Navy SEAL Robs 5 Banks in 1 Month…

- Thomas Mixon was a former Navy SEAL and Red Cell Operator who turned bank robber in December of 2017. Mixon robbed a total of 3 banks, 5 times... leading authorities perplexed. The motives behind the robberies remain unclear.
Bank Robbery No. 1
The first bank robbery happened on Dec. 22, 2017, at the IBC Bank on Ranch to Market 2222 in west Austin where Mixon is accused of robbing the bank while holding employees at gunpoint. He fled in what police described as a dark gray pickup truck.
Bank Robbery No. 2
The same IBC Bank was robbed again on Jan. 5. He fled on foot. Even at that time, police believed it was the same suspect who committed the robbery in December.
Bank Robberies No. 3 and 4
The third and fourth robberies happened at the Prosperity Bank on Northland Drive, west of MoPac Expressway, on Feb. 1 and 7. Same description, and again, fled on foot heading southbound on Balcones Drive.
Bank Robbery No. 5
Authorities say his last bank robbery was on Feb. 26 at the Plains Capital Bank on North MoPac near Parmer Lane. Police at that time said the man entered the bank and demanded cash before fleeing on foot.

I encourage anyone to read the book on Red Cell. It's pretty wild. They kidnapped an Admiral's daughter. The unit did some crazy shit back in the day to demonstrate the weaknesses in security on Naval Bases.
Hmmm, perhaps that sense of impunity was intoxicating and the man wanted the excitement.

the security is still fairly shitty. We'd do 12 mile run swim runs a lot on a certain east coast navy base... and well.. I'm not taking my fucking ID with me and risking losing it. Even if my shorts had a little pocket. Sneaking back on base at the waterline was about as challenging as sneaking out of middle school between periods. I'll just say not once did any of the troop run into any problems. Eventually one of the officers tattled and they got a bus and made us run to the bus so we'd stop having to sneak in. Damn responsible officers spoiling all our fun. Once we had a new guy, on his first fucking day, get on the wrong bus and be taken back to the wrong team building. That was fairly hilarious. We made him run with a compass for a while.
Well you got to at least mention the book sounds like a good read.

@@adambugher4837 VA is, and has always been a shit show for any one with any kind of trauma. When they outsource, and let vets see a private doctor the system worked on some level. The military need to provide reintegration, not the VA IMO. They prepare people for military life, but not for discharge. They might have a one week transition assistance class, which is about useless.
That sounds like an excuse. Did most former special operations operatives become criminals after leaving the military? Probably not. It's just stupid and sad.
Tom Mixon is my first cousin. I just want to say that there is a lot more to this story. He really is a great guy. He was / is suffering from repeated PTSD and other issues. Life caught up to him and quickly humbled him. It is my belief that Tom wanted to get caught as some sort of self preservation.
Thank you for respecting him and his accomplishments in this short documentary. He received such a light sentence because of his prior service record and active community service in the Austin area.

It was the adrenaline and running from dangerous situations as a former Special ops. The civilian life sometimes triggers the brain’s capabilities for heightened dangers. PTSD is part of the reflex conditioning that even professional athletes and inactive former agents attempt at neutralizing, but unfortunately it becomes hard as time and training prove otherwise.
Even muscles and nerves get constantly conditioned to reactivate the Memory training that civilians never succumb to. In other words, they were programmed to be thrill seekers just the same as airplane parachuters get conditioned to jump from 2000 feet, then 1000 feet, etc.
The body remembers the feeling and sometimes requires it to stay sane.

@@AudieHolland The funny thing is that in all these cases, these guys get away with bank robbery for a while. If you had the discipline to stop after 1 or 2 robberies you'd probably be able to get away with it. Of course, none of these guys stop.

I did a little research and almost exactly a year before these robberies Mixon’s divorce was finalized and his child support was being withheld from his paychecks. This could definitely be a factor in what seems a late in life crime spree.

It certainly may have been a factor but I find it hard to believe that was the main factor, if one at all. He only "got away" with $60k or so total, and if you subtract the one that got him caught, I think that was closer to 12k. And while this could be the very reason he kept doing it, my counter would be he simply wasn't very good at it, or he had other motives, as I can't imagine many people hitting a bank and only getting $2k and then not only trying again, but hitting that exact same bank.... That's just no where near worth the risk of robbing a bank, and after 4 attempts, he had to know his luck was running out/the search for him was getting bigger. Not to mention how insanely inefficient to rob that many and only get that much. I'd have to look it up, but it might be the record for THE least efficient, and definitely one of the least efficient at least. I guarantee his personal training business had to be bringing in a pretty damn comfortable amount if it was as successful as depicted (unless things had recently fallen off a cliff). Not to mention the money possible in the private security sector.
And none of that factors just how careless he was, especially for someone so highly trained. Using his personal vehicle at even a single robbery, nevermind five, is too dumb honestly. This was late 2017, so he had to know there would be camera evidence. He should've been using disposable vehicles not registered to him that he disposed of each time. Not checking for trackers, or even not knowing most banks mark serial numbers is also just way too careless, period. Especially when he proceeded to hold onto the money, in his private residence and his personal vehicle, which again, he had used as the getaway! And it's just chilling in his front driveway with both the trackers and the money still in it.... Anyone smart would've turned that money into another form of money/valuables that couldn't be linked directly, and even then had it hidden. He surely even had the contacts to make this happen, but simply didn't even try. So, he either just wasn't very bright, or the motive didn't have to do with profit even. It's really bizarre and something I definitely wanna look into.

