  • in this short clip i take you with me on a repair i had in the shop. the customers complaint was the right side door lock actuators were inoperative and the vacuum pump would continue to run for a long period of time. sorry for the shaky parts in the video. i wasn't planing on doing a video on this repair so it was last minute

    Thank you so much for this video!! I have replaced the pump 3x, and now this. Not having endless money to pay for things like this to be fixed, this is awesome to see it's something I can do and not mess up. I'll still be leaving the engine and brake repairs to the pros though.

    Thanks Will I had the same problem on my 99 Jetta. The way i found my problem was I could a hissing noise coming from the door as the pump was running. Its was faint but, distinguishable. Saved some time pulling off all the door kicks and panels.

    That's totally cool, Will. I like to learn something new every day, and you gave me my morning fix, ha ha. My son has a VW and I often wondered if the door locks are vacuum actuated. If you ever have to replace a length of tubing, you could thread a wire down the old tube, pull out the old tube, and thread the new tube over the wire -- it might be easier than blind threading the new tube. But I guess the more common point of failure would be at a connector. Thanks for posting!

    Ace! Found my issue to be a little white box operating the fuel filler cap to be leaking. Someone fixed it with tape at some point but tape came off. I found it by blowing through the main tube and hearing air coming out so just followed the sound to the leak 👍🏼

    Thanks for the video. I have a 1999 Mk3 Golf estate where I had a similar problem. However, located the source of the leak by blowing tobacco smoke into the vacuum tube where the pump is located and waited to see where the smoke emerged in the car. My fault was the pneumatic actuator for the fuel flap. The silicone seal fad failed so I have ordered a new one on ebay for £20. Just a thought to use smoke to speed up finding the leak. Thanks again =)

    This is great. I have a 98 Golf and the lock motor seems to run until it times out just like you showed us. Also sometime without know when the motor is running i can't tell if the locks are locking or unlocking depending on which way I turned the key and come back to my car and half the doors are unlocked. Thanks again can't wait to start fixing mine. Cheers

    @PaulEWu thanks for bringing that up. i thought i heard a leak in the trunk but then again that pump was pretty noisy, i tried to listen near the doors i could hear a faint noise but wasn't sure if it was the actuator trying... then i second guessed myself and traced the line to be certain. your right though. in hindsight i should of went with my gut and pulled the panel from the start...

    I believe this is the same pump system used in a lot of vw made cars. One alternate way to find the problem would be to use a smoke machine, i find it saves some time removing panels.

  • @jschirr
    @jschirr Před 12 lety

    nice job working through that maze. one thing i probably would have done first (you might have done this) would be to hook a hand held vacuum pump to the line at the pump to see if the lines would hold vacuum (and if the locks would have gone down). In your case, i presume you would have seen that you couldnt pull a good vacuum. Im thinking that would have eliminated the pump being too weak as the cause.

    I have a question:
    On my car, sometimes the vacuum pump keeps running for quite some time (20+ seconds), though all the doors do lock
    I don't want to mess things up since there doesn't seem to be a real problem yet.
    My problem is however, that I am afraid one day the vacuum pump wont stop running, and it will drain my battery overnight.
    Is there a timeout built in somehow or is my concern justified?
    Kind regards!

  • @JohnzCarz
    @JohnzCarz Před 12 lety

    I guess the other way to find it would have been to use a smoke machine and look for the leak. That window crank handle is an example of why some parts for these cars cost so much - instead of a $0.02 clip to hold the handle they engineered a release right into it. It's a great idea but how often do you remove the handle? Or.....maybe they knew you would be in there a lot!

    Hi Will, today I was removing my rear lights and I noticed a connector which was hanging there but it had nothing to do with the lights. Then I figured it had to be something to do with this pump which was out of the foam casing , lying on its side. I moved the pump , not knowing what this thing was and then I hear beep beep followed by the alarm which I cant turn off. Maybe the previous owner had some issues with this which Im not aware of. Anyhow The key in the door is not having any effect on the alarm so I cant operate the car. I have disconnected the battery from positive and negative terminals with the hope that all will be well in 24 hours or so. Do you have any thoughts on the best approach without making things worse or just advice on what might be going on.
