did we a bunch of 14 to 18 year old boys know how to get on and off base without going thru security but we used to sneak in and out of our barracks on a pretty frequent basis because we would do things like try to take each others guidons because we would get punished for going to formation without them ... At the time we thought this was all fun and games but looking back I realize now how messed up it was that we were even able to do those things
kidnapping a dude for 30 hours is a little extreme, but literally invading military posts and testing defenses? That's genius. After 10 years in the army I could name a few installations with shit security, that could use a quick kick in the nuts to wake up and actually secure the post. Also Red Cell has the dream gig "hey you guys wanna larp and fuck around on sailors?" I can only imagine how much fun that was

I stood watch on the piers in Groton from 91 to 94. There were only rumors at the time about what had happened, but it was beat into us to always look for bubbles in the water around our boat. The only thing we ever saw was protesting environmentalists

The "official" reasoning as I heard, was that he had pushed it too far, and had hurt many personnel in the process. In their fervor to test security, as they stated, they decided to be rough. To a point where they were "torturing" personnel to simulate the extremes Terrorists would go to to obtain sensitive information...
I think (as some others have mentioned here), that he was crucified because he made the Navy look terrible, and the Admirals looked incompetent and complacent. In order to cover up the incompetency and complacency of their "good ol' boys", they took Marcinko and decided to make an example of him. Instead of learning from his exercises, they pretty much flat out called him a terrorist himself.
Nothing has changed with regards to Military Bureaucracy. They would flat refuse to accept their vulnerabilities and weaknesses to maintain a constant facade of impenetrable iron will and defense.
Fort Campbell, alone, has at least 5 points of interest where someone could casually walk in and disappear inside the post without anyone catching them. All of them in the Family Housing areas...
They definately wanted to get rid of him...but they cancelled Red cell because of the "torturing and embarrasing," they eventually "got him" for "stealing" funds for an operation.

As for denying there were any breaches, that is in favour of national security, so i understand that. Things get declassified years later when problems have been patched up. Would be foolish to reveal how easy it was to penetrate their defences when they are still vulnerable - who knows what would happen if the wrong people had that information at the time.
I'm all for operations like red cell. It did it's job, cos if it didn't then there is no way these things would be declassified! Hat's off to marcinko and his crew for improving american defences by revealing incompetencies!

You're god damn right it still happens now. I got so much shit for handling airmens' issues off the books and help them. It became a problem for our shirt and Co that article 15s went basically 1/10th of what they were, but guys needed morale, help, and to feel cared about. People stayed in line not because the rules, but because they didn't want to disappoint someone who cared about them. Then they bounced me out and took my stripes because someone who thought they wanted my job reported me for not crushing souls and kicking shit. It got ugly after that. Nothing got done. Ever. Suicides went up. Etc. I separated. This was 2007

I know firsthand of another incident here at the Air Force Base in tucson. In fact I've seen it happen firsthand. And that was within the past 5 years. And I'll leave it at that

Ron's lawsuit was completely justified, the torture he underwent at the hands of Red Cell was beyond any reasonable scope of work they were operating under. More importantly they almost got themselves shot in the process, as Ron's wife showed up during the kidnapping with a pistol that certainly didn't have blanks. Testing security gaps is one thing, torturing and beating a know nothing civilian security guard isn't productive.
As fun as this story is, this was all completely irresponsible. Security would have been in their full right to proceed with a lethal response, and then what? Plus, this was a glorified security audit; complete overkill.

Having a small group to test a bases readiness should be an essential part of the military. The part that kills me is the higher ups did the same thing back in the late 30’s when Pearl Harbor was obliterated twice in the same style drill. Had they pulled their heads out of their arses Japan would have never snuck up on us. Now these generals are claiming the same bull. If people in charge aren’t willing to learn from their mistakes and failures than they will never be effective.
They knew several days before the attack that it was coming and did nothing about it too.
Admiral Richardson, the guy in charge of Pacific command before Admiral Kimmel (the guy in charge during Pearl Harbor) was replaced specifically because Washington wanted the fleet moved from up it's usual harbor in Cali to Pearl Harbor and Richardson believed based on those drills in the 30s that we were exposing the fleet to such an attack for little to no benefit. He went on record saying he wouldn't support it and they replaced him

They did the right thing by moving the carriers out of harbour anticipating an attack. Pre-emptive attacks are risky and also make you the aggressor. The rules and diplomacy of war matter.

