The problem with race allegories done like this is that race isn’t really a thing. No Chinese person is going to walk into a shop and accidently blow it up because they inherently have the power of Fire. And no Caucasian person is gonna accidently dirty up every rug the walk on because they're made of rocks and dirt. These are physical characteristics that these people in this world have.

I genuinely wonder if any of Pixar’s classics were made today, people would give them the exact same response as Elemental, people would probably say that Toy Story’s plot was “the story is too simple, doesn’t have much to say” if the film were to have been made today, hell remember when Finding Nemo kept getting reviews back in 2003 saying it “wasn’t as good as Pixar’s other films, it’s too episodic, it’s Pixar’s weakest film” and nowadays it’s hailed as a classic? Even Pete Doctor mentioned recently that “people are criticizing us by our own stuff, like “it’s not as good as my favorite Pixar film””. People need to stop being so harsh on Pixar, because it seems like every other film that they’ve made keeps getting reviews saying each is weaker than the last and then a decade later is hailed as a masterpiece.

This movie was way better than I thought it would be. At the same time, I completely understand why there's so little interest in it and that it bombed. This movie had to follow up on Across the Spiderverse, which was as much of a milestone in Western animation as Into the Spiderverse was, and people were already convinced that it was gonna be extremely generic and not worth going to the cinema for. It was set up for failure before it really had any chance to prove itself otherwise. It's sad but I hope it's a catalyst for Pixar to finally reinvent itself and try something new and bold. There's a shift in how the public views animation now and they should broaden their horizons.
Hell, this is never going to happen but imagine if Pixar become trailblazers again in animation by giving us a fully mature, adult-oriented movie that makes no attempts to appeal to kids. Maybe take that utopian city trope they love and turn it on its head and give us a cyberpunk city setting.

    • @PeregrineFalcon646
      @PeregrineFalcon646 Před rokem +3

I hope that too! I’m not rooting for Pixar to lose-there’s no denying the positive impact they’ve had on the animation scene. But they’ve gotta wake up and try something new, or be forced to fade into obscurity. But if Dreamworks and Sony take the stage as the best animation studios, I’m fine with that. Pixar deserves it’s time out of the limelight until it can be innovative and original again.

I was really worried about the allegory for interracial relationships in this movie because it seemed like it'd fall into a pretty common pitfall a lot of allegories like this falls into, justifying discrimination/separation of races. It unfortunately played into this idea pretty heavily with Ember being a walking hazard to many people around her but also being constantly threatened by water. To make the relationship work both Wade and Ember have to live a fundamentally different and way more difficult life than if they were in a relationship with someone of the same element. The idea that the initial happiness of an interracial couple will lead to life long misery is an idea heavily pushed by racist individuals. Similarly, the 2 are happy together but any misstep could seriously hurt or kill Ember. The way their relationship is depicted is that they're this exception to a rule rightfully designed to protect people rather than showing how the rule itself is nonsense.

Honestly, its pretty refreshing after all the dumsterfire movies we got
      - Lightyear: Its trash, because the timeline of the movie does not make sense. Buzz's character is rewritten to be more unlikable, arrogant, and bossy. I dont think Andy would buy Buzz when his character is like that
      - Little Mermaid Remake: Its trash, not because of raceswapping. Its because it made Eric pathetic and jabbed his character at every moment. It made Ariel a Mary Sue by making her swim to the surface without the assistance of Flounder and Sebastian and making her kill Ursula instead of Eric, despite having no experience to pilot a ship. Its also just 1:1 with the animation
      - Pinocchio Remake: Besides being a lazy and cheap 1:1 remake of the animation, it sanitizes Pleasure Island by changing beer to root beer, changing the scenery in a way that defeats the point the animation tried to convey (In the original, Pleasure island was crime haven, while in the newer one, its just a Disneyland esque city)
      - Toy Story 4: Its trash in the same sense Velma was, the characters are rewritten. For example, Buzz was dumb and kept pushing his buttons despite knowing what they do which goes against his character of being intelligent, Woody abandons his kid which goes against his character of being loyal to his kid no matter what. Even the message of "Bonnie doesn't care anymore" is invalid, because the movie tries to claim that she has stopped playing with Woody in the movie, but in reality, she still played with him during the road trip. Agreed, racism is hate, nothing more, there is no logical reason----fundamentally there are potential related reasons for why one logically might not like another (ie previously proven/established safety issues) in the movie that unfortunately conflate with one another, and it weakens the whole allegory.
Simply put, I think the movie would have been better off finding a more fitting allegory for fire and water----racism is definitely not one of them, especially when Ember (as mentioned in vid) seemed to be unrealistically/unequally/unfairly shielded by the writers during the leak/dam sequence (contradicts the whole allegory premise, feels contrived, fake)----which is too bad as that easily could have been a great character moment-----instead we got a sub-standard contrivance that weakens the supposed racism allegory even further than it already was, while drawing more attention to the shaky state of it------I guess this shows how important it is for writers to comprehensively plan and understand the premise/concept scientifically, inside, outside, and throughout----that's sort of the beauty of writing, you learn so much, that you can bring new meaning to even the most simple things in life----that some may even take for granted---in that sense they got halfway, they found something simple to give complex meaning to (fire and water), unfortunately they just didn't find the best meaning for it.
Instead they chose one they thought was right probably without enough forethought-----so it ended up only being 'right' until it clearly wasn't.
As for the Romance plot, yeah the video sums it up, too one sided (development-wise).