What? The entire reason people do bank robbery is because it’s a win-win for organized convicts. If you kill/harm no one, you get a slap on the wrist and probably profit. Not to mention the upside of NOT getting caught, which is possible.

That’s not how ptsd works. I get what you’re saying but ptsd is a strong stress response after experiencing something very traumatic. Having trouble with assimilating to an ordinary life after a life of non stop adrenaline is not a stress reaction to a prior traumatic event.

You should cover the ATM Solutions heist in Saint Louis in 2010. Several million dollars stolen, money stashed in a Hummer in Atlanta, members kidnapping other members family members for a share of the money, main culprit escaped from jail, but also idiotic mistakes they made that led to their downfall. I believe there’s still several million dollars not recovered.
I hate to see good men turn like this. All that training can pay better working for PMCs than rolling banks. Edit: This man needs to be sentenced to serve the dirty dozen or impossible mission squad for 97 months. He is too dangerous to other inmates to go to criminal school.

I've heard former SEALs describe people in the teams as being tantamount to felons with a noble mission. Part of the training is dealing with how to acquire the resources needed to succeed in the mission, by any means necessary.
This guy's former boss, the late Richard Marcinko was a felon and right along the lines of what you describe being told. During his time leading red cell, where this guy aparrently worked for him, he was actually arrested and tried and convicted for similar things to what you described. I read the book Marcinko 'wrote' years ago when it came out. It was interesting.
This guy was an idiot though and couldn't come up with anything better than robbing banks like a common crook.
In the British army there's a joke that the SAS are essentially criminals in uniform.
While I know this may not be a popular opinion, and I'm definitely not trying to say it applies to across the board as that's certainly not the case, but many military members- especially special ops- profile very similarly to criminals, and often do turn into them. Or at the very least, would've had a higher chance than normal had they not found a better outlet. Many who join do so due to being adrenaline junkies or other similar things that mentally tend to drive people to just crave "something more", oftentimes with that being flat out violence. As someone who graduated with a degree in criminal justice, I can't tell you how many of my classmates went on to be swat members etc who would often tell me how "boring" their week was because the "best" thing that had happened that week was a drug dealer robbing a gas station pulled a gun on them or what have you. And you can just hear the disappointment in their voices when they say this. Which I always thought was a kinda disturbing thing to want something more exciting- i.e. more dangerous- to want to happen in the line of duty. Which ultimately, it's definitely better to have them on the right side of the law, it's ultimately just a bad mindset to have regardless, and that proves the point that who knows what would happen if they didn't have a "legal" outlet to direct that energy.
Also, and this will be the the least popular opinion, but I've simply seen it many, many times, and that's that a lot of people who join the military just aren't the best of people and join because their lives literally have no other options. And again, it's better this then them not doing anything productive with their lives, but I've also seen many of these types go on to use their military resources or situations they're put in to just commit crime while having a good cover. This is less often anyone I've personally known going special ops, but again not only does that likely happen too, it also doesn't take away from the point being made.

A few years ago A guy i know robbed a local bank and was pretty quickly arrested for the robbery. He got out of jail on bail in a day or two. The very next day while out on bail he again robbed the very same bank he was just arrested for robbing. The dude ended up only doing about 18 months for both robberies. True story.
I'm almost certain if I get arrested with Perc on me I'll do more than eighteen months and even if no one got a gun shoved in their face during my casual drive home. It's crazy that a violent crime gets you a slap on the wrist like that.

Man I love how short and simple your videos are. There perfect for when I'm bored and have a few minutes to kill (or eating lol). Much better than something like various cable TV shows who would take these exact stories and turn them into hour long episodes where they repeat themselves so many times and try to build suspense and stretch it out to throw as many ads in as possible (something I can't remember hitting much of at all in your videos despite most content creators throwing as much as they think is possible in). @@babkeebabkus8177 lol this is why he should've stayed in the seals and received more training in espionage but hes only a tier 2 operator and usually tier 1 guys like CIA and delta are usually better trained for that but still he should've either got more training or checked for the tracking device fat L well atleast he was impressive and skilled enough to rob the banks multiple times even the same ones without getting caught for awhile he did better than most criminals he could've gotten away with this if he checked for the device
@@Frost_actual yeah kudos to him really for being able to accomplish what he did but it just goes to show no matter how skilled or masterful we may be only one simple thing can bring us down...there are masters in many facets of life...various artforms such as archery...boxing (I believe mike tysons coach cus d amato was a boxing master)...martial arts...meditation and so forth...they have reached very high skill in their area of expertise but it doesn't mean they are an all round master...there may be some stuff they don't know which can be their downfall...for sure there are master thieves out there who never got caught and set a limit for how many millions they wanna stop at and they just stopped and travelled somewhere in south east asia to live the good life...I know there are plenty of ex bikers from various nations such as germany and holland and sweden and australia..canada...new zealand and england who escaped from their clubs after making a million or so in thailand and cambodia and vietnam...probably in malaysia and indonesia and philipines too sitting by pools or on beaches with their cute asian girlfriends but generally staying low key and not drinking at bars or getting involved in selling drugs where they are