My uncle was is Navy basic back in the 80s. He said they all woke up with blue chalk across their throats one morning and had no idea what happened. It was revealed to them later that Navy seals had snuck in that night and practiced cutting everyones throats without waking them up.
Marcinko wrote a couple of good books on the matter. what was done to him was really an injustice. Instead of crying about it, the Navy should have learned from it and evolved their game which was the intent. Bruised egos will always put an end to good intentions though.
But embarrass the brass. They have a tendency to make your life miserable. Remember when they court-martialed General Mitchell because he proved that the Navy was vunerable from the air. Embarrased alof of battlehsip admirals.
I mean 100 percent he didn't deserve to go to jail for what happened, but in the end I think he made out pretty good period between the book deals etcetera and and publicity he turned that into some money. Which he had every right because as far as I know they stripped him of his retirement
@chrisscoleri2341 the only books that Marcinko wrote that were NOT fiction were Rogue Warrior (his autobiography) The Real Team (a collection of stories about the real men that the characters in his books were based off) and The Rogue Warrior’s Strategies for Success (a book about leadership) All the other books in the Rogue Warrior series were Fiction Novels

The whole point of Red Cell was to expose various security vulnerabilities at key government and civilian facilities that existed during that time, so that a 9/11 style attack did not happen in the future. Red Cell ended up being too successful at its job by making several military commanders and private security companies look dumb and incompetent, and bureaucratic politics is what ultimately ended Red Cell. Unfortunately, 9/11 did end up happening, and 3,000+ people ended up losing their lives as a consequence of that. Proving that the White House, Pentagon, and Langley, learned absolutely nothing from Red Cell and their tactics.
It's not that anyone was "dumb" or intentionally incompetent and derelict. They really didn't know any better. Marcinko had a shitty attitude. Red Cell had nothing to do with improving anything. It was just Marcinko and his shitty attitude tryna humiliate regular Navy officers. It was a good idea executed poorly. One of Marcinkos "TAD" boondoggles and a wasted opportunity.

I had the pleasure of meeting Commander Marcinko 20 or so years ago. Two things about him that I remember are how big his hands were. It was like shaking hands with someone in a catcher's mitt. And how almost soft-spoken he was for someone who did and could do the things that he did
You'd think pen testing military bases would be an annual if not monthly occurrence...we need those places secure.
Like in Cyber there is always a vulnerability, it’s just a question of how far someone is willing to go to exploit it. And a vast majority of the time, human error is the biggest vulnerability and no one really needs that reminder. Further, penetration testing a military base where armed response is in the SOP is a recipe for disaster - who would you have run this mission? Probably other military guys. And the military guys have inside access/information that an adversary wouldn’t have.
So basically even if you have a successful penetration test, the data is likely to be unsurprising or accused of being dubious due to insider information. And what would they do to improve the situation? Assign more training. Cool, you can do that without wasting money or risking lives on a penetration test.
There are exceptions, of course. Rolling out CAC or the post-9/11 security measures may or may not have had some positive impact. However, you’re not going to get political capital to roll out such gigantic programs in the US until something has already gone catastrophically wrong.
I would also go so far to say that they also already know what many (not all) of the vulnerabilities are, there just isn’t a great solution until humans are replaced by perfect AI. So no need to have someone air dirty laundry.
Although I am not white washing things - there is a lot about almost any system or organization incl US military that’s mind boggling incompetency
Fun fact: the U.S. Air Force still has a much tamer and officialy sanctioned version of what Red Cell was designed for. Namely, the Aggressor Squadron. Aggressor Squadrons conduct force penetration tests on a regular basis for installations globally. They typically announce ahead of time the start and stop times for force penetration exercises (which I always thought was counterproductive, because it puts airmen on a heightened state of alert as opposed to unannounced testing), but it generally functions at identifying vulnerabilities.
I met Marcinko 3 times over the years, buying his books at different meet & greets and listening to his amazing stories. He was pleasant, always cordial & happy to sign any inscription you requested. A big, strong man, definitely someone you would not want to be your enemy. RIP Mr. Marcinko
This reminds me of a local bank owner, who in the 80s or 90s, staged a massive robbery at one of his branches, to show police response time and how his staff handled their training. I cannot remember if the police were in on it or not. He got a lot of heat for doing that back then.
What shocks me is the fact that red cell obviously couldn't use lethal force, but wouldn't the soldiers on base use lethal force against them?
They were even notified beforehand of the excersise but they were usually still caught by surprise.