I honestly, to my surprise, actually enjoyed watching this movie. While not perfect, it's still very fun to watch; and some scenes were emotional enough to touch me. The animation is unique, the story is good, and the characters are fun. And the chemistry between Wade and Ember is pretty believable, because it does take its time to develop it - even if you can tell almost right away. And I suppose their personalities almost match their elements: Ember has trouble with her fiery temper, while Wade tends to be a sympathy cryier. To me, Wade and Emver have one of the most realistic relationships in a Disney movie, because while you can tell there is something between them, they still start off as good friends, and confirm their love near the end of the movie; this becoming a real couple. They say opposites attract, and that's very true in their case - but they also have things in common. The moment when Ember met Wade's family was fun to watch because it showed how far society has come to accepting others; and yes, the game where Wade made Ember cry for the first time was very touching because it what sparked their true feeling for each other.
It would have been nice to hear more about Wade's father; like what can of man he was, what he did for a living, and what caused their relationship to drift away. It also would have been nice to see more of Clod, he definitely should of had a bigger role. I also wish they explained more of the crack in the dam - did it just get old, or was it caused by something? The part where Ember and Wade have an argument over their differences, that I also wish could of had a bit more attention. I mean, Ember got her say on how she feels, but Wade never really explained his point of view. Maybe he could have told Ember that just because he comes from luxury, he never truly did what he wanted because of everything his father expected of him growing up - and his dying wish was for Wade to find his own path. Also, Wade could have told Ember that the reason his family has money is because of how much work they put into making a life for their families.
Overall, I did enjoy the movie. And I actually thought that Wade died in the end - but it's Disney; they don't do that. And I'm actually glad they didn't. It would have been nice to see more of Ember and Wade's childhood. Maybe have them cross each other's paths multiple times, but never actually interacted. If there's ever a sequel...I'd watch it. Maybe it could be about Wade and Ember getting married and starting a family.

To add to this, the writing in Elemental is a lot deeper and nuanced than what people and critics gave it credit for.
Yes, there is the Romeo and Juliet trope, but this entire movie was about belonging and the difficulties of being an immigrant and trying to “break away” from their natural elements.
Her family left their home country for a better life and it’s obvious that she was pressured to live up to their expectations.
A love story was painted in the trailers and narrative but I don’t think it was the vocal point imo. This was more of a father/daughter story rather than the trope of trying to be with your lover at all costs.

Ember was his spark... his shot of confidence to put the "odd jobs" he did to actual work... that's why he's only confident around people who can offer stability... a conscience, of sorts. It makes perfect sense why Ember would be super reluctant too, even without the added "fire" family pressure, because she's messed up everything she's ever attempted, when it comes to reading people, and definitely has trust issues... add that to the whole fire/water dynamic, and it's beautiful.
But yeah, completely agree about Ember and her father... I nearly cried I was so happy.
Also completely agree this film doesn't deserve the hate... I've seen it twice now... and it's just such a wholesome story. Yes it's nothing new... no it's not going to blow your mind or rip your heartstrings out... but it's a good film, and it's great to see Pixar back in theaters.

These race allegories typically never work because often in these movies, zootopia, elemental, etc. The creators always make there be a valid reason for them to NOT be together, which doesn’t apply to real life. Foxes ARE predators to bunnies. There’s no real life equivalency to this which is why people don’t like these race allegories in animated movies that don’t use humans.