I respect the hell out of passing navy seal training and for his service. But his expertise and training wasn’t in robbing banks or law enforcement tactics. It was military and combat tactics.
For many years as a law enforcement officer, I worked and trained with a few former Navy Seals, and quite a few Army Rangers and hardcore Marines etc. I made calls with them in the field, participating in SWAT training, rappelling, EMT training and such. They were fit, but not large men. Usually they were sharp and mentally tough. But with that being said, they made mistakes just like the rest of us. They are just people. And when your on top of your game during your career, your train to stay sharp. But if you don’t stay in that environment, you lose the edge. I have no idea what or why he decided this was the best option for him. Not sure he could tell you, really. Maybe he developed PTSD, mental illness or an addiction.
I can also tell you of an officer that was a former contractor in Afghanistan, very well trained operator. He participated in many firefights allegedly during his tours. He lasted only a short time in law enforcement and resigned after being reprimanded for excessive force. He said it wasn’t for him and went back to the field to make more money and where he was comfortable. He said it was so much easier and less stressful to him. The job was simple, go out and kill the enemy before they kill you. Not the same rules of engagement in law enforcement.
But I will say this much. The very best SWAT or tactical team member I had ever worked with or trained with had no military experience. He came from a hard working family farm. He was a survivalist. The dude was a machine, built like body builder with zero fat and could run like a gazelle. One night on our shift he chased a car thief on foot, was shot point blank in the abdomen turning a corner and still chased the bad guy down and killed him. He never acknowledged the pain and was cool as a cucumber. However, he wasn’t a great street cop over all in my opinion. He was just a phenomenal warrior, mentally and physically. So we all have our limitations and what we do exceptionally well.
God don't give you everything, but he will give you something. Unfortunately no one is perfect.

@@jimygerilius2377 I tried and apparently failed to make a good point. Just because someone is a highly trained seal, Ranger, cop doesn’t mean they know everything or can overcome all. They are people, human beings that makes mistakes. You are at your best when your training often and working the field. Once you stop, you slowly lose the edge mentally and physically. It’s human nature.

I worked in a career field where I had to see people's credit. I noticed that people in contract work for big money spent it as fast as it came (this is in general. Not everyone). Often times taking out credit expecting the next big contract to cover them. Only to get left hanging with huge debt when their contracts dried up.
Not sure if he fit into that category, but it seems like he was desperate. I'm sure he knew the risk was not worth the reward.
I did some military style contract work after I retired from the military, I used it to pay everything off, mortgage, car loan etc. wanted to be debt free, a lot of the younger guys I worked with went ape shit wild buying expensive toys. Later I worked in the Oil field in Africa, got paid crazy money but knew this won't last, watched a lot of guys lose everything when the bottom fell out in 2016.
This is just a dude that was addicted to the adrenaline. This wasn't about money

Hadn't considered thus but at his age and experience I find it unlikely but its just as plausible as the boring civilian life. I've had vets around me my entire life between family and work colleagues. The latter seems the more likely just from what I've come to understand over the years.
I think it had WAYYYY more to do with the Rush/Thrill than it did the money... but I'm sure both were a driving factor!

Honestly this guy couldve started a business to test the security measures at banks and get paid to "rob" banks legally (of course he would return whatever money was taken and the bank owners would set it up with him without telling the bank employees, and law enforcement would be notified ahead of time) as a way to audit security guards, tellers, managers, and to help police put together plans to make response times faster. Sure, it would have to take more time to make money doing that, but he could have things set up every day, across the state or even the nation, and it could have such a good outcome for everybody.
I feel like there would be legal issues related to mental trauma from the bank tellers.
@@Hyperion656 yea, for sure anyone working there or any customers would definitely have a legal claim against the bank that set up a fake robbery. He could of possibly worked as a consultant behind the scenes though in teaching banks on how to tighten up their security.
It's called Penetration Testing, and you don't commit armed robberies. He undoubtedly had the skills to break into buildings and businesses for that line of work and made some really stupid choices.

I remember reading about red cell… if I’m not mistaken they started to “plant bombs” and such without permission to prove how lax some places security was, to the horror of whatever company/ elected officials property or business they were doing it at. Man had a history of taking it to the extreme

I felt the same way after I got out so I joined the reserve. I didn’t realize bank robbery was on the table.

I had a coworker who joined the army for only a year. Dude acted like he was some badass but he never toured just a mechanic at a military base a few states next door lol.