@Heike, to clarify they didn’t run around aimlessly. Red Cell spent hours upon hours recon when and where they would infiltrate. Yes, the bases knew an exercise was going to happen but Dick and his team might launch it days early to prove the point that a known exercise was useless. The biggest thing was man of his exercises ended up being black marks against CO’s so the ringknockers collapsed back on themselves to railroad him out and protect their own promotions. Navi flag ranks ignored the value and let it be political.
I did private security at a nuclear power plant for eight years and we ran similar force on force exercises frequently. The adversary team and the drill team use MILES gear and the duty team is aware of the drill. Even with many safety protocols in place to prevent live fire, there were some very close calls. The videos showing the Red Cell operators scaling fences shows that their team leader wasn't too concerned with safety. The easiest and safest way to stealthily breach a chain link fence is by cutting it. It only takes a couple seconds to breach and a few more to close the breach back up if you're worried about the breach being discovered. During a drill scenario it's easy enough to simulate by making the adversary team do their approach to the perimeter fence and then having a team inside the fence staged and ready to complete the interior portion of the exercise after simulating breaching the fence. Climbing is dumb as hell and much easier for CCTV or roving patrols to see. Looks cooler on youtube though, I guess. lol

Back in the day (80's and 90's) in Pearl, about once a quarter the seals would run an exercise where they would attach simulated explosives to a ship in port. The ship would of course be alerted, we would be given a window about when they would do it, and members of the day's duty section would man topside in an attempt to spot them. We had flashlights, battle lanterns, one time we even had night vision. They use draegers so, no bubbles. We never saw anything. Ever. For all we knew, they could have stayed back at their building drinking beer those nights. Marcinko was a great warrior but he certainly had a penchant for showing up the brass and downright pissing them off so they eventually got him for it.

Oh 100% they framed him, because he did nothing but embarrassed them and show them how poorly of a job they were doing. I mean my God they basically took an accounting error and sent him to prison for 18 months I believe, along with taking his pension. Thankfully from what I understand he made out pretty good on the book deals and such, but still🤬

When tested in 89 the Naval Security Force on NWS Fallbrook came out as the top security force on the West Coast. Later considered the most secure base the team had tested nationwide. A big part of our success was the fact that we were a small naval installation tucked into a corner of Camp Pendleton. Not only could we count on a rapid response force from the Marines, including UH-1W Cobras if needed, we also had the advantage of so many homes outside of our perimeter belonging to veteran Marines or rented to active duty Marines. They would call the command post if so much as a juvenile possum climbed our fence, much less a team of covert operators.
The Team hit us early one morning as the mess hall was just getting started and my platoon was getting turnover and weapons issue. A Marine called and told us "some guys had just cut a hole in our east fence line." We deployed in a defensive perimeter and could have held up real infiltrators long enough to kill or capture most of them and cause them to abort.
We may slam on our Marine counterparts but we knew they always had our backs and we theirs.
In cyber security they do these sorts of operations too. Its called Pen(etration)-testing, where a company or an individual hires someone to hack into their system so they can patch the holes afterwards. But it's not only good ol hacking, they do physical pen-testing too. Breaking in, stealing some files, sticking in pendrive etc. And its fascinating how they just go in with a high vis vest, hard hat and a clip board. No one stops you.