    • @Trecherousbeast
      @Trecherousbeast Před rokem +14

I don't know about Elemental since I haven't seen it yet, but upon recently rewatching I think Zootopia's race allegory checks out.
First the question isn't whether or not an animal is predator or prey, it's whether or not they're inherently dangerous.
While "predator type" animals do have THE CAPABILITY to badly harm a "prey type" animal, there's no logical reason to ASSUME that the predator animal is MORE dangerous than ANY prey animal by simply BEING there.
The scene that portrayed this the most obviously, was during that section when animals started fearing predators because Judy said they were inherently dangerous due to their "biology". A tiger is minding his business looking at his phone while a rabbit fearfully clutches their child. While you can say that a tiger can do a lot of damage to a rabbit, there's no reason to ASSUME that they will, which is the entire race allegory.
Even around the time that Zootopia came out, biologists were thinking about getting rid of words like "predator" and "prey, because it wasn't accurate enough to an animals behavior, food, or any kind of important information from an animal. I can't remember the name of the animal, but the rodent mafia leader is a great example of this. Despite his small size, he's still the most dangerous "predator" in his ecosystem.
Long story short, the lesson was that you shouldn't judge how "dangerous" or "safe" an animal could be based on their race because it's entirely inconsequential to their behavior. You should look at what PERSON they are and I think it did it well.

Elemental is really soothing, sure it not going to do well in the box office since people are mostly into spider-man, and the flash on the same weekend night. But I actually love the romance with Wade and Ember. Sure Wade can’t keep up a job but he very good at reading people more because he’s a sensitive guy. He can picks up Ember’s feelings which something Ember wants when she can’t express since she scared of hurting her father. Even in promotional materials actors and people FROM PIXAR compared it to Zootopia. And Zootopia still does the race allegory better because people aren’t getting physically hurt by being around someone different. Plus, it was more interpretative and didn’t line up completely 1:1 with real life. Plus, it can be enjoyed just as a buddy cop mystery movie. (Which is how most kids saw it)

    • @nikkichhun

  • @alexandersolodovnikov4840

I liked the romance and the generational part of the movie a lot, but the racial allegory was absolutely tone def. Generally, in this kind of movie you whant to promote the idea that "we're not that different" but here the world building and the plot just enhances the idea of segregation. We see multiple times throughout the film how fire elemental can pose a real danger to all the other dwellers of the city. And in the end Ember and Waid just solve the whole thing with the power of love which "changed their chemistry". Zootopia did the same story way better.
Also the whole repairing Dam story arc felt like an afterthought.

i love this movie, not one of their best movies but it’s definitely not the worse. this movie is better than most of the recent movies that have premiered and does not deserve the hate its receiving whatsoever. it contains somewhat stuff that disney/pixars movies have been lacking these few years.
this film was also able to connect with audience that had been going through similar problems or are going through them. as a point of view i seen this story as immigrant parents moving from one place to another (a different state, country, etc.) and hoping the best for their children with that, having way too high hopes for their children to achieve. Amber is shown as a the “child” of the immigrant parents who is afraid to disappoint due to her parents having to sacrifice everything they’ve ever known from where they came from like family and the way their home used to work to give their child a better future than from what Amber could of had received if they would of had stayed. therefore she decides to go with her parents “dream” of running management of the shop being a “tradition” and decides to sacrifice her own love life and childhood out of guilt. (once again, my point of view)
however, i think this movie could of been better with plotting. I love the design and the “we can’t be together but we’ll get through with this” relationship, i also love that they used a lauv song.

3:03 I think that Wade’s maturity makes a lot of sense. He’s just really in tune with his emotions so he’s able to figure it out more. I think the more you feel, the more you think about why you feel - he has a lot of emotional maturity.
I think it was refreshing to see an overly-emotional guy who isn’t a total wreck. He’s not ashamed to be emotional and it seems to work out well for him. He doesn’t bottle his emotions or put up a wall. I think it’s why Ember and Wade work.
I don’t think it would’ve fit if he was vague, unsure, or inexperienced, he is a full grown adult. I understand the whole two characters working themselves out together might be more appealing but, Ember was our main protagonist. With the way the POV is set up, I think it makes sense that we only see Ember’s progression through Wade’s influence.

I put Elemental in my Pixar top 10. Loved it! Granted it does have its flaws. I do agree with you that the racism focus was a little weak, which is why it isn't number #1, that will always belong to WALL-E 😉. I think though it was clearly established that fire faces xenophobia because they are the newest element (Ember is only second generation) and because they are the most destructive. I can't figure out how air and water can die, they seem invincible! 😂. Anyway, i'm not saying more scenes of it shouldn't have been included, I would have like to have seen that, but i'm satisfied with what we got.
I will argue, respectively, that Wade did grow as a character during this movie. In a real life relationship, the couple is supposed to learn and grow from one another. Ember obviously did, since she is the focus, but Wade did too. He learned to live his life to its potential, take risks rather than just go from one job to the next like he said. This is why he pushs Ember and also fights for their relationship. Wade also, because of his social class difference, didn't understand Ember's struggles. He learns however the importance of culture from Ember, ending up risking his life for something that he has no knowledge of, but he knows is important. So I wouldn't say he was all mature, he had room to grow and did so.