Do not look HTB boxes or CTF.... They may do a good job to learn the basic of some advanced technique and chain them together.. But in the I do not suggest you to approach whit the strategy or work flow that you use for solve boxes of CTF.. Cuz in a real life situation there is no way
i can really say that red team and blue team on pen testing can be heavily inspired on this
but the difference is in pentesting (maybe) the company want you to penetrate their security to see how vulnerable the security of company is,while red cell is unexpected and surprise test to see how weak the base/station is
@@muhammadrizkisatria5059 blu teams do not do that staff... In short the holes , vulns and stuff that red trams found get sended up to soc/Blu teams to get patched up... Anyway there are very very few red tems who do this kind of "guerilla direction actions" and even more less the society who hire them which usually are government related ($$$$) and when they got hired for those direct actions the whole structure under attack do not know that is happening or that op where organized...otherwise is useless if all employees, sec ecc ecc know what is going to happen... The only difference between read team doing that and red cells on the vids are pretty much one group is a bunch of nerds whit some usb,laptops, Lan turtles some lockpicks, blank Id cards and stuff... The other are a bunch of huge balls dudes armed assaulting bases whit other dudes armed... Eheh
Last but not least "red team" (not pretty sure if this can be still called in that way).. Infiltrating upon high sec facilities pumping up spywere or destructive maleware (check out the nsa/Cia op into Iranian Nuclear sites) and all between from identity theft and bad stuff are uuuused a lot from nsa or Cia and other nation similar agencies.. But this had nothing to do whit pen testing

There was a Seal Beach vet who gave more context about the Red Cell debacle. According to him, a Marine or somebody had stolen some gear on base, but the leadership suspected the civilian guards, so they took the opportunity of the upcoming Red Cell operation to ask Marcinko to get to the bottom of it. So, interrogating the lead civilian guard was just a complete SNAFU game of telephone BS ‘favor’ that Red Cell was doing as a sub-mission.

We need people like Richard Marcinko to keep us on point.
Marcinko was definitely a rogue person. We never meet him but he associated with a former military friend of ours. He visited northern California frequently years before his passing.
We missed an opportunity to have him sign his book. No matter what people think Marcinko was a patriot. He's also deceased so to speak poorly of him is something people should refrain from.

Marcinko was a piece of shit.
His leadership style created an "old boys´ club" that let the SEALs get away with fraud, compromising opsec, and doing war crimes in Afghanistan that only made it more difficult for the US to accomplish the mission there, not to mention causing the debacles in Operation Anaconda and Operation Red Wings leading to the shoot-down of helicopters, the deaths of dozens of fellow military service members, and making the SEALs infamous as a bunch of lying, backstabbing bastards leading to controversy over Bin Laden´s death, and costing Sergeant John Chapman one of the TWO Medals of Honor he earned in ONE go, with courage and gallantry the likes of which had never been captured on film until then.
It is honestly baffling how easily military buffs will fall for this shit, where they´ll read some book written by some guy stroking his own ego, and go "WOW THIS GUY WAS A TOTAL BADASS". Be a little more skeptic, for God´s sake.
Seal Beach was never really secure...between 1988 and 1992 I was on the base several times AS A LITERAL BOY SCOUT and saw minimal security the whole time. Keep in mind this was a weapons station where various munitions, conventional and otherwise, where the storage bunkers can be easily seen from the street (Westminter Blvd. and Bolsa Chica Rd.) where people drove by and lived nearby. The 405 freeway is so close that any terrorists attacking would have only needed wire cutters...and there are plenty of stores nearby where they could get those , including (at that time) a surplus store where they could have gotten military uniforms to blend in with the guards.
I was caught up in the massive traffic jam on Pacific Coast Highway when Red Cell "raided" Pt. Mugu Naval Air Weapons Station and compromised Air Force One when President Reagan was going to his ranch. I think it was labor day weekend if I remember correctly. Sheriffs, city cops, emergency personnel everywhere. I didn't know what was going on. Then years later, I read the book. DOOM ON THEM.

Your videos are always great but this one was really enjoyable. I love how you were able to have a little more fun since this was a non-lethal operation. Although your music is distinctive and punchy, sometimes it can be a little loud during your narration. I feel a tiny reduction would balance things better, but I'm not sure how others feel. Again fantastic channel.

The XO from my JROTC company became a member of the Army’s version of this unit. A year after he graduated, he came back to tell us what he did. He told us a made up story about what he didn’t actually do. During his visit he “destroyed” the school, then “destroyed” every key building on the military base, and came back the next day to tell us what he really did.

My dad has dealt with a few naval officers he said that to make admiral ots 10% keeping your head down and 90% not passing anyone off
When I was in USAF antiterrorism in the 80s, I worked with Red Cell when Dick Marcinko was in charge. After Seal Beach, Dick was fired and Red Cell disbanded as the video describes. It was replaced by the Naval Security Coordination Team (NSCT). The first commander was Captain Tarbox (I forget his first name). NSCT was less crazy. I don't know if NSCT still exists. Good times.
I can understand the utility of a program like this, and I think exposing the weaknesses in security is absolutely vital, but they went too far when torturing/interrogating a civilian contractor. I don't see the point of taking the exercise that far. I am also curious what these teams would have done if they encountered a guard who reacted with deadly force.

We had a post-Marcinko team come to the Navy facility (in the UK) I was stationed at in '88 and tore us a new A**hole. As a dumb cocky young PO2 on the ground defense force I loved it. The command didn't like some of it but they did try to implement the lessons learned, which meant we got to play GDF for a week every quarter and I got monthly range time. Glad I was living off-base as the sally's in the barracks got taken hostage and punished because they wouldn't say Allah Akbar when demanded and our MA1 (Mil Pol) got butt stroked because he thought he was rambo, he was an ass so we liked that out come. Those of us on the ground defense force learned a lot from the multiple day exercise they put us through after the initial take over scenerio. We also got to participate in all the UK wide exercises with various RAF, Army/TA, RM and a reserve SAS unit which was a huge education booster as well - that was the best part of my two years in the UK.
This is seriously one of favorite Navy Seal stories
Fun Fact: Red Cell was doing operations on 911 tracking a colonel. They didn't know anything happened until the base they were at went on high alert and they were recalled.
I might need to binge watch these docs again. And this "exercise" definitely needs to be reinstated.

There was an episode of Shawn Ryan Show where an older guy was interviewed. He was crawling in the middle of a field stalking a US general in the US on the morning of 9/11. He had to quickly extract himself without alerting the guards after being warned by his cell leadership. Forget who it was though.

Yeah Richard marcinko wrote a couple of books documenting his time in Vietnam with the teams and his time with red cell. I thought he got 18 months because of basically an accounting error and him being accused of stealing the money. And yeah watch the video he covers all this and what you said

IIRC, Red Cell would even give bases a heads up: "your facility has been selected for a security test, we're coming sometime in the next three weeks, hope your security is up to par."

Great job on the video! Anyone watching should read "Rogue Warrior", it has a few chapters dedicated to Red Cell. There is other info out there too that's been written. Marcinko said that a handful of base commanders and Admirals actually wanted him to lay out new security arrangements and training for their commands. Most cried and ran to momma. Fucking cowards. Put getting a cold shower and some rightly deserved embarrassment and criticism ahead of the safety of their men and the nation.

I grew up in Seal Beach. I was 12 and lived half a mile off base. One of my close friends was all about the Red Cell stories and later ended his Navy career in support of the teams, retired from Camp Billy Machen. They were quite the inspiration 😅

I read richard marcinko's autobiography and red cell back to back way back in 2008, one of the most remarkable stories I have ever read, so happy you did a video on red cell. Now I have a reference for when I tell people about this crazy time in military history (which I've told a ton of people about in conversation over the years). fun fact : he wrote his books from when he was in prison and he was a bit of a hothead that did things his way so he has a bunch of "Fictional" books he wrote about what are all most likely classified seal team 6 missions he executed.
